The Year of Billy Miller, by Kevin Henkes

A 2014 Newbery Honor Book
A New York Times Bestseller

Award-winning, nationally bestselling author Kevin Henkes introduces second-grader Billy Miller in this fast-paced and funny story about friendship, sibling rivalry, and elementary school. The Year of Billy Miller includes black-and-white art by Kevin Henkes and is perfect for fans of the Ramona books; Frindle, by Andrew Clements; and the Clementine series.

The New York Times declared: "Henkes's delightful story is restrained and vivid . . . forgoing the overdramatic or zany, it shows the substance, warmth and adaptability of beautifully common family love." When Billy Miller has a mishap at the statue of the Jolly Green Giant at the end of summer vacation, he ends up with a big lump on his head. What a way to start second grade, with a lump on your head! As the year goes by, though, Billy figures out how to navigate elementary school, how to appreciate his little sister, and how to be a more grown up and responsible member of the family and a help to his busy working mom and stay-at-home dad. Newbery Honor author and Caldecott Medalist Kevin Henkes delivers a short, satisfying, laugh-out-loud-funny school and family story that features a diorama homework assignment, a school poetry slam, cancelled sleepovers, and epic sibling temper tantrums. This is a perfect short novel for the early elementary grades.

From School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-The beginning of a new school year brings anxious moments for Billy Miller, a typical second grader at Georgia O'Keeffe Elementary School in a small Wisconsin town. His new teacher, Ms. Silver, uses chopsticks to hold her hair in place and know-it-all Emma Sparks is unfortunately one of his desk mates. Just as a school year is divided into quarters, the book is divided into four parts-"Teacher," "Father," "Sister," and "Mother"-each offering a new perspective on Billy's personality and development through his interactions with these well-developed characters. He begins the school year with a lump on his head from a family-vacation incident and navigates glitter homework fiascos, canceled sleepover plans, and sibling annoyances as readers see the year unfold through funny and often poignant situations. Billy himself might have been daunted by a book with more than 200 pages, but eager young readers will find this a great first chapter book to share or read solo.-Cheryl Ashton, Amherst Public Library, OHα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
Billy Miller is starting second grade, and though his teacher, Mrs. Silver, tells the class it is the Year of the Rabbit, Billy’s father tells him it will be the Year of Billy Miller. Billy isn’t sure. He’s even more worried when he gets off on the wrong foot his first day, but as the months go on, Billy begins to shine. There are some wonderful moments here: when Billy brings his teacher silver items—coins, a paper clip, a little rabbit—to show her he’s a nice boy; when he agonizes over how to tell his father that Papa is a babyish name; and a triumphant ending when poetry and self-confidence intertwine. But the school year also seems rushed, and some intriguing characters, like the annoying Emma, are barely touched. Harkening back to writers of an earlier era, like Eleanor Estes, Henkes never compromises his language. Words like replicated, diligently, and frustrated appear—and that’s on just one page. Since this is so age specific, older readers might pass it by. That would be too bad, because this is a story with a lot of heart and sweet insights into growing up. Illustrations unseen. High-Demand Backstory: There’s no more versatile producer of children’s books working today than Henkes. Libraries, with great justification, are always interested in what he’s up to now. Grades 3-7. --Ilene Cooper

Guaranteed to shred your heart
By E. R. Bird
I don't readily compare books to Ramona (now THERE'S a sentence opener, ladies and gentlemen). To compare any children's book to Beverly Cleary's classic series just leaves one wide open to ridicule. The Ramona books are classics for a very particular reason; they place a sturdy, hard-as-nails finger directly on an age that is traditionally forgotten. Kids between the ages of six and ten are nebulous creatures. Too old to be cute little itty bitties and too young to enjoy the rights and privileges of their older kin, the 6-10 year old crowd straddles our traditional age ranges. Walk into any library or bookstore and you'll see titles for kids separated in a very particular fashion: picture books, easy readers (for when they're first learning to read), early chapter books (self-explanatory), and middle grade fiction. What's missing is what the Ramona books are. They're older than early chapter fiction but younger than middle grade. There is no term for this kind of book, and indeed it's one of the most difficult types of books to locate on a shelf. Now, at long last, The Year of Billy Miller comes to occupy that same space, but its similarities to Ramona don't stop there. Filled with heart, smarts, humor, and a boy-centric p.o.v. that is almost impossible to pin down, Henkes has finally done for the chapter book set what he's been doing for the picture book readers for years. He's created a character for the ages.

Billy Miller wasn't always worried that he wouldn't be smart enough for second grade. To be blunt, the idea never even entered his brain. Then he fell. It wasn't life-threatening or anything but that fall from a guardrail to the ground certainly gave him a bump on the noggin. When he heard his mom confess to his dad that she worried there might be some kind of permanent damage, that's when his own worries started. Fortunately his Papa sets him right telling his son, "... I know - and I know everything - that this is the Year of Billy Miller." Turns out, Papa's right. Between making up with his teacher, helping his Papa with his art, attempting to stay up all night with his little sister Sal, writing a poem about his mom and so much more, second grade is turning out to be a full year. And Billy Miller's going to be smart enough for all of it.

Boy books. Oh, they're all the rage these days, didn't you know? Seems you can't walk two steps out your door without being barraged by calls to come save the boys. They don't read enough... no wait, they read but they need their own books. No, think again, they need more nonfiction. Or is it sports stories? Or humor? However you choose to define them, boy readers are highly sought after. Getting their personalities down on paper, however, is remarkably difficult work. The lazy writers will just throw some gross details on a page and then call their work done. Sometimes there will be a reference to sports and the like, but so many miss the point. When you're writing the p.o.v. of a boy you need to know exactly what it is that makes that boy tick. Now take Billy Miller here. Early in the book his parents are talking about his recent bump on the head and his mom says, "But I worry that down the line something will show up. He'll start forgetting things." His father's dead-on reply is, "He already forgets things... He's a seven-year-old boy."

Evidence of Billy's boyness is everywhere. For example, when he's supposed to be writing a poem about his mother this is how the text explains his plight: "Billy had trouble getting started. He opened his poetry journal to the first page and wrote: My Mom. He couldn't think of anything else to write, so he drew a series of volcanoes in progressive stages of exploding." It would be difficult for me to explain to you how much I love that detail, but if pressed I would try. Then there's his nemesis Emster. Henkes never highlights this fact, but it's probably important to note that long before she's making Billy's life a misery, Billy cast the first shot across her bow. Which is to say, when she introduced herself in class as "Emster" he was the one who mistakenly (but buffonishly) misheard her as "Hamster". That's the kind of move guaranteed to make an instant enemy, and though Billy never remembers this moment again (and, if he did, it's difficult to say if he'd know why it was so important) it's clearly the catalyst for things that come.

Now consider the risk Henkes took with this book. His hero is seven. Yet Billy stars in a book that's 240 pages in length. There are some interstitial pictures, but nothing like what you'd find in the early chapter book section of your library. Even if you look up this title on something like Amazon.com you'll see that the suggested age for this book is "8 and up". Now does that make any sense at all to you? How many kids do you know that get a kick out of reading books about children younger than themselves? What we have here is a readaloud book. The kind of book meant for bedtimes and for those teachers who tackle a chapter a day in class. Henkes could have bowed out and upped his hero's age to nine or ten or even eleven. He didn't. He made Billy a 2nd grader because that's what Billy is. His mind is that of a second grader. His actions are those of a second grader. To falsely age him would be to make a huge mistake. Granted, Henkes risks alienating potential readers, but remember Ramona again. Aren't there older kids who like to read about her adventures? And hasn't she managed to last all these years in spite of these very concerns? You betcha. It's all about the writing, baby.

To point out that the writing in this book is superb is akin to pointing out that air helps one to breathe. It's obvious. This is Kevin Henkes, after all. Still, I've never quite connected to his novels in the same way that I've connected to his picture books. It's probably just me (the shiny Newbery Honor sticker on Olive s Ocean is a clue) but his magnificent ability to hone a point down to its most essential details is very well suited to a 32-page format. I hadn't felt a similar ability until I read Billy Miller. First off, the lines themselves are just keen. Here are two of my favorites:

"Billy had known Grace since kindergarten. She was so shy she seemed almost invisible. Like vacuums, her wide eyes were sucking in everything."

"Billy sat alone, considering the choice he had to make. He sucked the web of skin between his thumb and pointer finger, his hand falling across his chin like a beard."

Beautiful. Then there are the characters themselves, it's nice when the wise all-knowing parents (in this case, primarily the dad) is flawed. This is nice. He gets testy when his work isn't going well, which makes for a nice character detail. The mom sort of sinks into the woodwork (though she does have a nice moment with Billy when he has to write about what she likes) and it's hard to remember much about her, but the dad uses terms like "Isn't she cute? Just looking at her shreds my heart." Sal, Billy's little sister, is an appropriate mix of cute and annoying. Billy is a typical older brother but you have to love it when he freaks himself out by thinking of scary things in bed and runs to her room for companionship and comfort. It shreds my heart, it does.

In the end, The Year of Billy Miller is a stand-alone title that really does leave you wanting more. You've gotten so close to Billy and his family that they stick in your brain long after you've closed the covers. You can't help but hope that there are more Billy Millers on the horizon. To create just one would be a cruel tease. At the very least this book is a boon to any librarian who has faced a parent at a reference desk saying, "My kid loves Ramona. What else do you have like that?" Ladies and gentlemen, we have our answer. Absolutely remarkable.

For ages 5-10.

A great book for younger readers who are ready for a more mature tale
By Jennifer Donovan
This is the story of, wait for it, Billy Miller. The book takes us from the start of 2nd grade to the end. This is a short book with fairly large print, but it's not just a "ready for chapter books" sort of book.

It features Billy's fears and worries and accomplishments. School stories are very popular, but tend to either feature bratty girls or older kids facing different concerns than a younger elementary school kid. I love that Billy's problems are totally age appropriate, and examine the feelings -- not just the events of trouble or misunderstandings.

If you don't think your kid would go for a more heartfelt story (there's humor, too!), do it as a read-aloud. Even better, because it might open the door to discuss his fears and worries.

Inside A Real Seven Year Old's Head
By Pop Bop
There are lots of great books out there for middle graders and older elementary schoolers. There are lots of fun and interesting pre-school and very early reader books. Whole franchises have been built around simple chapter books. And, there are certainly some fine books for adventurous second grade readers. But, most of those second grader books are introductory level fantasy/adventures or semi-frantic sort-of-zany school daze tales. Then we have "The Year of Billy Miller". It would be easy to rhapsodize about this book and I certainly wouldn't fault anyone for doing so. It is calm, gentle, sweet and knowing, but for all that it takes considerable risks.

Billy is entering second grade and has doubts about his ability to handle it. On top of that, as the story progresses, he has concerns about a variety of other problems that can plague 7 year olds - like whether his new teacher likes him, how to address his parents in a more "grown up" manner, how to deal with anger at his younger sister, nightmares, and the list goes on. Now, this isn't a "problem" novel or a disguised parenting manual. It is an engaging sort-of-stream-of-consciousness novel in which an appealing decent kid expresses his hopes and fears and joys in an honest and authentic fashion. The author's genius is in expressing all of those thoughts in a convincing and not at all precious manner, in avoiding or at least completely refashioning all school story clichés, and then in arranging the action and developing the plot in such a way that Billy's various issues are addressed and resolved in a satisfying and usually touching way.

Treatment of all of the characters is generous. Billy's Momma and Papa are well rounded; sister Sal is alternately annoying and lovable; the teacher Ms. Silver is ideal; friends and classmates are just sketched in, but with nice, telling details. Each episode is developed just enough to allow for some resolution and then we move on to the next event, so young readers can enjoy and identify with the action and then move on. The result is that the read is touching and insightful and yet also brisk and manageable. It's not cartoonish and it's not Henry James, but is, rather, honest well-written second grade literature. What a nice find.

A Fairy Tale story
By D. Guyette
Xavier LeDuc is a dedicated soldier sworn to protect the royal family of Pasadonia. On tour with the royal jewels, Xavier meets a lovely red haired woman who features resemble that of his King. Could Amanda Carn be his long lost daughter? Xavier hopes not as she is desirable to him on so many levels. Charged with the duty of protecting her until her paternity can be determined, Xavier decides the best way to guard her is up close and personal. He knows though that the personal will end if she is indeed the king`s daughter.

The Making of a Princess was a delightful book to read. A bit of suspense and love that looks like it may only be from afar. Xavier knew he wrong to get involved with Amanda but he was powerless to stop. When Amanda learned he was to guard her, she was not sure what to think but the thoughts left her very unhappy. Her grandparents were not very accepting and she had a lot to overcome. Xavier would help her but only if allowed. Cinderella never had so good. The Making of a Princess is great for a fast and enjoyable read, excellent for the beach.

Note: This is a revised and updated edition.

The Paleo diet has been the latest health movement, taking the low carb diet a step further by eliminating grains and legumes and eating only lean, grass-fed meat. In short they consume only what was available to ancient humans or cavemen. The theory says that by eating what human bodies were designed to eat, people will be healthier, have fewer illnesses and lose weight. In many cases, Paleo diet consumers are also fueling their P90X or Cross Fit exercise routines, the two most popular fitness regimes in the country. The health benefits have been supported by major studies. This is a popular trend much like the low carb diet. It is combined with the great bookselling topic of slow cooking. While the cavemen didn’t have slow cookers, they certainly used slow cooking techniques over fires which make the meals in this book one step closer to the origins and theory behind the diet. The delicious dishes are as homey as they are healthy—and ready when you are.

I had high hopes for this cookbook as I'd been waiting for it to be released and suffered through the many delays. I assumed that those extra 5 months would yield and flawless cookbook full of gorgeous food photography and delicious food. Unfortunately, only the delicious food was found.

Over the last couple of weeks, we have prepared several recipes from the cookbook. We have yet to be disappointed by the finished product, but the recipe directions and lack of photographs leave much to be desired. Here are examples of the lack of clarity in the directions:

-No note on when to add ingredients - Pear Ginger Pork Chops - no note to add cinnamon and allspice
-Vague instructions - Paleo Chicken Adobo - "Put the chicken and all the other ingredients into a bowl", but really means all except the ghee. It made for an interesting marinade when my husband prepared it with the ghee included
-No information on how to prepare a given ingredient - Paleo Beef Casserole - garlic sliced, crushed, smashed, minced? Chicken with Butternut Squash and Figs - leave chicken breasts whole? Cube? If whole, shred at the end?

We have found flaws in all but one recipe we have prepared thus far. I would definitely not recommend this for a novice or beginner cook because of the room for interpretation left by the lack of explicit instruction. One would think that the delays in publishing would have afforded ample time for recipe editing and testing.

Here's the rub. I can't quit this cookbook because the food is delicious. I find myself reaching for it as I make my weekly meal plan and including at least 2-3 meals from it. As someone following an Autoimmune Protocol, I was pleasantly surprised to find at least a few recipes in each section that do not include nightshades. We have thoroughly enjoyed each dish we have prepared, and my husband has requested the Beef Roast with Beets and Tarragon enter the regular rotation. I do think most of the chicken recipes would benefit from a 4-5 hour cooking time, rather than 6 hours, but that's an easy adjustment to make personally.

Overall, if you can get past the editing and lack of food photography, the food is good. I almost wish I had held out for a reprint with edits in place, though.

Fire your editor
By Steven
I just purchased this book hoping to make my life easier, sigh, too much cut and paste has screwed up the recipes. The first recipe had partial instructions from some other recipe, and my second attempt has differing amounts in instructions than in the ingredients list in addition to some of the worst writing I've ever seen to the extent of gibberish. I have a feeling the editors and publisher are to blame and have put a black eye on this book for me. I won't order any books from this publisher again rest assured.

There are much better cookbooks out there
By Jamie Smith
I can't understand all these glowing reviews. The book is very pretty with pictures of all the recipes, and it contains a good overview of eating paleo and nutrition tidbits spread throughout the book. But that's about all I have to say that's positive.

Things I don't like....they definitely did NOT proofread. We have made 5 recipes so far. In every single one there are ingredients listed that aren't in the instructions anywhere, ingredients in the instructions not on the list, or what looks to be part of another recipe's ingredient list inserted mid-sentence in the instructions. I have just kind of guessed what I thought it was supposed to be.

This would be okay if the recipes where any good. But every one has been "okay." Edible, but nothing we'd bother to make again (or serve anyone else). We've been eating strict paleo for a few years now,and cooking for a very long time,so we've started trying to amp them up a bit (adding more spices, deglazing the pan when it calls for browning the meat - why wouldn't you do this if your already browning the meat? missing stuff like this makes me think the authors haven't been cooking very long)but it hasn't helped much.

Oh, and I REALLY dislike that there is no recipe list under the table of content headings (i.e. what beef recipes are under the beef section?). There is an alphabetical index in the back, but that isn't useful unless you know the exact name of a particular recipe you're looking for. I like to be able to quickly scan and see what I've tried/get ideas without flipping page by page.

We'll keep trying recipes from it, although I usually half them now to not waste expensive meat, etc. (we buy free-range) on something that likely will just be okay. But if you're new to paleo, don't get this book! There are better ones out there, and I think it might turn you off. But if you're not new and/or have been cooking a long time and don't mind tweaking the recipes some, then it's okay. But really, save your money.

"We need a dead body."

"Yeah, Jimmy, we do, except we need two bodies for this job." From the passenger seat of their van, Terence Mahew scanned the suburban development they'd staked out. A lick of sweat trickled down his forehead. Blasted Florida heat. The van was hotter than some of the hellholes he'd visited courtesy of the U.S. military before he'd been drummed out.

Terence swiped his brow with a bandanna, tied the rag around his shaved head and looked over at his eager-eyed cohort. "You wanna pick the vics this time? We need a woman and a kid."

His nephew nodded, face flushed with excitement.

Yeah, Jimmy was psycho. Just the way Terence liked his accomplices. Ready for anything. No conscience in sight.

Terence propped his combat boot on the dash, slid his favorite Bowie from the leather sheath on his thigh and tested the blade. The sharp steel nicked his index finger, and a drop of blood pooled on the pad. Bored with waiting, he considered the crimson bead for a few seconds, then smeared it across his skin. Interesting how the cut oozed and then stopped so quickly. He inhaled deep and sucked the salty fluid. Sick, he knew, but he loved that coppery tang.

Since being booted out of Special Ops, Terence had missed the kill. He'd put the word out to the right people, and he'd landed a sweet gig this time. A woman and a baby. Easy pickings.

The way he looked at it, he'd been lucky. Paid to kill since he turned eighteen. Of course, now the highest bidder wrote the checks instead of the government. His next paycheck had enough zeros to take care of his mama for quite a while.

Terence flicked his thumb against the blade, drawing another dollop of blood. He'd regretted the fear in his mama's eyes when he'd given her the new car his last visit. She never asked him a question or said a word. Just gave him that look, that same skittish, knowing look as when he was a kid telling her he planned to hone his "hunting" skills in the woods near home. Well, he was all grown up and still hunting. He expected she knew it. At least his prey was a lot more fun now.

Speaking of prey, Terence had a kidnapping to plan. He scanned the upscale neighborhood's surroundings beneath a hooded gaze. His nephew might be raring to go, but too much enthusiasm made a man stupid. Jimmy boy didn't need any help in that department.

His nephew needed to be cold and calculating, no emotions. That's what made Terence the best.

"Okay, Jimmy, tell me what you see. Anything useful?"

"There are some nice houses," Jimmy ventured nervously. "Lots of trees. Grass."

"Are you trying to piss me off?" Even with the air conditioner blowing full force in his face, perspiration soaked the back of Terence's T-shirt. Ninety percent humidity and ninety degrees pretty much sucked as much as the kid's powers of observation.

"Listen up, you idiot. We've been following Dr. Jamison around for the past few days. Each afternoon we've been planted right in this spot, watching her. What does she do?"

"Uh…snags her kid from the car seat and cuddles him?"

"That's the hearts and roses version. We're kidnapping her. You need to identify what she does that will let us grab her and the baby. She pulls her car in right beside those great big bushes, takes the kid out and puts him on her hip, Jimmy. That means she balances all her other crap on the other arm so she has no way to defend herself."

"Do we kill the kid?"

"No." Terence had wanted to eliminate the baby, too. Easier to set up the disappearance that way. "The guy who hired us almost blew an artery when I suggested it. Apparently, his group needs Dr. Jamison alive and unhurt. They want her baby for leverage."

"Too bad."

"Yeah." Truth was, as long as the check cleared, Terence didn't care what they'd planned for the doctor or her kid. None of his business. But he'd bet she wouldn't be living in a small, peaceful suburban neighborhood with tidy green lawns anymore. From the rumors he'd heard about this terrorist group, she'd likely be held in one of the piss-poor desert countries he'd spent the past fifteen years crawling all over. The only way her kid would stay alive was if she did exactly as she was told. Terence could almost pity her, except he was too busy counting those tantalizing zeros.

He leaned his head on the seat rest and closed his eyes, envisioning the approach route to grab his quarry. Inside the house or out? Dusk? Full dark? What would be the best escape path? He wished he didn't feel like he'd missed something important.

He looked over at Jimmy. "You're sure she lives alone? No lover who's out of town or on a military assignment? She's got a kid out of wedlock, so she's no saint."

"I'll check again." Jimmy tapped his smartphone and chomped his gum, his fingers flying over the keys.

The kid's computer hacking skills were useful. Only part of his brain that worked right, but he could find out anything about anyone.

"No husband. No lover. No baby daddy coming round. No siblings. No parents. No one will care when she disappears…except maybe the geeks at the university where she works."

"She got a gas line going into the house?"

He flipped through a couple of screens. "Yep. Stove. Perfect setup."

"If the fire is hot enough, it ought to destroy the DNA."

Jimmy drummed his fingers on the steering wheel. "Can I pick the people we're gonna kill now? Please."

"Okay. I guess you've earned it." Terence scratched his chest. "Remember, we need a woman and a child." He turned his head and met Jimmy's glassy-eyed gaze. His nephew was already imagining the kill in his mind, just as Terence used to. "So, where do we hunt?"

"Urnrnm…the mall?" His nephew bit his lip and sent Terence a cautious glance.

"The mall." What an idiot. "Why don't you pick the damn police station? The mall means video cameras, and the victim will likely be someone with money and ties to the community. That'll trigger a missing person's investigation. Television, newspapers." Terence glared, gripping his Bowie knife tighter. "I'm not gonna get caught 'cause you're stupid."

Jimmy swallowed so loud the gulp echoed through the van.

Yeah, the kid should be scared. The moment he screwed up, he'd disappear. Nephew or not. "Try again. This time use your brain."

Jimmy bit his lip, his brow furrowing in concentration. "A homeless shelter?"

"Not bad." Terence nodded at his nephew's hopeful expression, then slipped the knife back into its sheath. "I like it. Take us to the next county. I know just the place." He'd stayed there when he'd first been discharged. No one wanted to hire a vet with his record. He'd been at rock bottom then.

He leaned back in the van seat, satisfied how things had worked out. The ones who had looked down on him were all six feet under now. He'd made sure of that.

Just like he'd make sure that Dr. Erin Jamison and her son would disappear tonight. The whole world would believe they were dead.

Terence laughed. Before those bastards were through with her, she'd probably wish she was.

Hunter Graham paced his living room, cursing the sweltering New Orleans summers that made him feel so trapped. He'd been edgy all day, with nothing to account for it. Except maybe thinking about a trip he wanted to take, but couldn't.

He stared out the huge glass front windows. Heat rose in shimmering waves from the sidewalk and the early afternoon sun flooded his living room with glaring light and oppressive heat. What idiot came up with the brilliant notion of lining three-quarters of the room with huge panes of glass in a state frequented by severe wind gusts, killer storms and hurricanes?

Deserts, horses and horned toads sounded better and better every stifling day he spent here. He'd have been long gone back to Texas if not for Erin Jamison and the baby.

Was she the source of his edginess?

He continued pacing like a caged animal. Erin was his weakness. He had no friends outside the company. No family. No social life. He hadn't allowed himself a bit of softness since he'd screwed up and let Erin into his heart that week. What a stupid mistake seducing her had been. She and the baby could pay for that with their lives if his enemies found out.

Cursing one last time, he walked back to the state-of-the-art gym he'd set up in his living room.

Hunter centered himself on the vinyl seat of the weight bench, shoved the barbell straight up and locked his elbows. He focused on the weight, the tension in his arms, and pushed his feet into the floor, his entire body straining. Sweat pooled on his forehead.

Slowly, he lowered the two-hundred-fifty-pound bar to his chest. Aware of each muscle, he inhaled, then pressed up with a loud exhale. His arms trembled as he slowly lowered the bar back onto its stand.

God, he hated his existence. He wanted out. He wanted a life.

He wanted Erin…and his son.

Hunter's teeth ground together and he shoved the bar up again. He had to quit wishing for things he couldn't have. It was Logan Carmichael's fault. Six months ago, Hunter had spent his so-called vacation helping the ex-CIA agent stop a royal coup and some vicious terrorists who were trying to kill Logan and his newfound family. Carmichael was now the prince—and de facto security head—of the tiny European country of Bellevaux, ruling beside his wife, an ex-Texas cowgirl turned queen.

Seeing Logan so happy with his wife, son and daughter made unfamiliar envy rip through Hunter's gut. He'd given up his right to a family when he joined General Miller's clandestine group.

A loud tone buzzed on the wall screen. Someone at the company making contact. Hunter let out another curse. He was on vacation, supposedly incommunicado from everyone and everything. He needed this time to pull himself together. Giving up on a dream didn't come easy.

Scowling, Hunter tapped the remote in his pocket. Motorized shades slid down the windows, closing out the sun. The room went dark momentarily; automatic lights came on and a large wall screen flickered to life.

Hunter snagged a towel, mopped his face and looked at the screen. Leona, his handler at the company. The woman who held his life in her hands. She'd let her hair go gray, and it looked good on her, swept away from her face. She wasn't a day over sixty, feisty as hell and an inveterate flirt. He adored her, and owed her for saving his life several times over, including on that last mind-shattering assignment. He didn't know how she'd pulled it off, but no one would have come home without her intervention.

"Hi, handsome, you are quite a sight," Leona's husky voice drawled over the video conference. "If I weren't married and old enough to be your mother, I'd eat you for breakfast."

He tugged the towel around his neck and smiled. "If you weren't married to the man of your dreams, sweetie, I'd sweep you off to an uncharted island and we'd live happily ever after."

"If the idea of me leaving my hubby behind bothers you, we can always invite him along."

Hunter laughed. "Whoa, Leona. You're too wild for me. I don't think I can keep up."

She sighed. "Yeah, that's the story of my life…."

Hunter shot her a grin, then turned serious. "So, I know you didn't call to make Chuck jealous. What does General Miller want? He agreed to my three-week leave and—"

"Vacation's been canceled. He wants you in Kazakhstan ASAP. Another high-risk op with limited intel."

Hunter fought the cold sweat that enveloped him. His last mission for the clandestine agency had gone to hell. Limited. Right. An intelligence screwup more likely.

All Hunter knew was that when the ambush came, he hadn't reacted fast enough. He'd been injured in the firestorm, but two members of the team had taken enough shrapnel to start a scrap metal business. Both men survived, but they'd never be the same. One would never walk again.

Hunter blamed himself. Those were his men, and his instincts usually warned him of danger. He hadn't seen this one coming.

"I can't go yet. I need some time." He'd felt driven to check on Erin and his son for days. Every fiber in his being urged him to take that trip to Pensacola. Maybe instead of torturing himself by watching from afar, he should say goodbye for good.

"Look, Hunter, Miller's not the only reason I'm calling."

Hunter tensed. Leona's voice had changed, taking on a note of urgency he recognized and that never boded well. He slipped on his sweatshirt to fight his sudden chill. "What's going on?"

A shadow crossed her face. Leona stiffened suddenly, peered over her shoulder and quickly looked back at her computer. In a businesslike voice, she said, "Yes, sir, I can get that information for you."

Confused, Hunter left the weight machines and walked over to the video system. "Are you talking to me?"

Leona shook her head slightly and tapped a few keys. "I'll forward the data to your desk."

When her visitor left, she rose and shut her door. "This has to be fast. Are you alone?"

Hunter caught the strain in her voice and, for the first time, noticed the worry lines on her forehead and bracketing her tight smile. "You have my attention."

Leona leaned forward in her chair. "Remember the personal favor you requested of me about a year ago?"

Oh, hell, no. Erin. Leona had heard something.

He'd prayed this day would never come. "Yeah, I remember." Hunter's stomach clenched. "Are we secure?"

"No one listens in on my encryption. Not even the good guys." Leona tapped her keyboard, and half the screen filled with translated transmissions. "As you can see, there's been chatter about Dr. Jamison for the past few weeks."

"Weeks? Why are you just telling me now?"

"It took a while for me to identify who the references specifically meant. Besides—" Leona quirked an eyebrow "—when did you want me to tell you? When your cover was getting blown by a rogue informant or during your latest firefight?"

Hunter shoved his hand through his hair. "Point taken."

"Besides, the intel wasn't specific enough until now. Hunter, she's in trouble."

"The info is verified?"

"Affirmative, and action is imminent. According to the chatter, one of the Seattle cells is making a delivery of human cargo tonight. Your cargo. Both of them. Final destination—unknown."

Hunter swore. "Get me off the Kazakhstan mission. Tell General Miller I've got the flu. I died. I've lost it. Whatever will work."

"Convincing him of anything is not easy these days, Hunter. You're his go-to guy for the tougher ops, and he knows you don't break. He said—and I quote—'I want him back in the saddle fast after the last trip's. unfortunate outcome.'"

Hunter stilled. "Unfortunate outcome? Half the team got shot up. Drummond and O'Reilly are still in ICU at the hospital, hooked up to a million wires and life support. Yeah, that's unfortunate."

Anger laced every word, but guilt lay heavy on Hunter's shoulders. There was plenty of blame to go around. In hindsight, he should have seen the ambush coming. Then again, the company should have, too, and well in advance. Either someone screwed up big-time or someone was out to get them.

"I can't go to Kazakhstan. Not until I know Erin is safe."

"I finagled what I could. You have five days before you have to report. I've already set the contingency plan you worked out for Dr. Jamison in motion."

"You're an angel." Hunter snagged his ready bag from the closet.

"The plane is fueled and standing by. You'll be at Eglin in one hour."

"Thanks."

"I've got your back…Clay Griffin. Don't mess up." Clay Griffin.

An alias he hadn't used in almost two years. One he hadn't expected to hear or use ever again. Erin knew him by that name.

As Clay Griffin, he'd loved her, lied to her and left her, but it was Hunter Graham who dreamed of her every night, wishing he'd never been forced to abandon her and the child they'd conceived.

The moment he'd learned she was pregnant, he'd longed to go to her, but he had to stay away…to protect her and his son.

His efforts hadn't mattered, though. Erin's genius had put her in danger. Now he had to go to her, save her and his son, and leave them. Again.

Yeah, no doubt about it. His life pretty much sucked.

SO Good!
By Amazon Customer
This book had my heart pounding on the very first page.

Romantic suspense--or any suspense for that matter--are not my usual cuppa, but I got sucked into this one because of the description, and before I knew it I was lost in the story. The villains at the beginning of the book are so despicable that reading it was like covering your eyes with your hands but being unable to resist peeking through your fingers! And, ohhh, the hero...underneath that steely, hunky exterior Hunter had a heart so tender and so raw and hurting that I couldn't wait to see him and Erin reach their happily-ever-after.

The love story was intense, the action believable, the resolution satisfying. I loved every heart-pounding minute of it.

Good book!

I really enjoyed this story. The plot sucked me, and it was so hard to put down, when I had to go to work. The suspense was really good, and I enjoyed the action, and romance.

I really loved the way Hunter risked his own life, and also his heart to keep Erin and his son safe. He made some hard decisions, which no one should ever have to make.

Brandon stole my heart in this story. He was a cute little baby boy. No matter what they were going through he was fine as long as his mother Erin was nearby.

I was so glad that Hunter, and Erin got their Happy ever after. Great book that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Action packed
By Cindy O
Another great action packed, peril all around romance.

Lots of characters back in this latest edge of your seat book. Hunter had one week in paradise with a beautiful scientist. But when that week was over he walked away because there can be no family with his job. He finds out that Erin got pregnant from that week but still doesn't go to her just watches her from afar. When he gets word that she and his son are going to be kidnapped for the ground breaking medical research she was doing he kidnaps them instead to save their lives.

From here these two travel all over the place trying to stay one step ahead of the bad guys and use the help of many previous characters to do so. There was a huge what I will call arc finished in this book, defiantly didn't go the way I thought it would but it also led to a new beginning for the team. Looking forward to many more books about these guys.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-The material in this well-researched set is divided into 11 chapters covering the Colonial era, Westward movement, the Civil War, World War II, the Korean and early Cold Wars, and the post-Cold War era, including recent conflicts in the Middle East and Afghanistan. Each chapter begins with an extensive overview of the era, followed by date entries that vary from just a few lines to multiple pages in length. Entries about important battles are marked by a stylized sunburst. When appropriate, articles are accompanied by informatively captioned black-and-white charts, battle maps, art reproductions, and/or vintage photos; all are followed by further reading suggestions. Adding significantly to the value of the set are the numerous boxed articles. Usually at least a page long, they offer, for example, biographies of military leaders and descriptions and histories of planes, ships, and various weapons. Chapters conclude with excerpts from primary documents, statistics, and an extensive bibliography. Volume 4 contains appendixes of general statistics, military ranks, and military awards and decorations; a glossary; a comprehensive bibliography; and chronological and general indexes. This is by far one of the best military chronologies available today and it deserves a place in most collections.-Eldon Younce, Anthony Public Library, KSα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist
This chronology demonstrates the entwining of American military history with American political history from the era of voyages of discovery (when European monarchs vied for North American colonies) through the U.S.’ post 9/11 ventures in the Middle East. In four volumes, 11 sections are devoted to a major time period and trace the interplay of the military and the political. An overview essay provides context for the incident-by-incident reports of relevant events in each period. This includes events such as the Treaty of Paris ending the Revolutionary War; the clash of the ironclad ships Virginia and Monitor in 1862; the Battle of the Little Bighorn; the destruction of the USS Maine in Havana’s harbor; the assassination of Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo; the Doolittle raid over Tokyo in 1942; the Six-Day War in 1967; the fall of Saigon in April 1975; and the invasion of Iraq in 2003. These stand out in stark relief amid the thousands of military, diplomatic, and political incidents chronicled over more than five centuries Sidebar articles describe significant weapons and technologies, profile American and Native American military leaders, map battles, and reprint excerpts from landmark documents (e.g., an account of the Boston Tea Party; Lee’s report to Jefferson Davis on the Battle of Gettysburg; Woodrow Wilson’s “The Fourteen Points” address to Congress; Eisenhower’s “Order of the Day” for June 6, 1944; George W. Bush’s “Axis of Evil” speech). This excellent set offers more comprehensive coverage and describes each event in greater detail than John Fredriksen’s Chronology of American Military History (2010). Although other almanacs and chronologies devoted to specific wars expand on this set’s coverage, this chronology will serve students well, especially in libraries that lack Fredriksen’s or that require more granular detail. --James Rettig

"For easily understandable and well-written conformity, undergraduates will profit by having Tucker's work available. Recommended." - Choice

"This is by far one of the best military chronologies available today and it deserves a place in most collections." - School Library Journal

"Tucker nails it again in these 2,500 pages of excellent writing that cover a wealth of historical information. For these reasons, plus the fact that military events account for a large subset of general American history, this set is heartily recommended for public and academic libraries." - Library Journal, Starred Review

A Handbook for the Art and Science of Teaching, by Robert J. Marzano, John L. Brown

How can I make certain that all my students achieve success in mastering learning goals—and play an active role in monitoring and adjusting their own learning process? How can I manage my classroom so that all students are engaged, challenged, and active members of my classroom's learning community? How can I design units and lessons so that they promote maximum success for every learner?

Learning how to become an effective teacher involves finding answers to these and countless other questions. In A Handbook for the Art and Science of Teaching, Robert J. Marzano and John L. Brown help you explore and refine your instructional strategies, always with the goal of enhancing student achievement.

As a companion volume to Marzano's The Art and Science of Teaching, the handbook is intended to be a guide for individual teachers, study groups, and professional developers working together to improve their teaching. It is organized into 25 modules, each related to one of the 10 design questions introduced in the earlier book. Each module begins with a series of reflection questions and concludes with a set of self-assessment questions that allow the reader to determine areas that might need further work. At the heart of each module are specific strategies for addressing the key components of effective teaching. Dozens of examples illustrate the strategies in action in elementary and secondary classrooms, in all subject areas.

The strategies provide a thorough grounding in the “science” of teaching. How a teacher chooses to implement them constitutes the “art” of teaching. Both elements are necessary for improving student achievement and creating successful schools. For anyone committed to developing a wide range of teaching skills, this handbook is a welcome road map to best practices.

A very highly recommended addition to any teacher training curriculum
By Midwest Book Review
Every working day, a teacher's ultimate goal, regardless of the curriculum content or classroom subject matter, is to teach their students how to think, how to solve problems, how to analyze and respond to information. That's why the collaboratively developed textbook "A Handbook For The Art And Science Of Teaching" by Robert J. Marzano (Senior Scholar, Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning, Denver, Colorado) and John L. Brown (ASCD educational consultant) is so critically important for any educator tasked with the responsibility of teaching whether in the role of a simple tutorial or addressing students within the context of a classroom. As comprehensive as it is practical, "A Handbook For The Art And Science Of Teaching" addresses such issues as establishing and communicating learning goals, aiding students in effectively interacting, helping students develop practice skills, inculcating abilities to create and test hypothesis and higher-order thinking, establishing classroom rules and decorum, develop effective lesson plans, and so much more. Wether as a classroom textbook for student teacher courses, or as an instructional reference for in-service teacher training for established classroom instructors, "A Handbook For The Art And Science Of Teaching" is a very highly recommended addition to any teacher training curriculum.

A Handbook for the Art and SCience of Teaching
By Amazon Customer
This handbook is a companion to Marzano's book The Art and Science of Teaching. It assists teachers in applying the framework for effective instrucion found in the above mentioned text. Both books are used as text books in Marzano's Master's in Education degree program. They are also very useful for teachers who want to find a more effective way to implement their classroom instruction.

Must Read!
By Combatpainter
Teachers get this! Marzano is "THE" guy to read. The text is the primary source. This handbook breaks it all down even further and lays down a map and a series of questions to gauge your comprehension of the concepts. Every teacher staff development workshop has is built upon a Marzano template of sorts. The handbook breaks down every part of teaching and labels it while giving priceless examples of how a teacher would apply it to the classroom. This is a fascinating experience and gives you an insight into every aspect of teaching from initial engagement, critical input activities and conclusion of the lesson.

You need to know this inside and out to justify your choices in the classroom when discussing your choices with other teachers or for pre/post observations conferences with administrators. If you are an administrator, board member or teacher, this is a 'MUST" read. The title says it all: Teaching is an art and a science. Marzano gets it! Now everybody else needs to as well. It takes 10 years for school instructional changes to translate into higher test scores. It takes teachers 15 years to become truly proficient in their craft. It is not an overnight thing.

What is it missing??? Well, are kids equally ready to learn? Nature VS Nurture themes are not mentioned. Are kids mentally, physically and emotionally ready at the same grade level??? I guess he just takes for granted the reality of the field. Some patients are healthy and others are critical when they arrive. This is for the teacher and school support staff to figure out I guess.
