Katie Sprinkles & Surprises

CHAPTER 1 Mia, My Personal Adviser
Make them stop!” I cried, laughing. “They’re tickling my nose! I’m going to sneeze!”

But my best friend, Mia, can be a little harsh sometimes. “But they like you!” she protested, doubled over giggling.

I was sleeping over at Mia’s house, and even though she has a perfectly comfortable brand-new bed, she spread out her sleeping bag on the floor next to mine, so we could hang out and talk. But whenever anyone lies on the floor, Mia’s little fluffy dogs, Tiki and Milkshake, think that it’s playtime. So both of them were dancing around my face, sniffing me and licking my nose.

“Seriously, Mia!” I pleaded. “Call off your ferocious beasts!”

“Okay! Okay!” Mia got up and scooped up one wriggling dog in each arm. “Sorry, babies. Katie doesn’t want to play with you.”

She dropped them out the door and then shut it quickly.

“I like playing with them,” I said, sitting up. “But they were attacking me.”

“Those two? They’re afraid of ants,” Mia joked.

“They’re terrors,” I said. “But at least they’re cute. It’s too bad Mom is allergic to pets. I would love to have a dog. A big fluffy one.”

Then there was a knock on the door.

“Girls, it’s ice-cream time,” announced Mia’s stepdad, Eddie.

I smiled. “That’s my favorite time of day!”

We both jumped up and followed Eddie down the stairs to the kitchen, where the table was set up for an ice-cream sundae buffet. There were three cartons of ice cream, a bottle of chocolate sauce, a can of whipped cream, and bowls filled with cherries, sprinkles, and crumbled-up cookies.

Mia’s stepbrother, Dan, was leaning against the kitchen sink, eating out of a bowl that looked like it was mostly filled with whipped cream.

“What are you guys, twins?” he asked. (I forgot to mention that Dan is in high school. I have come to believe that most high school boys are kind of rude—that’s just how they are. Well, except for my friend Emma’s brother Sam. He is perfect.)

Anyway, I should explain why Dan made that crack about us being twins. It’s because Mia and I were wearing matching pajamas, pink ones with a cupcake pattern on them. We had bought them with the money we made from the cupcake business we’re in with our friends Emma and Alexis. It’s kind of funny. Any time I make money from the cupcakes, I end up spending it on something cupcake related. Last time, I got this cool stenciling kit you can use to make designs on your cupcakes. I guess you can say I am cupcake obsessed.

Mia is not as cupcake obsessed as I am, but she loved the pajamas as much as I did. And the sleepover was the perfect time to wear them.

“Yes, we’re twins,” Mia replied to Dan sarcastically, because apparently the best way to deal with a rude teenage boy is to be rude back. It must have worked, because Dan just shrugged and kept eating.

Eddie was anxious for us to dig in. “Come on, girls. The combination possibilities are endless!”

Mia’s mom, Mrs. Valdes, entered the kitchen and gave Eddie a hug. “What a sweet thing to do, honey,” she said. “Thanks!”

Mia looked at me and rolled her eyes again. I know it makes her all cringey when her mom and stepdad get lovey-dovey in front of her.

“Yes, thanks, Mr. Valdes,” I said. “This looks amazing.”

“What are you waiting for? Dig in before it melts!” Eddie said, motioning to us.

Mia grabbed a bowl and spoon and then stood there, thinking. I knew whatever she made would not only be the perfect balance of flavor, but also beautiful. Mia is a true artist. I’m not so picky. I took my bowl and started piling in everything.

Chocolate, mint-chip, and butter-pecan ice cream. Chocolate syrup, cookie crumbles, and cherries. Then I sprayed on the whipped cream and finally added the sprinkles.

“Katie, those sprinkles are going to fall off,” Mia remarked.

“You have to put them on last,” I informed her. “Because they make it pretty.”

Rainbow sprinkles are my favorite because they’re so colorful. Sometimes when people ask me what my favorite color is, I say “rainbow” because I just can’t decide. Mom heard me say it so much that she got me rainbow socks for Christmas. They’re my favorite.

I sat down at the table and was already halfway done eating my ice cream when Mia finally finished creating her bowl. As I predicted, it was a work of art. Mia had a perfect scoop of chocolate ice cream in her bowl, topped by a flower design painted with chocolate syrup. The center of the flower was a cherry.

“Mia, that’s gorgeous!” I said.

Mia grinned. “And delicious!” Then she dug in with her spoon.

I mock screamed. “Ahh! You’ve destroyed it!”

“It’s for a good cause,” Mia said, eating another spoonful.

When we finished we helped to clean up the kitchen and then went back up to Mia’s room and sprawled out on the floor again, this time without dogs.

“I’m so glad you could sleep over tonight!” Mia said. “What’s your mom doing again?”

“She and her new boyfriend are going to see a Broadway show, and she won’t be back till late,” I said. “She figured it would be better if I slept over than if she came and got me at midnight.”

“That’s good, but we’ll still be awake at midnight,” Mia said. “Remember last time? We were up until three!”

I shook my head. “And then Eddie made us pancakes at, like, the crack of dawn. I was so tired!”

Then I paused. There was something I had been wanting to ask Mia.

“So, Mia, I need your advice,” I began. “Of all my friends, you are the best expert on this topic.”

“What topic?” Mia asked.

“Moms with boyfriends,” I said. “I mean, your mom and Eddie dated for a while before they got married, right?”

Mia nodded. “Yeah.”

“Was Eddie always so nice?” I asked. “For a stepdad, he seems really great.”

“He is,” Mia said. “But it was still weird when they started dating. I kind of kept hoping that Mom would get back together with my dad, you know?”

I nodded, but I really didn’t know. Mia’s mom and dad got divorced just a few years ago, but my dad left me and my mom when I was a little baby. I didn’t grow up with him or anything. So there isn’t any part of me that wants to see them get back together. But I could understand why Mia might feel that way.

“So, why are you asking?” Mia asked. “Because of this new boyfriend?”

“Jeff,” I replied. “I haven’t met him yet. All I know about him is that he’s a teacher or something, which isn’t too exciting, if you ask me. And he likes to run, and he has a daughter who’s younger than I am.”

“Does your mom like him?” Mia asked.

“A lot, I think,” I told her. “She’s, like, happy all the time. She doesn’t get mad anymore when I do dumb stuff, like leave my socks on the floor.”

“Hmm,” Mia said thoughtfully. “Mom was like that right before she and Eddie got serious.”

“That’s what I’m afraid of,” I said. “On the drive over here she said it’s time for me to meet Jeff. Like, in person!”

“How else would you meet him?” Mia asked.

“You know what I mean,” I said. “Until now, he’s been more of . . . an idea. But once I meet him, it will all be real.”

Mia looked thoughtful. “You know, Eddie was the only boyfriend Mom ever introduced me to. I think she waited until she knew she was serious about him.”

“But what about your dad?” Katie asked. “Is he serious about Lynn?”

I knew Mia’s dad had been dating a woman named Lynn, who had a little boy who was kind of a pain.

“I think dads are different,” Mia answered. “He’s introduced me to other girlfriends before Lynn, and they didn’t last. So Lynn might not last either.”

“So maybe Jeff won’t last?” I asked a little bit hopefully.

But Mia shook her head. “No, I’m pretty sure when moms do it, they mean it.”

I groaned. “I thought so. I hope he’s as nice as Eddie.”

“I hope so too,” Mia said. “But look on the bright side. You have the upper hand here. If you hate him, your mom is going to have a problem. If he hates you, it’s his problem.”

“I don’t know,” I said. “I’m still nervous.”

Mia flopped over onto her back. “It’ll work out,” she said. “So, hey, did you hear about the new math teacher?”

“Oh, yeah!” I replied, quickly forgetting all about the Jeff problem. “Mr. Green, right? Everyone keeps talking about how cool he is.”

“He replaced Mr. Rodriguez,” Mia reported. “Mr. Rodriguez left town because his wife got a great new job in Chicago. So now Emma has Mr. Green. She says he’s really funny and sweet. And I heard that at his old school, he got elected Teacher of the Year, like, five times in a row.”

“Wow,” I said. “Is he going to coach boys’ track, too, like Mr. Rodriguez did?”

Mia nodded. “He just started. And you know what? I’ve heard a bunch of girls showed up to his first track practice just so they could stare at him.”

“Gross! He’s a teacher!” I said, making a face.

“And guess what else I heard?” Mia asked. “Olivia Allen has the biggest crush in the world on him. She’s in the same class as Emma, and Emma says Olivia even goes to get extra after-school help from him even though she’s pretty good at math. She’s just faking it.”

I shook my head. “That is so weird, but it’s exactly something Olivia would do!”

Mia and I gossiped some more, and even though we stayed up late, we fell asleep just before midnight. That night I dreamed Mom took me into this white room with a door, and she said, “Katie, I’d like you to meet Jeff.” And then she opened the door, and do you know what was behind it?

An ice-cream sundae with sprinkles! That’s what I get for eating ice cream late at night.

Great book for a 10 year old girl to read
By aleat
I love this book because it's fun, entertaining, and easy to read. It also has a lot of characters in it. They each have their own different personality. But one thing they all have in common is their love for cupcakes - both baking and eating! The characters remind me of my friends and I. One other thing is the author makes me feel like I'm in the book. I recommend this book for girls that like to read realistic fiction.

Another great story in the Cupcake Diaries series. My daughter started reading these when she was 11 - she is now almost 14 and still reads them to see how the "cupcake girls" are doing. Highly recommended!

Leap of Faith, by Jamie Blair

Can true love be built on lies? A teen on the run seeks relief and redemption in this gripping, “compulsively readable” (School Library Journal) romantic read that Kirkus Reviews calls a “marvelous debut, moving and suspenseful.”

Leah Kurtz has finally found a place to call home, a town where she and baby Addy can live in peace, far from the drug-infested place she grew up. Chris is one of the best parts of her new life, the only person who’s ever made her feel safe. And now that she’s found him, there’s no way she can tell the truth:

Her real name is Faith, not Leah. She’s seventeen, not nineteen. And the baby isn’t hers—Faith kidnapped her.

Faith’s history catches up with her when a cop starts asking questions and Chris’s aunt spots her picture in the newspaper. She knows it’s time to run again, but if Faith leaves, she’ll lose Chris. If Chris is in love with a lie, though, did Faith ever really have him in the first place?

From Booklist
“Insanely complicated” is Faith Leah Kurtz’s conclusion about her life. She’s parenting a baby, whom she kidnapped when she found out that her drugged-out, sinister mother planned to sell the infant, Addy, to a dealer. Fleeing Ohio for Florida, Faith, now called Leah, lands softly into the kindness of a loving family, which has suffered its own private pain. Gradually, Leah and Addy find their way into the family and into the heart of the sweet and gentle son, Chris. While Leah tortures herself, living a lie, Chris continues to plan for their future together, with Grandma and Aunt Ivy’s support and Dad’s skepticism. In Blair’s warm portrayal, Leah’s resilience gives her the strength to confront her past. Will her well-intentioned but illegal, impulsive actions jeopardize her new life? Short chapters match the flow of Leah’s adventures as a teen mom. With a blindingly quick conclusion, readers are left with hope and faith that things will work out while they wait for the inevitable sequel. Grades 8-12. --Gail Bush

Unknown
A girl struggles to escape her awful life with her abusive, drug-addicted mother, stealing her newborn sister to save the baby from the same fate in this stellar debut.

Sixteen-year old Faith lives with her strung-out mother, who is acting as a surrogate for a drug dealer “friend,” having his baby for $10,000. Faith sees that the baby will be condemned to the same life she has led, so she steals her mom’s car and the baby, whom she names Addy, from the hospital. Calling herself Leah, she flees to Florida, where she rents a room from Chris and his father. Chris immediately adores the baby, and Faith hopes for a romance with him. She seems to have found the perfect life for herself and Addy, but she knows that her constant deception, along with kidnapping and theft charges, eventually will catch up with her. Writing from Faith’s perspective, Blair delivers a wallop of a story. She focuses it on Faith’s difficulties simply feeding and caring for the squalling infant, a learning curve Faith must experience alone. While the novel’s realism may suffer from the idyll Faith finds so suddenly in Florida, the poignancy of her plight and the desperate sincerity of her motives easily overcome any quibbles about plausibility.

Leap of Faith
By princess bookie
My Thoughts: I really enjoyed this one!

We are introduced to Faith aka Leah who lives with her older sister and her mom. Her mom is a not a good mom. She decides she is going to have a baby for another couple (the mom) and Leah just doesn't like the idea of this. The mom just cares about the money. Leah doesn’t think her mom is in the right place mentally to do this.

When her mom has the baby, Leah gets an idea. To run off with the baby. She figures any life is better than what the baby will go through.

Leah takes the baby with pretty much nothing. She has the car but she has no place to live and not very much money. So when she finds a nice man whose renting a room out, she figures she can’t get any luckier. And this man, has a nice son who is only a few years older than Leah. The catch, he thinks the baby is Leah's and that she is older than what she is.

As Leah and Chris get close, she wants to tell him the truth. But she knows she shouldn't.

When things go haywire, Chris is actually pretty understanding.

I don’t want to say much about this one, its one of those contemps that you should read if you like contemps. I thought it was a wonderful debut. Very meaningful and yet very cute!

Things aren't perfect for Leah, that's for sure. Sometimes she seems mature, but other times, she doesn't make the best decisions.

This was a neat debut! I liked it!

Overall: I enjoyed reading it a lot. It was a very fast read for me. I liked Leah, and I really loved Chris. He was such a sweet and caring guy. He wasn't perfect but he was perfect for Leah. I liked this one a lot and I’ll read whatever Blair writes next!

Cover: Like it. Its not very colorful but its still a really cute cover.

What I’d Give It: 4/5 Cupcakes

Deeply moving, romantic, and emotionally driven
By SteelMagnolia1017
This isn't your typical love story, but that doesn't make it any less beautiful. The way Leah and Chris come together will have you swooning and believing that true love can prevail regardless of the odds. Both Leah and Chris come to the plate with their own demons and issues, but they're able to bring the best out of each other. I would highly recommend this book.

Beautifully Written Debut
By Amazon Customer
I agree with what a previous reviewer said - this isn't your typical love story. This book was beautiful and thought-provoking, with a cast of realistic characters who are easy to relate to and love. This was a quick read for me (about 3.5 hours) and it was impossible for me to put it down once I started.

The Cost of Being Poor: A Comparative Study of Life in Poor Urban Neighborhoods in Gary, Indiana (SUNY series, The New Inequalities), by S

Looks at the daily lives of poor people to demonstrate that the poor pay more than others, by both monetary and other measures, to meet basic needs.

While the negative effects of urban poverty are well documented, the everyday experiences of urban residents are often absent or secondary in urban studies research. The Cost of Being Poor rectifies this problem by examining both the noneconomic and the often-overlooked economic costs faced by residents of poor urban neighborhoods in Gary, Indiana. Using census, regional, and local data, and in-depth interviews with the residents of Gary, Sandra L. Barnes argues that many people incur costs resulting from the dual dilemma of being poor and residing in a poor urban area. She explores how factors such as race/ethnicity, neighborhood type, and location influence residents’ views, coping strategies, and unconventional approaches toward making ends meet. Well written and accessible, this study of Gary’s poor urban neighborhoods offers broad findings that apply to other similarly impoverished Rust Belt cities.

Review
"The prose is clean and lean and Barnes builds an interesting study of how people with limited resources manage their incomes wisely yet are forced at times to ignore the obvious negative economics of a situation. She does a very good job of showing the daily struggles of low-income people and the decisions they make, both good and bad.

A must for for urban and suburban dwellers.
By Charles E. Beavers
This is a good book. This is definitely a must for the citizen of America. People with money cannot educate you on the cost of being poor because they have never been poor. The author of this book was raise in Gary and whether she was poor or not is irrelevant, she has experienced it, if no more than by proxy. The book is a must to read.

I am writing a research paper and this book takes a more narrative view which is bias and not cohesive to the scope of my project. Still, if you want a first person perspective on life in Gary Indiana this is a good book.

About the Author

Paul Ekert

Paul Ekert started getting interested in video editing during the mid 90s when various exciting but crude video editing devices came to market. He soon moved away from this somewhat unreliable technology and transferred to MiroMotion capture cards (Miro were later bought by Pinnacle), which took the radical approach of downloading video from a camera to a PC's hard drive. The default software for these cards was Adobe Premiere. In the late 90s, he started working for a computer supplier, who specialized in building bespoke systems for non-linear editing, predominantly using Adobe Premiere with various hardware combinations supplied by Pinnacle and Matrox. He left this firm to work in the QA department of Pinnacle, one of the leading suppliers of non-linear editing hardware, who were eventually bought by Avid.

In 2005, he left to pursue a career as a freelance writer. Since that time, he has written five books on video editing, one based on Premiere Pro CS3 and another on Premiere Elements 7 (special effects based book). He also wrote one book on Pinnacle Liquid (NLE software) and its follow up, Avid Liquid. During this time, he wrote, filmed, directed, and edited several short films, some of which can be seen on his website. In all, he has over two decades experience in using non-linear editing programs, in particular, Adobe Premiere. A recent (2012) edit that was created using Premiere Pro CS6 (an airshow in Brazil using two GoPro Hero2 cameras) can be seen on youtu.be/OoD9dSyAXC0.

He is interested in most things that come under the heading of geeky. He is never really content to look at something and be impressed with what it does; he always needs to lift the hood, look underneath, and work out exactly how everything works. Of late, he has become fascinated with low-cost animation products such as iClone, and low-cost special effects tools such as HitFilm. He also maintains a long running interest in PC hardware and is always fascinated with various cameras; usually the ones just out of his price range. Find him at trade fairs drooling over them!

He is also a writer of plays, films scripts, novels, short stories, non-fiction books, and the odd poem. Examples of all these can be found on his website, www.PaulEkert.com. During the last few years, he has felt privileged to live a life where he can create and write, and he values the sometimes painful months he spent creating Ordinary Monsters, his first published novel (now available for the Kindle). He believes that all writing involves equal amounts of pleasure and pain, just like life. The trick is to enjoy and embrace them both.

An Excellent Resource From an Experienced Author and User
By M D McCallum
If you have ever struggled with Premier or want to get on the fast track to learning the application then Paul Ekert's newest book, Mastering Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 Hotshot, is the book for you. This is a project based learning experience with plenty of help from the author. I have always been a fan of project based instruction as there is little substitute for hands on experience. Paul is also an experienced author with several titles under his belt as well an advanced user of video editing applications.

Paul's combined experience as an author and an editor is readily apparent as he guides you through the various projects to completion. Paul will lead you through the fog thereby greatly decreasing the learning curve and get you quickly into productive and satisfying territory.

This book can be valuable to experienced users as well as novices. The technical expertise and tips shared in post production alone are worth the purchase plus you will be exposed to some industry jargon and methods that will improve your workflow and final render.

An excellent resource by all accounts.

Anyone serious about Premiere should have this book
By David K.
Great book, well written and full of fun (and of course useful!) projects. By the time you finish with the book, you will not only have a much better understanding of the software, but even editing in general. Lots of little tips & tricks throughout to help tweak your skills as an editor that go beyond Premiere.

The projects themselves are fun and most build upon themselves (for example, in one lesson you learn to add muzzle flashes, clones and because hey, you never know) laser beams). In the next lesson you kick it up a notch with an explosion, heat glow and explosion tremor.

Of course it also goes past flashy special effects and into project-saving post-production corrections. You will learn to correct white balance, color issues and even the infamous "rolling shutter" problem with many DSLRs. That particular lesson is key for when the words "we'll fix it in post" are uttered.

Highly recommended to anyone who is interested in getting more out of Adobe Premiere CS6.

Home for Christmas 1 CANTERWOOD IS COMING TO TOWN
Lauren

“OH, MON DIEU!” I SAID, laughing. “We’ll be there in five seconds!” I glanced behind me at my friends. Khloe Kinsella, Clare Bryant, Carina Johansson, and Lexa Reed grinned at me from the two rows of backseats in the Towers’s family SUV.

“There” was someplace my friends had never been.

Somewhere I was nervous to take them.

I shot a tight but excited smile to Mom, who was in the driver’s seat. I turned my gaze back to the front windshield. Mom flipped on the left blinker, and we made a familiar turn onto my street and started cruising past other houses in my neighborhood.

This is really happening, I thought. There’s no going back now—you’ve officially brought Canterwood home for Christmas.

My once-seedling of a dream was now reality. At first I’d thought of only inviting Carina, Canterwood’s Swedish foreign exchange student, home with me to Union so she wouldn’t be alone for the holiday. But my one-house-guest idea had exploded when I’d stumbled upon the parfait opportunity to invite all of my friends to come with me.

My BlackBerry vibrated on my lap. There was a BlackBerry message from Taylor Frost—my ex-boyfriend from home. He was a Canterwood student now too.

Taylor:

The guys & I just got 2 my house. U?

I wrote him back.

Lauren:

2 secs away from mine!

A warm blush crept over my cheeks when I thought about one of Taylor’s guests—my boyfriend, Drew Adams. He, Zack Reynolds, Garret van Camp, and Cole Harris—all from Canterwood—were en route to Taylor’s house.

I was glad that Union wasn’t a big town. My guy friends and Drew weren’t in walking distance, but I could reach Taylor’s house in five minutes via car. It felt so good to have everyone close for the holiday. All of my Canterwood friends had become more like family than I’d ever expected.

I clicked on Brielle Monaco’s name. She was one of my other Canterwood friends who lived in Union.

Lauren:

U almost home?

Brielle would have ridden with us, but space was tight, so her mom had picked her up. Bri and my other bestie from Union, Ana, would be joining my friends and me for the holiday. Ana attended my old school in Union—Yates Preparatory.

Brielle:

Couple of mins away! Sooo excited!

Lauren:

Me too! :D

“Lauren?”

“Huh?” I jerked out of my thoughts when I heard Khloe’s voice from the backseat.

“Is this your house?” Khloe asked.

I blinked twice and realized Mom had slowed the SUV in front of what was indeed our house. My mouth was dry—I had no idea what to say. Suddenly I was overwhelmed at having all of my friends here. I visualized having a cup of Peppermint Twist tea in front of the fireplace. Just thinking about tea calmed my nerves. I had to keep reminding myself that this Christmas wasn’t about us. We had some serious work to do. My nerves evaporated. I almost wanted to jump out of the Suburban and run up to my house.

“Welcome to my home!” I said.

The girls cheered from the backseat.

Good series
By Shannyn
My daughter has "graduated" from Pony Pals and Pony Days, Magic Ponies and Magic Pony, etc, but not yet ready for some of the older series. She is in 4th grade and around an RL 5.6, so we wanted more challenging but not grown up. The manager at Barnes and Noble recommended Book 1 to her and she read it and was hooked, so we got the rest of the series for her for Christmas. She is on book 5 and I imagine, since it a new series, that the books will retain resell value, although she plans to keep this series to re-read again whenever she wants to.

Book came with about 20 pages ripped
By S. Santos
My daughter was SO excited to get her new Canterwood book but when she was flipping through the pages she notices that at least 20 pages looked like they had been chewed off at the bottom of the pages. I wanted to send it back but she was so excited to read the book that she wouldn't let me send it back. She enjoyed the book but not the ripped pages.

Undecided...
By sandcat
Because this story is told from the view of both Lauren and Sasha, it was sometimes difficult to keep straight since both are told from the first person perspective. The story kept going back and forth between the two, which was sometimes confusing.

I think Lauren's hero worship of Sasha is a bit overdone. I'm a huge fan of Steffen Peters but I don't worship him like he's some sort of God. That both girls would come up with the same exact idea, right down to arranging for theirs and their friends' horses to be brought over from Canterwood Crest is beyond believable as is the donation made to the horse rescue. The only part of the story I enjoyed was about the horse adopt-a-thon.

I'm sorry to see the series come to an end after reading it for a couple of years now, but it was time. I wish e author the best in her future writing endeavors.

Cosmo must journey to the past to understand his future in this humorous, heartbreaking, and brilliantly original debut novel.

Cosmo’s granddad used to be the cleverest person he ever knew. That is, until his granddad’s mind began to fail. In a rare moment of clarity, his granddad gives Cosmo a key and pleads with Cosmo to go to the South Gates of Blackbrick Abbey, where his granddad promises an “answer to everything.” In the dead of night, Cosmo does just that.

When Cosmo unlocks the rusty old gates, he is whisked back to Blackbrick of years past, along with his granddad—now just sixteen-years old and sharp as a tack—beautiful Maggie, and the absolutely dreadful Corporamore family. But much more than time travel adventure awaits Cosmo on the old, sprawling estate: he’ll also discover revealing truths about his granddad, his family, and himself.

Abounding with humor and heart, this extraordinary novel is an original, unforgettable story about lost memories, lost times, and lost lives, reclaimed.

From Booklist
Cosmo is dealing with a series of losses: his brother died accidentally, Mom left him with her parents, and now Grandpa Kevin has developed Alzheimer’s. In a moment of lucidity, Grandpa hands Cosmo a key to his boyhood home, Blackbrick Abbey, urging him to go there. The boy arrives (slipping back in time in the process) to find his grandfather as a 16-year-old house servant. Cosmo enjoys spending time with Kevin, but wonders if he can tweak the past in order to prevent some current problems. Fitzgerald’s debut is narrated in a breezy twenty-first-century style that keeps the story from becoming maudlin (“The first time Granddad peed in the dishwasher was when me and my gran realized we were going to have to make a few changes”). The plot depends heavily on coincidence, but Cosmo gleans much from the young Kevin and his time-slip experience, enabling him to return home able to accept Grandpa’s impending death. Pair with Mary Downing Hahn’s Time for Andrew (1994). Grades 4-7. --Kay Weisman

Review
"Original and compelling, this is a beautifully written novel about love, loss, history and memory. Wonderful storytelling." (The Bookseller (UK))

"This beautiful novel is deceptively easy to read; the story rattles along while dealing sensitively with issues of love, loss, illness and memory. It’s a moving and poignant story, but there are funny moments, too. Back to Blackbrick is an impressive debut novel that already feels like a classic." (welovebooks.com)

“The book is a thoughtful blend of time travel adventure and family drama, and Cosmo’s voice balances wry humor with deeply felt angst over his grandfather’s illness Fans of gentle fantasies and readers with relatives suffering similar physical challenges will find Cosmo a worthwhile companion.” (BCCB)

“Debut author Fitzgerald adeptly conveys Cosmo’s love for his grandfather and his fury at the way arrangements are being made all around him; Cosmo’s distinctively Irish speech is another strong point. Watching Cosmo learn what can and can’t be fixed makes for a strong story that’s less about time travel than about love and memory.” (Publishers Weekly)

"Adventures and contretemps ensue, making for a rollicking ride. Cosmo’s fresh and sassy approach to life is true to his youthful perspective. His age is left intentionally vague (as is what happened to his father), and his voice engages. The solidly constructed time-travel plot adds to the fun." (School Library Journal)

Spin Masters: How the Media Ignored the Real News and Helped Reelect Barack Obama, by David Freddoso

The biggest story of the election was how the media ignored the biggest story of the election.

Amid all the breathless coverage of a non-existent War on Women, there was little or no coverage of Obama’s war on the economy—how, for instance, part-time work is replacing full-time work; how low-wage jobs are replacing high-wage ones; how for Americans between the ages of 25 and 54 there are fewer jobs today than there were when the recession officially ended in 2009, and fewer, in fact, than at any time since mid-1997.

The downsizing of the American economy wasn’t the only story the media missed—or suppressed—there was also the unraveling of Obama's foreign policy and the deadly scandals at home (Fast & Furious) and abroad (the terrorist attack that killed the American ambassador at Benghazi).

But instead of serious, substantive journalism, the media reported ad nauseam on trifles (Big Bird), Republican-baiting hysteria (how everything the Republicans said was allegedly “racial code”), and distortions of Romney’s remarks (such as the 47% comment).

The media dropped the ball in covering the 2012 election, writes David Freddoso, editorial page editor of The Washington Examiner, and in doing so the media failed in their responsibility to keep politicians honest and the public well-informed. Freddoso, a New York Times bestselling author and former congressional reporter for National Review, fills this volume not only with outrageous examples of media bias, but also with dozens of real stories that genuinely inquisitive reporters should have relished but that the overwhelmingly liberal press didn't even bother to cover.

Full of the news you didn’t hear about in 2012, David Freddoso’s Spin: How the Media Ignored the Real News and Helped Reelect Barack Obama will be the most provocative and accurate take of just how Barack Obama managed to get reelected amidst the worst economic times since at least the 1970s, and how the media helped him do it.

Review
''Spin Masters shows just how far to the left the news media have lurched. There are other ways to study media bias, but Freddoso's book is a lot more fun than poring through the first forty-two Gail Collins columns in the New York Times about Mitt Romney driving with a dog on the roof of his car. (The dog liked it!)'' Ann Coulter, #1 New York Times bestselling author --Ann Coulter, #1 New York Times bestselling author

''David Freddoso's terrific new book Spin Masters documents more than routine media bias - though he has plenty of outrageous examples of that. It's about how the media ignored or buried the big stories - like how Obama has hollowed out our economy or openly trampled on the Constitution - in favor of Democratic Party press releases. Freddoso reports the news you didn't hear during the election - and also shows how we can avoid falling prey to the hypocritical and absurdly partisan liberal media again.'' --David Limbaugh, New York Times bestselling author

''If you had a scintilla of respect left for the mainstream media, David Freddoso's excellent new book Spin Masters will shred it. He reports on the big stories the mainstream media didn't and shows how if you relied on the mainstream media, you would have been less well informed than if you turned off your radio and television and canceled your newspaper subscription.'' --David Harsanyi, author of Obama's Four Horsemen

''Media bias mostly takes the form of omission. In 2012, the media mostly omitted mention of Obama's many offenses against ethics, good government, and the truth. In Spin Masters, David Freddoso deftly tells the stories that most of the mainstream media missed because a dog on the roof of a car was more interesting than, say, an illegal military intervention in Libya or serial abuse of presidential power. I challenge anyone to read this book and then honestly deny that Obama's reelection was aided by a media that didn't do its job right.'' --Timothy P. Carney, senior political columnist, Washington Examiner

''Conservatives need to know they are not just up against political activists on the left. They are also up against a media that leans left, regurgitates left-wing talking points, and transitions back and forth between left-wing institutions and the mainstream media. David Freddoso does an excellent job shedding light on just what conservatives are up against and what they must do to fight back.'' --Erick Erickson, editor of RedState.com

''Freddoso not only shows how deeply in the Obama tank many journalists were in 2012. He also serves as an alternate-universe assignment desk for the stories unbiased reporters might have written.'' --Byron York, chief political correspondent, Washington Examiner

Maybe Spin Masters is so good you can review it without buying it, but buy it for sure and send some to friends.
By Amazon Customer
David Freddoso has done it again with Spin Masters - I can see it roaring onto best seller lists with the most horrifying story yet about how Obama won a second term with the collusion of the mainstream media. No, strike that. Read Spin Masters and see in detail how the mainstream media have promoted themselves to a federal agency of the White House, the Ministry of Propaganda, specializing in hiding anything good about conservatives and inventing anything bad instead. This book Spin Masters: How the Media Ignored the Real News and Helped Reelect Barack Obama is a blood pressure test until the last chapter, "Fighting Back With Good Ideas," which contains some inspiring, specific recommendations that are politically feasible. Some great writers are said to be born with ink in their veins, but David Freddoso grasps every niche and hiding-hole of Washington politics so note-perfectly that he must have been born with marble dust in his veins. If enough people read Spin Masters, it will certainly affect the coming mid-term elections of 2014 in ways that Emperor Obama will not like. Buy some for your friends.

Careful and Documented Research
By David J. Spellman
The hallmark of David Freddoso's books is research, careful and fully-documented research. In his third book, David Freddoso provides ample examples of how the mainstream media puffed the stories that were positive for Candidate Obama and ignored or marginalized those stories that were to his detriment. I won't ruin the book for you by providing a summary, suffice to say that all the major issues (foreign and domestic) are examined carefully. The book also shows how the opposing candidate was characterized and defined by the media. My favorite example is that New York Times columnist Gail Collins recounted more than fifty times the tale of Mitt Romney strapping a dog-carrier to the roof of his car to bring Seamus the dog on vacation with the family. I remember reading Ms. Collins' column every Saturday and wondering why it was that she would work in that anecdote seemingly every week. This book will be an important starting point for future historians who wish to gauge the impact of a monolithic media on public policy and elections.

Not eathshaking but important
By Flora Bunda
In reading Spin Masters, I found that most of the information was already available in my lexicon. I recognized many things that were obvious to me, so I believe this would be a good choice for those interested in politics but who lack the time to keep up with details. The lack of the timely reporting of various facts by some in the media make it difficult to make sense of some situations. It's nice to have this book to organize these details.

For example: in one of the debates, President Obama said he had acknowledged on the morning of Sept. 12, 2012 that Benghazi was a terrorist attack. Later we found out that on that same afternoon, he had told one of the major networks that he didn't know what it was. The network left that portion of the interview on the cutting room floor until the election. Is it important for our president to tell the complete truth?
