Twins Austin and Marsh Windsor looked so much alike that they were sometimes mistaken for each other, even by their girlfriends and high school classmates. The night Austin was killed in a car accident, they were on a double date, and Marsh was driving. To deal with his grief, he looks for a “thin space”–a mythic doorway where the living and dead can temporarily pass through into the worlds they left behind. Thin spaces don't come about easily; the same soul must both quicken and die in the same spot in order for an entry spot to be created. A woman had promised to make a thin space with her death, but a new family moves into her house before Marsh can get in and investigate. He hits upon a plan to befriend the new teenage residents, Maddie and Sam. Marsh and Maddie go barefoot through hospital corridors and across snow-covered parking lots, trying to find an entrance to the world of the dead. Throughout the book, the pressures of school and family weigh realistically on the protagonist; his mother needs to be hugged and classes need to be attended, even as he is falling apart with guilt and secrets. It turns out Maddie has a secret of her own. The final plot twist will catch most readers by surprise, making a second reading almost mandatory, to look for missed clues. Taut and heartwrenching

You'd never know THIN SPACE is a debut novel. It's superbly written, with spare prose that describes characters in just a few strokes and delivers a fairly complicated plot with one big twist and several smaller ones clearly and effectively. There are paranormal elements, but it's really a story grounded in the universal human experiences of loss, identity, love, responsibility, and other themes that most people, like the book's main character, Marsh, first grapple with as teenagers.

Before the book starts, Marsh's twin, Austin, was killed in a car accident. Marsh's feelings of guilt seem to go even deeper than you would expect from the fact that Marsh was driving when the fatality occurred. He had done something "stupid" that somehow had a factor in Austin's death.

According to Celtic lore, a "thin space" is created when someone dies in the same place where s/he was born. Marsh is determined to locate such a space and find his brother. And do what? Explain? Right the wrong? We don't know, and it doesn't seem as if March does either. He's aided by new-girl-in-town Maddie, who has some secrets of her own.

When the twists and other secrets are revealed, readers get a D'oh! moment--"I should have seen this coming!" But you don't, even though they seem obvious once revealed because the groundwork has been so carefully and deftly laid.

The story doesn't wrap everything up in a neat bow, but the characters are left well on the road to healing.

Disclaimer: I know Jody Casella and have admired her writing for years. But I know a lot of authors and you won't see many five-star reviews from me here (trust me; I've read dozens more books than I've reviewed).

Great character story, but wish there was more paranormal aspects

The summary for this book sounded super intriguing and sounded like it would be bursting with paranormal happenings and elements. Unfortunately, THIN SPACE didn't deliver this as much as I would have liked. There were some great aspects of the novel that I loved, but there were also some things that fell flat for me.

Marsh has lost his other half and is living through a fog the months after his brother was killed in a car accident that he was the driver of. He walks around barefoot and just goes through the motions, not truly knowing what is going on around. He is sad, depressed, and absolutely desperate to find this mythical thin space that his old neighbor told him about. He believes it's the only way to fix things and to see his brother again.

The whole first half of the novel was Marsh post falling apart. It's obvious that he's hit rock bottom. He doesn't talk to anyone, no one talks to him. This section of the book is basically just Marsh thinking to himself. You really don't get any interaction with others. While this is critical to showing Marsh's downfall, it did get a bit irritating. I liked Marsh's voice but I wanted to get to know other characters, hear a dialogue, something. I got kind of tired of just being inside his head.

When the girl next door, Maddie, moved in, the novel picked up quite significantly. She was a happy go lucky, shy girl who brought some new dynamics to the scene. She got Marsh to talk and open up. She had a history of her own that slowly was unveiled. She wasn't perfect but I really liked how she added to the novel and woke up Marsh, so to speak. She took everything weird that Marsh said or did with a grain of salt and joined him in his search for a thin space. Like I said, this is when the novel finally picked up. They are now on a search, looking in strange places they think the thin space would be. They had deep conversations and it was enjoyable to read.

There is a big twist near the end. BIG. It'll make you go back and reread things. You'll be honestly sitting on your bed thinking for a good 30 minutes. After I finished, I was still thinking about the implications of this twist. I did see it coming, though. I had my suspicions here and there but I never expected that I would be right. It changes the novel completely and I liked what it did to my whole reading experience.

Overall, THIN SPACE is more of a character story about what it's like to lose the one person you thought you would be with the rest of your life, your brother, your twin. It was deep, emotional, and raw. I really liked watching Marsh learn to deal with this loss, cope, and find a way to move on and open up to someone else. I do wish there was more paranormal aspects of the novel, though. I think that would have added to the novel significantly and kept it more interesting. But this book will leave you thinking and rethinking everything you just read, you can count on that!

A Great First Book

It's hard to believe this is Jody Casella's first published novel. Thin Space is a great read, a real page-turner. It's a little creepy, though in a good way. But mostly it's a heartfelt exploration of one boy's grief and his response to it. The author is so in touch with her characters that she brings them to life. I really cared what happened to them. I will read this book again, maybe several times, to explore all the nuances in this wonderful character study.

About the Author

William Edgar (DTheol, University of Geneva) is professor of apologetics and coordinator of the apologetics department at Westminster Theological Seminary. His books include Reasons of the Heart, The Face of Truth, and Truth in All Its Glory.

Stephen J. Nichols (PhD, Westminster Theological Seminary) is president of Reformation Bible College and chief academic officer of Ligonier Ministries. Previously, he served as research professor of Christianity and culture at Lancaster Bible College. He is an editor (with Justin Taylor) of the Theologians on the Christian Life series and is the author of several books, including The Reformation, For Us and for Our Salvation, The Church History ABCs, and Bonhoeffer on the Christian Life.

This book captures the spirit of L'Abri

The first chapter of this book drew us in, helped us imagine the atmosphere of L'Abri, and convinced us we needed to read more of Edith and Fran's books. William Edgar is the perfect man to write this book about Fran and his spirituality. As a nineteen year old student, Mr. Edgar met an extraordinary professor and friend of Fran's who witnessed to him about the glories of the Christian worldview and suggested that William visit L'Abri. It was summer time, in the 60's, and this reader of Camus and believer in existentialism found himself calling Mrs. Schaeffer and making plans to stay at The Shelter, L'Abri, for the weekend.

We read of the trip up the Swiss mountainside in the mail bus, climbing up to a place named for Psalm 91:1 He who dwells in the Shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

Upon arriving, William is given a bag of fresh peas and asked to help shell them for lunch tomorrow. A group of people is busily shelling peas, listening to one of Fran's lectures on tape. Walking outside before supper, William found Fran. Fran's principle legacy is no doubt people, William tells us, for he experienced this himself. "I knew right who he was, even though I had never seen a picture of him. His face was radiant. Slightly wrinkled, his visage communicated the weight of many years, years of suffering and of pondering deeply, and yet also a fundamental joy. He was fifty two at the time. He came right up to me, obviously knowing who I was, and extended his hand for a warm greeting. I'll never forget his broad smile, so full of kindness. I felt right at home in this strange and wonderful place."

God was working in this Shelter. After supper came a time of discussion and prayer. "At L'Abri, prayer was not a ritual. It was practiced as though, were there no God, this would have been the most absurd performance possible."
God was moving in Mr. Edgar's life. "I would later understand that the Holy Spirit was prompting me, moving me toward the Savior. But for now, it was simply something from another world."

At worship the next morning, they began to sing Bach chorales in four part harmony. "How good could it get? As a music student, I had spent two years in Harvard analyzing Bach...and here we were not studying them, but singing them and believing them."

Fran had invited him to meet with him and talk after worship, and he went up to a little chamber and sat with him. Fran greeted him "with that same profound face, its warm grin and the clear sense that he cared about me as well as the issues we needed to discuss." William asked questions, and "he came back with an extensive, thoughtful reply. We went back and forth. After a couple of hours, I just knew this was all true. If it is possible to feel the Holy Spirit come into one's heart, I could and I did... Less than twenty four hours after my arrival at L'Abri my life was completely turned upside down. Or was it right side up?"

Through this book we learn that L'Abri was a place of serious study and practical care for people. Apologetics with a touch, Ravi Zacharias calls it. And this makes sense, because Fran and Edith wanted to provide both theological precision and loving community.
Listen to William Edgar describe this... "Francis Schaeffer was a brilliant man...his method of learning was...more an informal collecting of insights from Scripture, people, articles, clippings, and his own hunches." He could defend Scripture before Buddhists or liberals, and at the same time in the Scaheffer home you were made to feel like a friend... "There were usually tea and cookies, a warm fire and then intense discussions about the Christian world-and-life view with any guest who showed up." In contrast, much evangelism today is "not only sub Christian, but sub human- legalistic and impersonal."

This is a reminder we all need, every day. Someone, somewhere, is leaving what they think is cold orthodoxy. It is not orthodoxy that is at fault- not at all! It is a lack of heart. Through the reuniting of the two "Fran and Edith rescued numerous evangelicals who were ready to jettison their faith because it was not lived out with beauty and reality." Fran and Edith were "a statement of authenticity in a compromised church."

This is what we are to take away from the work of L'Abri, and from the work and life of Fran. "Christ is Lord of all of Life, and because of that, there is no realm of life not subject to our scrutiny and to our calling as Christians in the world. For many, this calling and this practice represent what is so wonderful, so exciting, about the Schaeffer legacy."

Excellent Introduction to Schaeffer

Francis Schaeffer - the mere mention of his name makes some people upset while others pause to remember his life and legacy. While I am only very recently becoming acquainted with Schaeffer's life and thought, I often find myself as I read his works thanking God for his life and witness. Furthermore, I think his approach towards apologetics is one that needs to be revisited. For this and many other reasons, I was excited when I read Dr. William Edgar new book Schaeffer on the Christian Life Countercultural Spirituality. This book is part of the Theologians on the Christian life series that aims to provide accessible introductions to the great teachers on the Christian life.

Francis Schaefer was one of the most influential apologists of the twentieth century. Through his speaking, writing, and filmmaking, Schaeffer successful transformed the way people thought of the Christian faith, from a rather private kind of piety to a worldview that addressed every sphere of life. This book by Dr. Edgar, a man converted from agnosticism within days of meeting Schaeffer, is the first book devoted to exploring the heart and soul of Schaeffer's approach to the Christian life and thus will help readers strive after the same kind of marriage of thought and life, or orthodoxy and love as espoused by Schaeffer.

Dr. Edgar begins the book by introducing his story of meeting Schaeffer and continues on with Schaeffer's journey and experience at L'Abri to include the impact of Schaeffer's teaching on true spirituality. The book concludes by examining what it looks like to trust God for all of life, reflections on Francis Schaeffer, and a look at various titles in the complete works of Francis Schaeffer.

The impressive thing about Schaeffer is not only did he understand the Gospel clearly as the foundation for Christian life and practice, but he also sought to implement that into everything he did. Schaeffer's concern to defend the authority of the Bible resonates well with me as that is one of my own greatest concerns for our generation. Dr. Edgar notes, "Schaeffer defends the Bible's authority all through his work. His central apologetic concern is that we not dichotomize the Bible's message as being true only in the religious sphere while fallible in the realms where science and history can verify its claims. The "religious" truth of the Bible is one of the same nature as the truth about everyday life. If the Bible affirms the physical resurrection of Jesus, then his body will never be found where he was buried. Ultimately, the Hebrew and biblical view grounds the truth in the character of God, who reveals himself in both the creation and especial revelation." (p. 85)

It seems popular for some Christians to just come to the Bible to "prove" their position, however, this approach isn't helpful. Christians are to be people of the Book which means we are to read it, study it, mediate upon it and apply its truth to every area of life. Following in the footsteps of Schaeffer, Christians are called to stand firm upon the authority and inspiration of the Bible and not diminish in anyway what they believe about the Truth of the Word. Rather, we must come under the authority of the Word of God. Sadly, one of my greatest concerns for this generation of Christians is that we fundamental dismiss the sufficiency of Scripture while pledging allegiance to an inspired and authoritative Word. That makes no sense. The Bible is authorative and inspired and as a result we must submit to what it teaches. If we believe the Bible is authoritative and inspired but fail to submit to it then we don't believe the Bible. It makes no sense to come to a Bible we say we believe but don't implement it truths into our lives. The evidence of our lives speaks against our profession. Following in the line of Schaeffer and many others, we need to stand firm on the truthfulness of the Word of God and in no way through our lives and work deny the Truth of the Bible. Excellent Book and Series

I dig this series. Last year I reviewed Warfield on the Christian Life: Living in Light of the Gospel so check that out. I was overjoyed to receive word on three more in this series (Schaeffer, Bonhoeffer, & Wesley) being released this year. The Schaeffer volume being the first of the bunch. These books are theological biographies focusing on the major contributions of our spiritual forefathers.

William Edgar has a unique perspective into the impact of Francis Schaeffer's ministry because he was converted at L'abri and spent considerable time with the Schaeffer's. Because of this close proximity, Edgar is able to not only explore the Schaeffer's counterculture spirituality but also speak frankly about how the Schaeffer's lived out this spirituality daily. He highlights the successes and he doesn't shy away from the shadows. I appreciated the inclusion of Edith Schaeffer's theology as well. This wasn't just Francis's ministry; Edith played a vital role at L'abri (and had her own views on theological points).

What struck me most was the Schaeffers's daily expression of dependence on God through a robust prayer life. Every thing they needed at L'abri they prayed for and trusted God for. It challenged me to daily express my dependence on God by approaching him with my every day needs. There is something counterculture about that even among Christians. Maybe it shouldn't be. In the West we live an abundant life and we don't know how to wage war on our self-dependence through prayer. We don't know how to bring our burdens to the throne of grace. We have our daily needs met by default. If we waged war on our self-dependence I wonder if we would think more deeply about what we truly need, what we could truly give, and what God would receive the glory for providing.

I could spend a lot of time discussing Schaeffer's apologetic approach but I'll keep it short. We could all learn a lesson from the way he engaged people in a way which put them off balance while expressing care and love. Schaeffer learned that truth always required love and we could learn that lesson in our current culture.

If you want to counter our current age's blindspots I would recommend reading this series on Christian living. It will provide a helpful introduction to church history and biography within the framework of the theological contribution of these men.

Interesting historical novel set mostly in Malaya (now Malaysia) with some chapters in Cambridge, England, and Tibet, during the turbulent times of WWII, the ending of the British Empire, and Mao's China.

A gripping human drama which sheds light on a turbulent period of Malaysia's history. Highly recommended

This is a superbly paced novel. The plot has clear direction and moves swiftly from joy to tragedy with minor detours through comedy and pathos. The characters are elegantly described and the relationships between them sing. Set against the backdrop of some of Malaysia's most traumatic periods, the writer maintains a find balance between historical narrative and fiction. The accuracy of the historical description never dominates but adds to the fascinating dynamics between the protagonists. Above all, the strength of the main characters shines through and will create a memory which lingers long after you have finished the novel.

This would make an excellent choice for a book club or reading group.

A must Read

It was hard to put this down once you had started. I live in Malaysia and am familiar with some of the history. I found it more interesting in that it seemed to accurately to follow the historical timelines.
Also the female characters were such strong women.
Truly enjoyable.

Andreas Xenakis didn't like the strength of the thrill of triumph that moved through him. It signified that this moment held more importance for him than he'd care to admit. Bitterly, he had to concede that perhaps it did. After all, practically within touching distance now was the woman who had all but cried rape for her own amusement, to protect her untarnished image in her father's eyes. She'd merited him a savage beating, losing his job, being blacklisted from every hotel in Europe and having to start over again on the other side of the world. Far away from anyone he'd known or who had known him.

She was still exquisite. More so. Andreas had found himself imagining that she couldn't possibly be as stunning as she'd been since he'd seen her five years ago. But she was. She was a woman now, not a teenager.

Her hair was so blonde it shone almost white under the soft lighting of a hundred chandeliers. It was pulled up into a high bun. She held herself with the same effortlessly regal bearing he'd first noticed in that glittering ballroom in Paris. His mouth compressed. She was a thoroughbred in the midst of lesser beings. He could see how women near her instinctively shut her out, as if sensing competition.

His eyes moved over the curve of her cheek and jaw. The patrician line of her nose more than hinted at the blue-blooded heritage of her Italian ancestry, diluted only in part by her half English mother who had been related to royalty. Her skin was still pale and looked soft: as soft as a rose petal. Andreas's belly clenched hard to recall just how soft it had felt under his fingers.

He'd touched her reverently, as if she were an ethereal goddess, and he'd felt as if he was marking her, staining her purity with his touch. His hands were fists by his sides now as he thought of how she'd urged him on with breathy, sexy entreaties in his ear: 'Please.I want you to touch me, Andreas.' Only to turn on him almost in the same breath and accuse him of attacking her…

She turned then, to face towards him, and that low, simmering anger was eclipsed when blood rushed to his head and to his groin, making him simultaneously dizzy and hard.

He couldn't escape the impact of those huge, glittering bright blue eyes ringed with long dark lashes. But it was her mouth which drew his gaze and kept it. Sinfully lush and pink. Just waiting to be kissed…crushed under his. Andreas had to consciously will down the intense desire. He was fast being reduced to the instincts of an animal, and he hated her for having this effect on him. Still. For ever, mocked the small voice in his head.

No. Andreas rejected it fiercely. Not for ever. Just until he'd had her. Until they'd finished what she'd started when she'd upended his life so cruelly and comprehensively. Because she'd been curious and bored. Because she'd had the power. Because he'd been nothing.

Resolve firmed in Andreas's gut. He was far from nothing any more, and thanks to a cruel twist of circumstances Siena DePiero was reduced to lower than he'd ever been, rendering her exposed and vulnerable—to him.

Her blonde head dipped out of view momentarily and Andreas's insides contracted with something indefinable that went beyond where he wanted to investigate. He didn't like the fact that he was uncomfortably aware of other men's interest, of their gazes after her, covetous and even lascivious. It made him feel possessive and that was not welcome.

She'd had the gall to play with him once. Andreas desired her. That was all. His eyes caught sight of her bright blonde head again and he watched and waited as she drew ever closer to him in the crowd.

Siena DePiero was in the act of navigating through the crowd with a heavy tray, trying not to upend the contents over someone's feet, when a broad chest at her eye level stopped her from moving forward.

She looked up and had the impression of a very tall man, broad all the way through to his shoulders. A pristine tuxedo with a white bow-tie marked him out as slightly different. As Siena's mouth opened to say excuse me her gaze reached his face and her heart stopped.

He was no stranger.

The recognition was instantaneous. The knowledge was cataclysmic. It was as if mere minutes had passed since she'd last seen him, yet it had been five years. He looked bigger, darker, leaner.

She could instantly read the unmistakable light of cold hatred in his eyes and her insides contracted painfully. Of all the people to meet in this situation. No one would get more mileage out of it than Andreas Xenakis. And could she even blame him? a small voice mocked.

'Well, well, well.'

His voice was painfully familiar, immediately twisting her insides into a knot of tension. 'Fancy meeting you here.'

Siena could feel his eyes rake her up and down, taking in her server's uniform of white shirt, black tie and black trousers. The effect he had on her now was as devastating as it had been five years before. It was as if she had been plugged into an electrical socket and the current was running through her blood, making it hum, as disturbing and disconcerting as she remembered—especially in light of what had happened.

Her insides contracted even more painfully.

Dark slashing brows framed his incredible navy blue eyes. High cheekbones drew the eye down to a strong jaw. And his mouth…that beautiful sensuous mouth…was all at once sexy and mocking. He lifted one brow, clearly waiting for a response.

Struggling to retain some sense of composure, when she felt like a tiny boat being lashed on high seas, Siena managed to find her voice and said coolly, 'Mr Xenakis. How nice to see you again.'

His arched brow went higher and he let out a curt laugh. His voice wasn't so heavily accented any more. It had more of a mid-Atlantic twang. 'Even now you can make it sound as if you're greeting me at your own dinner party—not serving drinks to people you once woudn't deign to look in the eye.'

Siena flinched minutely. She didn't have to be psychic to recognise that the man who stood before her now was a much harder and more ruthless creature than the man she'd met in Paris. Xenakis's meteoric rise to become one of the world's most prominent hoteliers at the ridiculously young age of thirty had been well documented in the press.

'I'm flattered you remember me,' he drawled, 'After all we've met only once—as memorable as that meeting was.'

He mocked her. Siena felt like pointing out pedantically that it had actually been twice. After all, she'd seen him again the morning after that catastrophic night. But that memory was far too much to handle right now.

'Yes.' She glanced away for a minute, uncomfortable under that dark gaze. 'Of course I remember you.'

Suddenly it was too much. The tray of glasses started to wobble alarmingly in Siena's hands as the full magnitude of seeing him again hit her. Surprising her, Andreas took it competently out of her white-knuckled grasp and put it down on a nearby table before she could object.

Just then they were interrupted by Siena's boss, who was shooting none too subtle daggers at Siena while smiling obsequiously at Andreas.

'Mr Xenakis, is everything all right here? If my staff have been in any way remiss—'

'No.' His voice was abrupt, cold. He truly was Lord of all he surveyed now. Exuding power and confidence and that tangible sexual charisma.

Feeling a little dizzy, Siena tuned back in to Xenakis's voice, being directed to her boss.

'Everything is fine. I am acquainted with Miss—'

Siena cut in urgently before Xenakis could say her hated name, 'Mr Xenakis, like I said, it was nice to see you again. If you'll excuse me, though, I really should get back to work.'

Siena picked up the heavy tray again and, without looking at Andreas Xenakis or her boss, fled on very shaky legs.

Andreas followed the progress of the bright blonde head, inordinately annoyed with this small rotund man for interrupting them. He was saying now, in a toadying voice, 'I'm so sorry about that, Mr Xenakis. Our staff have the strictest instructions not to make conversation with any of the guests, but Miss Mancini is new—'

Andreas bit out coldly, 'I spoke to her, actually.' Then he realised something and looked at the man, 'You say her name is Mancini?'

'Yes,' her boss said absently, and then he smiled even more slimily, saying sotto voce to Andreas, 'Of course her looks are a bonus—she could be a model, if you ask me. I don't know what she's doing waitressing, but I can't complain. I've never had so many requests for her phone number.'

Andreas desisted from informing the man that she was waitressing because she was persona non grata in polite society across Europe. He pushed aside the fact of her name-change and felt something like rage building inside him. He fixed the manager with a look that would have felled many. 'I presume you do not give out her number, of course?'

The man immediately went puce and blustered, 'Well, I… Well, of course not, Mr Xenakis. I don't know what kind of a service you think I'm running here, but I can assure you—'

'Don't worry,' Andreas sliced in cuttingly. 'I will be assured once I've checked out your company thoroughly.'

With that he turned and walked in the direction he'd last seen Siena moving. He had something much more urgent to take his attention now: making sure Siena DePiero didn't disappear into thin air.

A couple of hours later Siena was walking quickly through the moonlit streets around Mayfair. She still hadn't fully processed that she'd seen Andreas Xenakis, here in London, where she'd come to hide and move on with her life. To her everlasting relief she hadn't bumped into him again, but she'd been horribly aware of his tall form and had endeavoured to make sure she stayed on the far side of the room at all times.

Now, as she walked and felt the blisters on her heels, she cursed herself for letting Andreas get to her like that. Yes, they had history. She winced inwardly. It wasn't a pretty history. She didn't want to be reminded of the blazing look of anger and betrayal on his face when she'd stood beside her father five years ago, holding her dress up over her chest, and agreed shakily: 'Yes, he attacked me, Papa. I couldn't stop him

Andreas had cut in angrily, his Greek accent thick. 'That's a downright lie. She was begging me—'

Her father had held up an imperious hand and cut Andreas off. He'd turned to face Siena and she'd looked up at him, terrified of his power to inflict punishment if he chose to believe Andreas.

He'd said quietly, 'He's lying, isn't he? You would never let a man like this touch you, would you? Because you know you're infinitely better than him.'

Struggling to hide her disgust and hatred, Siena had given the only answer she could. She'd nodded and felt sick. 'Yes, he's lying. I would never allow someone like him to touch me.'

Thinking of the unpalatable past made Siena feel trembly and light-headed. She didn't want to contemplate the very uncomfortable fact that he still had such a profound effect on her.

Once again, though, she marvelled at how far removed he was from the man who had once presided over servers in a hotel. In all honesty she was surprised he'd recognised her at all from his lofty position. She knew how easy it was to see only the hand that served you, not the person. Siena recalled her father's blistering anger when he'd berated her once for aiding a waiter who'd dropped a tray at one of his legendary parties. He'd hauled her into his offce and gripped her arm painfully.

'Don't you know who we are? You step over people like him. You do not stop to help them.'

Siena had bitten back the angry retort on her lips. Just like you stepped over your own illegitimate son in the street? Our own brother? That audacious comment alone would have merited her sister a severe beating. That was his preferred twisted form of torture—if Siena provoked him, Serena would be punished.

Siena saw the bus stop in the distance and breathed a sigh of relief. Tomorrow she would have forgotten all about bad memories and running into Andreas Xenakis. Her insides lurched, mocking her assertion. For one second earlier, when she'd first seen Andreas, she'd imagined she was dreaming.

She'd never forgotten what she had done to that man by falsely accusing him. More often than she cared to admit she remembered that night and how, with just a look and a touch, he'd made her lose any sense of rationality and sanity. On some level, when she'd read about his stellar success in the newspapers, she'd been relieved; to see him flourishing far better than she would have ever expected assuaged some tiny part of the guilt she felt.

Resolutely Siena pushed down her incendiary thoughts. Familiar nagging anxiety took their place. She wondered now, as she approached the bus stop, if the two jobs she had would be enough to help her sister. But she knew with a leaden feeling that nothing short of a miracle could do that.

Siena had just arrived under the shelter of the bus stop when she noticed a sleek silver sports car pulling up alongside where she stood. Even before the electric window lowered on the passenger side Siena's heart-rate had increased.

The starkly handsome features of Andreas Xenakis looked out and Siena backed away instinctively. His presence was evidence that he wasn't about to let her off so easily. He wanted to torture her and make the most out of her changed circumstances. In a second he'd jumped out of the car and was lightly holding her elbow.

'Please.' He smiled urbanely, as if stopping to pick up women at bus stops resplendent in a tuxedo was entirely normal for him. 'Let me give you a lift.'

Siena was so tense she felt as if she might crack in two. Very aware of her ill-fitting thin denim jacket in the biting early spring breeze, and the fatigue that made her bones ache, she bit out, 'I'm fine, thank you. The bus will be along shortly.'

Andreas shook his head. He had that same incredulous expression that he'd worn when she'd spoken to him before. 'Are your co-workers aware you could probably have conversed with every foreign guest in that room in their own tongue?'

Hurt at this back-handed compliment, and his all too banal but accurate assessment of her misery Siena pulled her arm free. She acted instinctively, wanting to say something to prick his pride and hopefully push him away. 'I said I'm fine, thank you very much. I'm sure you have better things to do than follow me around like some besotted puppy dog.'

Forgiven but not Forgotten

As I appear to be the first to review this book all I can say is this book is perfection personified. I RELY on all of your reviews to help me spend my reading $ wisely. Be prepared to put something in the crock pot cause you are going to need this or you and your family will not eat once you start reading this book. My hope is that authors reads our reviews so we can convey our appreciation for the hours of joy and escape of our regular duties they provide. I am jealous that you all will be reading this book while I am cooking, cleaning, working and sleep deprived as it is 5:14 am here and my day is just beginning; trust me, the book was worth it. Enjoy and savor every chapter.

I agree with most of the readers about this book- Romance is alive and doing well in this wonderful book. I'm not going to tell you the story because others already have but I want to say that I loved, loved, loved this book. Lately I've been reading books with little or no conflict- really how much sex can you have before it's a bore! This book has a wonderful story of misunderstanding and love. Two characters that could not live without each other, just wonderful. Every night I would read a little because I just didn't want to reach the end, I wanted this book to go on forever- alas it ended too soon. I gave this book five stars and recommend it highly.

Hot and angsty read

It's been a while since I read an Abby Green and I have several waiting on my overflowing TBR but I picked this one up when it was mentioned as having a virgin in a newspaper interview and was drawn in immediately. I love the world she creates and I love that we catch glimpses of people from her other books and in this case an upcoming book.

I loved the heroine Siena who is down but not out, rebuilding her life and that of her sister after an immensely privileged but abusive childhood. Five years ago Andreas was collateral damage, a young man Siena was so drawn to, she forget everything for those few moments until her father arrived.

Now Andreas is back for revenge for the way his life was ruined by her father in retaliation for touching his daughter, supposedly against her will. He has never forgotten her.

Siena too has never forgotten Andreas, the burden of guilt she feels for lying about what happened never resolved.

I loved how these two interacted. The sizzling chemistry between them is off the charts but there is more to it than just the smexy. This was a very emotional read and managed to get me all choked up so I gave it the five stars.

Dear Reader,
I've always found it sexy when a hero and heroine can not only match wits, but also match swords.

A common theme in the Chinese adventure stories is the idea of the vigilante hero, a hero guided by honor and chivalry. But how much fun would it be to have the heroine in that role? And the hero would be, of course, the thief-catcher intent on capturing her.

Often people ask me, where do I get my ideas? For this book, the origin was a famous poem by the poet Du Fu of the Tang Dynasty titled, "Observing the Sword Dance of a Disciple of Madam Gongsun." The poem starts with the description of a mesmerizing sword dance, then moves into a nostalgic look at how much has changed in fifty years like "the turn of a page". The sword dance ultimately becomes a symbol of the end of a golden age.

A final historical note: Wudang Mountain which is mentioned in the book is an actual location. In the Tang Dynasty, the mountain was already established as a center of Taoism. A Taoist master, Lu Dong Bin, known as the Sword Immortal, was also a famous figure of the Tang Dynasty. With these elements in mind, I took the liberty of associating my heroine's sword training as well as her Taoist upbringing with Wudang. 

I hope you enjoy the adventures of my sword dancer and thief-catcher as they chase their way across the cities and rivers of Tang Dynasty China. There's no better place to fight and fall in love, in my humble opinion.

Historical Romance That Offers Action, Intrigue, and Forbidden Romance all in one

When I get the opportunity to read historical romance with a setting that is not the typical, I am always intrigued. China is a magical place with scope for a good, hearty story. I have read one other book by this author in the same historical time period and it was a wonderful blend of history, adventure and romance so I was eager to give this one a try.

The story begins when a thief-taker, Han, pursues his hunch that the thieves to a shipment of jade are traveling with a performing troupe. He is mesmerized when the beautiful sword dancer does her routine not just with grace, but expertise showing she is familiar with wielding the sword as a weapon. At the end of her performance, a group of impatient bounty hunters rush in to take captive the troupe. The sword dancer runs and he goes with his gut feeling and pursues her. Han is led on a merry chase that takes him through, around, over and under the small village until he catches her when another thief-taker blocks her path. He is awed by the grace and athleticism that allows her to scale walls, balance on roofs and dart through the narrow alleys like her dance. During the pursuit, she surprised him by not letting him fall off a roof when she could have used it as the opportunity to get far away. This begins his suspicion that she is no ordinary thief.

Li Feng can't believe her luck when the best thief-taker in the province captures her and brings her to a holding cell with plans to take her back to the magistrate for the jade theft- a theft that she participated in as an act to weaken the warlord it was destined for and not an act out of greed. She knew it was a mistake to get caught up in that cause when she had her own personal quest going on. With little effort, she escapes the jail and continues her pursuit to find her mother who was taken from her leaving her an orphan. Her only clue is the piece of jade her mother gave her before disappearing with a pack of armed men.

Han has never trailed someone who roused his curiosity as much as Li Feng. She acts like no normal thief or criminal he has seen. She doesn't show a hint that she was guilty of a crime- no trying to get rid of her loot, no greedy behavior, just a trail of visits to jade sellers and craftsman. He captures her again and she escapes him again. Each time, he learns a little more about his fugitive. She is trained in the warrior arts and she pursues her own quest. He used to think justice is justice- black and white, but now he begins to wonder. Li Feng is not without honor even it if is not the same as his own. Bigger things are afoot involving powerful figures in the shadows who orchestrated the event of the theft and signs of corruption that are going on. He doesn't want the small fish; he wants to bring down the whole rotten group and the sword dancer is his only lead.

Li Feng grows accustomed to the tenacious thief-taker finding her and eventually they strike a truce to start working together. She knows eventually she must get away from him because they are fundamentally different, but in the meantime she allows the attraction between them knowing it will tear out a piece of her heart when they part. Toward the end, the trail of clues leads her to unexpected truths that make her choices all the more difficult though duty to family allows for there to only be one real choice in the end. The same can be said for Han because his principles lead him to the point where he must choose justice or Li Feng now that he knows her secrets.

The plot was riveting from the first page. I loved the action sequences of Li Feng's flight to escape and Han's pursuit to capture. The mystery of the past that Li Feng cannot remember, but pieces together as she pursues one clue after another was full of intrigue and then the constant feeling of danger from people in the present worked well against the quiet moments when Li Feng and Han start up a rather unique love affair. Both characters are well aware that the feelings they have can lead to nowhere since their lives and actions have placed them on opposite sides of the law. I think that made their stolen moments of tenderness and togetherness all the more richer. They dance around each other for a while, but finally give in to their mutual passion. These two were so perfect for each other and together so I was vested to find out how the author would pull off a happily ever after for them with one being a criminal and one set to uphold the law. As the book pushed forward, it got even more and more hopeless, but that's what kept me reading.

Backdrop was descriptive and felt authentic. Social norms, clothing, class system, description of the scenes were all well done, but they were baked into the story in such a way that it was just there running along with the plot and not taking it over.

This was such a satisfying read and I recommend it to those who enjoy historical romance with some spice, some taunt action and an exotic setting.

Flying through the air with life!

The Sword Dancer is written with grace and beauty. No other author has the keen ability to make words works of art. I commend Jeannie for her skill and thank her for sharing her skill with the world.

The Sword Dancer is a book that is fun and keeps you interested until the last page. Treat yourself to this book. You deserve it. You truly do.

If you have not read "Butterfly Swords", "The Dragon and the Pearl", and "My Fair Concubine", do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of each today.

As I stated previously, no author writes as if it was an old masterpiece. Jeannie Lin's work are works of art. True art that should be savored and enjoyed and shared.

It's time for you to savor and enjoy.

Batman Versus Catwoman

If you've never tried one of Jeannie Lin's Tang Dynasty China historical romances (and if you haven't, boy, are you missing out!), you are in luck because this standalone novel is arguably one of her two most accessible to readers unfamiliar with Chinese culture and history, the other being My Fair Concubine whose basic premise greatly resembles that of My Fair Lady. The premise of The Sword Dancer on the other hand resembles one seen with some frequency in comic books (and their TV and movie adaptations) about costumed vigilantes and the costumed villains they fight: a hero and a villain being attracted to each other despite operating on opposite sides of the law. The most famous of these relationships (and the most long lived, not to mention the most convoluted) is that between Batman and Catwoman, which dates to 1940.

Sword Dancer Li Feng is a good deal more than just that. First of all, she has been raised/trained by a master swordsman and has adopted sword dancing mostly as a disguise and as a way to earn a living while she pursues her real goal. Second, without really thinking it through, she managed to let herself get involved in a revolution and a heist that has attracted the law's unwelcome attention to her. But her real goal is to find out what happened to her mother during a tragedy half remembered as a very small child, why it happened, and just exactly who she really is.

Among professional thief catchers (bounty hunters) Zheng Hao Han is something of an anomaly and not merely because he is very good at it. As the eldest son of a disgraced former magistrate, he once studied the law in order to follow in his father's footsteps, but now he follows a darker path in his quest for justice.

Funny thing is that they are BOTH seeking to uncover truths and right wrongs, but their methods are utterly incompatible...

so it is just too bad that they are so darn attracted to each other. As Thirst for Revenge leads Unrelenting Pursuit a merry chase, accommodations are reached in order to seek the truth together and spend SOME time with one another, but any future together is impossible, right?

Then again this is a Jeannie Lin novel where the impossible CAN happen,...

but only after Ms. Lin has first rendered it as utterly and completely impossible as she can without sabotaging her thread-the-multiple-needles ending.

Note: I entered a contest where we were given the title and the basic premise and asked to guess what the cover illustration would look like. My guess was "the heroine... dancing... with a sword...."

For some odd reason I didn't win.

Good book for kids

Engaging illustrations. The story is appropriate for children discussing how one person's strength (Sophie's spelling test grade) does not make another person less strong in their area of strength (Sammy and building things.) My children got the main message of life as a "buffet (lots for all)" as opposed to life as a "pie (more for one is less for another.)
The principle of Habit 4 is "Think Win-Win". I expected the story to build more on the idea of Habit 4 - about how to want the good for all parties involved in a situation and how to negotiate together for the good of all parties (for example Goob and Jumper deciding on a plan for the afternoon.) (That expectation might have been a bit ambitious for a short children's book.)
