A Radiant Sky (A Beautiful Dark), by Jocelyn Davies

Perfect for fans of Lauren Kate's Fallen series and Becca Fitzpatrick's Hush, Hush saga, this darkly romantic story that began with A Beautiful Dark and gathered intensity in A Fractured Light comes to a thrilling conclusion in A Radiant Sky.

Since the night of her seventeenth birthday, Skye has been torn between two opposites: light and dark, the Order and the Rebellion, Devin and Asher. But in a shocking decision, she chose neither. With the help of her friends, Skye now forges her own path, setting out to gather an uprising of Rogues. These half-angels may be the key to maintaining the balance. But completing the mission is more difficult—and dangerous—than she could have imagined. And it comes at a cost: her greatest love may now be a lethal enemy. Because it's not just the Order that sees her as a threat. The Rebellion does, too. Dark days lie ahead, and if Skye is to survive, she'll need to rely on her extraordinary powers and the strength of her will. Because she has a future—and a love—that's worth fighting for.

From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—Faced with a choice between light and dark, the Order and the Rebellion, 17-year-old Skye, daughter of two fallen angels, chooses neither. Instead, she has decided that the only way to end the war between the two groups of angels is to forge a new path. This decision means giving up her boyfriend, Asher, whose loyalty lies with the Rebellion. It means being hunted by both factions, who will use all of their powers to either destroy her or control her Rogue powers for themselves. It means anyone who joins Skye-human, angel, or Rogue-is in danger. Skye's heart is broken and whispers in her mind tell her that she'll fail, but destiny can be rewritten and love could be the powerful force that wins the day. Davies packs a lot into this trilogy finale. Several new characters are introduced, old characters change loyalties, and secrets are finally revealed before the myriad threads come together in a satisfying ending. Readers who have enjoyed the earlier titles will devour this one and want more (the ending leaves that door open). Newcomers to the series can easily pick up A Radiant Sky as their introduction. Either way, this fast-paced, well-written novel should have no trouble attracting readers.—Heather Miller Cover, Homewood Public Library, AL

From Booklist
In the final title in Davies’ popular Beautiful Dark series, Skye has refused to align herself with either the Order or the Rebellion, choosing instead to create a third army, the Uprising, in an attempt to save the world. In doing so, she has severed her ties with Asher, the Rebel angel whom she loves and turned a suspicious eye on her Guardian angel friend, Deven. But her high-school friends vow loyalty to Skye and her ideals, in spite of the danger her friendship demands. This title introduces a delightful young person with budding powers much like Skye’s; follows the search for two Rogues who were friends of Skye’s parents; and features a love-smitten Aunt Jo. Once again, Davies has melded the mundane and the paranormal into an exciting story of good and evil, order and chaos, and love and loss—all in the span of Skye’s senior year. When the characters finally line up to fight to keep the balance of the heavens in check, it will signal the ultimate battle for love, peace, and normal high-school adolescence. Grades 8-11. --Frances Bradburn

At least the series looks good on my shelve
By Sofia Lazaridou
The end was AWFUL! The final battle was for most of its part underwhelming and two people died. And those two people could have been alive and living happily, but for some unexplained reason the author killed them and didn't bring them back. She could, especially with everything else that happened. You can't build a story that will make the reader like this character again, only to have him killed later.

The only reason I am not saying I want my money back is because the book is pretty and looks good on my shelve. The ending was one of the biggest disappointments and the way things ended seemed just as an excuse and an easy way to get away with the war we the author prepared us for. An epilogue was in need. I liked the ending sentence, but the story needed the epilogue. We didn't even see S key or anyone grieving for the loss of the person who died.

Skye for most of the book was pinning for Asher and he wasn't present. I wanted in the end to see Ian and Skye together. Asher should have been the one to die. Ian has been always there for Skye and was supporting her so he would have been an exquisite choice, but time and time again, I was told that Ian was never going to be something other than friend for Skye. Skye was focusing too much on Asher and that made her weak in my eyes. The day of the final battle she goes to search him!

Cassie and Dan were the cutest couple in this book and my faith. Earth (see what the author did here?) is a new character and was too easy to like her. I wish she was the main character instead of Skye. Skye couldn't put two and two together. Again! It makes me wonder how she wasn't killed. The story should have been a little more focused on the relationship between Aaron, aunt Jo and Earth.

The plot had many holes and I can say that the only taste I had in my mouth after the book ended was a disappointment. The author could have explored the story and given us a true battle. The last chapters were just a rushed way to rush a trilogy that I had been reading for the last three years. I gave my money for this book and I can say that I would not recommend this to anyone because the end is not something anyone should read.

Good for readers who enjoy angel/Nephilim sub-genres
By Sash & Em: A Tale of Two Bookies
Rating: 3.5 stars (I rounded up on GR because I loved the rest of the trilogy.)

The Scenery: I love that this is set in Telluride, Colorado. Just from reading the books and the beautiful imagery, I would jump at the chance to go visit. I am really hoping that Love the Bean is a real place…*sigh*

The Characters: I really adored Skye in this trilogy and there are a few other characters that really become endearing in this last book. However, there are also a few that you kind of want to throttle…I’ll leave that for you to decide.

The Plot: I could’ve called that from a mile away. Sorry, guys. I did enjoy a majority of the book…so many feels, so many twists and turns, but sadly they were a bit predictable.

The Love: Also, here a little predictable for YA…semi-love triangles. Girls love bad boys (Rebels, if you will), but Sky also has some love to go around for a Guardian. I think the love triangle needs to retire, y’all. I wanted to see a bit more depth in the character’s relationships. The deepest one I saw was between two who were fated to be together and Dan & Cassie!

The Bad Guys: …are everywhere…and everyone. There is a lot of back and forth here with dark and light, allies and enemies…former friends that are now enemies but still care about each other. Whew. A lot going on, am I right? Then there are the GENUINE bad dudes. The ones that are easy to hate and it makes you cringe every time they make an appearance.

The Good Guys: …seem to be a tiny group…or are they? Well, at least you get introduced to some REALLY awesome characters (some even younger than you might expect). Ready for the battle royale?

The Ending: We all knew we would end up here. The end. The battle to end all battles (supposedly). It has been brewing since the first book and now we have reached the culmination of all of Skye’s choices. I was actually caught off guard by how the book ended, and honestly…I don’t know how to feel about it. Let me know what y’all thought!

Recommendation: I would recommend this book to readers that enjoy the angel/Nephilim sub-genres and if you loved the first two books of the series. It was a really quick read for me and over all I enjoyed it.

Near perfect conclusion
By Britt R.
The Beautiful Dark series has been one of my favorite angel-centered young adult series and I'm sad to see it end. There was character growth, a great plot, two swoon worthy guys, and a main character who isn't perfect but doesn't let that get in her way. A Radiant Sky was a wonderful ending to this series, and even though it had a couple moments that were a little cheesy, I loved it.

Skye has grown up a lot in the past year. Since discovering she is the daughter of angels, one from the Order and the other from the Rebellion, she's had attempts on her life, on her friends' lives, and watched as people she cares about suffer. Instead of taking the easy way out by picking a side to fight for, she defies everyone and chooses to fight for herself, for her cause. She will not belong to either faction and allow herself to be controlled as a means to an end. Making this choice puts both sides against her and puts the lives of those around her at risk.

Skye has really come into her own power. She's embracing her powers, learning how to fight and control them. She's playing an active role now, making her decisions and not allowing them to be made for her. She's standing up to her fears and learning how to fight past them, even if she can't get rid of them. Her family and friends are what make her strong and she uses those bonds to motivate her. It was wonderful to read her becoming the woman she needed to be in order to fight for the world she loves.

Asher is a little absent in this novel, but I don't really mind. It forced Skye to realize who was important and worth fighting for. The moment they come back together is completely worth every moment of Asher being gone. Devin also plays an interesting role in this novel. The love triangle is gone, but that doesn't mean he isn't in Skye's life anymore. They come to an agreement about their relationship, one that they both can live with, and in the end it makes them both stronger.

There were only a couple moments that took me out of the novel. I'm all for personal reflection and realization, but there were times when it went past reflection and moved into nearly eye-roll inducing. It didn't happen enough to really hurt the book for me, but I could have done without them. There were also a few things that fell into place a little too perfectly; a little more challenge surrounding those moments would have been nice.

A Radiant Sky is a fantastic conclusion to a great series. It is the showdown between order and chaos, where the outcome isn't known until the very end. It kept me guessing and intrigued, wondering how things would unfold and what the losses would be. And when I finally reached those last words, everything felt right. It was the ending Skye earned.
