This handbook is a companion to Marzano's book The Art and Science of Teaching. It assists teachers in applying the framework for effective instrucion found in the above mentioned text. Both books are used as text books in Marzano's Master's in Education degree program. They are also very useful for teachers who want to find a more effective way to implement their classroom instruction.

Teachers get this! Marzano is "THE" guy to read. The text is the primary source. This handbook breaks it all down even further and lays down a map and a series of questions to gauge your comprehension of the concepts. Every teacher staff development workshop has is built upon a Marzano template of sorts. The handbook breaks down every part of teaching and labels it while giving priceless examples of how a teacher would apply it to the classroom. This is a fascinating experience and gives you an insight into every aspect of teaching from initial engagement, critical input activities and conclusion of the lesson.
You need to know this inside and out to justify your choices in the classroom when discussing your choices with other teachers or for pre/post observations conferences with administrators. If you are an administrator, board member or teacher, this is a 'MUST" read. The title says it all: Teaching is an art and a science. Marzano gets it! Now everybody else needs to as well. It takes 10 years for school instructional changes to translate into higher test scores. It takes teachers 15 years to become truly proficient in their craft. It is not an overnight thing.
What is it missing??? Well, are kids equally ready to learn? Nature VS Nurture themes are not mentioned. Are kids mentally, physically and emotionally ready at the same grade level??? I guess he just takes for granted the reality of the field. Some patients are healthy and others are critical when they arrive. This is for the teacher and school support staff to figure out I guess.
