L.A. Son: My Life, My City, My Food, by Roy Choi, Tien Nguyen, Natasha Phan

Los Angeles: A patchwork megalopolis defined by its unlikely cultural collisions; the city that raised and shaped Roy Choi, the boundary-breaking chef who decided to leave behind fine dining to feed the city he loved—and, with the creation of the Korean taco, reinvented street food along the way.

Abounding with both the food and the stories that gave rise to Choi's inspired cooking, L.A. Son takes us through the neighborhoods and streets most tourists never see, from the hidden casinos where gamblers slurp fragrant bowls of pho to Downtown's Jewelry District, where a ten-year-old Choi wolfed down Jewish deli classics between diamond deliveries; from the kitchen of his parents' Korean restaurant and his mother's pungent kimchi to the boulevards of East L.A. and the best taquerias in the country, to, at last, the curbside view from one of his emblematic Kogi taco trucks, where people from all walks of life line up for a revolutionary meal.

Filled with over 85 inspired recipes that meld the overlapping traditions and flavors of L.A.—including Korean fried chicken, tempura potato pancakes, homemade chorizo, and Kimchi and Pork Belly Stuffed Pupusas—L.A. Son embodies the sense of invention, resourcefulness, and hybrid attitude of the city from which it takes its name, as it tells the transporting, unlikely story of how a Korean American kid went from lowriding in the streets of L.A. to becoming an acclaimed chef.

Review
Street-wise, honest in its admission of trials and punctuated with vernacular swagger, Choi’s debut pays tribute to family and his enduring fascination with the melting pot of Los Angeles. (Kirkus Reviews)

“While [Jacques] Pepin’s autobiography was the epitome of the traditional chef’s life, it may be that Choi’s will be the same for the new generation … “L.A. Son,” co-written with Tien Nguyen and Natasha Phan, pops with Choi’s hip-hop verbal rhythms.” (Los Angeles Times)

‘With driving metaphors coming fast and furious throughout this memoir cum cookbook, there is no doubting and no pulling away from Choi’s gritty embrace of L.A.’s mean streets.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))

“Choi is the rare chef whose life story--which includes working with chef Eric Ripert and a weeklong cocaine binge--is as compelling as his food.” (Food & Wine)

“At the moment, Roy Choi is one of the most prominent lenses the nation has into L.A.” (Los Angeles Times)

His beautiful book .... is two parts story (Choi’s coming up), one part recipe (his OMG crazy good creations, like ketchup fried rice). You may never cook from this book (though the recipes are eminently doable), but it won’t matter. It’s a fun flip even if all you do is drool.” (Associated Press)

“A a memoir-cookbook that moves like a novel.” (New York Times, cover of 'Dining' Section, in article about Roy's new restaurant)

“In its pages, and even more so in person, one finds in Choi a personality who is at once high-end and low-end, flawed and at the top of his game, relentless and chill, coarse and refined-and absolutely, unapologetically authentic.” (Ad Week)

Bringing it real.......
By Bobby Arellano
Roy, brings it real. There's no cutting corners with Roy's accounts of his upbringing. I found many similarities in the things he experienced as a child to my own. His journey is worth reading about and although it won't bring you to really know the man, it will at least allow you to be level set on where he came from.

Buy for Biography, Not for Recipes
By A. Weitz
I'm lucky that I live in LA and can eat at a Roy Choi spot at least twice a month. My favorite is Chego but A-Frame and Sunny Spot are also great. (I gave up on trying to find the Kogi trucks and honestly, I lost patience with having to wait on those long food truck lines.) But my point is: I love Roy Choi's food. The Sour Cream Hen House is probably among my top 5 things to eat in all of LA.

That's part of why I was disappointed with this book. I was hoping for some recipes that resembled some of the amazing dishes I've tried at Choi's restaurants -- the pickles and dressing at A-Frame, the meatballs at Chego, the wings at Sunny Spot, and so on. Instead, the book contains recipes like Roy Choi's version of Scott Conant's spaghetti and tomato sauce (there's also a separate recipe for spaghetti with chili sauce.) I appreciate how he intersperses recipes while telling his life story but that's why I think this book works better as a biography first and the recipes as a bonus. The recipes are in the book for nostalgia and sentimental value -- not because they're unique or groundbreaking. This is the bummer.

The other thing is, I've had this book for a couple of weeks and I've tried several of the recipes with varying results. One of the things I like about Roy Choi, besides how his food tastes, is his philosophy and his "keeping it real" roots. I'm glad the cookbook is riddled with f-bombs and real, raw emotion. It makes for a fascinating read. My only problem is with the recipes. They're written as if Roy Choi was standing next to you, telling you how to do it, which is cool. Except -- I always seem to have a question about the recipe. It almost seems like nobody tested or proofread the recipes. A perfect example of this is how the $4 Spaghetti recipe differs in the Food & Wine recipe version from the book version. It's really different -- from cooking times to the amount of olive oil to use and so on. The Food & Wine version is more succinct and easier to do. But it also answers questions like, "What the hell do I do with the mushrooms now?" The book never tells you that you're making a mushroom stock and should discard them. This is a common thread through the book. (And the truth is, the $4 pasta isn't so great after the 4 hours of cooking that goes into it.)

So, my main knock is that there don't seem to be any real, signature Roy Choi dishes here from any of his restaurants -- and instead you get recipes for a lot of humdrum dishes that don't really have that Roy Choi flavor he's known for (e.g., there's a recipe for baked sliced potatoes with butter -- this is where his nostalgia overtakes reader expectations.) My other knock is that the recipes are not really easy to follow -- or they presume a lot of the reader. I'm not a chef -- I'm just a fan of Roy who likes to cook.

That said, Roy's personal story is inspiring and he seems like a cool, genuine person. He's had a huge impact on cuisine in LA and beyond and for that alone, this book is worth reading. But don't buy it expecting the magician to reveal any of his well-known tricks.

By William T. Pottle
This is a fantastic and comprehensive book covering many issues of sword care that are not found in most books on the subject. There is also a wealth of pictures, diagrams, and historical information, including quite a bit of information about the underlying physics behind sword cutting. Very good background for people wanting to study Tameshigiri
By Roninkan com
This was a good read and helps to emphasize and teach a great foundation in japanese swordsmanship. I would have given it 5 stars but I think that they need to update this book for 2013. Some key items have changed in terms of technology and accessibility of swords and wara. Color images and if the book was less wordy (meaning if the author stuck to the books topic more closely) could have helped but these are small things and the extra info is actually very nice to have.
If you are a cutter I think its a must read.

Interesting book
By Gusadius
As someone who is trying to find out more about the proper way to cut with a Japanese sword, I found this book very informative and interesting. The presentation of the information is systematic and comprehensive. The topic covered moves from a short history to the mechanics of cutting and the introduction of some basic positions and care to preparation of cutting targets.

Roberto Mancini: The Man Behind Manchester City's Greatest-Ever Season is the exhilarating account of how Roberto Mancini guided the Noisy Neighbours from the Blue side of Manchester to the top of the Premier League. Since the Italian took the helm at Manchester City, the club's Premier League challenge has grown stronger with each season. Backed by the fabulous wealth of his Emerati bosses, 'Bobby Manc' has already turned himself into a club legend. With talent such as Yaya Toure, David Silva and Sergio Aguero on the pitch, bought to the tune of GBP 150 million, the club's directors and fans now demand nothing less than the Premier League title and regular Champions League football. And that is exactly what Roberto Mancini has delivered. This exciting new biography looks at his appointment as manager in 2009, the third place finish in 2010-11 that secured Champions League football plus the FA Cup win over Stoke City, which ended the club's longest trophy drought in its history. It also details the astonishing events of 13 May 2012, which gave City their first title since 1968 - one that's unlikely to be their last. It also looks at Mancini's background and his outstanding playing and managerial career in his native Italy. Along the way, the book looks at the highs, lows and endless stream of talking points, from the Carlos Tevez saga and the controversial antics of Mario Balotelli to the 6-1 thrashing of Manchester United in their own backyard and the extraordinary, nail-biting finale to 2011-12 campaign, when City waited until the final two minutes of the season to claim the title. But this is not just a book for City fans, it is a hugely entertaining read for all sports fans who want an insight into how Roberto Mancini propelled himself, and his club, into the history books in the most spectacular fashion imaginable.

This book does a good job of explaining the InnoDB internals. I have found particularly useful the section where it describe in detail all the server variables affecting InnoDB. Although these variables are also in the MySQL manual, some of them have never been explained to me as thoroughly as this book as done.

The title claims that it is a InnoDB reference. If is more than that, as the reference part id covered in three chapters. The rest of the book gives useful advice on maintenance, monitoring, and troubleshooting.

Makes good on its intention to be a quick reference for MySQL+InnoDB
By Scarygliders
Instant InnoDB from Packt Publishing and written by Matt Reid is, as its title suggests, intended to be an easy to read and understand reference guide rather than a weighty tome covering every painful aspect of InnoDB in excruciating detail. Does it fit this description and aim? Read on to find out...

Chapter Summaries
-----------------

Once you get past the table of contents, the book starts off with a Preface summarizing its aims, briefly describing each chapter, and tells you what you'll require to have, to play around with the examples in the book.

The first chapter is all about getting started with InnoDB, and lists its basic features with helpfully short descriptions of each. Then tells you how to install MySQL with InnoDB, and verifying that the database engine is set up and running properly. It's all very straightforward and easy to understand, and if like me you weren't knowledgeable on stuff like ACID compliance, for example, then you learn a great deal from the down to earth text. The chapter ends with creating your first InnoDB table, informing you of further considerations in database creation.

The second chapter takes you through the basic InnoDB configuration parameters - a topic important to understand and to get right. In my own dealings with InnoDB in the past, I've managed to inadvertently cause MySQL to either not start or to slow down - all because I wasn't knowledgeable enough on the subject. This chapter gives you the ammunition you need to Get Things Right, explaining how MySQL allocates memory, what the different buffers are and do, and calculating if you have enough RAM for your configuration. It then goes through some of the basic parameters with helpful explanations on all.

Chapter 3 covers advanced configuration parameters, building on what you learned previously when you created a stable database configuration. It informs you of the pitfalls of incorrectly configuring the tuning parameters of InnoDB, how to measure the I/O performance of your storage system, and recommendations for what storage system to use. After this there are descriptions of the static and dynamic InnoDB variables and how you can use them to optimize your database.

Chapter 4 is all about load testing the InnoDB engine for performance, once again explaining in as simple way as possible how to go about such testing, and valuably walks you through an example of how to ask the right questions in the first place in order to achieve proper testing. You get to learn of the various MySQL load testing and benchmarking utilities/applications, filesystem benchmarking, and InnoDB flush methods.

Chapter 5′s first topic is short but sweet, talking about maintenance procedures in the form of adding/resizing InnoDB log files, adding tablespaces, and using RAW tablespaces - a feature I didn't know existed until now. After that comes equally valuable information on InnoDB Monitoring, with descriptions of various INFORMATION_SCHEMA database values, how to show the MySQL global status variables, details on third party monitoring resources, plus some handy equations for analyzing InnoDB stats.

Strangely enough arrives Chapter 6, and that's all about digging yourself out of any trouble you might have with InnoDB, whether it be systems crashes, performance issues, and viewing the status variables, followed by explanations of various InnoDB error codes, ending with a list of troubleshooting and backup applications.

The final Chapter 7 is a brief listing of references and links to documentation, reference books, links to various terminology you should know when using MySQL and InnoDB, and handy links to articles on tuning InnoDB.

Conclusion
----------

Instant InnoDB is an invaluable book if you plan to or are running MySQL with the InnoDB database engine. It doesn't go in-depth into many subjects, but that's not its purpose. As a quick reference guide it contains everything you need to know or remind yourself of running InnoDB at a glance, and for that purpose it fits the bill nicely, and should be part of the MySQL/InnoDB administrator's bookshelf - real or virtual. It is well worth the very reasonable asking price.

BEST TRANSLATION OF GOD'S BESTSELLER
By STEPHEN T. McCARTHY
Let me quickly dispense with the negative aspects of this Bible first: The words of Christ are not printed in red; the personal pronouns for God and Jesus are not capitalized; there is no center-column referencing; and quotation marks are not employed. What this version needs is an overhaul by a good editor, and to be made available in a durable leather-bound and/or hardcover edition.

In his book, NEW TESTAMENT ORIGIN, Dr. George Lamsa states, 'Not a word of the Scriptures was originally written in Greek...the Scriptures were written in Aramaic.' I believe that he is correct and that those Christian apologists and ministers scrutinizing the nuances of Greek words for deeper understanding would be better served investigating the subtle meaning of Aramaic words and the cloaked truth behind Aramaic idioms.

The Aramaic word for 'camel' is written identically to the word for 'rope.' When the original scrolls were being transferred into Greek, an error occurred due to the translator's limitations. Matthew 19:24 is commonly translated as, 'It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God.' This is an obvious 'non sequitur', whereas the Aramaic manuscripts read 'rope' instead of 'camel'. Rope, of course, is much more in keeping with the imagery of a needle, and is probably what Jesus said, and what was originally recorded.

Similarly, Matthew 7:3 says, 'Why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?' And yet, in Lamsa's version the word 'splinter' appears in place of 'speck.' The organic relationship between a splinter and a plank (or beam) is obvious while speck is more nebulous. Again, Lamsa's translation remains true to the imagery being conveyed.

The ninth chapter of Daniel contains the amazing Old Testament prophecy concerning the surprisingly sudden death of the long-awaited Messiah and the subsequent destruction of Jerusalem. A portion of verse 26 in other Biblical translations states, 'The end of it shall be with a flood.' The most well written and spiritually mature approach to 'The Tribulation' and the events of 'The Revelation' that I am aware of is David Haggith's, END-TIME PROPHECIES OF THE BIBLE. But even the ordinarily clear-minded Mr. Haggith had trouble correlating this passage with known history. 'Blood covered the land like a flood', he overreaches. It comes as no surprise then that the Aramaic manuscripts do not make mention of any unknown flood. Lamsa's translation accurately reads, 'And the end thereof shall be a mass exile.'

Although there is much more evidence, these three examples should be sufficient to convince most serious Bible students that Lamsa's translation from the ancient Aramaic offers us the most trustworthy rendering of Scripture.

Finally, I'd like to elaborate on the comment of brother Ram Munjal from his good 2004, Jan. 21 review: All Bibles tell us that from the Cross, Jesus (quoting Psalm 22:1) cried out, 'My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?' (See Matthew 27:46) This verse has undoubtedly disturbed people for centuries, and no wonder - it is extremely unlikely that Jesus ever felt utterly abandoned by God while He was hanging on the Cross. The Messiah had been promised His Father's abiding Presence! Nothing happened to Jesus that He was not mentally prepared for. He told His disciples in advance what to expect : He would be mocked, spat upon, beaten, and killed, but that three days later He would rise again. (Mark 10:34) He also said to them, 'you will be scattered...and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because The Father is with Me.' (John 16:32) Was Jesus mistaken? Or is the translation inaccurate?

'Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?' (My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?) correctly appears in the Aramaic manuscripts as, 'Eli, Eli, lemana shabakthani' (My God, My God, for this I was spared [this was my destiny.]) Indeed! At different times mobs had attempted to kill Jesus, but He was always SPARED because it was His Will and His DESTINY to take mankind's sins to the Cross to be washed clean in His Blood. The Aramaic phrases are so similar that it is easy to understand how the mistake was made, but the meanings are worlds apart, and Lamsa's version is much more consistent with the Mission of The Christ. Trying to correlate the mistranslation, Christian theologians have been forced to create a flimsy dogma (Jesus being separated from God while descending into hell) in order to cover for this improbable utterance from our Lord while He was suffering on the Cross. Lamsa resolves this dilemma in a far more satisfactory manner. Furthermore, according to the Aramaic Scriptures, Psalm 22:1 doesn't read, 'Why have You forsaken Me?' in the first place, but rather, 'Why has thou let Me to live?'

There are plenty more sound arguments to support Lamsa's contention that the New Testament first appeared in the Aramaic language. You may wish to get a copy of his IDIOMS IN THE BIBLE EXPLAINED AND A KEY TO THE ORIGINAL GOSPELS and/or NEW TESTAMENT ORIGIN (Available from the Noohra Foundation - an organization I strongly disagree with on certain crucial issues.)

When in doubt, George Lamsa's translation is the one I always side with. An added bonus is that this Bible is large and heavy, and should you ever find it necessary to really whack somebody upside the head with The Word Of God, this version is sure to make quite an impression!

Most Authentic EnglishTranslation of the Holy Scriptures
By Dr. Ram Munjal
I am citing verses from the Law Of Moses, the Prophets, the Writings, The Gospels, and the Epistles to demonstrate as to why I base my faith only on this translation of the Holy Scriptures from the Ancient Eastern Text by Dr. George Lamsa. For comparison the verses from New International Version (NIV) are also cited.
[1] GENESIS 2:20
Lamsa's translation:
And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to all fowls of the air, and to all wild beasts; but for Adam there was not found a helper who was equal to him.
NIV translation:
So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found
Note the word "EQUAL" in lamsa's translation. Woman is equal to man.
[2] 1 CHRONICLES 16:42
Lamsa's translation:
And these righteous men gave thanks not with the instruments of singing, neither with the tambourines nor with timbrels nor with the curved trumpets nor with the straight trumpets nor with the cymbals, but with a pleasant mouth and with pure and perfect prayer and with righteousness and with purity to the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel.
NIV translation:
Heman and Jeduthan were responsible for the sounding of the trumpets and cymbals and for the playing of the other instruments for sacred song. The sons of Jeduthan were stationed at the gate.
Note that in NIV the verse has been chopped off.
[3] PSALM 22:1
Lamsa's translation:
My God, my God, why hast Thou let me to live?.....
NIV translation:
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me.
It needs to be noted that the NIV translation borders on blasphemy. When Lord Eshoo was on the cross, He quoted this Psalm(Matthew 27:46). God was with Him on the cross otherwise He would not have been able to endure the torture of the cross from the hands of cruel and wicked Romans. Lord Eshoo before going to the cross had told his disciples that " For behold the hour is coming, and it has now come, when you will be dispersed, every man to his own country, and you will leave me alone; and yet I am never alone because the Father is with me (JOHN 16:32)." He would never contradict Himself little later.
[4] MALACHI 3:6
Lamsa's translation:
For I am the LORD, I change not; but you sons of Jacob have not departed from your iniquities.
NIV translation:
I the LORD do not change. So you, O descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.
Note: Once again NIV translation is messed up. This verse 6 in Lamsa's translation links perfectly well with the previous verse 5 and the verse 7 that follows. NIV does not make any sense.
[5] MATTHEW 6:13
Lamsa's translation:
And do not let us enter into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory for ever and ever. Amen
NIV translation:
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
Note NIV chops off the verse. Furthermore NIV translation is pathetic. James writes: "God does not tempt any man. But every man is tempted by his own lust(James 1:13,14).
[6] LUKE 14:26
Lamsa's translation:
He who comes to Me and does not put aside his father and his mother and his brothers and his sisters and his wife and his children and even his own life can not be a disciple to me.
NIV translation:
If any one comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters, yes even his own life, he can not be My disciple.
Note the word "hate" in NIV translation. In the sermon on the mount LORD ESHOO MESHIHA said:"Do not suppose that I have come to weaken the law or the prophets; I have not come to weaken, but to fulfil.(Matthew 5:17)". Law says honor your mother and father. Use of the word "hate" in NIV translation is unfortunate and borders on trashing the Ten Commandments.
[7] ROMANS 9:13
Lamsa's translation:
As it is written, Jacob have I loved but Esau have I set aside.
NIV translation:
Just as it is written: " Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated."
Note again the improper use of the word "hate".
EPHESIANS 6:12
Lamsa's translation:
For your conflict is not only with flesh and blood, but also with the angels, and with powers, with the rulers of this world of darkness, and with the evil spirits under the heaven.
NIV translation:
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Note the word "Only" and the word "also" in Lamsa's translation is missing from NIV.
NIV translators have shown total ignorance of the spiritual warfare that I am engaged in. The book of Revelation correctly identifies the enemies of the Gospel of the Kingdom of LORD ESHOO MESHIHA. They are Satan and his three allies. The three allies are: Beast out of the sea (Ruling powers), Beast out the earth (False religion), and Babylon (Gaudy Prostitute). Lamsa's translation of the verse is right on the mark.
I can keep on reciting. But I have proved my point. NIV translation can not be trusted. King James version is no better.
Sincerely and Cordially
Dr. Ram Munjal, Ph.D.; S.S.

Lamsa's Bible: A Step Forward
By A Customer
That Jesus and his contemporaries spoke Aramaic as their primary language is not in question. This is accepted, historical fact. Therefore, it makes sense that to better understand what Jesus and others of his era said, we must look to the Aramaic language which precedes Greek texts.
What George Lamsa did several decades ago was to look to Aramaic language manuscripts to create a more enlightened translation which reflects the language of Jesus, his followers and the common people to whom He ministered, rather than the Greek language of the military and political leaders of His time who would in time crucify Him.
The Lamsa Bible is then a step forward, but still, Lamsa was apparently afraid of offending too many people with his groundbreaking version, so he relied upon the King James translation in large part for style and form, making thousands of corrections to the Bible from the Aramaic texts and applying it to the more accepted form.
The KJV reader then will not find the Lamsa Bible too shockingly different, but the careful student of scripture will detect the differences and be blessed by Lamsa's Aramaic language perspective.
One might say Lamsa translated the Aramaic Bible text on the back of the King James Version.
I have used the Lamsa version as my primary Bible in 7 years of teaching and preaching, and it has served me well, although I often use also the superb NRSV, the Good News Bible (TEV) and the Scholar's Version (Jesus Seminar) and Inclusive Language translations of the Gospel as well.
I give the Lamsa Bible 4 stars, because it is a step forward into the light of understanding the Truth of Spirit, but it is now several decades old and becoming a wee bit archaic and musty in the face of user-friendly, easy-reading but simplistic modern translations like the NIV, CEV and NLT.
It's time for a modern revision of the Lamsa Bible!

A Bundle of Complications

Groomed for high society, Rebecca Sterling now has a new mission—to help the orphans coming to Evans Grove. Yet just before she's due to return to New York, she faces two unexpected challenges. There's the tiny infant abandoned on her orphanage steps…and the big, gruff cowboy who found him.

Colton Hayes knows nothing about babies and even less about pampered socialites. But as he and Rebecca work together to watch over little Gabriel, he comes to care deeply for them both. What can a rough-and-ready cowboy offer a woman made for city living? Except, perhaps, the dream dearest to both their hearts—a family built on faith and love.

Evans Grove, Nebraska
Late May, 1875

One day. He could spare one day away from home. He owed it to the people of Evans Grove to help with the construction of the town's new orphanage. A single day wasn't much, but it was something. The orphans rescued from the clutches of Felix Baxter deserved a safe place to call home.

But still, twenty-eight-year-old Colton Hayes paused at the door as he planted his favorite black cowboy hat firmly on his head.

"Ma, Pa, you'll be okay until I get back?" He didn't like to leave them alone.

"Those poor children need the orphanage as soon as they can get it," Pa said. "You go do what you can to help."

"I'll try to make supper." Ma had her long-suffering tone down to a fine art. Not that she didn't have cause. Bearing him late in life had overtaxed her heart. From a young age, he'd done all he could to ease her burden.

"Don't worry about it, Ma. I'll make something when I get back. You two just take care of yourselves." He'd be hungry after a day of work, but he had pork chops in the icebox. He'd learned long ago to boil potatoes in their jackets to save time. "Pa, you need anything?"

"I'm fine, son." And to prove it, he pushed up from his chair.

Before he could hobble more than a step, Colton leaped forward to take the cup from his trembling hands. Since his accident three years ago, Pa lived in constant pain that made walking almost impossible.

Knowing his stupidity had caused Pa's injuries twisted Colton's insides. He silently vowed yet again to take care of him the rest of his life.

Colton filled the cup and carried it back to the table beside Pa's chair. "I've left soup on the stove. Ma, can you see that Pa gets a bowl of it?" He really should stay home and make sure they were both safe.

Ma sighed. "I 'spect I can manage, though I've been feeling poorly these past days." She pressed a hand to her chest.

Colton studied her. Did pain deepen the lines on her face?

She waved wearily. "You go ahead. We'll be fine."

"I'll be back later." Still he hesitated, torn between his parents' needs and the building project. "Seems we should help the community as much as we're able," he said, reminding himself why he'd made the commitment away from home. "After all, God spared us from the devastation of the flood." A storm in the spring had caused the nearby dam to break, flooding the town, damaging many of the homes and businesses, and causing several deaths. Then, in hopes of ensnaring more children for his child-labor schemes, Baxter had started a fire that destroyed the school. Thankfully, his attempt to implicate the local orphans so the citizens of Evans Grove would send the children to Greenville had failed. The townspeople were pulling together to rebuild. Colton owed it to them to lend a hand.

Pa settled back in his chair with a muffled groan. "God truly spared us." He lifted his hand in a half wave. "You go help out where you're needed."

Colton closed the door quietly, then turned toward town. One day to work. Then he'd be back home, taking care of his responsibilities.

He swung into the saddle and rode the few miles to town. He passed familiar homes, called a greeting to Mr. Gavin as he passed the general store. Like many of the homes and businesses in town, it still bore the mark of the high water of the flood.

He continued onward to the raw frame of the orphanage. Once it was finished, it would be a two-story structure with bedrooms upstairs for the children and staff. Rooms on the main floor would be used for daytime activity.

Strange. No one had arrived to work yet. He understood that men had volunteered and were scheduled to show up on specific days. Just as he had signed up to work today.

He studied the shell of the building. Wasn't there supposed to be a stack of lumber nearby? Bought and paid for by the generous, yet anonymous, donor funding the project? The gift had everyone talking and guessing as to who the donor might be.

It would be interesting to know who had enough money to fund two building projects—both the orphanage and the school. But unless men showed up to work, the money would benefit no one.

He slipped from his horse, tied the reins to the nearest post and continued his inspection on foot.

As far as he could tell, there'd been nothing done since his last visit to town three days ago. He scratched his head. Moreover, it appeared as if someone had tried to knock out part of the framework where the front door would be. Was there something wrong with the work? He examined the braces and could see no flaw in the construction. Strange.

He circled the building to the back and stared. Someone had left a basket in front of the doorway. Laundry, by the look of it. Who would do that? And why? This whole thing was beginning to feel wrong.

He crossed the distance and squatted by the basket. Looked like… He lifted the first item. Bedding? Small bedding. What on earth?

The laundry in the basket moved. He jerked, almost losing his balance. Sucking in air to steady his twitching nerves, he gingerly plucked at the items. A cotton flannel square and then a quilt wrapped around—

Colton stared. A baby? He jolted upright and gave the surroundings an intent stare. Where was the mother? He saw no one nearby except Mr. Gavin sweeping the sidewalk in front of his store. Colton opened his mouth to call to him and demand if he knew anything, but he was too far away.

The baby made a mewling sound.

Colton squatted by the basket again. "Who are you?" He'd never seen such a tiny human before. He didn't know much about babies—anything, really—but he suspected the infant couldn't be more than a few days old. He touched the incredibly small, pink cheek. So soft. So warm.

Who did this baby belong to? He poked his fingers around the swaddled infant, looking for clues to the young one's identity. He found a bottle full of milk, but nothing more.

Nothing except—

He examined the quilt bundled around the baby and realized that he recognized this pattern. No one made it but his grandmother. She said she'd dreamed it after Grandfather died. She called it "flowers of life." Triangles of dark fabric formed the bottom half of the diamond and then a maze of bright fabric formed the top half. He had no idea how she managed to create such a beautiful design—one that looked like flowers growing from dark soil. No one else had ever managed to duplicate the pattern accurately. She had made this quilt—and she only gave quilts to family. That meant the baby belonged to the Hayes clan. He considered the relations who lived nearby.

Cousin Amelia lived in Evans Grove, but she was in Kansas visiting her sister. Although she had put on weight lately, he'd seen no indication that she had been expecting a baby. She certainly hadn't mentioned anything to anyone. Colton might not get into town very often, but news like that would have reached him no matter what. Children were something to celebrate in Evans Grove, especially after so many had been lost to the flood. No, the child couldn't be Amelia's.

He had cousins in Ohio. Perhaps one of them had come to visit and something had happened. If Ma and Pa had been healthy, the mother might have left the baby with them instead of at the unfinished orphanage.

A fierce protectiveness filled his chest. He would take care of this little one until the parents returned. He reached into the basket, thinking to scoop the baby up, then hesitated. Wasn't there a special way to hold tiny babies? He'd heard women mention it when they handed their infants to others, but he couldn't recall their exact words. Something about holding its head. But how should he hold it? Up? Down? To the side? Was he meant to hold the baby from the head or support it from the neck? He pulled his hands back to his knees. He knew how to care for baby calves and foals. He'd seen baby kittens born, watched brand-new puppies. Once he'd even saved a nest of pink mice, only to watch them grow into troublesome rodents. But a human baby! He had no idea what to do.

Standing, he again looked around, hoping the mother had slipped away on an errand and would now be returning on hurried feet.

But only a pair of cowboys rode down the street. A wagon approached from the north side of town. Somewhere he heard a door slam. And distant voices laughing.

"Hello?"

The only answer came from the basket, a little squawk.

The baby's face wrinkled up like a prune and a thin cry came from the tiny mouth.

Colton's heart turned warm and soft. This lost or abandoned or forgotten baby was somehow connected to Colton and, as such, would receive all the care Colton could provide. Remembering the admonition to watch the head, he cupped his hands under the bundle and lifted it to his chest, hoping for the best.

"You're safe now, baby. Don't cry."

The wee face smoothed. The lips puckered into a little rosebud, and the baby opened watery blue eyes to consider Colton.

Colton's protectiveness grew fierce. Whatever had happened to this baby's mother, he would find her. In the meantime, he would protect the baby and take care of it.

At that moment, the baby screwed up its face and cried—a sound like a mournful cat. So weak and pitiful Colton wondered if something was wrong.

"Don't cry." He cradled the baby against his chest and jiggled the little bundle.

"Don't cry. Please, don't cry."

But the wails intensified. The baby sounded distraught.

What was he to do with such a tiny baby? Colton remembered the bottle and grabbed it. Stuck the nipple in the crying mouth.

The baby choked.

Colton's face turned cold. His heart forgot to beat. In his ignorance had he drowned the wee mite?

Twenty-three-year-old Rebecca Sterling reminded herself to keep a cheerful smile and a hopeful heart as she headed down the street toward the orphanage. She was the one who had received the anonymous check, so she was the one in charge of the orphanage-building project, and she was determined to make it a success.

True, she knew nothing about building, but a year ago, she had known nothing about finding homes for orphan children, either. Her assignment with the Orphan Salvation Society—a New York-based organization that rescued orphaned city children from the streets and found families for them out West—had changed that in a hurry. Now all but one of the orphaned children placed in her care had been settled with families. The last child, ten-year-old Heidi Strauss, was at her side as they crossed the street to the orphanage building site. Half a block later, Rebecca's heart sank and her smile faltered when she could see that no lumber had been delivered.

"No more wood," Heidi announced.

"So I see." No lumber. Things gone missing. Boards destroyed and made to look like an accident.

Someone didn't want her to succeed at getting the orphanage built. Rebecca fought against her feelings of frustration. They were running out of time. The specially appointed U.S. marshal would soon return with the rescued orphans who'd been forced by Baxter into virtual slave labor for unscrupulous miners and farmers all over Nebraska territory.

The children deserved more than rescue. They deserved a warm place to live where they would be welcomed and protected. She intended to see that they got it. The orphanage would be built. Somehow.

She tucked her chin toward her chest in a sign that anyone who knew her would recognize as a sign of stubbornness. Whoever was at the root of her troubles would soon learn that Rebecca Gwendolyn Sterling expected people to do as she asked.

Her chin sagged. Here in small-town Nebraska, the name Lawrence Sterling III didn't carry the weight it did back in New York. Few people here had heard of her father. Fewer knew or cared that he was a rich importer of European goods.

She again drew her chin back. She would not accept defeat.

Through the framework of the building, a dark figure lurched from side to side.

"Someone's there," Heidi whispered as she tugged on Rebecca to stop her.

Rebecca jerked to a halt and clung to Heidi's hand. Was he the one responsible for the mischief at the site? Or was he there to help?

Realizing that she was alone except for the small girl, who squeezed her hand hard enough to numb her fingers, Rebecca glanced around, but saw no one. No one to help her…but no one to aid the intruder, either. There was only one of him, after all. No reason to be all trembly inside. She'd had enough of delays. If his intention was anything but working on the building…

A horse whinnied as she and Heidi trod past him.

A cry reached her ears. A thin wail. She stopped and listened. "What is that?"

Heidi listened, too. "It sounds like a baby."

"Must be coming from an open window." She moved on until she reached the corner of the framed building, where she paused to study the man. A big man, broad at the shoulders. Something stirred within her. A sense of recognition and more—a sense of eagerness and curiosity.

Nonsense. She pushed away everything but caution and determination. Whoever he was, whatever he was up to, she had a job to do on this building. It was time everyone involved realized that she was in charge and would not relent until her job was done.

"Come along," she murmured to Heidi, who hung back, afraid of the man. Rebecca led her forward.

At that moment, the man turned.

Rebecca recognized him—Colton Hayes, a cowboy she'd seen in church, in the store, riding down the street, driving a buggy with an older man and woman she'd been informed were his parents.

Her admiration of the way he gently helped his parents from the buggy was her justification for why she'd studied him so intently. Noted his strong build, his thick black hair. The few times she'd seen him without the black cowboy hat he now wore, she'd noticed that his hair dipped in a wave. Today he wore a soft-looking blue shirt and denim trousers faded across the thighs, darker at the seams.

Surely he wasn't the one responsible for the mischief.

Not a tall, handsome man like that.

He considered her across the distance. Too far for her to see the color of his eyes, though she knew they were as green as emeralds.

Rebecca Gwendolyn Sterling, have you taken leave of your senses? Staring shamelessly at a man? What would your father say? She scolded herself in her mother's voice and words. Her mother had died seven years ago, yet Rebecca still heard her and listened to her. But that was not to say that she always followed what she knew would be her mother's advice. If she heeded her mother, she would demurely approach the man and speak quietly and gently. Perhaps ask if he needed assistance. Instead, she lifted the hem of her navy blue skirt and stepped quickly and confidently across the rutted ground. She circled the corner and approached the man. Heidi followed on her heels, trying to be invisible behind Rebecca's skirts.

Very Enjoyable Story
By Carol L.
This story is part of the Orphan Train series. It is an enjoyable tale of a kind-hearted city lady who is the chaperone of children going west on an orphan train. At the end of her journey out west, just before she is ready to return to New York, another baby orphan is abandoned on the orphanage steps. The rancher who finds the baby knows nothing about kids, but ends up having a soft spot for this one, as well as the lovely Orphan Train lady. I would recommend it to anyone who loves historical romances as I do.

The Baby Compromise
By LMN11
Colton spends his time caring for his ailing mother and his injured father, while trying to keep up with the ranch. While the idea of a wife and family appeals to him, he knows his other obligations won't permit him to marry. But when he finds a newborn baby abandoned at the under construction orphanage, Colton is determined to take the baby home and care for it, as he suspects the baby is family. How he'll find the time to care for the baby, God only knows.

Meanwhile, New York City socialite Rebecca Sterling is determined to care for the baby herself. Recently jilted by her ex fiancé, Rebecca has traveled west to oversee the construction of a new orphanage in the little town of Evans Grove. Seeing as the newborn was clearly left at the orphanage, that makes himself her responsibility. Unable to come to a consensus, Colton and Rebecca make a compromise. Rebecca, the baby, and young Heidi, another orphan in Rebecca's care, will temporarily move to Colton's ranch to care for the baby together. But once the orphanage is up and running, Rebecca will move back to New York.

But as Rebecca spends more time with Colton, she wonders if she wants to go back to New York at all. Will Cotton give her a reason to stay in Evans Grove?

Overall I really liked this book. It was a sweet romance. I also liked that the author spent a lot of time developing Heidi's character. A lot of authors would have glossed over a child character. But Heidi brought dimension to an otherwise an typical historical romance.

I did, however, struggles a bit with the plot, particularly in the beginning. This is the third book in a series, and I haven't read the previous two books. The author didn't do a very good job of explaining the first two books. But I was able to get the gist.

Overall, a nice, clean romance that I would recommend.

The Baby Compromise
By harleygirl
Groomed for high society, Rebecca Sterling now has a new mission to help the orphans coming to Evans Grove. Yet just before she's due to return to New York, she faces two unexpected challenges. There's the tiny infant abandoned on her orphanage step and the big, gruff cowboy who found him.

Colton Hayes knows nothing about babies and even less about pampered socialites. But as he and Rebecca work together to watch over little Gabriel, he comes to care deeply for them both. What can a rough and ready cowboy offer a woman made for city living? Except, perhaps, the dream dearest to both their hearts, a family built on faith and love.
