He explores the exceptional position that soldiers occupy in relation to violence--not only trained to fight and kill, but placed deliberately in harm's way and offered up to die. The death and destruction of war happen to soldiers on purpose. MacLeish interweaves gripping narrative with critical theory and anthropological analysis to vividly describe this unique condition of vulnerability. Along the way, he sheds new light on the dynamics of military family life, stereotypes of veterans, what it means for civilians to say "thank you" to soldiers, and other questions about the sometimes ordinary, sometimes agonizing labor of making war.

Disillusioned

And glad of it. Being disillusioned, having our point of view changed, is underrated.This window into the world of those we designate to make war for us realigned my view and made me face this aspect of our nation's life--something much easier to push out of conscious thought. I have two nephews in the military--both very young--and now I need to know the best ways to be a source of support for them. The most wrenching part, for me, was the realization of the altered point of view of the soldier, shaped by the requirements of the job. A close second was the exposition of the burden imposed by thanking or "honoring" these men. It made me realize that much of what we do in this realm is for us and our comfort, not theirs.
If you are a civilian, this book will advance your understanding of the soldier and his/her work.

More academic than I expected

There's plenty of interesting and enlightening detail about what life is like for soldiers who are waiting to be deployed, soldiers who have returned from deployment, and their families. But there's also a lot of academic jargon. Random example: "This agitated and sprawling 'nervousness' is central to the blatant visibility and hyperrational excess of 'the system,' proliferating boundaries, thresholds, divisions between inside and outside, and productive effects at every scale and level, drawing lines that bind and divide between a thing and its observer, between an institution and its servant." I was hoping for something like Barbara Ehrenreich's books, but it's a good deal less readable than those.

Very informative

Let's you really know just how hard it is for our guys to go over to Iraq and Afghanistan and other countries to defend our country, and then...come home to face other problems. They need our support, financial and otherwise. My husband spent 20 years in the Army. He went away three times to defend our country. I understand what it's like to be left at home to be everything to your children, to always keep a positive attitude...to get up and make every day new day and take each day as it comes.
