Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence, by Daniel Goleman

In Focus, Psychologist and journalist Daniel Goleman, author of the #1 international bestseller Emotional Intelligence, offers a groundbreaking look at today’s scarcest resource and the secret to high performance and fulfillment: attention.

Combining cutting-edge research with practical findings, Focus delves into the science of attention in all its varieties, presenting a long overdue discussion of this little-noticed and under-rated mental asset. In an era of unstoppable distractions, Goleman persuasively argues that now more than ever we must learn to sharpen focus if we are to survive in a complex world.

Goleman boils down attention research into a threesome: inner, other, and outer focus. Drawing on rich case studies from fields as diverse as competitive sports, education, the arts, and business, he shows why high-achievers need all three kinds of focus, and explains how those who rely on Smart Practices—mindfulness meditation, focused preparation and recovery, positive emotions and connections, and mental “prosthetics” that help them improve habits, add new skills, and sustain greatness—excel while others do not.

From Booklist
Attention is a “little-noticed and underrated mental asset,” sorely tested among modern distractions but essential to success in work, play, relationships, and self-awareness, asserts Goleman, psychologist, journalist, and author of Emotional Intelligence (1995). In fact, the ability to focus, more than IQ or social background, is the key to performance and success. Neuroscience, case studies, and personal experience contribute to Goleman’s exploration of focus, which includes concentration, selective attention, open awareness, self-awareness, empathy, and systems awareness. He breaks them down to inner, other, and outer focus. Among examples of the significance of focus: a doctor’s ability to shut down emotions to focus on gory medical procedures; an epidemiologist’s attention to patterns and systems to track the human connections that lead to global pandemics; and a gamer’s focus on spatial perception, decision making, and ability to track objects. In commerce, education, sports, and personal life, Goleman offers concepts and techniques, including mindfulness and meditation, to train ourselves to be more focused, exercising those areas of the brain involved in focusing attention. An engaging, wide-ranging look at attention and intelligence. --Vanessa Bush

From the Back Cover

The author of the international bestseller Emotional Intelligence returns with a groundbreaking look at today's scarcest resource and the secret to high performance and fulfillment: attention.

For more than two decades, psychologist and journalist Daniel Goleman has been scouting the leading edge of the human sciences for what's new, surprising, and important. In Focus, he delves into the science of attention in all its varieties, presenting a long-overdue discussion of this little-noticed and underrated mental asset that matters enormously for how we navigate life. Attention works much like a muscle: use it poorly and it can wither; work it well and it grows. In an era of unstoppable distractions, Goleman persuasively argues that now more than ever we must learn to sharpen focus if we are to contend with, let alone thrive, in a complex world.

A surprisingly unfocused book about focus
By Mark P. McDonald
Daniel Goleman's writings about emotional intelligence (EQ) have become a central element of human resource and leadership development. That earlier work, its importance and wide scale adoption raised the bar for this book -- Focus. A bar that Goleman misses, not for the lack of ideas, but for the surprisingly disjointed approach and arguments of his chapters. Its a four star book - worth reading if you have the time, but its ok if you miss this one particularly if you have read other books about the brain, attention or social science. Here is why:

This book covers ground that others have already written about and explained. From the Stamford Marshmallow study to discussions about how the internet is rotting your brain, Goleman breaks little new ground nor offers really new advice or insight. If you have read other books about these subjects than take a pass as Goleman is late to the game.

There is little in the way of an actionable idea or framework in focus, beyond talking about the way the brain works top down or bottom-up. Unlike EQ, there is not simple way to practice or adoption. Sorry but there is no focus quotient or FQ -- probably for good reason -- but this is a major gap.

The overall book's organizations is more of a collection separate essays -- a compendium rather than a book which require great focus.

Sorry, this is a book that is worth reading, but not one worth putting to the top of your list -- like EQ

Out Of Focus
By Big Data Paramedic
The book is well written with every chapter peppered with amusing examples and stories making it an interesting read. Most of us will agree that we are deluged by interruptions and distractions every step of the way. Be it the Email, or IM or text. Multiply by a factor of ten or hundred to see the interruptions a teenager faces. If any one had any doubt about the impact it is having on each one of us and the society as a whole, the book settles the issue.

But wait, how do I increase my focus ?

Do I do Yoga? . How do I effectively increase my focus while juggling between office work, Kids , pickup and drop off at school, Homework, Baseball,Watching NBA, America's Got Talent, shopping for Milk . Yes, superficial advice in the book like "walk in the nature" are good but they are not silver bullets. (Smart games > oh yeah, my kid will love it to improve Focus as he spends hours on it) The entire book reflects one side of the coin with no real solutions to improve focus. There are chapters on "Well focused Leader" .. It is a fact that the leaders get all the help, best training programs with or without reading the book...It is a common man like you and me who needs help .

The book would be a 4 star if it was written by anyone other than Goleman, but the benchmark set by him for himself in Emotional Intelligence: 10th Anniversary Edition makes me give this book three stars. Well, don't be disappointed. Do yourself a favor by reading other master pieces like Thinking, Fast and Slow and of course, the all time great The Road Less Traveled, Timeless Edition: A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth.

Informative, but lacks focus
By Aretae
I've been studying the topic of focus rather intently recently, trying to find new thinking in the area. I've read Pomodoro technique, Eat That Frog, was working on GTD, and so Goleman's book arriving just at the right time was a lovely surprise. The book starts with relatively laser-like focus on the eponymous title of the book. But after four or five chapters he drifts away. I loved the first section of the book. Really well done. But I came looking for a book on the topic of focus, and I found a book that riffed on several topics of interest to Goleman, many individually fascinating, but only peripherally related to the central idea of the book. In some books, that is a perfectly acceptable approach. With a book titled "Focus", that seems inexcusable.

I loved some other parts of the book. He talks better than I've ever heard someone talk about the 4-sigma empaths. He points out the limitations in the 10,000 hour rule around practice, and discusses eduation issues well. He discusses leadership. And he conlcueds by annoyingly riffing on economically illiterate sustainability issues at the end of the book.

He also hits a bunch of standard psychology topics, as with most modern popular psychology books, which becomes annoying when you've read the rest of them.

The first few chapters were clear and insightful enough to give the book 5 stars, had it continued as it was. If it had had just one digression into a topic like hyper-emotionally intelligent folks...it would also have been worth 5 stars. But the comprehensive lack of focus, and the annoying obligatory environmental bits at the end push it down to 3.5 stars.

The incessant barking from the backyard of his family's palatial estate confirmed Caleb Fairchild's fear. His grandmother had gone to the dogs.

Cursing under his breath, he pressed the doorbell.

A symphony of chimes filled the air, drowning out the irritating barks. Forget Mozart. Forget Bach. Only a commissioned piece from a respected New York composer would do for Gertrude Fairchild, his grandmother who had founded a billion-dollar skin care company with his late grandfather in Boise, Idaho.

Caleb was here to put an end to her frivolous infatuation with man's best friend. It was the only way to keep Fair Face, the family company, successful and profitable.

The front door opened, greeting him with a blast of cold air and a whiff of his grandmother's floral scent perfume.

Grams.

Short white curls bounced every which way. She looked fifty-seven not seventy-seven, thanks to decades of using her own skin care products.

"Caleb! I saw your car on the security camera so told Mrs. Harrison I would answer the door." The words rushed from Grams's mouth faster than lobster tails disappeared from the buffet table at the country club. "What are you doing here? Your assistant said you didn't have any free time this week. That's why I mailed you the dog care prototypes."

He hadn't expected Grams to be so excited by his visit. He kissed her cheek. "I'm never too busy for you."

Her cornflower blue eyes danced with laughter. "This is such a lovely surprise."

Sweat trickled down his back. Too bad he couldn't blame the perspiration on the warm June day.

He adjusted his yellow tie then smoothed his suit jacket. But no matter how professional he looked, she wasn't going to like what he had to say. "I'm not here as your grandson. I need to speak with you as Fair Face's CEO"

"Oh, sweetheart." The warmth in her voice added to his discomfort. "I raised you. You'll always be my grandson first."

Her words hit him like a sucker-punch. He owed Grams…everything.

She opened the door wider. "Come in."

"Nice sari," he said.

Grams struck a pose. "Just something I had in my closet."

He entered the foyer. "Better add Bollywood to your bucket list."

"Already have." She closed the door. "Let's go out on the patio and chat."

Chat, not speak or discuss or talk. Not good.

Caleb glanced around. Something was…off.

Museum-worthy works of art hung in the same places. The squeaky dog toys and ravaged stuffed animals on the shiny hardwood floor were new. But the one display he expected to see, what he wanted to see, what he longed to see was missing from its usual spot.

His throat tightened. "Where are the—"

"In the living room."

Caleb walked around the corner and saw the three-foot U.S. Navy aircraft carrier replicas showcased on a brand-new wooden display case. He touched the deck of the USS Ronald Reagan.

Familiar. Soothing. Home.

"I've been making some changes around here," Grams said from behind him. "I thought they deserved a nicer place than the foyer."

He faced her. "Gramps would like this."

"That's what I thought, too. Have you eaten lunch?"

"I grabbed something on my way over."

"Then you need dessert. I have cake. Made it myself." She touched Caleb's arm with her thin, vein-covered hand. "Carrot, not chocolate, but still tasty."

Grams always felt the urge to feed him. He knew she wouldn't give up until he agreed to have a bite to eat. "I'll have something before I leave."

A satisfied smile graced her glossed lips.

At least one of them was happy.

Back in the foyer, he kicked a tennis ball with his foot. "It's a miracle you don't break a hip with all these dog toys laying around."

"I might be old, but I'm still spry." His grandmother's gaze softened. She placed her hand over her heart. "Heavens. Every time I see you, you remind me more and more of your father. God rest his soul."

Caleb's stomach churned as if he'd eaten one too many spicy Buffalo wings. He strived hard to be nothing like his feckless father. A man who'd wanted nothing to do with Fair Face. A man who'd blown through money like a hedge fund manager's mistress. A man who'd died in a fiery speedboat crash off the Cote d'Azur with his girlfriend du jour.

Grams' gaze ran the length of Caleb. She clucked her tongue. "But you've got to stop dressing like a high-class mortician."

"Not this again." Caleb raised his chin, undaunted, and followed her out of the foyer. "You'd have me dress like a rugged, action-adventure movie star. A shirtless one, given the pictures you share on Facebook."

They walked by the dining room where two elaborate chandeliers hung above a hand-carved mahogany table that sat twenty.

"You're a handsome man," Grams said. "Show off your assets."

"I'm the CEO. I have a professional image to maintain."

"There's no corporate policy that says your hair can't touch your collar."

"The cut suits my position."

"Your suits are a whole other matter." She pointed at his chest. "Your tie is too understated. Red screams power. We'll go shopping. Girls these days are looking for the whole package. That includes having stylish hair and being a snazzy dresser."

And not taking your grandmother's fashion advice.

They walked into the kitchen. A basket of fruit and a covered cake stand sat on the marble counter. Something simmered on the stove. The scent of basil filled the air. Normal, everyday things, but this visit home felt anything but normal.

"Women only care about the balance in my bank account," he said.

"Some. Not all." She stopped, squeezed his hand, the way she'd done for as long as Caleb remembered. Her tender touch and her warm hugs had seen him through death, heartbreak and everyday life. "You'll find a woman who cares only about you."

Difficult to do when he wasn't looking, but he wasn't telling Grams that today. One piece of bad news a day met her quota. "I like being single."

"You must have one-night stands or friends with benefits."

He flinched. "You're spending too much time on Facebook."

A disturbing realization formed in his mind. Discussing sex might be easier than talking to Grams about her dog skin care products.

She placed her hands on her hips. "I would like great grandchildren one of these years while I can still get on the floor and play with them. Why do you think I created that line of organic baby products?"

"Everyone at the company knows you want great grandchildren."

"What's a woman to do?" She put her palms up. Gold bracelets clinked against each other. "You and your sister are in no rush to give me grandbabies while I'm still breathing."

"Can you imagine Courtney as a mom?"

"She has some growing up to do," Grams admitted, but without any accusation or disappointment. She walked into the family room with its leather couches, huge television and enough books on the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves to start a library. "Though I give you credit for at least proposing to that money-grubbing floozy, Cash-andra."

Unwelcome memories flooded him. His heart cried foul. Cheat. Sucker. "Cassandra."

The woman had introduced herself to him at a benefit dinner. Smart and sexy as hell, Cassandra knew what buttons to push to become the center of his universe. She'd made him feel more like a warrior than a businessman. Marriage hadn't been on his radar screen, but when she gave him an ultimatum, he'd played right into her hand with a romantic proposal and a stunning three-carat engagement ring only to find out everything about her and their relationship had been a scam, a ruse, a lie.

"Cash-andra fits." Grams held up three fingers. "Refusing to sign the agreed-upon prenup. Twotiming you. Hiring a divorce attorney before saying I do. No wonder you're afraid to date."

He squared his shoulders. "I'm not afraid."

Not afraid of Cassandra.

Not afraid of any woman.

But he was…cautious.

After Cassandra wouldn't sign the prenup, he'd called off the wedding and broken up with her. She'd begged him for a second chance, and he'd been tempted to reconcile, until a private investigator proved the woman was a gold digger in the same league as his own mother.

Grams waved a hand in the air, as if she could brush aside bad things in the world. Light reflected off her three diamond rings, anniversary presents from his grandfather. "I shouldn't have mentioned the Jezebel."

At least Caleb had gotten away relatively unscathed except for a bruised ego and broken heart. Unlike his father who'd wound up with two kids he'd never wanted.

She exited the house through the family room's French doors.

Caleb followed her outside to see new furniture—a large gleaming, teak table surrounded matching wood chairs, a hammock and padded loungers.

The sun beat down. He pulled out a chair for his grandmother, who sat. "It's hot. Let me put up the umbrella."

Grams picked up a black rectangular remote from the table. "I've got it."

She pressed a button.

A cantilevered umbrella opened, covering them in shade.

He joined her at the table.

"What do you think about the dog products?" Gertie asked.

No birds chirped. Even the crickets seemed to be napping. The only thing he heard was an occasional bark and his grandfather's voice.

Do what must be done. For Fair Face. For your grandmother.

Caleb would rather be back in his office dealing with end-of-quarter results. Who was he kidding? He'd rather be anywhere else right now.

"Interesting prototypes," he said. "Appealing fragrance and texture."

Gertie whistled. "Wait until you see them in action."

Dogs ran full speed from around the corner. A blur of gray, brown and black. The three animals stopped at Grams's feet, mouths panting and tails wagging.

"Feel how soft they are." Pride filled her voice as if the dogs were as much a part of her gene pool as Caleb was.

He rested his hands on the table, not about to touch one of her animals. "Most fur is soft if a dog is clean."

"Not Dozer's." She scooped up the little brown dog, whose right eye had been sewn shut. Not one of her expensive show dogs. A rescue or foster. "His hair was bristly and dry with flakes."

"Doggy dandruff?"

"Allergies. Animals have sensitivities like humans. That's why companies need to use natural and organic ingredients. No nasty chemicals or additives. Look at Dozer now." She stared at the dog with the same love and acceptance she'd always given Courtney and him. Even before their father had dumped them here after their mother ran off with her personal trainer. "That's why I developed Fair Face's new line of animal products."

Ignoring the gray dog brushing against his leg, Caleb held up his hands to stop her. "Fair Face doesn't manufacture animal products."

Grams's grin didn't falter. "Not yet, but you will. I've tested the formulas on my consultant and myself. We've used them on my dogs."

"I didn't know you hired a consultant."

"Her name is Becca. You'll love her."

Caleb doubted that. Most consultants were only looking for a big payday. He'd have to check this Becca's qualifications. "You realize Fair Face is a skin care company. Human skin."

"Skin or fur. Two legs or four. Change…expansion is important if a company wants to remain relevant."

"Not in this case." He needed to be careful not to hurt Grams's feelings. "Our resources are tied up with the launch of the organic baby care line. This isn't the time to expose ourselves to more risk."

Lines tightened around her mouth. "Your grandfather built Fair Face by taking risks. Sometimes you have to put yourself out on a limb."

"Limbs break. I have one thousand one hundred thirty-three employees who count on me to make sure they receive paychecks."

"What I'm asking you to do is not risky. The formulas are ready to go into production. Put together a pilot sales program and we're all set."

"It's not that simple, Grams. Fair Face is a multinational company. We have extra product testing and research to ensure ourselves against liability issues." The words came out slowly, full of intent and purpose and zero emotion. His grandmother was the smartest woman he knew, used to getting her way. If he wasn't careful, he would find himself not only manufacturing her products, but also taking one of her damn dogs home. Likely the one-eyed mutt with soft fur. "I won't expose Fair Face to the additional expense of trying to break into an unknown market."

Grams sighed, a long drawn out sigh he hadn't heard since Courtney lost her passport in Prague when she was supposed to be in Milan.

"Sometimes I wish you had a little more of your father in you instead of being so buttoned-down and by-the-book."

The aggravation in her voice matched the tension cording in Caleb's neck. The tightness seeped to his shoulders, spilled down his spine. "This isn't personal. I can't afford to make a mistake, and you should be enjoying your retirement, not working in your lab."

"I'm a chemist. That's what I do. You didn't have this problem with the organic baby line." Frustration tinged each of her words, matching the I-wish-you'ddrop-it look in her eyes. "I see what's going on. You don't like the dog care products."

"I never said that."

"But it's the truth." She studied him as if she were trying to prove a hypothesis. "You've got that look. The one you got when you said it didn't matter if your father came home for Christmas."

"I never needed him here. I had you and Gramps." Caleb would try a new tactic. He scooted his chair closer. "Remember Gramps's marketing tagline."

"The fairest face of all…"

"His words still define the company today. Fifty years later." Caleb leaned toward her, as if his nearness would soften the blow. "I'm sorry to say it, but dog products, no matter how natural or organic or aromatherapeutic, have no place at Fair Face."

"It's still my company." She enunciated each word with a firm voice punctuated by her ramrod posture.

Disappointing his grandmother was something his father did, not Caleb. He felt like a jerk. One with a silk noose around his neck choking him.

"I know that, but it's not just my decision." A plane flew overhead. A dog barked. The silence at the table deepened. He prepared himself to say what he'd come here to say. "I met with the department heads before coming over here. Showed them your prototypes. Ran the numbers. Calculated margins."

"And…"

"Everyone has high expectations for your baby skin care line," he said. "But they agree—moving into animal products will affect Fair Face's reputation, not enhance our brand and lead to loss of revenue, anywhere from 2.3 to 5.7 percent."

Caleb expected to see a reaction, hear a retort. But Grams remained silent, her face still, nuzzling the dog against her neck. "Everyone thinks this?"

He nodded once.

Disbelief flickered across her face. She'd looked the same way when she learned his grandfather had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. But then something sparked. A spark of resignation. No, a spark of resolve.

"Well, that settles it. I trust you know what's best for Fair Face." She sounded doting and grandmotherly, not disappointed and hurt. "Becca and I will figure out another way."

"Another way for what?"

Grams's eyes darkened to a steely blue. "To manufacture the products. You and those suits at Fair Face are wrong. There's a market for my dog skin care line. A big one."

A very enjoyable read.
By Harlequin Junkie Blog
Caleb dreads meeting with his grandmother, Gertie Fairchild. Now that he runs the skin-care company she founded he has people to answer to - and those people aren't incredibly keen on adding a pet care line into the mix. He has to walk the edge between kindness and truth, and his Grams will know if he even hints at lying.

In the middle of his over-rehearsed speech, he notices the young woman corralling his Grandmother's dogs on the expansive back lawn. She tells him that she's her "consultant", Becca Taylor. Having been burned many times by people trying to get at the family's money, he's wary of the woman. She could be leading Gertie down the plumrose path to 'free-moneys-ville'.

Becca doesn't give a whit about the money, although truth be told - it would be nice to have some for a change. Gertie is the first person in a very long time that's been willing to give her a chance. She made the mistake of trusting someone in her youth and it cost her reputation and three years of her life. But she's paid her dues, even if she shouldn't have had to - and now finding somewhere to start her life again is a challenge.

When called to Caleb's office, she knows why. He's just like all the others. Seeing her past and thinking the worst. While disappointed, Becca doesn't hesitate to stand up for herself. It turns out that her determination was just the start to earning his respect - and maybe even friendship. Especially since she'll be seeing quite a bit of him.

While 'Fair Face' isn't willing to back Gertie's dog skin care products, Caleb learns that she might be yearning for more time with her family - so he offers to help Becca make up the business plan and put a few ideas into action. That includes accompanying her to a dog show to see product reception as she hands out leaflets and samples. When one of his Grandmother's dogs takes Best in Show, they have more to celebrate than they thought.

Gertie of course throws a big party back at the big house, and admits to Caleb that she's been trying to play matchmaker. Since he has no idea where their little kiss left them, he protests... weakly. He finds Becca hanging out in the kennel after becoming overwhelmed at the party, and his sister (Courtney) & Grams find them in a hotter embrace than they had the first night.

Just when Becca thinks there might be a future for Caleb and herself, his true colors start to show. He says the situation he's gotten in is for publicity, but he didn't tell her the truth - which says to her that he can't be trusted. She deserves more - and tells him so.

Can Caleb convince her that a girl from a trailer park will fit into his world after all? If Gram and his sister have anything to say about it, the answer will be yes.

This story was simply sweet. Not much steam, but the attraction between the hero and heroine was very well written - and I enjoyed Gertie and Courtney as well. I'm not sure if Courtney will be getting her own book, but I wouldn't mind hearing more about her. A very enjoyable read.

The Man Behind The Pinstripes
By NancyCinNC
The Man Behind the Pinstripes by Melissa McClone: Becca Taylor followed a misguided heart at the age of eighteen and ended up spending three years in prison. Since being released she has followed her passion for dogs. Now a certified vet tech she dreams of becoming a full-time dog handler. Befriended by Gertie Fairchild, she has been hire to groom and show her dogs. Becca is determined to never let another man rule her head or heart. I loved that she became strong, feisty, dependable and spoke her mind.

Caleb Fairchild has come to his grandmother Gertie's estate to discuss her latest invention. What he never planned on, was meeting Becca. He becomes suspicious when he finds out Becca is living in the guest cottage. Convinced she is a gold digger like his ex-finance, he hires a private investigator. When confronted with the report he is shocked to learn how upfront Becca is about her past. Caleb is handsome, but a little to uptight. And very protective of his Grandmother.

Though neither planned it, there is no denying the growing attraction between these two. She has an issue with rich men. And he doesn't care for anything serious. Both characters were likable, but my heart just went out to Becca's character. She suffered so much at the hands of others.

You also had wonderful secondary character such as Gertie, Courtney "Caleb's" sister both were well written. I loved the support that both showed to Becca, and Gertie's wisdom regarding her own grandson. We are also introduced to Becca's parents Rob and Debbie. I also enjoyed the story line. And all of the four legged friends.

4.5/5 stars

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Good Romance Novel
By Amazon Customer
The Man Behind The Pinstripes is a good read. Dog lovers will really enjoy it as the heroine is a dog handler. The hero is a businessman who is attracted despite himself. This could have been predictable, but wasn't. I particularly enjoyed how the heroine's past is revealed, and how she deals so honestly with it.

Monday seven a.m. on a cold, foggy day in London a breakfast meeting was being held by a powerful consortium set up to acquire the world's biggest diamond mine. The group of three men was led by Sheikh Sharif al Kareshi, a leading geologist otherwise known as the Black Sheikh, thanks to his discovery of vast oil lakes beneath the desert sands of Kareshi. Concealed lighting was set at the perfect level for reading the fine print on a contract, and the surroundings were sumptuous as befitted the ruling Sheikh of Kareshi in his London home. Seated with the sheikh at the table were two men of roughly the same age, that was to say, thirty-two. One was a Spaniard, and the other owned an island off southern Italy. All three men were giants in the world of commerce, and heartbreakers in the game of life. Colossal sums of money were being bandied about. The atmosphere was tense.

'A diamond mine beyond the Arctic circle?' the darkly glamorous Count Roman Quisvada remarked.

'Diamonds were discovered in the Canadian Arctic some years back,' Sharif explained, leaning back. 'Why not the European Arctic, my friend?'

All three men had been friends since boarding school in England, and, although they had all gone on to make individual fortunes, they were bound by friendship and trusted each other implicitly.

'My first pass over the findings suggests this discovery by Skavanga Mining could be even larger than we suspected,' Sharif went on, pushing some documents across the table to the other two men.

'And I hear that Skavanga boasts three sisters who have become known as the Skavanga Diamonds, which in itself intrigues me,' the dangerous-looking Spaniard commented as he peeled a Valencia orange with a blade as sharp as a scalpel.

'I'll tell you what I know, Raffa,' the sheikh promised his friend, better known as Don Rafael de Leon, Duke of Cantalabria, a mountainous and very beautiful region of Spain.

Count Roman Quisvada also sat forward. Roman was an expert in diamonds, with laboratories that specialised in cutting and polishing high-value stones, while Raffa owned the world's largest and most exclusive chain of highend retail jewellers. The Black Sheikh, the Italian count, and the Spanish duke had the diamond business sewn up.

There was just one loose end, Sharif reflected, and that was a company called Skavanga Mining. Owned by the three sisters, Britt, Eva and Leila Skavanga, along with the girls' absentee brother, Tyr, Skavanga Mining had reported the discovery of the largest diamond deposits ever recorded. He was on the point of going to Skavanga to check out these reports for himself.

While he was there he would check out Britt Skavanga, the oldest sister, who was currently running the company, Sharif mused as he drew a photograph towards him. She looked like a worthy opponent with her clear grey eyes, firm mouth and the tilt of that chin. He looked forward to meeting her. A deal with the added spice of down time in the bedroom held obvious appeal. There was no sentiment in business and he certainly wasted none on women.

'Why do you get all the fun?' Roman complained, frowning when Sharif told the other men about his plan.

'There are plenty to go round,' he reassured them dryly as the other two men studied the photographs of the sisters. Glancing at Raffa, he felt a momentary twinge of something close to apprehension. The youngest sister, whom Raffa was studying, was clearly an innocent, while Raffa was most certainly not.

'Three good-looking women,' Roman commented, glancing between his friends.

'For three ruthless asset strippers,' Raffa added, devouring the last piece of orange with relish. 'I look forward to stripping the assets off this one—'

Raffa's dark eyes blackened dangerously as Sharif gathered the photographs in. Sharif hardly realised that he was caressing the photograph of Britt Skavanga with his forefinger while denying Raffa further study of Leila, the youngest sister.

'This could be our most promising project to date,' the man known to the world as the Black Sheikh commented.

'And if anyone can land this deal, Sharif can,' Roman remarked, hoping to heal the momentary rift between his friends. He could only be thankful their interest wasn't in the same girl.

Raffa's laugh relaxed them all. 'Didn't I hear you have some interesting sexual techniques in Kareshi, Sharif? Silken ties? Chiffon blindfolds?'

Roman huffed a laugh at this. 'I've heard the same thing. In the harem tents it's said they use creams and potions to send sensation through the roof—'

'Enough,' Sharif rapped, raising his hands to silence his friends. 'Can we please return to business?'

Within seconds the Skavanga girls were forgotten and the talk was all of balance sheets and financial predictions, but in one part of his mind Sharif was still thinking about a pair of cool grey eyes and a full, expressive mouth, and what could be accomplished with a little expert tutelage.

An absolute monarch, bred to a hard life in the desert, Sharif had been trained to rule and fight and argue at council with the wisest of men—women being notable by their absence, which was something he had changed as soon as he took over the country. Women in Kareshi had used to be regarded as ornaments to be pampered and spoiled and hidden away; under his rule they were expected to pull their weight. Education for all was now the law.

And who would dare to argue with the Black Sheikh? Not Britt Skavanga, that was for sure. Staring at Britt's photograph and seeing the steely determination so similar to his own in her eyes only reinforced his intention to check out all the assets in Skavanga personally. Britt possessed the generous, giving mouth of a concubine, with the unrelenting gaze of a Viking warrior. The combination aroused him. Even the severity of the suit she was wearing intrigued him. Her breasts thrusting against the soft wool stirred his senses in a most agreeable way. He adored severe tailoring on a woman. It was a type of shorthand he had learned to read many years ago. Severe equalled repressed, or possibly a player who liked to tease. Either way, he was a huge fan.

'Are you still with us, Sharif?' Raffa enquired with amusement as his friend finally pushed Britt's photograph away.

'Yes, but not for long as I will be leaving for Ska-vanga in the morning, travelling in my capacity of geologist and advisor to the consortium. This will allow me to make an impartial assessment of the situation without ruffling any feathers.'

'That's sensible,' Raffa agreed. 'Talk of the Black Sheikh descending on a business would be enough to send anyone into a panic.'

'Have you ever descended on a tasty business prospect without devouring it?' Roman enquired, hiding his smile.

'The fact that this mysterious figure, conjured by the press and known to the world as the Black Sheikh, has never had a photograph published will surely be an advantage to you,' Raffa suggested.

'I reserve judgement until we meet again when I will be in a position to tell you if the claims that have been made about the Skavanga Diamonds are true,' Sharif said with a closing gesture.

'We can ask for no more than that,' his two friends agreed.

'Well, clearly, I must be the one to meet him,' Britt insisted as the three sisters sat round the interestingly shaped—if not very practical, thanks to the holes the designer had punched in it—blonde wood kitchen table in Britt's sleek, minimalist, barely lived-in penthouse.

'Clearly—why?' Britt's feisty middle sister, Eva, demanded. 'Who says you have the right to take the lead in this new venture? Shouldn't we all have a part in it? What about the equality you're always banging on about, Britt?'

'Britt has far more business experience than we have,' the youngest and most mild-mannered sister, Leila, pointed out. 'And that's a perfectly sensible reason for Britt to be the one to meet with him,' Leila added, sweeping anxious fingers through her tumbling blonde curls.

'Perfectly sensible?' Eva scoffed. 'Britt has experience in mining iron ore and copper. But diamonds?' Eva rolled her emerald eyes. 'You must agree the three of us are virgins where diamonds are concerned?'

And Eva was likely to remain a virgin in every sense if she kept on like this, Britt thought, fretting like a mother over her middle sister. Eva had been a glass-half-empty type of person for as long as Britt could remember and sadly there were no dashing Petruchios in Skavanga to prevent Eva from turning into a fully-fledged shrew. 'I'm going to deal with this—and with him,' she said firmly.

'You and the Black Sheikh?' Eva said scornfully. 'You might be a hotshot businesswoman here in Ska-vanga, but the sheikh's business interests are global—and he runs a country. What on earth makes you think you can take a man like that on?'

'I know my business,' Britt said calmly. 'I know our mine and I'll be factual. I'll be cool and I'll be reasoned.'

'Britt's very good at doing stuff like this without engaging her emotions,' Leila added.

'Really?' Eva mocked. 'Whether she can or not remains to be seen.'

'I won't let you down,' Britt promised, knowing her sisters' concerns both for her and for the business had prompted this row. 'I've handled difficult people in the past and I'm well prepared to meet the Black Sheikh. I realise I must handle him with kid gloves—'

'Nice.' Eva laughed.

Britt ignored this. 'We would be unwise to underestimate him,' she said. 'The ruler of Kareshi is known as the Black Sheikh for a very good reason—'

'Rape and pillage?' Eva suggested scathingly.

Britt held her tongue. 'Sheikh Sharif is one of the foremost geologists in the world.'

'It's a shame we couldn't find any photographs of him,' Leila mused.

'He's a geologist, not a film star,' Britt pointed out. 'And how many Arab rulers have you seen photographs of?'

'He's probably so ugly he'd break the camera,' Eva muttered. 'I bet he's a nerd with pebble glasses and a bristly chin.'

'If he is he would be easier for Britt to deal with,' Leila said hopefully.

'A ruler who has moved his country forward and brought peace sounds like a decent man to me, so, whatever he looks like, it doesn't matter. I just need your support. Fact: the minerals at the mine are running out and we need investment. The consortium this man heads up has the money to allow us to mine the diamonds.'

There was a silence as Britt's sisters accepted the truth of this and she breathed a sigh of relief when they nodded their heads. Now she had a chance to rescue the mine and the town of Skavanga that was built around it. That, together with all the fresh challenges ahead of her, made her meeting with the so-called Black Sheikh seem less of a problem.

She was feeling slightly less sanguine the following day.

'Serves you right for building up your hopes,' Eva said as the girls gathered in Britt's study after hearing her groan. 'Your famous Black Sheikh can't even be bothered to meet with you,' Eva remarked, peering over Britt's shoulder at the email message on the computer screen. 'So he's sending a representative instead,' she scoffed, turning to throw an I-told-you-so look at Leila.

'I'll get some fresh coffee,' Leila offered.

Eva's carping was really getting on Britt's nerves. She'd been up since dawn exchanging emails with Kareshi. It was practically noon for her, Britt reflected angrily as Leila brought the coffee in. Her sisters loved staying in the city with her, but sometimes they forgot that, while they could lounge around, she had a job to do. 'I'm still going to meet with him. What else am I going to do?' she demanded, swinging round to confront her sisters. 'Do you two have any better ideas?'

Eva fell silent, while Leila gave Britt a sympathetic look as she handed her a mug of coffee. 'I'm just sorry we're going back home and leaving you with all this to deal with.'

'That's my job,' Britt said, controlling her anger. She could never be angry with Leila. 'Of course I'm disappointed I won't be meeting the Black Sheikh, but all I've ever asked for is your support, Eva.'

'Sorry,' Eva muttered awkwardly. 'I know you got landed with the company when Mum and Dad died. I'm just worried about what's going to happen now all the commodities are running out. I do realise the mine's sunk without the diamonds. And I know you'll do your very best to land this deal, but I'm worried about you, Britt. This is too much on your shoulders.'

'Stop it,' Britt warned, giving her sister a hug. 'Whoever the Black Sheikh sends, I can deal with him.'

'It says that the man you're to expect is a qualified geologist,' Leila pointed out. 'So at least you'll have something in common.' Britt's degree was also in Geology, with a Master's in Business Management.

'Yes,' Eva agreed, trying to sound as optimistic as her sister. 'I'm sure it will be fine.'

Britt knew that both her sisters were genuinely concerned about her. They just had different ways of showing it. 'Well, I'm excited,' she said firmly to lift the mood. 'When this man gets here we're another step closer to saving the company.'

'I wish Tyr were here to help you.'

Leila's words made them all silent. Tyr was their long-lost brother and they rarely talked about him because it hurt too much. They couldn't understand why he had left in the first place, much less why Tyr had never contacted them.

Britt broke the silence first. 'Tyr would do exactly what we're doing. He thinks the same as us. He cares about the company and the people here.'

'Which explains why he stays away,' Eva murmured.

'He's still one of us,' Britt insisted. 'We stick together. Remember that. The discovery of diamonds might even encourage him to return home.'

'But Tyr isn't motivated by money,' Leila piped up.

Even Eva couldn't disagree with that. Tyr was an idealist, an adventurer. Their brother was many things, but money was not his god, though Britt wished he would come home again. She missed him. Tyr had been away too long.

'Here's something that will make you laugh,' Leila said in an attempt to lift the mood. Pulling the newspaper towards her, she pointed to an article in the newspaper that referred to the three sisters as the Skavanga Diamonds. 'They haven't tired of giving us that ridiculous nickname.'

'It's just so patronising,' Eva huffed, brushing a cascade of fiery red curls away from her face.

'I've been called worse things,' Britt argued calmly.

'Don't be so naive,' Eva snapped. 'All that article does is wave a flag in front of the nose of every fortune-hunter out there—'

'And what's wrong with that?' Leila interrupted. 'I'd just like to see a man who isn't drunk by nine o'clock—'

This brought a shocked intake of breath from Britt and Eva, as Leila had mentioned something else they never spoke about. There had long been a rumour that their father had been drunk when he piloted the small company plane to disaster with their mother on board.

Leila flushed red as she realised her mistake. 'I'm sorry—I'm just tired of your sniping, Eva. We really should get behind Britt.'

'Leila's right,' Britt insisted. 'It's crucial we keep our focus and make this deal work. We certainly can't afford to fall out between us. That article is fluff and we shouldn't even be wasting time discussing it. If Ska-vanga Mining is going to have a future we have to consider every offer on the table—and so far the consortium's is the only offer.'

'I suppose you could always give the sheikh's representative a proper welcome, Skavanga style,' Eva suggested, brightening.

Leila relaxed into a smile. 'I'm sure Britt has got a few ideas up her sleeve.'

'It's not my sleeve you need to worry about,' Britt commented dryly, relieved that they were all the best of friends again.

'Just promise me you won't do anything you'll regret,' Leila said, remembering to worry.

'I won't regret it at the time,' Britt promised dryly.

'Unless he truly is a boffin with pebble glasses—in which case I'll just have to put a paper bag over his head.'

'Don't become overconfident,' Eva warned.

'I'm not worried. If he proves difficult I'll cut a hole in the ice and send him swimming. That will soon cool his ardour—'

'Why stop there?' Eva added. 'Don't forget the birch twig switches. You can always give him a good thrashing. That'll sort him out.'

'I'll certainly consider it—'

'Tell me you're joking?' Leila begged.

Thankfully, Britt's younger sister missed the look Britt and Eva exchanged.

leery opening scene - Susan Stephens
By Karen Clarke
Reading of three powerful business men, 'giants in the world of commerce' leering over a photograph of the three Skavanga sisters is a sickening start - strike one!

At Emir/Sharif and Britt's first meeting, it's a wham bam legs up Britt, right there in the boardroom. Lots of dragged out bunny rabbit matings, mainly to fill up the novel - strike two!

This was shallow and stupid on the first read, the only HP heroine that behaved like a slut. Then it was ninny nonsense on the second read in case I'd missed something - strike three, you're out!

'Emir reared over her, magnificent and erect - like a stallion on the point of servicing a mare' - I laughed so hard. This is like a besotted teenager writing her fantasy diary?

ugh
By Gypsy Rose
I didn't enjoy anything about this book and to know its the first in a series is just a horrible thought. The secondary males that are the friends, especially Raffa just creeped me out. Not to mention how the man knows nothing about any of the females but is already stroking the one's picture. All he cared about was the diamonds and then the pics of the girls, intending to rob them blind. It was hard to get past the first chapter. I don't usually rate a story a 1 but this story just dragged in the first pages. I hated the writing in this book too it was hard to really follow, it was like the author was writing only half a conversation. Sometimes it works and sometimes its annoying.

Ok Read!
By Harlequin Junkie Blog
When the Skavanga diamond mines running low on funds with plenty of gems to unearth, Britt Skavanga finds a consortium willing to invest and give her company the boost it needs to get the job done. The consortium is a group of men, one of which is Sheikh Sharif al Kareshi, who is a geologist. She makes arrangements to meet with the Sheikh, but he informs her he's decided to send an envoy instead.

Sharif would like to investigate the nordic mines without the hoopla being a Sheikh involves, so he takes the trip to meet with all-business Britt himself. However, he asks her to call him Emir and leads her to believe he is simply an employee of Kareshi.

After tension so thick diamonds wouldn't cut through it during their initial meeting, they lose control and give in to passion right in the boardroom. Both of them believe the interlude will allow them to move on and concentrate on the business at hand, but neither of them expect to stay on edge around each other.

A trip to Britt's family cabin near the mines puts them in close quarters, and she shows him the pleasures of her country's savusauna rituals. They manage to get themselves hotter than the steam, and fall back into each other's arms. When she wakes up to find him packing, she feels let down... until she gets a call that the consortium is taking over with the help of their errant brother, Tyr. Not only that, but she learns that the man she called "Emir" (which means 'king') is really Sheikh Sharif.

The sting of his betrayal sends her to Kareshi to confront him, but manages to almost get herself killed on the way. Sharif saves her and installs her in his 'harem tent', where she again gives in to her feelings for him. He can't reveal the secrets Tyr has asked him to keep, but how will he ever regain her trust if she doesn't know the truth. That he and her brother have only done what was necessary to save the company and keep their family legacy intact.

I must say, the sex scenes were pretty hot, but things happened so quickly between them I never really understood their attraction to each other. And love? I just wasn't sure how that came about. The descriptions of the two country's environs and rituals were amazingly written, but I wanted to feel more of a connection between the Hero and Heroine.

London—May 1819

Rhys and his friend Xavier sat at a table in the dining room of Stephen's Hotel. They had just been served their food when Rhys glanced towards the doorway.

Two men stood there, scanning the dining room.

Rhys knew them. Had known them since childhood. Viscount Neddington, ne William Westleigh, and his brother Hugh, the legitimate sons of Earl Westleigh.

His brothers.

Rhys turned back to his food.

Xavier put down his fork with a clatter. 'What the devil?' He inclined his head towards the doorway. 'Look who is here.'

Rhys glanced up. 'They are looking for someone.'

Stephen's Hotel catered to military men, or former military men like Rhys and Xavier. Not the usual stamping ground of the Westleighs.

Rhys waited for the inevitable moment one of the Westleighs would notice him and slip his gaze away as if Rhys had never existed. Over the years when their paths had crossed, Neddington and Hugh always tried to act as if he'd never existed. Certainly that was their wish.

Ned, the elder, taller brother, turned his head in Rhys's direction. Their eyes locked, but this time Ned did not look away. This time he nudged his brother and the two walked straight for Rhys's table.

'They are headed here,' Rhys told Xavier.

His friend blew out a breath. 'I'll be damned…'

Rhys continued to hold Ned's gaze. Rhys always stood his ground with the Westleighs.

They stopped at the table.

'Rhys.' Ned inclined his head in an effort, Rhys supposed, to appear cordial.

'Gentlemen.' Rhys would be damned if he'd greet them by name and pretend an intimacy that had never existed. He gestured towards Xavier. 'My friend, Mr Campion.'

'We are acquainted.' Ned bowed in acknowledgement.

'We are indeed.' Xavier's tone was sarcastic.

Rhys cut another piece of meat. 'Are you merely paying your respects, or do you seek me out?'

'We seek you out,' Hugh replied, his voice taut and anxious.

Xavier glanced from one man to the other, obviously curious as to the purpose of this unusual visit.

Rhys made his expression neutral. Years of card-playing taught him to conceal his thoughts and emotions. He certainly had no intention of revealing anything to a Westleigh. He lifted a piece of beef into his mouth.

'Forgive us for interrupting your dinner.' Ned's tone was conciliatory, if somewhat stiff. 'We need a word with you.'

They needed a word with him? Now this was unique.

Rhys deliberately kept his attention to his plate, but he gestured to the empty chairs at the table. 'Have a seat.'

Hugh, shorter and always more hot-headed, emitted an indignant sound.

'We would prefer to speak in private.' Ned seemed anxious to avoid offending Rhys in any way.

Xavier straightened. If his friend were carrying a sword, Rhys suspected he'd have drawn it.

Rhys gazed at the two men, seeing only the boys they once were. The bitter memory of their first encounter, when Rhys was nine, flashed through his mind. He'd confronted them with what he'd just learned—that they shared a father.

That moment, like countless others from their childhoods, had resulted in flying fists and bloody noses.

Rhys stared into eyes identical to his. Dark brown, framed by thick eyebrows. Like his, Ned's and Hugh's hair was close-cut and near-black. Rhys might be taller and thicker-muscled, but if he stood side by side with these two men, who could ever deny they were brothers?

He exchanged a glance with Xavier, whose lips thinned in suspicion.

Rhys shrugged. 'Wait for me in the parlour off the hall. I'll come to you as soon as I've finished eating.'

Ned bowed curtly and Hugh glowered, but both turned and walked away.

Xavier watched their retreat. 'I do not trust them. Do you wish me to come with you?'

Rhys shook his head. 'There never was a time I could not take on both Westleighs.'

'Just the same, I dislike the sound of this,' Xavier countered. 'They are up to something.'

Rhys took another bite of his food. 'Oh, they are up to something. On that we agree. But I will see them alone.'

Xavier shot him a sceptical look.

Rhys took his time finishing his meal, although he possessed no more appetite for it. In all likelihood this would be an unpleasant interview. All encounters with Ned and Hugh were unpleasant.

Xavier clapped him on his shoulder before parting from him in the hall. 'Take care, Rhys.'

Rhys stepped into the parlour and Ned and Hugh turned to him. They'd remained standing.

He gestured. 'Follow me to my rooms.'

He led them up the two flights of stairs to his set of rooms. The door opened to a sitting room and as soon as Rhys led the men in, his manservant appeared.

'Some brandy for us, MacEvoy.'

MacEvoy's brows rose. MacEvoy, a man with an even rougher history than Rhys, had been his batman during the war. Obviously he recognised Hugh Westleigh from the battlefield.

'Please sit.' Rhys extended his arm to a set of chairs. It gave him a perverse pleasure that his furnishings were of fine quality, even if the items had been payment for various gambling debts. Rhys was doing well, which had not always been true.

MacEvoy served the brandy and left the room.

Rhys took a sip. 'What is this about, that you must speak with me now? You've made such a point of avoiding me all these years.'

Ned glanced away as if ashamed. 'We may not have…spoken to you, but we have kept ourselves informed of your whereabouts and actions.'

Ned was speaking false. Rhys would wager his whole fortune that these two had never bothered to discover what had happened to him after his mother had died and their father had refused any further support. The earl had left him penniless and alone, at a mere fourteen years of age.

No use to contest the lie, however. 'I'm flattered,' he said instead.

'You've had a sterling military record,' Ned added. Hugh turned away this time. 'I lived,' Rhys said.

Hugh had also been in the war. The two former officers had come across each other from time to time in Spain, France and finally at Waterloo, although Hugh had been in a prestigious cavalry regiment, the Royal Dragoons. Rhys ultimately rose to major in the 44th Regiment of Foot. After the disastrous cavalry charge at Waterloo, Rhys had pulled Hugh from the mud and saved him from a French sabre. They said not a word to each other then, and Rhys would not speak of it now. The moment had been fleeting and only one of many that horrendous day.

Ned leaned forwards. 'You make your living by playing cards now, is that not correct?'

'Essentially,' Rhys admitted.

He'd learned to play cards at school, like every proper schoolboy, but he'd become a gambler on the streets of London. Gambling had been how he'd survived. It was still how he survived. He had become skilled at it out of necessity, earning enough to purchase his commission. Now that the war was over his winnings fed the foundation of a respectable fortune. Never again would his pockets be empty and his belly aching with hunger. He would be a success at…something. He did not know yet precisely what. Manufacturing, perhaps. Creating something useful, something more important than a winning hand of cards.

Hugh huffed in annoyance. 'Get on with it, Ned. Enough of this dancing around.' Hugh had always been the one to throw the first fist.

Ned looked directly into Rhys's eyes. 'We need your help, Rhys. We need your skill.'

'At playing cards?' That seemed unlikely.

'In a manner of speaking.' Ned rubbed his face. 'We have a proposition for you. A business proposition. One we believe will be to your advantage, as well.'

Did they think him a fool? Eons would pass before he'd engage in business with any Westleigh.

Rhys's skin heated with anger. 'I have no need of a business proposition. I've done quite well…' he paused '.since I was left on my own.'

'Enough, Ned.' Hugh's face grew red with emotion. He turned to Rhys. 'Our family is on the brink of disaster—'

Ned broke in, his voice calmer, more measured. 'Our father has been…reckless…in his wagering, his spending—'

'He's been reckless in everything!' Hugh threw up his hands. 'We are punting on the River Tick because of him.'

Earl Westleigh in grave debt? Now that was a turn of affairs.

Although aristocrats in severe debt tended to have abundantly more than the poor in the street. Ned and Hugh would never experience what Rhys knew of hunger and loneliness and despair.

He forced away the memory of those days lest he reveal how they nearly killed him.

'What can this have to do with me?' he asked in a mild tone.

'We need money—a great deal of it—and as quickly as possible,' Hugh said.

Rhys laughed at the irony. 'Earl Westleigh wishes to borrow money from me?'

'Not borrow money,' Ned clarified. 'Help us make money.'

Hugh made an impatient gesture. 'We want you to set up a gaming house for us. Run the place. Help us make big profits quickly.'

Ned's reasonable tone was grating on Rhys's nerves. On Hugh's, too, Rhys guessed.

Ned continued. 'Our reasoning is thus—if our father can lose a fortune in gaming hells, we should be able to recover a fortune by running one.' He opened his palms. 'Only we cannot be seen to be running one, even if we knew how. Which we do not. It would throw too much suspicion on our situation, you see, and that would cause our creditors to become impatient.' He smiled at Rhys. 'Butyou could do it. You have the expertise and…and there would not be any negative consequences for you.'

Except risking arrest, Rhys thought.

Although he could charge for membership. C...

A pleasant read with great characters
By Mary @ *Buried Under Romance*
This novel is a delightful read that at once moves slowly and quickly. Its selling point is the hero, Rhys, who is the illegitimate son of the Earl of Westleigh and estabished a gaming club at the request of his legitimate brothers, intending to prove his success to the world. Rhys has a notorious reputation, yet unlike most other rakes and rogues found among Regency romances, he does not actively seek a scandalous reputation; he already had one from being born a bastard. That said, his determination and drive for success is rather admirable, as is his tenacity to live when he was abandoned by his father at the young age of fourteen, and forced to support himself through gambling, finally amassing enough skill to build his own wealth.

When Westleigh's gambling ran too deep, his sons came asking Rhys for help to establish a gaming club so they could recoup his losses. Rhys agreed, albeit reluctantly, and saw this opportunity to get a boon from his wastrel father, a boon asking to be recognized as a member of the family. Here, the central focus of the story lie, and it is filled with rapid character developments from the growing affection between Rhys and his legitimate brothers and a blatant revealing of Westleigh's horrible character.

The romance aspect of the story moves rather slowly, in my opinion. The heroine, Celia Gale, is a baron's widow who is near penniless due to her husband's gambling away their fortune, yet she possesses superb gambling skills and masquerades as Rhys's club to win enough money to support her stepdaughter and mother-in-law. Celia's stepdaughter, Adele, is a sweet and innocent girl who forms an attachment with one of Rhys's brother, Lord Neddington, and this relationship reveals to Rhys the true identity of Celia, whose person he admired and lusted after. Even as Rhys and Celia begin a romantic relationship, Westleigh continues to serve as an antagonist who, in the past, had caused the death of Celia's father. Halfway throughout the book, the romance aspect was developing nicely, but suddenly the bomb of Rhys being Westleigh's son becomes enough to threaten his and Celia's budding romance. The continuing story somewhat dragged, and the romance was rather thrown aside for the resolution of retribution for Westleigh's past and current sins. In a sense, it feels like Westleigh was given more spotlight he ought to have as a villain, his presence overwhelming the plot of the story.

Overall, this book is enjoyable and a very pleasant read for any hour of the day. I recommend historical romance lovers to read Diane Gaston's writing, as it is filled with historical tidbits and wonderful characterizations.

Fully Enjoyable Story
By A. Carroll
I was fully engaged reading this story. I rooted for the likeable characters and despised the antagonists. There were a couple good surprises and enough character development in some of the secondary characters to spin off interesting stories about them. I love series books; the characters become much more meaningful to me and so the stories are enjoyed that much more!

Gaston does not disappoint
By Judy T
Diane's characters are well developed and engaging; they weave a captivating story I struggled to put down. The historical details add depth and color, like dropping into Regency England, exactly what I'm looking for in a Regency. The romance is complicated and heartwarming, also what I'm looking for in a romance. A satisfying read.

Sacrifice of Singapore: Churchill's Biggest Blunder, by Michael Arnold

The fate of Singapore was sealed long before the Japanese attack in December 1941. The blame lay with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill who refused to listen to warnings from military advisors to reinforce defences in Singapore/Malaya, convinced the Japanese would never dare to attack a ‘white power’. Obsessed with beating German General Erwin Rommel, he poured into the Middle East massive resources that should have gone to the Far East. However when, inevitably, Singapore fell to the Japanese in February 1942, Churchill attempted to deflect criticism by accusing the defenders there of spineless capitulation.

Recently released information from the Office of Naval Intelligence in Washington reveals that United States President Franklin Roosevelt not only knew of the impending attack on Pearl Harbour but actually instigated it. Although Roosevelt promised a shield of B-17 aircraft for Singapore from Manila, General Douglas MacArthur in the Philippines had been told to do nothing until after the Japanese attacks there and at Pearl Harbour so that the United States could claim an unprovoked assault that would allow them to declare war on Japan.

This book provides an account of events during World War II as they unfolded in Malaya, Singapore and elsewhere in the world prior to the Japanese attack, as well as a detailed study of the troops on the ground attacking and defending Singapore.

Stunning Revelations
By Rooster
Although somewhat repetitive, this book's revelations about just how devious and determined Winston Churchill was will be mind changing for many readers.

History will eventually judge Churchill to be as ruthless and remorseless as his contemporary adversary, Adolf Hitler.

There seems to be no doubt that, by sacrificing Singapore, he single handedly and unwittingly rang the final death knell of the British Empire whose power he strove to perpetuate.

Unlike his illustrious ancestor who was truly a military genius, Churchill was no Marlborough only a consummate politician whose goals were total power and self aggrandisement.

Quite interesting but...
By A. Visserman
A most interesting subject which questions the behaviour of the unquestionable Mr. Churchill. There are some good arguments which are substantiated adequately. However the English is very bad and repetitive. Reads like a script in need of a proofreader.
