Edward Daly: 16Lives, by Helen Litton

Born in Limerick in 1891, John Edward or 'Ned' Daly was the only son in a family of nine. Ned's father, Edward, an ardent Fenian, died before his son was born, but Ned's Uncle John, also a radical Fenian, was a formative influence. John Daly was prepared to use physical force to win Ireland's freedom and was imprisoned for twelve years for his activities. Ned's sister Kathleen married Tom Clarke, a key figure of the Easter Rising. Nationalism was in the Daly blood.

Yet young Ned was seen as frivolous and unmotivated, interested only in his appearance and his social life. How Edward Daly became a professional Volunteer soldier, dedicated to freeing his country from foreign rule, forms the core of this biography.

Drawing on family memories and archives, Edward Daly's grandniece Helen Litton uncovers the untold story of Edward Daly, providing an insight into one of the more enigmatic figures of the Easter Rising.

As commandant during the Rising, Ned controlled the Four Courts area. On 4 May 1916, Commandant Edward Daly was executed for his part in the Easter Rising. Ned was twenty-five years old. His body was consigned to a mass grave.

About the Author
Edward Daly (1891-1916): Born in Limerick on 28 February 1891 he was the only boy amongst nine sisters. Daly's family had a history of republican activity; his father had taken part in the Rising of 1867. He knew Tom Clarke through his uncle John Daly who shared a cell with the "dynamiter"- they were brought closer through Tom's marriage to his sister Kathleen Daly. The Christian Brothers who considered him "not by any means a brilliant pupil" educated him. He tried working in Glasgow as a bakers apprentice but returned to Limerick to work as a clerk in a timber yard. In 1912 he moved to Dublin and worked for the chemist wholesalers on Westmoreland Street, May Roberts. He was one of the first to join the Volunteers and helped to organize for the Rossa funeral in 1915. In the weeks leading up to the Rising, at Sean MacDiarmada's request he worked full time for the Volunteers. Ned was commander of the Volunteers First Battalion who were based around the Four Courts area of Dublin during 1916. Daly raided the Bridewell Barracks and found twenty-four members of the Dublin Metropolitan Police hidden in their cells. He also raided the Linenhall Barracks, a building which housed the Army Pay Corps, which his men then set on fire in order to disrupt the system. Ned Daly and his men fought pitched battles with the British around the narrow streets of Smithfield and the Market area of Dublin. After the eventual surrender of the 1st Battalion an unfortunate incident occurred when British soldiers apparently lost control of themselves. They battered their way into houses along North King Street and shot male residents indiscriminately. The discovery of a shallow grave after the Rising that contained two civilian bodies later led to an investigation, which served to help the decisive shift of public opinion against the British forces. On the other hand Daly had captured Col J.P. Brereton and held him in the Four Courts. Later Brereton commended the garrison for their behavior and said "he was treated with kindness by the insurgents." Ned Daly was taken to Kilmainham Gaol and took the dubious honour of being the youngest 1916 leader to be executed, on the 4 of May 1916.

Fantastic read
By DelicateZaphira
Fantastic book. Helen Litton does a wonderful job here - strikes a good balance between objective historian and personal family connection. I'm deliberately starting the 16 lives series with the lesser known leaders. I'm glad I started with Ned Daly, the youngest of the executed. I found out so much I didnt know about him and the prominant Daly family. Read this in a day and a half, lots of content but not too heavy. Highly recommended

Interesting account of the life of Ned Daly. I heard some of the details from my grandmother who was his sister. (Eileen Daly)
Tom Clarke's wife was Kathleen Daly, who was also my grandmother's sister.

*Starred Review* This deliciously subversive piece of metafiction skewers—with a sharp wit and a sharper pencil—the earnest, purposeful literature so popular in the middle of the last century. The fun begins with a facsimile of something akin to an antique Little Golden Book, Birthday Bunny, complete with worn cover, yellowed pages, and wholesome message. But the book has been “improved” in story and pictures by a child named Alex wielding his trusty no. 2. The cover, retitled Battle Bunny, now features rockets, planes, bombs, and a general promise of mayhem. And Alex keeps that promise, transforming the insipid story of a sad bunny being cheered by his friends on his birthday into a raucous adventure wherein an evil bunny unleashes a tornado of destruction on the unsuspecting forest until the president is forced to call in one Agent Alex to save the day. Alex’s “edits,” including a complete reworking of the text and plenty of pictorial embellishments, are soaked in testosterone. The animals of the forest become luchadores and ninja warriors; Air Force One and a few presidents (Obama and Lincoln) make appearances; and just about everything explodes. In the end, Alex is victorious, Battle Bunny is vanquished, and the world is safe. At least until Alex and his pencil ride again . . . Grades K-5. --Thom Barthelmess

Wickedly funny!
By Peggy Tibbetts
At first glance it appears as though some mischievous child has scribbled all over this book. Upon closer inspection the extraordinary plot unfolds. From the inscription we learn that GranGran, apparently thinking Alex is still a toddler, has presented her “little birthday bunny” with this sappy picture book, “Birthday Bunny” on his “special day.” In response Alex, who is clearly not a toddler and maybe needs to lay off the video games, has taken a No. 2 pencil in hand and transformed the whiny little bunny into a ferocious farting rabbit with super powers. In Alex’s re-write it takes an army of bomb-throwing forest zombies, two presidents, and the real birthday boy to stop this psycho bunny from carrying out his Evil Plan, which involves a rocket.

Sciesczka’s and Barnett’s writing and Myer’s illustrations magically combine to create a rare comedic masterpiece that works on so many levels it’s impossible to describe them all. You must read it for yourself and savor the nuggets of nuance. “Battle Bunny” is wickedly funny.

Alternating first-person accounts tell a disquieting tale. Annabel Hayer leads a solitary life with her cat, her only activity outside work being to help out her widowed, housebound mum. Meanwhile, virtually friendless Colin Friedland combines his obsessions with sex and death with a growing interest in neurolinguistic programming (NLP), forging an all-consuming avocation. Annabel also is a crack police analyst who spots an alarming increase in the number of bodies found in their homes in various states of decomposition in the town of Briarstone, causing police to start looking for connections between the recently dead (but not murdered) and the local newspaper to launch a Love Your Neighbour campaign, urging residents to check on those living nearby. Inevitably, the two narrators connect after an unexpected event plunges Annabel into a depressed state, and Colin’s methods—and his keen interest in putrefaction—are spelled out in greater detail. Occasionally stomach-turning, as in the describing of the decay of human remains, this unusual thriller is, overall, a compelling story of obsession descending into madness. --Michele Leber

But Annabel is shocked when she discovers her neighbor's decomposing body in the house next door, and she is appalled to think that no one, including herself, noticed the woman's absence. Annabel sets out to investigate, despite her colleagues' lack of interest, and discovers that such cases are frighteningly common in her hometown.

Daylight is fading. All is quiet. Mugs and plates are still in the sink, a pile of ironing is waiting and the washing machine stopped long ago but the door is still closed. Is this the silent house of one of Creepy Colin's victims? No! It's mine, with everything having to wait until I'd finished Elizabeth's latest book. Don't let the title put you off. Truly gripping, utterly absorbing and a fascinating glimpse into the minds of her disturbed fantasist, some lonely people and including the workings of an analysts' office, not to mention a selfless act of heroism. Elizabeth has captured many voices in this novel, all of which are credible. Any one of her people could be standing in front of you in the supermarket queue and you'd never know. This is her best work yet. Must do my housework before she writes her next masterpiece!

K-Gr 2–The saga continues with larger-than-life food, but this time the adventure is out of this world–literally. Grandpa shows the kids the newspaper headline: astronauts have landed on Mars. A television reporter comes on saying that the astronauts discovered a “thick, glutinous substance” on the ground and falling from the sky. He suggests that it could be pie filling. The kids fantasize about going to Mars and having Martian pie. Grandpa falls asleep in front of the television and begins to dream. He is on Mars, where there are pies everywhere and raining from the sky. The pie in the sky situation, though, is a little out of hand, and the Martians had been waiting for someone to help. They decide that the best solution is to catch the treats as they fall and start a business, selling the pies all over Earth. Grandpa awakes, and both the news reporter and the newspaper confirm that there were, in fact, no pies on Mars, but it's still fun to dream. Although this third book in the series has a new illustrator,  the feel from the previous books is not lost. The pen-and-ink illustrations are filled with action; color is only used while Grandpa is dreaming, which adds to the fantasy of it all. A great purchase for libraries where the series is popular.–Emily E. Lazio, The Smithtown Special Library District, NYα(c) Copyright 2013. After astronauts land on Mars and report “a thick, glutinous substance” falling onto the planet’s surface, Kate, Henry, and Grandpa hear a news reporter speculate about pie filling raining down from the skies. Nodding off, Grandpa dreams that he and the other astronauts have landed on the pie-strewn red planet, where friendly Martians give them a tour and dinner before asking for advice on solving the excess-pie problem. The next morning’s newspaper features a photo of the astronauts, including one closely resembling Grandpa. This once-in-a-blue-moon sequel to Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (1978) and Pickles to Pittsburgh (1997) brings back the same main characters and uses the same visual technique, illustrating the real-world setting and conversations in black ink drawings, while brightening the drawings with watercolors for the story within a story, here the dream sequence on Mars. Droll, inventive, and mildly amusing, this is a must-read picture book for fans of the series. Grades K-3. --Carolyn Phelan

More edible precipitation—falling not on the town of Chewandswallow this time, but Mars, and timed to whet appetites for the second iteration of the film version of the franchise.

Grandpa falls asleep in his chair following news reports of astronauts greeted by a shower of goo on the red planet and dreams of being there himself, helping the green-skinned residents cope with barrages of falling pies. They’re all the fruit-filled sort in Monés’ illustrations, which are closely modeled on Ron Barrett’s work in the previous two Cloudy episodes and sandwich color views of Martian cities and citizens between earthly scenes in crosshatched black and white. The story goes on a little too long and ends in a muddle—the goo turns out to be ordinary Martian rain, but the pie Grandpa serves to his grandchildren in the final scene comes from an interplanetary shipping carton that is somehow translated into reality from his dream solution of exporting fallen pies to Earth. Nevertheless, the showers of crust and fruit filling look delectable, and the illustrator tucks in plenty of amusing side business and sight gags.

An extra helping for those readers who haven’t had their fill of the general premise. (Picture book. 6-8)

  (Kirkus Reviews)

A full 35 years after Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (and 16 years after its sequel, Pickles to Pittsburgh), Barrett offers a third food-filled romp starring Kate, Henry, and Grandpa. Monés nicely approximates Ron Barrett’s work on the previous books, as news reports about the possibility of pie filling on the surface of Mars pique the children’s interest. B&w pen-and-ink artwork shifts to color as Grandpa dreams of a trip to the red planet, where the locals have more pie than they can handle. Though the story meanders, Monés’s visions of a dessert-laden Mars should whet readers’ appetites. Ages 4–8. (Aug.) (Publishers Weekly)

(Booklist)

Interesting, but not nearly as exciting as the first book in this series
By Sunshine on a Rainy Day
This is book number three in the Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs Series. Astronauts have landed on Mars and are speculating about what the thick substance falling from the sky could be. The reporter guesses it could be pie. Grandpa goes to sleep and dreams that he goes to Mars and talks to the martians about their pie problem. The solution is to capture the pies in nets, box them up and sell them around the world. Later, when Grandpa wakes up, you are left wondering if it was a dream or real.

The illustrations are colorful and interesting.

This story did not have the same interest level as the first two in this series. The kids are hardly involved. Instead, Grandpa is dreaming and telling the story. Rather than seeing a lot of whole pies, we see lots of goo raining down and sitting on things. Although children may be interested in the story line, this one does not hold the same excitement as the first in the series or even the second. I think leaving the children out of most of the story made a big difference.

Best than 2, but not as good as one
By Jillian
This was is much better writing than the second book. It's more in alignment with the first book. Very cute, plus who doesn't like the idea of aliens and pies?

Amazon.com Review
Sewing garments and home-decor items does not have to be mutually exclusive; there are certain skills and fields of knowledge peculiar to each, and there are some areas of overlap. Remarkably, this extremely comprehensive, heavily illustrated volume manages to do justice to both apparel and decor techniques, from the rudiments of the sewing machine and other essential equipment to an exploration of fabric types, from taking proper measurements (of people as well as of windows and tables) to learning all the basics as well as more advanced skills for many kinds of sewing: women's wear, including tailoring; activewear, including swimsuits; babies' and children's clothes; window treatments, pillows, bed coverings, and table linens. The section on making custom alterations to store-bought patterns is especially helpful for garment sewers perpetually frustrated in trying to achieve a perfect fit. Novices will find this a very useful reference in understanding the often-cryptic instructions of commercial patterns; experienced sewers should have this guide on hand to help them achieve thoroughly professional results. --Amy Handy

This an older Singer Sewing book renamed.....
By Fanshawe
If you purchase this book, be aware that is was published under another name, "Singer Sewing Step by Step" in the early 90's. I'm glad that I checked it out of the library before purchasing, because I already own the other book...yes, it has some decent photos, but I would be cautious in recommending this to a beginner, as I was when I purchased the older version. Construction techniques are not thoroughly explained, usually only one or two pages of photos are devoted to any one technique (collars, sleeves, etc.). Personally, I was very frustrated by this. One would be better off using this as a complement to another book, such as the Readers Digest guide to sewing or the Vogue sewing book, both of which are excellent resources but lacking in photo illustrations. The book is a bit dated, too, but if you can get past that, it is not too bad.

Worth owning, but could be better.
By A Customer
I'm a beginning sewer (*very* beginning) and I purchased this book to help me with all the things patterns don't explain. Some sections have been extremely helpful (zippers, hems) and some are disappointing (sleeves, collars.) In general, the big problem is that a technique that needs 5-10 pictures (including the finished product!) has only 2-3 photos of critical steps. Those are useful, but I often find myself struggling to imagine what they're trying to accomplish. I'm not aware of a better illustrated guide, so I'm still glad I purchased this book. As far as I can tell sewing is a lot like writing code -- you just have to screw it up by yourself in order to learn much. Maybe if I ever master one of the trickier things in the book, I'll videotape it and put the video on the web. ;-)

This book is not complete
By A Customer
It is a compilation of excerpts from the other titles in the Singer Sewing Reference Library. Since I have those books, this book just repeated (exact same text & pictures) information that I already have, only, as I said, not as complete, because they're just excerpts. I highly recommend the individual books in the Singer Series, which are much more informative, but I can't recommend this rehash. Also, I feel that the description should mention somewhere that the book is excerpted from other books, because then I would have known not to buy it.

No Angel, by Helen Keeble

Mix the wry humor of Vladimir Tod, the relatability and fun of Ally Carter, and a sinfully hilarious setup, and you have No Angel—an unforgettable spin on angels and demons from the author of Fang Girl.

Rafael Angelos just got handed the greatest gift any teenage boy could ever dream of. Upon arriving at his new boarding school for his senior year, he discovered that he is the only male student there. But Raffi's about to learn that St. Mary's is actually a hub for demons—and that he was summoned to the school by someone expecting him to save the day. Raffi knows he's no angel—but it's pretty hard to deny that there's some higher plan at work when he wakes up one morning to discover he's sprouted wings and a glowing circle around his head. . . .

Review
“Likable voice, well-drawn characters and dead-on humor.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Keeble provides readers with snarky characters; a quick-moving, entertaining plot; and a fascinating setting.” (School Library Journal)

From the Back Cover

Being the only guy at an all-girls school isn't exactly a dream come true . . .

That's right. I, Rafael Angelos, am the sole member of the male sex at St. Mary's School. Prepare yourselves, ladies. But while the girls here are ridiculously hot, they also take popularity, cliques, and bullying to new levels of crazy. So I've decided it's my job to step in. Protect the meek, smite the wicked, and win the heart of a beautiful victim while I'm at it.

The whole "guardian angel" thing is getting a little out of hand, though. I really didn't sign up for a weird, glowing circle around my head—or a pair of wings. And I'm starting to worry that there's a reason so many of the girls act like they're possessed by demons. . . .

About the Author

Helen Keeble is not, and never has been, an angel. She has, however, been a teenager. She grew up partly in America and partly in England, which has left her with an unidentifiable accent and a fondness for peanut butter crackers washed down with a nice cup of tea. She now lives in West Sussex, England, with her husband, daughter, two cats, and a variable number of fish.

Cute Boy Who is an Angel? Sign me up!
By Lisa FicTalk
I haven't really read very much paranormal YA books recently, but this one was such a treat for me. While it wasn't without its flaws, I did find it to be an enjoyable and seriously funny novel.

This was my first Helen Keeble book, and I was very excited to dive into it after reading the summary and some reviews of her first story, Fang Girl. Apparently many readers loved her brand of humor, and I wanted to experience it for myself, as well.

No Angel is told from the point of view of its main character and reluctant hero, Rafeal "Raffi" Angelos. Rafael is attending St Mary's school for Girls and Boys, but funny enough, there are no other boys, just Raffi. He is the first boy to be accepted into the newly co-ed school, all the other male applicants failed to meet the headmistress's requirements.

One guy in a school with all girls? Score, right? Well, not exactly. Even though Raf thinks there's nothing better than having all these skirt-wearing females flocking around him like an all you can eat open buffet, it can be a bit overwhelming for the guy.

Just when he thinks he's found "The One," he finds out that she's the daughter of the headmistress, which makes her totally off limits, even though she is Raf's dream come true. But besides that, Faith-The girl, is also being shunned by the other girls in school and Raf doesn't want to be a part of that drama, even if he can't help but be drawn to her.

That's not all, folks! The headmistress has decided that the whackiest girl I'm school will be Raffi's personal tour guide until he becomes accustomed to life on campus. That girl being Krystal Moon-the one who had summoned Raffi to help the school get rid of the evil lurking in its hallways.

Raffi believes none of it, however. Until he does the unthinkable-a miracle- and wakes up the next morning to see what? A freaking halo surrounding his head like a huge spotlight. I thought it was seriously funny the lengths he went to in order to go unnoticed.

And lastly, we're also introduced to Michaela, the exotic Italian chick that Raffi just about falls out of his seat every time he sees her. Not to mention the cleavage shots she manages to flash the guy with. I actually laughed quite a bit at these moments because Raffi is such a teenage boy in these scenes.

While I did like a lot of things in this book, there were a few things that I didn't. The mythology on angels and demons were a little bit off. But I felt that while they weren't explained the best, I was able to overlook it due to fact that it was such a cute and fluffy story that wasn't bogged down with unnecessary angst and overdone love triangles that drive me mad.

In the end, I would recommend this book to those who want a cute, funny and light book to sink their teeth into. The writing was great, the dialogue was witty and at times laugh out loud good, and Raffi was hilarious and adorable. He's not overly confident or arrogant, he was just as normal a teenage boy as he could be... And a bit of a goof.

Highly fun and entertaing take on angel books
By My Friends Are Fiction
My Thoughts:
No Angel is not a book that I would typically pick up and read because I tend to shy away from books that attempt humor. I was sent a review copy randomly by Harper Teen and was actually pleasantly surprised with how enjoyable this was. Keeble’s writing is not overly serious; this book is pure fun and was a quick and easy read.

I really enjoyed that No Angel moved at a fast pace and was told from a male point of view. I felt Keeble did a great job in giving Raffi a distinctive and masculine tone. He was incredibly likeable and some of his lines were very, very funny. My favorite parts were his development of his angel gifts. I felt the writing was very descriptive and did a wonderful job with the physical comedy of the situations Raffi found himself in.

The secondary cast was written well though I was never overly connected to them or really understood all their motivations. Some of the characters felt disjointed in their development, though it didn’t really detract from my overall enjoyment.

Though aspects were done beautifully my biggest issue with the main story arc was its predictability. The twists were never surprising to me and I never felt overly engaged in the outcome.

Final Thoughts:
No Angel was an entertaining book that was a bit of a fluff read. I would read another Helen Keeble book without a doubt because her writing was easy, fun and a humorous take on paranormal young adult fiction.

A bond of love unites a family throughout generations in this companion to the beloved and bestselling classic The Keeping Quilt.

As a young Russian Jewish girl in the early 1900s, Anna and her family lived in fear of the Czar’s soldiers. The family lived a hard life and had few possessions—their treasure was a beautiful china tea set. A wedding gift to Anna’s parents, the tea set came with a wish that “Anyone who drinks from this will have blessings from God. They will never know a day of hunger. Their lives will always have flavor. They will know love and joy and they will never be poor.”

When Anna’s family leaves Russia for America, they bring the tea set and its blessings. A source of heritage and security, the tea set helps Anna’s family make friends and find better lives in America. A cup from the tea set—The Blessing Cup—became an anchor of family history, and it remains a symbol of lasting love more than a century later.

This tender tribute to the importance of loving lineage is a prequel and companion to the perennial bestseller The Keeping Quilt and is told and illustrated with authenticity and tremendous heart.

The entrancing charcoal illustrations soften the bittersweet story and will delight young readers as they follow the brightly colored “Blessing Cup” through pages of black and white. Polacco tells an autobiographical story, tracing the origins of a special teacup from the hands of her great-grandmother in Russia to the possession of her own children today. In telling the story of the cup, the author touches on the plight of Jewish people in Russia during the early 1900s, bringing to light the terror of the pogroms as seen through the eyes of Polacco's great-grandmother as a girl. This prequel to The Keeping Quilt (1988) recounts the story of great-grandmother Anna’s childhood exodus from czarist Russia to America. The family brings along a precious tea set (“Anyone who drinks from it has a blessing from God”), hoping it will bring them good luck. When Papa falls ill from cold and exhaustion, a kindly doctor takes them in, nursing Papa back to health and eventually buying the whole family passage to America. In gratitude, they give him the tea set, keeping only one “blessing cup” for themselves. Polacco is a master storyteller, and this heartwarming tale of hardship and the importance of family does not disappoint. The charcoal illustrations are accented with splashes of vibrant color that allow readers to follow the tea set and Anna’s babushka along the journey. An afterword explains how the real cup broke in half during the 1989 California earthquake, enabling Polacco to pass along a part of this heirloom to both of her children. This tale stands alone, but fans will cherish this addition to the Polacco canon. Grades 1-3. --Kay Weisman

Review
THE BLESSING CUP [STARRED REVIEW!]

Polacco has a gift for turning her own family stories into picture books that can touch the hearts of all.
The Keeping Quilt is now 25 years old. In this brand-new companion, Polacco turns to her great-grandmother Anna’s story of how she came to America. The pictures, vibrant and brilliantly suggestive of movement, are mostly black-and-white, shaded with her signature use of color to highlight certain details. Devotees of The Keeping Quilt will recognize Anna’s babushka, which became the border of the quilt, on the young Anna when the czar’s soldiers come to their Russian town to burn the temple and expel all the Jews. The family packs up its most precious possessions, including her papa’s sewing machine and the beautiful china teapot and cups that were a wedding present. Even as they travel, they continue the ritual of drinking from the cups for God’s blessing, breaking bread so they will never know hunger and using salt so that their lives will have flavor. When Anna’s papa’s health breaks down from hauling the cart with all their possessions, a widowed doctor takes the family in and cares for them until, once again, they are forced to leave. In gratitude for the doctor’s care and for his supplying them with passage to America, they leave him the tea set, save for one cup. Polacco closes with the journey of that particular cup to the present day.
History, religious persecution, immigration, and the skeins of faith and love that connect a family are all knit together in this powerful, accessible and deeply affecting story. (Picture book. 6-10) (Kirkus Reviews)

In this prequel to The Keeping Quilt, readers learn how Polacco’s great-grandmother Anna and her parents were forced from their shtetl in Czarist Russia and made their way to America. Among the few treasures the family took with them was a vibrantly painted tea set, a kind of familial talisman (“This tea set is magic. Anyone who drinks from it has a blessing from God,” says Anna’s mother, explaining its lore), which also served as a reminder that they would always be rich in what matters: resilience and love. Only one cup from the tea set made it to their new home, but it played a central role in the family’s traditions and milestones through the generations. Polacco opens her heart to readers as few authors can, inviting them to become intimates in her family’s low and high points. As in The Keeping Quilt, she renders her unabashedly sentimental scenes of immigrant life in exuberant, fluid gray pencil, reserving the splashes and spots of color primarily for the tea set and—in a link to the earlier book—the babushka that will become part of the quilt. Ages 4–8. (Aug.) (Publishers Weekly)

The Keeping Quilt (1988) began with Polacco’s great-grandmother Anna’s arrival in America. In this sort-of prequel, Anna and her family are forced to leave Russia during the pogroms. Though the czar’s soldiers are a dark threat from the first page, the family treasures its cozy home, community, rituals and, especially, a “magic” tea set: “Anyone who drinks from it has a blessing from God. They will never know a day of hunger…They will know love and joy…and they will never be poor!” And so it will be, as long as love is riches enough. Ordered to leave their village, they take little besides a few books and the precious tea set. When Papa falls ill after grueling months on the road, a widowed doctor takes the family in. “Uncle Genya” cares for Papa; Mama cooks. Then, forbidden to house Jews, Uncle Genya sells his most beautiful rug to pay their passage to America, and they leave him the tea set—save one cup, whose later history concludes the tale. The understated telling is beautifully supported and extended in art that harks back to Polacco’s early books. The illustrations are rendered in soft gray pencil. Backgrounds are roughly yet adroitly sketched, while faces and body language are particularly expressive, and panoramic views of the shtetl are lively with detail. A few strategic features draw the eye with brilliant red and blue: small accents such as the tea set and Anna’s headscarf; once, a double-page spread of the village temple in flames. This is family history at its dramatic and iconic best, a well-shaped story and a fine addition to Polacco’s oeuvre. joanna rudge long (The Horn Book)

  From the Article: Family Stories

“Like ‘This Is the Rope,” Patricia Polacco’s book ‘The Blessing Cup’ centers on an item, in this case a cup that links the author to her Russian-Jewish family’s turbulent past. A companion book to ‘The Keeping Quilt’, reprinted this month in a 25th anniversary edition, the story brings to life Polacco’s great-grandmother Anna’s childhood in a shtetl in Russia, beginning ominously as she hides with her mother and sister in an animal shed during a pogrom. Later, Anna’s mother takes down ‘a magnificent china tea set’ – along with Anna’s bright red babushka, one of the few colored objects in Polacco’s detailed pencil drawings – so that the family can celebrate the Sabbath. When the synagogue is burned down and all the Jews in the village are ordered to leave, the set – a wedding present from an aunt in Minsk that came with its own special blessings – is preciously packed for the difficult journey to America. After a welcome respite at the house of a kind doctor the family make their way out of Russia, and by the time they arrive in New York Harbor, only a cup remains, a vivid reminder of ‘the bread, salt, love and richness of being together'...When the original cup breaks in two, Polacco, now its custodian, decides to give one piece each to her two children, reminding us – as do all these books in their own ways – that no matter how fragmented, family history needs to be cherished and passed along in order to survive across the years.”

This companion story to The Keeping Quilt recounts the details of how young
Anna (Polacco’s great-grandmother as a child) and her family are driven from their
home in Czarist Russia. A kind doctor comes to their aid, offering them food,
shelter, and warmth, and he proves their savior once again when, upon receiving
notification from authorities that he cannot house Jews, he purchases tickets for the
entire family to travel to America. As a token of gratitude, they leave the family’s
treasured tea set, save for one cup that remains with the family and is passed down
through the generations (eventually landing with Polacco herself ). Polacco has a
particular flair for turning family stories into universal tales, and the tea set serves
as an effective framing device for describing the family’s journey. The story is suffused
with warmth, and while many of the events described are tragic, there is an
air of familial joy (if also occasional sentimentality) that supersedes the sadness. The
pencil and marker illustrations are largely monochromatic, with selective splashes
of color incorporated into each spread; readers of the earlier story will recognize
Anna’s brightly hued babushka, and the tea set itself is elaborately patterned in blue,
red, and green. This is an accessible tale of the way one family’s faith and devotion
carried them through the most difficult of times, and it will appeal on many levels
to young readers. HM (Bulletin)

Review by Sharon Elswit

Fifteen years ago, The Keeping Quilt won the Sydney Taylor Award for Young Readers. There Polacco shared a story of loving family traditions. It interwove her great-grandmother Anna’s long life after she arrived in America with a quilt created, transformed, and cherished through the generations. That picture book is a staple in second and third grade immigrant studies. Here, in a prequel which moves through to the present, Polacco centers the story of hardships Anna’s family faced in Russia on a china tea set which plays a role in their journey to the new land. The handle-less cups and tall, graceful teapot come with a note celebrating Anna’s mother’s wedding: “This tea set is magic. Anyone who drinks from it has a blessing from God. They will never know a day of hunger. Their lives will always have flavor. They will know love and joy…and they will never be poor.”

This companion volume contains more action than The Keeping Quilt. The blessing of the tea set is tested by Cossack attacks, by the Czar’s edict which forces the Jews of Roynovka from their homes, and by Papa’s collapse from pneumonia as he pulls their cart on the road. The compassionate doctor who takes them in becomes a heart-warming hero in the tea set story. He also notices Anna’s nearsightedness and fits her with a pair of new eyeglasses. Throughout all the harshness the family faces, the red and blue patterned tea set and young Anna’s head scarf stand out in sepia drawn double-page spreads and provide comfort to the family and reader alike. Polacco’s text is suffused with warmth and quotable lyricism. It also provides age-appropriate depictions of life for Jews under the czar in the early 1900s. This picture book, which reminds us of the ties that bind us, is recommended for children 7-10. (Jewish Book Council)

Polacco Shines Again!

Patricia Polacco may not have won any of the "Nobel" prizes in the field of children's literature, but her books always matter and they touch the heart. She is on a one-person crusade to help children appreciate their heritage and to be loving, tolerant, and kind to everyone. She succeeds 100 percent.

A Beautiful Book

This is a beautifully illustrated and written book. I would recommend it as a picture book for mature children and adults too. I have a 5 year old granddaughter but I think she will appreciated it in a couple more years. It is a good story about life struggles, family, and traditions.

“This book gives readers a roadmap to help them gain better understanding of why they eat what they eat.” (-Lilian Cheung, D.Sc., R.D.. co-author, Savor-Mindful Eating, Mindful Life, Director of Health Promotion & Communication, Dept. of Nutrition, Harvard School of Public Health)

Most dieters build elaborate castles on shifting sand. Dr. Albers shows you how to shore up a solid emotional and mental foundation to sustain a healthy diet for years to come. If you want your healthy eating plan to last, read Eat.Q. (Shirzad Chamine, author of Positive Intelligence)

Susan Albers has done it again. (Elisha Goldstein, PhD, author of The Now Effect and co-author of A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Workbook)

From the Back Cover

If you've ever asked yourself, "Why do I know how to eat healthier to lose weight but don't do it?" this is the perfect book for you.

Susan Albers, Psy.D., a psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic Family Health Center, has discovered that the key to successful weight loss is not physical exercise, calorie counting, or even willpower—it's emotional intelligence (EI). EI includes the noncognitive aspects of intelligence, such as optimism, impulse control, empathy, and the ability to manage stress, which are predictors of future success—including the ability to lose weight and to keep it off long-term. (In contrast, lacking these skills can ignite nutritional neuroses, food phobias, and disordered eating that can cause cravings, binges, and weight gain.)

EI skills have traditionally been used to help people navigate their relationships with other people, but Dr. Albers has learned how to use them to help people strengthen their relationship with food. Even the smartest people can struggle with their emotional intelligence, which can keep us locked in a vicious cycle of dieting failure.

In Eat.Q., Dr. Albers uniquely and innovatively applies both self-help and business wisdom to weight loss for optimum success. You learn what your personal style is as it relates to your Eat.Q., and Albers helps you identify exactly what issues you have with eating. She discusses all different kinds of eating styles and explains each of the strategies, allowing you to customize her program to suit your total Eat.Q. profile—including your personal schedule, understanding what you eat and why, and how cravings, environment, and mood affect your relationship with food. She gives you specifics, teaching you how to refine your needs and desires to achieve better results.

Increase your Eat.Q. to eat better, drop excess pounds, and settle at a healthy weight for the long-term. It's a revolutionary new way of eating better and feeling great about your body that will release you from the craziness of yo-yo dieting once and for all.

About the Author

She graduated from the University of Denver and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University. a unique synthesis of ideas that can lead to weight loss or other goals
By V. Schucht
Most of us have heard of Emotional Intelligence (EI) and of course IQ. Well, Eat.Q. is concept that blends your knowledge of nutrition (what you know you should do) with mindfulness and EI skills in order to help you make healthy choices and lose weight (if that is your goal). Eat.Q. is a technique which asks you to "press the pause button" before you eat anything and make a quick assessment as follows: first, identify how you are feeling. next, accept that you have these feelings (instead of stuffing them down or trying to escape from them). and finally use these feelings to help you make a decision about what and what not to eat. The author provides a thorough description of each of these steps along with tips and tools to help you accomplish each one. With practice, this will all become second nature and you will be able to face each "moment of decision" with a mindful pause during which you use your emotions to help guide you to a smart decision that is in line with your goals. Brilliantly simple!

If you have never dabbled in the arenas of mindfulness or Emotional Intelligence before, there will certainly be a learning curve. But it's all so logical (even for my very scientifically minded left brain!) that it doesn't seem like a chore or anything that is impossible to do. It's just something you need to work on and practice in order to achieve success.

Although this is billed as a weight-loss book (see the subtitle) I think it is important to point out that this is more of a Mindful Eating book. Good to know this for two reasons... First, if it is your goal to lose weight, then that's perfect. the Eat.Q. concept can definitely get you there. There isn't any talk of what or how much to eat, but there are plenty of tools and concepts that will lead to weight loss. And second, if your goal isn't weight loss, this book is still for you because it is a book that gives you the tools to use your emotions to help you make the choices consistent with your goals (eating more healthful foods, or eating mindfully, or trying to stay young longer... whatever it may be).

I highly recommend this book without reservation. I definitely plan to use these concepts in my journey to become a more mindful eater. I will try to remember to update this review to let you know how I am doing (as I mentioned, there is a learning curve!!). My only criticism would be that the book is fairly heavy with information and not something to get through at a quick pace. There is a lot of supporting information... scientific studies, case studies, additional information boxes, checklists, and quizzes. I don't mind this myself... I like to have a lot of information and then I can sift through it to use what I need and leave (or skim) what I don't. But for some who would like a quick and to-the-point guide, some of this may seem superfluous. It's actually all good information and it all really reinforces and drives home the concepts.

Rasie your Eat.Q. !
By Deb
Put down those diet books, and raise your Eat.Q. instead.

A synthesis of the concepts of emotional intelligence (EI), emotional eating, and mindfulness, Eat.Q. is the capacity to make healthy food choices from an insight-driven mindset vs. an emotion-driven one.

To raise your Eat.Q., Susan Albers presents her EAT method (which, thankfully, is anything but a diet!):
"A combination of mindfulness and emotion-regulation skills adapted from the EI model, EAT helps you harness your emotional intelligence to alter your relationship with food and make healthy eating decisions. It can help you manage your eating, withstand cravings, and recover from slips or binges, even if you've struggled in the past. Here's your direction: increase your EI, and you increase your ability to stop emotional eating...However, to make the best use of this new tool, you must be willing to see the `problem' of overeating in a new way. It's not a nail you can pound into submission with a hammer--this is, with dieting. It's a mind-body issue that restriction can't fix." (p. 60)

Appropriately enough, her book is like a delicious three course meal. The first part of the book looks at how the four dimensions of emotional intelligence (EI)--the abilities to perceive, understand, use, and manage feelings--influence your relationship with food. By strengthening these abilities, you'll be more likely to take a mindful pause and respond vs. react when it comes to making food decisions. The second part of the book explores the common barriers to raising Eat.Q.: dieting, pleasure seeking, social eating, stress, and emotional trauma. (Ring any bells with you?) The final part of the book presents 25 tools for putting the EAT method into your daily practice.

Just to whet your appetite, here's the list of those tools:
*E*: Embracing Your Feelings, Learning to Reconnect

2. Words That Make You Go "Mmm"
3. Be Here
4. Firm Your Muscles, Firm Your Resolve

Realistic, resourceful, and really, really good, Susan's book clearly delivers on its hope:
"I can't promise that you'll always manage every feeling or always make the eating decision that benefits your health and well-being. But as you learn more about the emotions that drive you to seek comfort in food and sometimes sabotage your decisions, I hope you'll feel an incredible transformation and awareness grow within you. You'll be able to move ten steps ahead of and actually stop emotional eating in its tracks--now, not after the fact...My goal is to help you exit diet mode--the emotion-driven state of mind that persuades you that merely restricting your food intake will result in permanent weight loss--and enter Eat.Q. mode. There's a world of difference. Diet mode is `you feel it, you eat it,' while Eat.Q. mode is `you feel it, you use it.'"
(pp. 32, 86-87)

So, if you want to raise your Eat.Q., I highly recommend (mindfully) eating up this book.

Addresses the cause of overeating, not the symptoms!
By Talvi
Eat Q is a straightforward and somewhat dense book about understanding the emotional and psychological reasons for overeating (and how to approach the changes needed to fix that behavior). Unlike diets, which most often rely on eating less food or only certain types of food, Eat Q goes to the root of the matter and explains all the complex motivators, triggers, signals, and impulses that so often causes the weight in the first place. As such, it provides a much more sustainable long term weight loss and health goal since it addresses the problems, not the symptoms, that led to the weight gain.

The author presents the information in a very straightforward, if dry (the few graphics in the book are simple black and white power-point type graphs), presentation of the facts using case studies and patient experiences upon which to draw her conclusions. As such, the book does not pander or talk down to the reader and definitely isn't an empty 'rah rah' cheerleader tome bent on a quick high that ebbs shortly after the book is finished. Which isn't to say the book isn't motivating - since the author provides a very clear and easy way to address the stress or emotional overeating problem and finally break the cycle that so many people find themselves in with career dieting.

The book is broken down into three parts: What is Eat Q (identifying emotional eating and addressing it), Barriers to Eat Q (dieting, pleasure seeking, social eating, stress, trauma), and Tools for Success (embracing feelings, accepting emotions, turning to positive eating).

In all, although the book is a bit dry with a lot of psychology terms and acronyms (too many acronyms, to be honest), I found this to be a very informative book and look forward to using a lot of the solutions presented within. This is the perfect book for an online reader like a kindle.

Received as an ARC from the publisher.
