Kids love Captain Awesome!
By mb
Captain Awesome is a great series for emergent readers! They will laugh out loud at the captain's adventures and terrific illustrations which compliment the chapter book. I've had students who never show interest in reading beg for the titles in this series. Keep up the great work Captain!

Great for New and Younger Readers
By Pop Bop
Eugene and Charlie, aka Captain Awesome and Nacho Cheese Man, keep Sunnyview Elementary safe from eeeevil. They do this with so much energy, and manic dedication, that their characters practically jump off the page, high five the reader, and drag him back into the story. They have the kind of single-minded, lunatic, high spirits that are like, (to quote Eugene), "...Christmas, wrapped up in a birthday, sitting in a bucket of Halloween candy."
There are lots of kid friendly high energy books around, but many of them seem, I don't know, maybe sort of forced. I really like the Captain Awesome books because even though sometimes they are a little bumpy and scattershot, they seem genuine. These characters are way over the top, but their commitment to being superheroes, to being good guys and doing right, seems honest the way only second and third graders can be when they're totally interested in something.
And while this book has great characters and a very good humored vibe maybe the greatest appeal of this series is that the stories rocket along but are easy to follow every step of the way. We meet the heroes, and the villain, and then we set up the plot, and then neat stuff happens. And then all ends well. And the whole tale is told in a breathless and awesome sort of way.
Here, Captain Awesome is conflicted about Valentine's Day and its pinkness. (Pink is Awesome's Kryptonite.) He also has a little sneaker for Sally, who is a pretty sharp and level-headed cookie, and may be superhero, ("Supersonic Sal"), material herself. There is less nutsy action in this one, but a great deal of charm in a mild growing up sort of way. The whole who'll-get-a-Valentine storyline is a bit of a change of pace from the other books, but adds a little something to the Captain Awesome characters and story.
There are no awkward moments; there is no message or agenda beyond encouraging kids to be strong and honest and involved. There is some potty humor but not the crude or insistent kind. No one is mean and the kids in the heroes' school class are decent and supportive. There are real jokes and some funny exchanges that exhibit wit and a sly understanding on the author's part of what younger readers like.
The story is very effectively supported and enhanced by the drawings which are in tune with the energy and cheerfulness of the writing, and sometimes really help to show a young reader what's going on.
So, a solid early chapter book with very manageable reading content and a lot of appeal. Please note that I found this in our local e-library and have no connection to the author or publisher.

Read in a day
By myche mobley
My 6 year old is obsessed with Captain Awesome. He even dressed as Captain Awesome for Halloween! He received this book for Christmas and was done with it in else's than a day. He sat down and read the whole thing in about 45 minutes. He only has two complaints about this book. 1. He wishes they were longer. 2. He wishes there were more books, or even a t.v. show. Happy he has found a positive kid character he feels he can relate to!
