SHOCK WAVE

It's as legal to buy as bath salts, but Ivory Wave isn't for human consumption. So when a rash of deaths spreads across the Midwest, Mack Bolan has to find out who's making the lethal concoction—who's killing American teens—and shut them down permanently. But he quickly discovers that it's a powerful crime family behind the narcotic, and the mob considers it a legitimate source of income. Taking the deadly drug supply off the market will be no easy task.

With the White House telling him to back off and Stony Man Farm's hands tied, the Executioner has only one way into the organization—put himself directly in the cross fire of the two hot-blooded Mafia brothers battling for control of the family business.

Sometimes the only way to beat them isto join the war.

A little to close to criminal
By cj oakley
When Mack Bolan took off on his quest to find the origin of Ivory Wave , he stepped on a lot innocent people's toes. Like the ex-hippie who's business he wasted. NOT Normal for Mack.
He would have found a more simple and quiet way to obtain the information. Every step of the way he let the enemy know he was coming for them yet they never caught on! Come on!
At the end Mack put down Dom and Nuncio and was ready to pass Massimo.Again no way! The reading was good but sometimes confusing.

Bath Salts drug war
By David Burrows
This if one of the few Executioner series that I thought was lacking in depth. It is one that has Bolan fighting and killing people who sell Bath Salts legally. He does finally get to the manufacturers who are dealing in illegal drugs, but it seemed totally out of character to me.

Bolan kills Mafia
By Walter E. Kurtz
Mack Bolan goes back to his roots as a super vigilante by fighting the Mafia. I always liked Executioner books in which Bolan is fighting ordinary criminals rather than terrorists of foreign spies because they are more realistic. Of course, "realistic" is a relative term when it comes to Executioner novels. Although Ivory Wave might be more realistic than others in the series, it still is a paper equivalent of those cheesy straight-to-DVD action movies.

The book starts with Bolan fighting Russian gangsters. Shortly after killing them all, he gets a phone call from an old friend. The friend's daughter had taken a drug called "Ivory Wave" and died as a result. Bolan arrives in town and vows to find the source of the drug and shut down its production.

He starts in the classical way by working his way up the food chain. First he beats up local dealers and then gets to work on their suppliers. I was thinking that he will just keep going until he gets to the big boss and kills him, but this is where the story diverges.

Ivory Wave is being manufactured by a Mafia family in Cleveland. We are introduced to the family, which is run by two brothers, Dominic and Nuncio, and Nuncio's two sons. There is a conflict growing between them that eventually leads to war that will pit brother against brother and son against father.

The two stories run parallel before merging.

I was quite happy with this side story because the bad guys get exposure and even character development. If you had read other Executioner books, you will know that the chief bad guy (usually there is only one) is almost always a sociopath who does little beyond sitting in his office all the time and yelling at his underlings (occasionally killing them) and throwing things around in anger. Here, in this book, we see the bad guys interact with each other and live their own lives. Although none of them are sympathetic by any measure, they are all human in their own sick, twisted way.

Eventually Bolan arrives in Cleveland at the same time when the two Mafia brothers decide to go to all out war. Rather than to attack them outright, Bolan demonstrates cleverness and cunning (and ruthlessness) by joining forces with one of them. He gains his boss's trust and manipulates him into attacking his brother in such a way as to cause maximum number of casualties to both sides. This, of course, leads to the big, final shootout.

Although perhaps not one of the very best books in the series, I found it quite enjoyable and I recommend it.

Lost in London 1

The flyer in my hand said it was a one-week student program in London—as in the most exciting city in Europe. I needed something exciting, anything other than what was called “my life.”

Everybody has a “thing.” Some people are good at sports, or music, or are popular, or are at the bottom of the social ladder.

Except me. I didn’t have a thing. Translation? I was a positively ordinary thirteen-year-old girl who led a boring life. Consider my life’s report card:

• I lived in a regular old town without a palm tree, igloo, or palace (Wilmington, Delaware) = blah.

• I didn’t do any sports or clubs = yawn.

• I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup, ride my bike without a helmet, go to R movies, or attend boy-girl dances = lame.

• I lived next door to my school, where my dad worked = annoying.

• Worst of all, I’d never done anything exciting. When I explained this to my parents, they brought up my trip with the Girl Scouts last year. I didn’t think that should count, because it was only two nights and my mom was there. It was totally Dullsville. (I dropped out of Girl Scouts right after.)

This school-sponsored trip was like a miracle opportunity sent directly to me, Jordan Jacoby. What could be more exciting than London? (Paris, possibly, but that doesn’t matter right now.) I wanted to go to London to become worldly by traveling around that amazing city and soaking in its history and culture.

There was just one problem. Kind of a biggie. My parents.

I studied the London program information on my short walk home from school—across the football field, through a gate, along a short path, and onto the sidewalk that led to my house. My dad was a little ways behind me, walking home too.

Let me give you some advice if your parents ever consider working at your school:

Talk them out of it.

Sabotage the interview.

Recruit someone else for the job.

Do whatever it takes for them to work anywhere other than at your school. Seriously, anywhere. And if they somehow manage to get the job, beg them to change their name and pretend they don’t know you.

I love my dad, but walking to and from school with him every day, and seeing him lurk in the hallways, sucked any possible element of fun from my middle-school existence. I couldn’t so much as draw on my sneaker with a permanent marker, or talk to a boy, without getting “the look.” The you-and-I-both-know-you-shouldn’t-be-doing-that look.

Ah, London.

I wanted this trip.

“What are you reading?” Dad walked faster to catch up with me.

“About the school-sponsored trip to London this year. I really, really want to go.”

He immediately harrumphed, but I didn’t let that stop me. This was going to take persistence. And I could be seriously persistent.

The conversation about the trip went on all afternoon and into dinner. “There has got to be more to the world than Wilmington, Delaware. I’ve never done anything or gone anywhere.”

“Now, that’s just not true,” Mom said. “You went away overnight to Girl Scout camp. Remember that?”

Oh, yeah. Did I ever.

I tried: “Oh, come on. You never let me do anything fun. And it’s only five days.”

Then I went to: “We live in an American-centric society. Isn’t it important for me to broaden my horizons?” (I’d gotten that from the flyer.)

I added: “I have the assignment all planned out. It’s going to be a photo montage of sights with narration. I promise I’ll get an A, or maybe an A-minus, on it and I’ll weed all summer long to pay you back for the trip.”

Finally I went with: “It will be an experience that I will remember for the rest of my life!”

My mom talked about me staying with an old friend of hers who had a stepdaughter about my age. This made me think she was seriously considering it. Then she started talking about the dangers of a foreign city—drugs, kidnapping—and the cost of the trip. It wasn’t looking good.

Then—I don’t know what happened exactly—but at that moment, on Marsh Road in Wilmington, Delaware, a miracle occurred. They said YES!

I was going to embark on a journey called the De-bored-ification of Jordan Jacoby.

Only, I had no idea how de-bored-ified my life was about to become.

A MUST READ FOR YOUR TWEEN!
By Kelli from CT
My 10-year old daughter loved the author's earlier book, "Just Add Magic", so she had high expectations for "Lost in London." And it far exceeded them! She couldn't put the book down. She really connected with the characters and loved the London locale. The author has a great sense of humor and really connects with her audience. I highly recommend both books for tween girls!

Super Fun
By Work In Progress
I bought this book as a gift (and of course read it first) because the last C. Callaghan book I ordered (Just Add Magic) was a huge hit with the 11-year-old who received it. It's a great premise - tweens trapped in a department store -- and the fact that it happens in London quadruples the fun factor. If you want your girl to get lost in a book, Lost in London is a great one.

The Beautiful and the Damned CHAPTER ONE

Hampton Falls, NH

Two months later

The wig was cheap. It made her head itch. A synthetic material, poorly made. Cyn had found it in the donations bin of a Goodwill thrift store. Probably somebody’s Saturday-night castoff. But it made her feel better to have it on. Protected.

“Brunette tonight, huh?” One of the cooks leaned over the disposal in the sink, trying to fish something out of it. “Thought blondes have more fun.”

“They do, Lenny.” Cyn opened another button on the top of her waitress uniform. “Get better tips, too. Guess I’ll just have to use my other charms.”

“Don’t forget who takes care of you around here.”

Tucking her pad into her waist pocket, Cyn blew him a kiss before heading to the counter. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Yeah, yeah. Just remember when you bring back all that green that I’m the guy who does the dishes for you at the end of your shift.” Cyn waved two fingers dismissively, like she couldn’t hear what he was saying. “And snaked your ring from the drain last week when you dropped it!” he shouted after her.

Cyn glanced down at the knotted gold ring on her right hand, rubbing it with her thumb. But she didn’t respond.

“Don’t know how that girl does it,” Lenny muttered to himself. “I swear she bewitches those customers or something.” He plunged his hand one last time into the sink and pulled out a bent spoon before adding it to the pile in the box by the back door.

“Order up,” Marv called from the kitchen pass-through. He sat a plate full of steamed clams on the counter and moved to the next ticket, wiping a greasy hand on his once-white apron.

Cyn deliberately ignored him, returning an empty coffeepot to the coffeemaker. The diner was half-full, but she liked to take her time.

“Yo, Cynsation.” Marv rapped on a dented silver bell. “I said, order up.”

“Calm down, Marv. I heard you.” She rolled her eyes and grabbed the plate. “It’s under the warmer. It’ll be fine.”

Dropping the food at table nine, Cyn noticed the empty mug in front of a burly man sitting on a bar stool at the counter. “Do you need a fill-up?” she stopped to ask.

He paused, half-eaten ham sandwich dripping mayo and bits of lettuce down his shirt. “If you’re doing the filling, sweetheart, then I’m doing the taking. But we could rearrange those positions if you’d be so inclined. My truck’s parked right outside.” He flashed a smile of rotted teeth and half-chewed food particles at her.

Cyn leaned in, making sure that the barely buttoned uniform she wore gaped in the front. “Inclined? I do love a man who uses big words.”

The trucker ogled her hopefully. “You do? ’Cuz I know a million of  ’em.”

“Well, I just want you to remember one little word. . . .” Eyes wide, pupils flaring, she said, “Tip.”

~  ~  ~

As soon as the trucker was gone Cyn pocketed his seventy-five percent tip and scanned the dining room, judging the beverage-fulfillment needs of her customers. Table three was a guzzler: he’d already gone through two refills before his meal had even arrived. But tables four and five were moving at a slower pace.

Marv lifted a hand to ring the bell again, and she fixed him with a steely glare. Throwing both hands up in the air, he slowly backed off and retreated to the kitchen.

But before Cyn could grab the order that was waiting, a blast of chilly air hit her from behind. October in New Hampshire was cold—colder than the idiot who was currently holding the door open for longer than was necessary must have realized.

She turned to watch him come in. Stamping his feet and blowing on his hands, he looked like a glossy-magazine-styled, twenty-something wannabe hipster. Dark hair artfully tousled, with a gray scarf draped carefully around the top of a fitted jacket.

Cyn dismissed him without a second thought.

The door blasted open again, and this time a teenager came in. Young, blond, and full of spoiled-brat swagger. Cyn recognized him right away. Stephen Grant. All hands and no manners. He thought his daddy’s money could buy him whatever, and whoever, he wanted.

She didn’t like the attitude, but she loved making him spend some of that money on her.

Turning back to the still-steaming plate, she checked the ticket and then dropped the food off at table four. The hipster took table seven. Right next to the back exit.

Stephen sauntered up to the counter and made a show of flipping through the menu even though it was plain to see that what he really wanted wasn’t on it. He cast a calculating look at Cyn, then motioned her over. “When are you going to let me sweep you out of here?”

“Are you insinuating that I’m in need of rescuing?” Cyn flipped over her pad to a fresh sheet and clicked the end of her pen open.

“Yeah. And I can be your Prince Charming. Like the fairy tale.”

“Baby, if this was a fairy tale, I’d be more interested in marrying your father and becoming a queen instead of playing princess to a punk like you.” She leaned in and whispered, “He’s the one with all the money, after all. . . .”

It probably wasn’t the smartest thing to say, but he just pissed her off in all the wrong ways. With his slick arrogance and give-me-what-I-want attitude.

Flushed red with anger, Stephen slammed the menu down. “I want a tuna on rye with a side of pickles,” he said coldly.

“Coming right up.”

“Bitch.”

She could feel his gaze burning through her back as she walked away. Mentally sighing, Cyn reached up to straighten the back of her wig and kept moving to table seven. “What can I get for you?” she asked, all bright smiles and eager eyes.

The customers never had any idea just how much of an act it all was.

“Coffee. Black,” Hipster said.

“You got it.”

She told Marv about the tuna ticket, and by the time she’d filled Hipster’s coffee, her order was ready. As she picked up Stephen’s plate, Cyn wished she had opened another button. Sometimes that was easier than dealing with him.

Sliding the plate onto the table, she said, “Enjoy your meal.” She was turning to walk away when his voice stopped her.

“I asked for my bread to be lightly toasted.”

“No, you didn’t.”

“Well, that’s the way I want it.”

Cyn gave him an irritated look. “Why don’t you just eat your food the way it is and stop bothering me? That’s not too much to ask, now, is it?”

He seemed to think about it for a moment. Then he said, “Yes. It is.”

“Excuse me?”

“I want my sandwich remade, and this time it should be lightly toasted.”

Cyn reached for the plate. “Sure,” she said through gritted teeth. “I’ll get that fixed right up for you.”

Marv was in the middle of slopping dirty water onto the floor and pushing it around with a wet mop when Cyn entered the kitchen. He eyed up what she had in her hands and shook his head. “Nope. Sorry. I can’t remake anything. Cleaning duty.”

“S’okay, Marv. I got it.” Scraping the plate clean into the trash, Cyn grabbed a new one from the stack on the prep counter. Then she put two pieces of bread into the toaster and went to the fridge to get a fresh pack of tuna, some mayonnaise and relish, and the jar of sliced pickles. When the toaster popped, Cyn carefully inspected the bread to make sure it was lightly toasted before putting it all together. New sandwich in hand, she walked out of the kitchen to deliver it to her customer.

The guzzler at table three was frantically trying to wave her down again as she passed, but she just smiled at him and held up one finger. He could wait another minute or two. It wasn’t like her tip would suffer for it.

“Here you go.” Cyn plunked the plate down in front of Stephen. “One freshly made tuna on rye, lightly toasted, with pickles on the side.”

He looked up from his phone, feigning surprise at her arrival, and inspected the sandwich. Cyn waited for him to deem it good enough, but he didn’t say a word.

Until she walked away again.

“Um, miss?”

Oh, he’s going to leave me a huge tip for this.

Cyn pivoted back around to face him. “What is it now?”

“I’ve decided I don’t want the pickles.”

“That’s what you have a napkin for. Use it.”

His face cracked a little bit. That smooth, fake smile dissolved into a sneer. “I don’t want them sitting on the napkin next to me. I don’t want them sitting anywhere near me.”

This was moving beyond big-tip territory into straight-up petition-for-sainthood territory.

“Fine.” Cyn picked up one of the pickles. In two crunches, it was gone. She picked up the second one and devoured it just as quickly. Taking a moment to lick her lips, she ran her tongue over her teeth and smiled widely. “Problem solved.”

Stephen looked down at his plate and then back to her. “What about the juice?”

Reaching down, she slowly ran her finger over the left-behind pickle juice and brought it to her lips. He watched her with wide eyes, never taking them off her mouth as she sucked her finger clean.

Cyn knew she shouldn’t be baiting him like this—it was only going to give him the wrong idea.

And she was right.

With one smooth motion, Stephen gripped her wrist. Jerking her toward him.

Cyn had to consciously unclench her teeth to spit out the words “Let go of me. Now.”

Stephen let go all right. But only because the hipster from table seven was suddenly there, introducing Stephen’s face to the counter.

“Be nice,” Hipster said.

Stephen made a choking noise as his fingers fell away from Cyn’s wrist. “What the fuck, man? Let me up.”

All eyes in the diner were on them now. Even with her ever-rotating assortment of wigs, Cyn tried to stick to normal hair colors and bland clothes. The idea was not to get noticed. So much for not making a scene.

“Thanks,” Cyn said quietly as the guy let up on Stephen’s face. “Just a misunderstanding.”

Stephen stood up and kicked the nearest stool out of his way. “I’m not paying for that,” he sneered, gesturing to the plate. “And you can expect a call from my dad’s lawyer. Maybe even the cops,” he said to the hipster.

Cyn froze when she saw him size Stephen up and then reach inside his jacket, exposing the gun that was tucked into a side holster there.

“No need.” He pulled out a badge and flashed it. “Officer Declan Thomas. I’m with the Sleepy Hollow Police Department.”

Short but Very Entertaining
By Pacey1927
The Hollows trilogy was one of my favorite YA series ever. And yet for some reason I didn't know about "The Beautiful and the Damned" until after it had been released. Then when I realized it was a companion novel to the Hollows I ordered it immediately. I am so very glad I read this. I read it over a very busy weekend and still managed to finish it in two days. It is a short book; it comes in at a mere 266 pages. Still the book is a complete, exciting story with likeable characters and a strong plot. The story is about Cyn who is on the run and in disguise after she blackef out and woke up next to her murdered boyfriend Hunter. When a cop from Sleepy Hollow (her hometown) comes sniffing around Cyn knows she is in trouble. She seeks the support and wisdom of Father Montgomery. Father Montgomery lives with a young man named Avian who also has his own secrets. The book really does just fly by and because it is such a short story I don't want to give too much away.

One thing I will say is the plot is completely resolved and I think this book is meant to stand alone however, I still see lots of potential for Cyn and Avian should Verday decide to write another book based on these characters. The tension and sass between these two is fantastic and I love their connection. The last book of the Hollows trilogy ended with our heroine Abbey in very unexpected circumstances and many of the fans weren't happy with the ending of that series. I was ok with it but it truly was unexpected. Verday uses as scene toward the end of this companion novel to reintroduce Abbey and to assure us that Abbey and her love Caspian are still happy and in love. They are ok with the place they are in so the fans should be too. I think it was such a nice addition to the book and I applaud the author for including them, even briefly.

I can't think of a negative thing to say about "The Beautiful and the Damned" except that the cost of the hardback is a little bit high, but I found it worth the cost and if you need to watch for deals or buy the ebook because it was just such a enjoyable read. If you never had a chance to read the Hollow series, you are missing out.

Dark, Thrilling, and Romantic
By Farrah
Dark, thrilling, romantic, and a wonderful YA paranormal romance read! The Beautiful and the Damned was a wonderful book and I really enjoyed reading it.

Confession time: I didn't realize this book was a spin off from another series until right before I started reading it. I just requested it, thinking it sounded like a pretty awesome read. And, when I found out it was a spin off, I was worried that I might end up confused while reading this, since I didn't read the original series. But, the author did a great job explaining the backstory so that I, having not read the first series, could understand without weighing down the story. And I ended up liking this book so much that I want to go back and read the original series, The Hollow. For fans of The Hollow series and new readers to this world, The Beautiful and the Damned is a book not to be missed.

Cyn was a strong heroine. She was one tough chick, to go through everything she has been through and still fight to survive. And she was a very likable character. I thought she was great. I really liked her.

Avian was also wonderful. He was a delightfully complex character. A half demon, half angel, complete with the horns and the wings. And he has his own brand of justice that he has no problem doling out to the evil supernatural creatures. He was strong and determined to do what he believed was right. And, his loyalty to his loved ones was always assured. When he wanted to, he could be quite sweet, though he hasn't had much practice at it. Still, I thought he was wonderful and I adored him. He was a great character.

The romance was steadily developed. It took a while for Cyn and Avian to trust each other first, considering the fact that neither of them have much practice in trusting others. And I like that it was realistic in the way the romance developed. I thought these two were sweet together. I haven't heard about a sequel yet, but I hope to see how their story continues.

The plot was okay. It sdragged a little in the beginning, for about the first half. But, once we get past that slow start, things speed up and I was hooked from there. There were thrills, secrets, surprises, and near death danger. I really enjoyed the story and the ending has me curious to find out what happens to these two next. Hopefully, we'll get news of a sequel soon.

The Beautiful and the Damned was a darkly brilliant YA paranormal romance. I really enjoyed reading this fantastic book. For fans of The Hollow series, I have no doubt you won't be disappointed. For readers new to this world, this is a book you'll want to check out.

Gothic Fairy Tale
By Pamela M. Emanuel
Who cares that this is "YA" - it's a good story. The characters are well developed and you end up caring what happens to them. There's a solid mystery. And the book relates very nicely to the world of THE HOLLOWS trilogy, with enough of a back-story to make sense, but not so much that it's a re-hash.

Cyn was an interesting character in the trilogy, so it's great to find out more about her. There was enough 'different' about her that I'd wondered if she was completely human. Well, now I know.

Thirteen struggles with conflicting sides of himself, but there's nothing emo about it. He's practical, but pretty much a loner. And the reasons why all make sense.

It's not necessary to have read the trilogy to enjoy this book, but it will enrich the experience. There were a few "Ah-HA!!" moments here.

Good story, excellent writer, well worth the read =)

Aunty Lee's Delights: A Singaporean Mystery, by Ovidia Yu

This delectable and witty mystery introduces Rosie "Aunty" Lee, feisty widow, amateur sleuth, and proprietor of Singapore's best-loved home-cooking restaurant

After losing her husband, Rosie Lee could have become one of Singapore's "tai tai," an idle rich lady. Instead she is building a culinary empire from her restaurant, Aunty Lee's Delights, where spicy Singaporean meals are graciously served to locals and tourists alike. But when a body is found in one of Singapore's tourist havens and one of her guests fails to show at a dinner party, Aunty Lee knows that the two events are likely connected.

The murder and disappearance throws together Aunty Lee's henpecked stepson, Mark, his social-climbing wife, Selina, a gay couple whose love is still illegal in Singapore, and an elderly Australian tourist couple whose visit may mask a deeper purpose. Investigating the murder are Police Commissioner Raja and Senior Staff Sergeant Salim, who quickly discover that Aunty Lee's sharp nose for intrigue can sniff out clues that elude law enforcers.

Wise, witty, and charming, Aunty Lee's Delights is a spicy mystery about love, friendship, and food in Singapore, where money flows freely and people of many religions and ethnicities coexist peacefully, but where tensions lurk just below the surface, sometimes with deadly consequences.

“Engaging . . . Fans of Alexander McCall Smith’s No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series will find a lot to like.” (Publishers Weekly)

“This delightfully anachronistic series debut from playwright and occasional novelist Yu (Miss Moorthy Investigates, 2012, etc.) boasts buoyant prose and a colorful cast, led by the lovably unstoppable sleuth herself.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Nostalgia struck Mitch Ryder with unexpected force as he drove the final miles toward home. He'd been out of the country and might have continued to stay away longer except his father had issued his fourth edict—more emphatic than previous ones—to get home or else. The Ryders were cattlemen, having ranched in this particular area of Northern California since the gold rush. Mitch was expected to pull his own weight in the family business, something he hadn't done for three years now.

As he drove, Mitch drew a deep breath, letting the heat of midsummer fill his lungs, savoring the magnificent view. The landscape changed with almost every mile—except for the spectacular sight of Gold Ridge Mountain, which was a constant, the centerpiece. The Red Valley surrounding it could be flat endless acres of hay or low grassy hills or orchards, all of it beautiful in its own way, but Gold Ridge Mountain dominated from every vantage point.

Nerves grabbed at Mitch as he neared the road leading to Ryder Ranch, gripped so hard he didn't make the turn but kept going. Twenty miles later, his gut finally unclenched, just before his truck coughed and lurched. "Are you trying to tell me something, Lulu?" he asked his prized old vehicle as she smoothed out. "I shouldn't have driven past the homestead?"

Mitch was only half kidding. He believed in omens. As a man who dealt with the realities every day of animals and often unforgiving land and weather, it probably seemed fanciful, but he'd learned to pay attention to his instincts, even if it was for something mechanical.

Like now. His truck coughed harder and lurched farther, signs of imminent death. He spotted the mailbox and private driveway of John "Barney" Barnard and turned in. Then Lulu died.

He checked his cell phone. No service.

Mitch didn't waste energy getting angry. He'd been asking a lot of the old girl to be in top shape after three years of neglect.

He started walking. The land looked different, less abundant, not the well-tended orchard it had always been. Barney's small, weathered house was blocked from view until Mitch got much closer, where the property looked better maintained, less of a jungle. Berry bushes stretched in orderly rows, and raised boxes held thriving plants, although the greenhouse was a dilapidated mess. Chickens pecked at the ground, ignoring him.

What had happened here? Barney had always been— The front door opened, and out stepped a woman—maybe five-five, curvy, with long, blond hair pulled into a ponytail. Younger than him, he figured, but not by much.

"It's about time," she said, plunking her fists on her hips. "Did you get lost? Or go on a binge?"

"Um, no, ma'am," Mitch said, entertained. He wondered who she'd mistaken him for.

"You were supposed to be here yesterday. That's what you promised on the phone. Look around. You can see how much work there is to be done."

Mitch swept his hat off and brushed it against his thigh as he considered her. She looked anxious, and sounded desperate.

"Well?" she asked. "Are you going to take the job? Room and board, just like we discussed, and a small salary. I can't do more than that."

His whole body relaxed as he settled his hat back on his head and moved a little nearer to the house. Mitch took her offer as an omen and went with it. She needed a handyman, apparently, and he'd just realized he could use a little adjustment time himself before going home. Whatever his father wanted was not something he was anxious to learn. "I keep my word, ma'am."

"Please don't call me ma'am. It makes me feel old."

He'd gotten close enough that he could see she had eyes the color of the moss that grew on rocks by the stream he'd played in as a boy, a dark, rich green with bits of gold—and annoyance—giving them some glitter. "What should I call you?"

"Annie. Annie Barnard." She stuck out her hand.

Mitch noted the dirt under her fingernails, the scrapes and scratches along her arms and hands. No wedding ring. He took a second, surreptitious, appreciative glimpse at her body. She would be a generous handful, that was for sure. He happened to like generous handfuls. A lot.

"Mom?"

"Come on out and meet.. I'm sorry. I don't know your name."

"Mitch." He hesitated, waiting to see if she reacted to it. The Ryder family, generations of cattlemen, was well-known, but Mitch had been gone a long time, and this woman was a newcomer. When she didn't ask for his last name, he offered his hand to the boy standing beside her.

"This is Austin," she said. "He's ten. He's a great help."

The boy grinned, eyes the color of his mother's lighting up just like hers, his hair a shade darker blond and buzz-cut.

"Are you hungry?" Annie asked. "We were just sitting down to lunch."

"I could use a little something, thanks."

"Where's your gear?"

He hitched a thumb toward the road. "My truck broke down just as I arrived."

They entered the clean, cared-for house. Mitch hadn't been inside for years, but it looked pretty much the same as he remembered. Old, threadbare furnishings and rag rugs filled the space. Maybe the curtains were new. Framed photos scattered about were her own, but nothing else had her stamp on it.

"I'd like to wash up first," he said.

"Second door on the right."

He nodded his thanks and headed in that direction, wondering how any woman hired a guy off the street like that, without even knowing his full name, offering him a room in her house, trusting him around her son—and herself.

But then, he'd never been as desperate as she seemed to be. Maybe he would do all sorts of things not in the usual way if he found himself in the same straits.

He could give her a few days' help, give himself time to feel at home again. Win-win, he figured.

Annie Barnard let out a calming breath as she ladled chili into a bowl for the man, Mitch. No last name, apparently. It was fine with her. He'd come recommended, and they'd agreed she would pay him in cash anyway. What was one more risk?

"Did you run a background check on him, Mom?" Austin whispered.

Her ten-year-old knew way too much about the scary parts of life, Annie thought. "I'm a good judge of character, honey." The man spoke well, wore clean clothes, was freshly shaven. His dark brown hair had been professionally cut. And those brilliant blue eyes just plain ol' looked honest.

Most important, she needed help. Desperately. Right now. Even if it came from a one-named drifter with an unreliable truck and a strong, powerful body. He looked like he could manage the heavy lifting around her little farm.

Annie closed her eyes for a moment. She could not fail at this. She needed to be successful—for herself, but especially for Austin. He was entitled to a stable home and good role models, more than she'd ever had. She'd grown up in a family where people didn't live in houses long enough to establish a home or keep jobs long enough to become a career. She wanted roots for herself and her son. And she loved her ramshackle farm.

Mitch took a seat where she'd set the bowl. She passed him a basket with saltine crackers. The meal wasn't fancy, but it was filling. Soon they would have fresh vegetables from their garden. Almost everything she'd canned or frozen from last year's slim crop was gone. They ate a lot of protein-rich beans.

"This is great," Mitch said. "Good and spicy."

"Thanks. We have it a lot."

"A whole lot," Austin added. "Sometimes she mixes spaghetti into it. I like that."

"Sounds tasty," Mitch said. "What's first on your list of chores, Annie?"

"I bought a new high tunnel greenhouse, so the old one needs to be disposed of. We can pile it somewhere until we can get rid of it."

"All right. Mind if I push my truck closer to the house first? I'm hoping I can fix what's wrong with it myself."

"I've got a tractor you can use to pull it. You can put it in the shed, out of the weather, if you want."

"That'd be great, thanks," Mitch said. "How long have you owned this place?"

"My ex-husband inherited it from his uncle two years ago. We decided to give it a try. He didn't take to being a grower, but I did." The truth was she'd fallen in love with the farm and out of love with him. And he'd fallen out of love with both.

"I'm going to visit him in San Diego before school starts," Austin said. "My first airplane ride. You ever been on a plane, Mr. Mitch?"

"Just recently, in fact. I was working at a cattle ranch in Argentina. Do you know where that is?"

"No. Can we look it up on the internet?"

"We can do that."

"Was it fun?"

"Yes, and hard work."

"You can question Mitch after supper, Austin. For now we need to get to work."

That brought an end to the conversation. Soon after, they went outside. Annie drove the tractor as Mitch and Austin walked alongside.

"Wow! Cool truck!" Austin said, running to it. "I've never seen anything like that."

"Her name is Lulu and she's a 1954 Chevy," Mitch said. "She belonged to my grandfather. He gave her to me on my sixteenth birthday, so I've had her a long time."

"She looks good."

"I love this old girl. I've taken care of her." He ran a hand over her fender affectionately. "Unfortunately she's been sitting in someone's garage for three years while I was gone."

Annie wondered what that large, competent hand would feel like against her own skin. When she'd first spotted him from her kitchen window as he walked toward her house, she'd been worried. She couldn't see his face, just the cowboy hat, solid belt buckle, tight jeans and boots—the whole cowboy thing. She'd been ready to send him on his way. She needed help, but she didn't need anyone that good-looking, that tempting. Then he'd spoken respectfully and intelligently, including to Austin, and his appeal increased in a different way.

"Lulu's got five windows," Austin said as Mitch hooked up the tow chain from the tractor to the truck. "I've never seen that before. She kinda needs a paint job."

"Maybe someday I'll splurge for one. I'm fond of her flaws, though. I always think about my granddad when I drive her. Annie, would you like to steer the tractor or the truck?"

"I'll take the truck. I've never pulled anything that big." She hopped inside the spotless vehicle, noted a large duffel bag on the floorboard. He'd been gone a long time. Were these his sole possessions?

Mitch came up to the driver's window. "Put 'er in Neutral, would you?"

"Does the seat move up? I can't reach the clutch."

He opened the door, found a lever and held it while she slid the whole split-bench seat forward. He smelled good. Clean. Not like aftershave, but like a breath of fresh air among the farm smells.

"Where's Neutral?" she asked, feeling ridiculous, but the gear knob wasn't etched with a diagram.

"Step on the clutch. Excuse me." He reached across her lap and wiggled the gearshift. "That's it. Just keep her true and steady. I'll do the work."

It took him a couple of seconds to take his arm away. Her thighs were on fire where he touched them. No man had laid a hand on her for a very long time. Now this sexy stranger was going to be living in her house, sleeping in the room next to hers, using the same bathroom.

He shut the truck door and jogged up to the tractor, where Austin was sitting, already forming an attachment to the man. "You allowed to drive?" Annie heard Mitch ask her son.

He shook his head. If Austin said anything, Annie couldn't hear it. It'd been a bone of contention between them. He thought he was old enough. Maybe he was. Maybe she babied him too much, overprotected him. Farm life was different for kids. Several of his friends drove tractors already.

But Austin was likely the only child she would have, because she sure wasn't getting married ever again, so she probably clung to him too much. She would only have him for eight more years before he was a man, and she'd pretty much been mother and father to him since her ex left. If Austin really did get to fly to San Diego to visit his dad, Annie would be amazed, because he made a lot of promises he never kept.

At least Mitch didn't interfere. He told Austin to slide over, then squeezed himself next to her son. After the first jerk to get the chain taut, it was a smooth, slow ride into the shed. She wondered if the truck really could be fixed. How did he get parts for a nearly sixty-year-old vehicle?

"Is this home for you? The Red Valley?" she asked him as he crouched to unhook the chains from his truck. Austin had taken off with his dog, an Australian shepherd named Bo, who loved to chase the chickens, satisfying his herding instincts.

"Yep." Mitch moved to the tractor. Her gaze dropped to his rear as he crouched down again.

She could stare at that fine feature all day. The rest of him, too. Broad shoulders, narrow waist, slim hips. All man. She deliberately looked away. "Why were you in Argentina?"

"For work."

Great. Now he'd decided to act more like a cowboy and go almost silent. "Cattle, you said."

"The opportunity came up. I went."

"Is your family still living in the area?"

"Yep. We're not estranged. I'm just kinda independent."

"Stubborn, you mean?"

He smiled at that as he stood, chains in hand. Using his wrist he tilted his hat back a little. His teeth were white and straight, his lips tempting. "Some have said so."

"So, you've worked cattle. Have you farmed?"

"I've picked up a lot of life skills along the way. I'm thirty-six, in case you're wondering."

"I'm thirty. In case you were."

He nodded but didn't comment. No flattery. No, "you sure don't look your age" compliment. Did she look older? Worn-out? Technically she should, since she was tuckered out from stringing her little farm along, hoping to turn it into a thriving enterprise again, needing to make enough money to live on with a few more comforts than they had now, which were pretty much nonexistent.

Mitch reached into the truck. "If I could stow my gear, I'll get started on the old greenhouse."

"I'll show you which room is yours," she said, walking beside him. "Austin, grab some gloves so you can help with the demo work. We'll be right back."

Annie led the way down the narrow hallway, pointing out Austin's room and her own, then Mitch's. It was beyond sparse, containing only a double bed, a dresser and a lamp.

"It's not much," she said, no apology in her voice.

"It's fine. Don't need more'n this. Thanks." He tossed his duffel on the floor next to the bed.

She moved into the doorway, blocking his exit. He cocked his head. His mouth curled up on one side.

"Ma'am?" he said politely, pointedly, his eyes taking on some sparkle.

"I'll be needing you to dump the contents of your bag onto your bed."

The smile left his face. He crossed his arms. "That would be an invasion of my privacy."

She moved into the room, shutting the door behind her in case Austin came flying in. "No. This would be your background check."

Love Mitch and Annie!!
By B. Ferris
What a wonderful love story - Mitch and Annie are special H/h. Ms Crosby has created some of her best H/h IMHO

Mitch belongs to one of the local ranching families, organic beef, he knows he is loved but has been to Argentina for the last 3 years and really needs to get home and pull his weight. He's had some upsets in his life as well as his father just doesn't understand he wants to be a partner in the ranch.

Annie hasn't had the backup family that Mitch has. Her parents are tumbling weeds, always moving to take a new job, Annie's ex-husband, another tumbling weed, had inherited the farm and wanted to sell it but in their divorce she did get the farm. It's not much but Annie wants to make a life with their 10 year old son Austin. Annie wants to be an organic farmer but it's hard with just her little boy to help.

Annie thought the man was the handyman she was told she could hire when Mitch comes up her drive. He went along with her after looking around and could see she really needs someone.

It's sexual attraction right away but both try to keep it under their own hat! Mitch knows he isn't truthful with her and she doesn't want to get involved with her boy in the house. Austin takes to Mitch right away though.

This is their love story and it's a good one! All the characters are written well and the organic farming information is interesting. Austin is probably one of best child characters in any book I've read-a true 10 year old. I'm looking forward to the rest of RED VALLEY RANCHERS series.

terrific contemporary ranch romance

The Cowboy's Return
Susan Crosby
Harlequin Special Edition, May 21 2013, $4.99
ISBN: 9780373657483

Mitch Ryder has been away from his family ranch in Red Valley, California for three mostly out of country years. His father demanded he come home so after ignoring three previous orders, Mitch returns to Northern California, but he drives past the Ryder Ranch delaying seeing his family a little longer.

When his truck Lulu dies near Barney Barnard's spread, he walks to the house only to have a woman accost him for being late. Instead of going home, he takes a job on a neighbor's farm; but conceals from his employer single mom Annie Barnard who his family is. His work is top rate and her attraction powerful, but his patient tender treatment of her ten year old son Austin makes him perfect. That is until she learns he is the prodigal son of the family trying to buy her farm.

The first Red Valley ranch romance is a terrific contemporary due to the triangle dynamics between the fully developed characters (including Austin). The Cowboy's Return is a wonderful family drama as a lie of omission affirms what Walter Scott said: "Oh what a tangled web we weave, When first we practice to deceive"; especially when the heart becomes involved.

The Cowboy's Return
By Mary E. Rickert
Loved reading the book. Being part of a ranching operation myself, it was nice to read about ranching and Susan Crosby did a good job portraying it accurately. I would recommend this book to others and am looking forward to the rest of her series.
