Sara Darling was collecting donations for the Children's Sunshine Fund throughout her bayside neighborhood, and it wasn't easy over the last weeks of summer when everyone was gone on vacation. The beach was unusually warm today and the stairs to each cottage seemed higher and higher as she moved down the beachfront area. To make that climb and then come up with no answer to her knock was demoralizing. The only people who opened the doors were vacation renters, and they weren't interested in donating to a local fund.

"Collecting," she muttered sarcastically as fat beads of sweat began a race down her spine. "Begging would be a better name for it."

Somehow she let her sister Jill talk her into doing this every year, and every year, she swore it would be the last time. She walked past her own little house and smiled. She hadn't been living in it for the last few weeks. Renovations were underway. She could hardly wait to go in and see it all changed. Just a few more days and work should be over. She could pack up her baby and move back home.

The last house on her schedule was the one next to hers. The neighbors were in Europe on their annual trek, but they did rent out to short-term vacationers. She looked at the red door and sighed, wishing she could head back to her baby right now. One last climb.

She made it and gave a short knock on the door. No response. Oh, well. She started to turn away, but a sound from inside turned her back again. What was that? A siren? An alarm? Or was the tenant playing some sort of weird music?

What the heck, it was none of her business. She started to turn away again, but the door suddenly swung open as though someone had yanked it from behind. Sara found herself staring into a pair of icy-blue eyes beneath dark, intimidating brows.

"Yes?" the man asked shortly, as though she was already late answering him.

Unaccountably she was flustered and for a moment, she couldn't remember why she'd come. "L..uh…"

Maybe it was because he was so darn handsome. Or maybe it was because he was looking so fierce. Possibly also in the brew was the fact that his naked torso was muscular and manly and altogether breathtaking, and the way his jeans hung on his hips was enough to give a girl ideas. That might have been a contributing factor. But whatever the cause, her mind was completely blank.

"Hey, you're a woman," he announced gruffly, as though it was something of a revelation to him.

She tried to smile. "So I've been told," she said, attempting light humor that crumbled and died before the words even left her lips.

His frown grew fiercer. "I need a woman. Maybe you can help me. Come on." Reaching out, he grabbed her wrist and pulled her into the house, letting the door slam behind her.

"Wait a minute!"

"No time. All hell is breaking loose. Come on. Quickly."

Truth be told, she was pretty sure she would have resisted with a bit more spunk if it hadn't been for the oddly disturbing noises coming from the very room they were dashing toward. Curiosity was strong here, and it was rewarded. He threw open the double doors and ushered her into a little piece of madness.

The noise was overwhelming. Something was rotating and banging against the wall. Some form of food sizzled and spit on the stove, and thick waves of suds poured out of the dishwasher. A cat had climbed halfway up the inside of the screen door and was howling for escape. The refrigerator door stood open, creating an annoying electronic warning buzz. Meanwhile cans of soda were slowly rolling out and hitting the floor. Now and then, one burst open and shot carbonated beverage across the walls. A cloud of black smoke was emanating from the toaster and the smell of burning bread was in the air.

"You see what I mean?" the man shouted above the din. "Where do I start?"

Whatever was sizzling on the stove suddenly burst into tall orange flames, which shot toward the ceiling. She gaped. The gates of hell might have looked something like this.

Sara took it all in and suppressed the scream of horror that wanted to push its way up her throat. This was no time to panic. She had to be cool, calm, collected.

But she wasn't perfect. "Oh, my goodness…what?" she cried, knowing there was going to be no answer until disaster had been headed off at the pass. "Are you crazy?"

He spread out his hands and shook his head.

"Help," he said.

She looked at him. He was actually waiting for her to tell him what to do. She gulped. He wasn't the type. She knew that instinctively. But here he was, asking for assistance—from her. Help indeed!

She pushed back the panic and tried to think clearly. Wait. She knew all these items intimately. The situations, taken one at a time, were all things she'd dealt with before. Darn it all, she could handle this. Suddenly she realized it was true. She could take command. Why not? He was obviously clueless.

She grabbed his arm. "Okay," she shouted in order to be heard above the din. "Turn off the dishwasher. I'll take care of the fire."

He turned to look at it. The flames appeared fiery, leaping higher every minute.

"You will?" he said doubtfully.

She didn't waste any more time. The lid to the frying pan was lying on the floor. She reached down to grab it, took a deep breath and plunged forward, firmly slamming it down on the pan, smothering the flames almost instantly. Quickly turning the knob for the gas, she doused its fuel. And then she took a deep breath of relief.

"Hey," he said, looking impressed.

"The dishwasher," she reminded him, jerking her head in that direction. They were going to be swimming in suds in no time if he didn't stop the flow. She could just picture the two of them waltzing across the slippery floor and landing on their backsides.

"Right," he said. He actually looked like he knew what he was doing so she headed for the washing machine at the far end of the kitchen. It was doing a spin cycle, but it was unbalanced and creating a terrible noise as it bounced around. Reaching out with a strange new confidence, she snapped off the juice. Like a crazed windup toy coming back to sanity, it began to wind down its banging cascade.

"How do I turn this thing off?" he was calling to her as he peered at the knobs and buttons on the dishwasher.

So she'd been wrong. He had no idea what he was doing. But wasn't that obvious by now? She strode over and slapped the off switch as she passed, never missing a beat, on her way to the refrigerator. There, she caught the last two cans before they hit the floor, unended them, placed them on a shelf and closed the door.

The awful noise from the washing machine had stopped. The sizzle was dying down in the frying pan. The refrigerator alarm had faded away and the suds were slowing down.

She looked at the toaster. A black cloud still hovered over it, but nothing new was burning. At least he seemed to have unplugged it on his own, so that was taking care of itself by now.

However, the smoke alarm it had probably triggered was shouting a warning over and over. "Evacuate! Evacuate! There is smoke in the basement. Evacuate!"

She looked at him for an explanation and he shook his head. "There is no basement," he told her. "The thing's gone crazy."

"How do you turn it off?" she asked him, knowing there had to be a way and knowing at the same time that he wasn't going to know what that was.

"You got me."

She hesitated. It was up so high, she couldn't fan it with a towel like she usually did with hers. But something had to be done. It was getting louder and louder, as if it were angry they weren't paying enough attention. She looked around the room and saw a broom. Grabbing it, she placed it in his hand.

"Kill it," she said.

He almost laughed. "You're kidding."

She shook her head. She was feeling a little wild. "You're taller. Swing at it with the brush end of the broom. That might do it. If not, do you have a gun?"

He did laugh this time, but he swung at it, forcing air into its core and finally, like a gift, it stopped yelling.

"Oh, my gosh," she said, sagging against the counter. "What a relief."

"Almost done," he said, turning to look at the cat that was still clinging to the screen door and howling at the top of its lungs.

"Is he your cat?" she asked, looking at the poor terrified thing with its claws stuck.

He shook his head. "Never saw him before in my life. He must have been hiding in here when it all began."

She nodded. She'd thought as much. She'd seen him around the neighborhood for ages.

"Okay. You're going to have to help me. This is going to be a two-part play."

He nodded, watching her. "Just tell me what to do."

She glanced into his eyes, expecting a touch of ridicule. He was the sort of man she would have thought would be ready to put her back in her place by now. But, no. His eyes were clear and ready. He really was waiting for her to tell him what to do.

For some reason, that made her heart beat faster. She scanned the room. "We'll need a towel," she said.

He turned and grabbed one from a pile of dirty clothes in front of the washer. It looked as though he'd just emptied a duffel bag right there. He handed her the towel and she regarded the cat. The only way she'd ever managed to take her cat—when she had one—to the veterinarian was by wrapping him firmly so that no claws were exposed. But that was a cat who knew and loved her. This one was a stranger. She only hoped she didn't end up a bloody mess when this was over and done.

"Okay. I'll grab him. You whip open the door."

"It opens to a back porch," he warned her. "You want me to go all the way through that and open a door to the backyard?"

"Absolutely," she said, nodding. "Okay, here goes."

She drew in a deep, deep breath, muttered a little prayer and lunged for the cat. He saw her coming and yelled a threat, a deep, vibrant howl. If he'd been free to fly, he would have done it, but luckily his claws were stuck just enough so that he couldn't move.

The next part was tricky. She had to get him wrapped really well and do it fast, but at the same time, she didn't want to hurt him and his claws being stuck shifted from being an advantage to being a problem. She threw the towel around and hugged him, lifting slightly to loosen his claws. Somehow it worked out fine. Only a few claws continued to stick, and then only for a few seconds. As he came loose, she wrapped his paws quickly and clamped down tight. He howled and struggled but she gritted her teeth and held on, carrying him quickly out as the man opened the doors for her.

The cat was strong and he'd almost worked his way out of the towel by the time she hit the backyard and she didn't get to put him down as gently as she would have liked. But she hardly saw him at all. In a flash, he was gone. She looked around and tried to catch her breath. Then she turned and saw the man staring at her in wonder.

"Wow," he said. "You're incredible."

She stared back at him, surprised. He meant it. But she thought about it for a second. She sort of was, wasn't she? She'd handled all this pretty well, if she did say so herself. Now that things had calmed down, she couldn't believe that she'd been able to maintain that sort of control. She'd moved smoothly, with purpose and determination.

That really wasn't much like her. Hey. She was pretty proud of herself.

As for him…well, what on earth was that all about, anyway? She shook her head.

"How could you get so many things wrong at one time?" she asked, still amazed at what they'd just experienced.

He gave her a crooked grin that didn't seem to reach his eyes. "Pretty amazing, isn't it? I don't know. I just seem to have a talent for failure lately."

"I doubt that." She rejected his explanation out of hand. No, he had the look and feel of a man who did just about everything right. Only—today things had spun out of control for a bit. Interesting.

They were standing in the backyard and neither of them seemed to have any interest in going back into the kitchen. She shuddered when she thought of it.

"Seriously," he said. "I've spent most of my time living in hotel rooms or tents over the last few years. I've lost the knack of civilization."

She wanted to laugh but he wasn't even smiling. "Surely you didn't grow up in a cave," she said.

"No." He raised his bright blue eyes to meet hers. "It was more of a hut. And after my mother died, we didn't live much like modern people do. My father caught game and fished and we lived off that. People called us the Wild Ones in my town. I resented it at the time, but looking back, I guess we deserved it."

She couldn't look away from his brilliant blue gaze. He had her mesmerized. She could see him living rough, like a twentieth century native. All he needed was a horse and a blanket and off he would go.

But the twentieth century was over and the modern world wasn't very open to living like a wild one. Very deliberately, she took a step backward, as if she could somehow make a move out of his sphere of suggestive influence by putting more space between them. It didn't work, and she found herself smoothing back her sleek blond hair like a woman primping for an encounter.

Ouch!

Nice Read
By The eBook Investigator
This was a good book, but as the other 3-star reviewer noted there was a lot of angst and way too much whining. It could have easily been a 4.5-5 star book if the heroine had not appeared not-so-bright in the way she handled things and her whining just got so old that it was irritating.

Sara Darling is in the process of adopting her baby niece after the mother was killed in an auto accident. She has fallen in love with this bundle of joy and is desperate when she is notified that the father is actually alive.

Jake Martin, the baby's biological father, who has been presumed dead after a capture while on a mission, returns from a POW camp. He finds out he is a father and has petitioned to get his daughter.

This read is good enough to recommend, but if you become aggravated with heroines who whine a lot, don't see reason, and act out in not so smart ways, you may want to skip it. As for me, I was quite frustrated most of the way through.

good but...
By reading mom
Don't believe the description of this book. Heroine has started adoption of her deceased half sisters child, ten months old. Has had child for 6 months, baby calls her mama, suddenly "daddy" escapes from a POW camp in Asia, off record, he was an army ranger. Only knew sister for a week right before he went off, came home found her letters, started making calls, and suddenly he the better option?? They don't get married until the last chapter, there is TOO much angst, too much whine. How could he possibly be the better option? Also, how much emotional trauma are you going to inflict on the baby? Also, no epilogue, ending kinda stunk.

Marriage for Her Baby by Raye Morgan is a good read. Ms Morgan has delivered a well written book. Sara and Jake's story is loaded with drama and great characters. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from Raye Morgan in the future. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

I purchased a copy of this book at a library sale.

The pungent odor of manure and smoldering wreckage clogged Anna's throat. As she coughed, she tented her hand over her eyes to shield them from the lowering sun. Stalks and stalks of corn swayed under brisk winds, masking the point of impact where the singleengine plane plummeted into the earth. An unmistakable desire to scream overwhelmed her. She clamped her jaw to quell her emotions. She had to hold it together for now. Swallowing hard, she tried to rid her mouth of the horrible taste floating in the air. Across the country road from her parked vehicle, first responders fastened the straps to secure the crumpled plane to a flatbed truck.

Turning her back, she flattened her palms against the window of her car. She closed her eyes as the world seemed to slow to a crawl. Tears stung the backs of her eyes. Her brother was dead. She was alone.

Anna turned around and leaned back against her car. She ran a hand across her damp forehead. It was unusually hot for early October in western New York. The heat rolled off the asphalt, scorching her cheeks. The bold blue numbers 977 stood out on the tail of the plane, remarkably unscathed among the heap of metal. Her brother had sent her a photo of the plane a few weeks ago. He had been so proud of his purchase. She had thought he was crazy. Pressing a hand to her mouth, she realized she had never responded to his email. She had been so wrapped up in her job as a high school counselor at the start of a new school year. Now it was too late to tell him anything.

Her brother had always been there for her when it truly counted. Now only one thing remained for her to do. She closed her eyes. Dear Lord, please welcome my brother into Your arms. A tear tracked down her warm cheek.

"Anna Quinn." A male voice sounded from behind her. Swiping at her wet cheeks, she glanced over the hood of her car, surprised to see a tall gentleman striding toward her with a confidence normally reserved for those in law enforcement. Her legs felt weak and she took a deep breath to tamp down her initial trepidation. His dark suit fit his broad shoulders impeccably but seemed out of place among the uniformed first responders dotting the countryside. The intensity in his brown eyes unnerved her.

"Yes, I'm Anna." Dread whispered across the fine hairs on the back of her neck, but she kept her voice even. Her brother was dead. How much worse could it get? Foreboding gnawed at her insides. Past experience told her it could always get worse.

"I'm Special Agent Eli Miller." She accepted his outstretched hand. Warmth spread through her palm. Self-aware, she reclaimed her hand and crossed her arms tightly against her body. Thrusting her chin upward, she met his gaze. The compassion in his brown eyes almost crumbled her composure. She wondered fleetingly what it would be like to take comfort in his strong arms. To rely on someone besides herself.

Heat crept up her cheeks when she realized he was waiting for some kind of response. "You called me about the crash," she said.

The call was a blur, yet she had recognized the soothing timbre of his voice. She had barely gotten the name of the town before she hit End and sat dumbfounded in the guidance office where she worked sixty miles away in Buffalo. She had left without explaining her emergency to anyone in the office.

Anna's chest tightened. "How did you know to call me?"

The deep rumble of the flatbed truck's diesel engine fired to life, drawing the man's attention. The corners of his mouth tugged down. "Your brother asked me to call you."

Anna wasn't sure she had heard him correctly over the noise of the truck as it eased onto the narrow country road. She tracked the twisted metal of her brother's plane on top of the flatbed truck until it reached the crest of the hill. Then she turned to face him. Goose bumps swept over her as the significance of his words took shape.

"When…?" She hesitated, her pulse whooshing in her ears. Had she misunderstood? Was her brother in a hospital somewhere? A flicker of hope sparked deep within her. "When did Daniel ask you to call me? My brother's…dead?" Rubbing her temples, her scrutiny fell to his suit, his authoritative stance. The world seemed to sway with the cornstalks. "You told me he had been killed."

Concern flashing in his eyes, the man caught her arm. "Yes, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to mislead you. Your brother died in the crash." He guided her to the driver's side of her vehicle and opened the door. "Here. Sit down."

Anna sat sideways on the seat, her feet resting on the door frame. "When did you talk to my brother?" She stared at the agent's polished shoes, trying to puzzle it all out. Finally, she met his eyes. "Was he in trouble?"

"Your brother and I talked last week." Special Agent Eli Miller rested his elbow on the open door. "Daniel told me to call you if anything should happen to him." He seemed to be gauging her expression for a reaction.

Anna scrunched up her face. "If anything happened?" She pointed to the field. "Like if he was killed in a plane crash?"

"I don't think he could have predicted that, but yes, he asked me to call you." He reached into his suit coat pocket and pulled out a worn business card with a familiar logo on it. She straightened her back. Years ago, after she had landed her first job as a high school counselor, she had dropped the card into a care package for her brother stationed in Iraq.

"Daniel gave you that? I don't understand." She rubbed her forehead, wishing she could fill her lungs with fresh air—air without this horrible smell.

"He wasn't only worried about his own safety." He never lifted his pensive gaze from her face. "He was worried about yours."

"My safety?"

"Has anything out of the ordinary happened lately?"

Anna bit her bottom lip. Her mind's eye drifted to the strange note she had found on her car after school last week. She shrugged. "Someone left a note on my car. It was nothing." She struggled to recall the exact words on the note. "I think it said, 'You're next.'"

"Did you report it?"

Anna laughed, the mirthless sound grating her nerves. "No…I'm a high school counselor. A few faculty cars had been egged the week before. That's all it was." She scooted out of the car and brushed past him, turning her back to the crash site. "I took the job to help kids. If I ratted them out every time they looked at me sideways, they wouldn't trust me." Goodness knew where she'd be if her high school counselor hadn't reached out to her.

"Anything strange besides the note?" The concern in his voice melted her composure.

Tears blurred her vision and she quickly blinked them away. "Other than the occasional disgruntled student—who is harmless, I can assure you—I live a pretty boring life."

"Is there anyone you want me to call for you?"

"No," she whispered, staring over the cornfields. An uneasiness seeped into her bones. Her brother tended to be the paranoid one, not her. But she couldn't dismiss it. History told her things weren't always what they seemed. "Can I see your credentials?" Anna met his assessing gaze; flecks of yellow accented his brown eyes. She turned the leather ID holder over in her hands. Special Agent Eli R. Miller. It seemed legitimate.

"You met my brother in person?" She studied him, eager to read any clues from the smooth planes of his handsome face. She wanted to ask: Did Daniel seem okay? Was he thin? Dragging a hand over her hair to smooth the few strands that had fallen out of her ponytail, she was ashamed she didn't know the answers. Ashamed she had grown estranged from her big brother. Dear Lord, please forgive me. Let me find peace through this nightmare.

Special Agent Miller hiked a dark eyebrow. "Yes. We talked briefly a week ago. I had some questions concerning his return to Apple Creek."

Anna jerked her head back. "I don't understand. He was in Apple Creek working on his photography. Why would the FBI be concerned about my brother's whereabouts?" Foreboding mingled with the acrid fumes hanging in the air.

"Your brother went to Genwego State University, right?"

"Yes." She furrowed her brow. "He dropped out his senior year. What does that have to do with anything?"

"I'm working a cold case. I've been re-interviewing people who lived in the area ten years ago."

"Was my brother able to help you?"

"No. But when I met with him, he was worried about his safety and yours. I had a sense he was somewhat relieved I had contacted him."

"Do you think I'm in danger?"

They locked eyes. He seemed to hesitate a moment before saying no.

She reached into her car and pulled out her purse. She dug out a new business card. Holding it between two fingers, she offered it to him. "May I trade you?"

He accepted the new card and handed her the old one. She flipped it over. In her handwriting on the back she had written: I'm only a phone call away. The faded ink was water-stained, but the message was clear. Yet the phone calls between her and her brother had become few and far between.

As she slipped the old business card into a pocket of her purse, the clip clop clip of what sounded like a horse reached her ears. She froze as a horse and buggy made its way along the country road. A man in a brimmed straw hat gently flicked the reins, urging the horse on. Tipping his hat, he seemed to make direct eye contact with the FBI agent as he passed.

Outlined against the purple and pink hues of the evening sky, the buggy maintained its steady progress until it crested the hill and disappeared. Anna made a full circle, taking in her surroundings, including the vast cornfield that greeted her brother's demise. She had been so focused on the crash site—on her distress—she hadn't noticed a neat farmhouse at the top of a long driveway across from the cornfields. A white split-rail fence ran the length of the property. A buggy, the same style as the one that had passed, sat next to the barn a hundred feet or so from the house. The early-evening shadows muted the details, but she realized something she had missed in her distracted state. "An Amish family lives here."

Special Agent Miller nodded, seemingly unfazed. Obviously he wasn't likely to miss such specifics. Besides, he had been in Apple Creek before now.

"My brother's plane crashed on an Amish farm? Ironic." A nervous giggle escaped her lips. "The very community that shuns most technology has one of man's modern marvels plummeting to earth on their soil."

Awareness heated her face when she found him regarding her with a quizzical look. "I'm sorry. I tend to talk too much when I'm upset." Her gaze drifted back toward the crash site, hidden by the tall cornstalks. "Thank God no one on the ground was hurt."

Special Agent Miller nodded but didn't say anything. His economy of words wore on her patience. Fisting her hands, she resisted the urge to slug the information out of him.

Crossing her arms, Anna narrowed her gaze. It wasn't beyond a law enforcement officer to lie to get what he wanted. She had learned that the hard way. "Why are you really here, Special Agent Eli Miller?"

The pain in Anna's eyes spoke volumes despite her display of false bravado. Eli refused to add to her burden, but his conscience didn't allow him to flat-out lie, either. "As I said, your brother's name came up in regard to a ten-year-old cold case." The words rang oddly distant in his ears. This wasn't exactly any case.

"Is…was—" she quickly changed tense "—Daniel in some kind of trouble?" Her pink-rimmed hazel eyes pleaded for the truth.

"Ma'am." A baby-faced police officer emerged from the cornfield carrying a green garment. "I understand you're the deceased's sister." Nodding, Anna's eyes widened. "This was in the plane." He held out what looked to be an army jacket.

She grabbed the garment and hugged it to her chest. "Thank you." The officer tipped his hat, respectful of her loss.

"We need someone to identify the body." The officer tapped his fingers nervously against his thigh.

Anna dropped her head and covered her mouth with her hands. "I don't know…."

"Where's the sheriff?" Eli asked. "I thought he'd be out here."

"No, sir, I'm handling this one." The officer tucked his thumbs into his belt and looked at Anna. "We really need you to identify the body, Miss Quinn."

Growing impatient with the officer's insistence, Eli stepped forward, partially blocking Anna in a protective gesture. "I knew the deceased. I'll do it."

Anna lifted her head. "This is something I need to do." Her voice broke over the last few words. "Where.?" Her gaze drifted toward the cornstalks as if she imagined traipsing through the field and finding her brother's bruised and battered body on the ground.

The officer's wary gaze moved to Eli, then back to her. "The morgue is at Apple Creek Hospital. I can take you. It's getting dark and it's easy to get turned around on these country roads."

"Let me drive you." Eli placed his hand on her trembling arm.

Anna nodded, the corners of her mouth pulling down. "Is it okay if I leave my car parked on the main road?"

Eli took her keys, their fingers brushing in the exchange. Anna's eyes snapped to his and he smiled reassuringly. "Let me move your car off the road."

After he moved her vehicle, he guided her with a hand at the small of her back to his SUV parked in the Amish family's yard. No one was outside the neat farmhouse. Just as well. He had all the information he needed for now. The officer in charge had informed him no one on the ground had been hurt in the crash. Thank God.

Eli opened the car door for Anna. Her long lashes brushed her porcelain skin as she ducked into the vehicle. With his hand still on the door handle, his focus drifted to the familiar farmhouse. A young girl emerged from the house, her pale blue gown rustling around her ankles as she sprinted across the grass toward the building next door. The Amish girl reached the neighboring house without so much as turning her bonneted head. Longing for a simpler life filled him.

Squaring his shoulders, Eli strode around the front of the vehicle. The case he was working on had never been easy. The death of Daniel Quinn was an unexpected complication. But even though he was dead, Eli still had to get answers. For the family. For himself.

Plain Great!
By Carey Baldwin
Alison Stone proves that great suspense comes in all flavors. I adored PLAIN PURSUIT even though I don't usually read sweet suspense. This gem of a story set in Amish country has all the ingredients I crave: twists, turns, well-drawn characters, and of course nail-biting suspense. The writer has also given us insight into a faith and culture we don't normally have access to. It's just a plain great read, and written with a fresh, wonderful voice. You won't want to miss it. My thanks to the author for providing a review copy. I'm so glad I got a chance to read this book.

PLAIN PURSUIT
By Alexa Verde
I believe PLAIN PURSUIT is a Love Inspired Suspense debut for Alison Stone, and it is a great debut. PLAIN PURSUIT has the right balance of suspense and romance, and I enjoyed reading about Amish culture, the world so different from ours that at the same exists side by side with it. The information about the Amish was not intrusive but provided an interesting background to the story.

I also liked that the internal conflicts of both hero and heroine are well-defined. To find closure, FBI agent Eli Miller needs to solve the cold case (spoiler alert!) - the disappearance of his little sister Mary that happened many years ago. School counselor Anna Quinn, who just lost her brother to a plane crash near Eli's parents' farm, needs his support. Eli needs Anna as well - she might help him solve the mystery as apparently her brother might have known something about Mary's disappearance. Emotions run deep, especially guilt. Anna blames herself for not returning her brother calls before he died. Eli blames himself letting his sister out of sight and thus for her disappearance. He's also estranged from his parents, as he'd left the Amish world and now only occasionally visits. Anna and Eli are drawn to each other, but what if Anna's brother is to blame for Mary's disappearance?

Will Eli believe in God again? As Anna's life is repeatedly in danger, will Eli be able to protect her? Will he find the closure in the simple world where answers are anything but simple? Will Anna clear her brother's name? PLAIN PURSUIT is a great read, and I hope to see many more books from this author.

Plain pursuit
By Clare O'Beara
A small plane crashes into a cornfield near Buffalo NY. Anna Quinn's brother was the pilot and an FBI Special Agent finds her and tells her that her brother had previously asked him to call her if anything happened to him. Anna thinks it is ironic that the plane crashed onto an Amish farm, but she has greater concerns on her mind, like identifying the body.

Anna learns that a girl was in the plane too and is badly injured. Anna's partly in shock and would have a long drive home, so Agent Eli offers her room for the night with his parents, who are also Amish. Eli decided to leave the community and just pays occasional visits. Anna regrets not having talked more to her brother. Eli is investigating a cold case of a little girl who died ten years ago, and her brother might have witnessed something that night. Now it's too late to ask him... and Anna's not universally popular.

Given the circumstances we get a lot of reported events; discussions rather than actions. The first few lines are confusing as Anna sees "where the single-engine plane plummeted into the earth." This makes it seem as though Anna is viewing the crash, when past perfect, which Americans don't seem to understand, would have clarified that "the plane had plummeted" some time previously. Anna is concerned when she sees two young boys bouncing as a buggy travels on the road; no seat belts here. While the Amish don't favour higher education or getting involved in policing, Eli calls in the FAA to investigate the cause of the plane crash, and the dead pilot's keen photography is questioned.

We don't even notice the romance element creeping up on us until suddenly we're thinking of Anna and Eli as making a good couple. While Eli is accused of being obsessed with his sister's death, finding the truth is how he develops forgiveness to whoever harmed her. This is Alison Stone's first time to write an Amish romance story and it makes a very interesting background for PLAIN PURSUIT.

It travels well, but still there's nothing quite like hearing Irish music in Ireland. Not in big concert halls or grand arenas, or even the popular taverns on the tourist route, but in the small pubs in remote areas where the locals habitually gravitate for those informal sessions that invariably develop into a serious social occasion universally known as the craic. For those who play it, it's not a style of music, but a way of life, producing its own culture and characters. After 25 years visiting Ireland both as a music writer and a tourist, Colin Irwin goes in search of the craic. He talks to some of the leading Irish musicians like Christy Moore, Donal Lunny, Paddy Moloney, Martin Hayes, Andy Irvine, Cara Dillon, Paul Brady and Frankie Gavin about their experiences and they direct him to places where the craic is mightiest. This is the story of his journey into Ireland's musical soul and the extraordinary characters he meets along the way. But Ireland, being Ireland, nothing ever goes quite according to plan...

It Was Interesting, But Not What I Expected
By Teresa Ramseur
I first developed at an interest in this book, back when it came out in 2003, however I could never find it in print, so I was very happy when I found the ebook in the Kindle store, and I purchased it right away. And while it was intersting, and at times funny, I did wonder if maybe the poor author should have called it In Search of a Bed instead, as he certainly spends a lot of time looking for one. And while I know that is a part of the experience, here, at least for the author and readers as well, I think. That certainly seems to be what he was going for. But I feel that Mr. Irwin missed the mark on this, as somehow I expected this book to be more about Ireland's musical history and such, not the hotel rooms and their said availability or the lack thereof, in Ireland.

Why We Build: Power and Desire in Architecture, by Rowan Moore

In an era of brash, expensive, provocative new buildings, a prominent critic argues that emotions—such as hope, power, sex, and our changing relationship to the idea of home—are the most powerful force behind architecture, yesterday and (especially) today.

We are living in the most dramatic period in architectural history in more than half a century: a time when cityscapes are being redrawn on a yearly basis, architects are testing the very idea of what a building is, and whole cities are being invented overnight in exotic locales or here in the United States.

Now, in a bold and wide-ranging new work, Rowan Moore—former director of the Architecture Foundation, now the architecture critic for The Observer—explores the reasons behind these changes in our built environment, and how they in turn are changing the way we live in the world. Taking as his starting point dramatic examples such as the High Line in New York City and the outrageous island experiment of Dubai, Moore then reaches far and wide: back in time to explore the Covent Garden brothels of eighteenth-century London and the fetishistic minimalism of Adolf Loos; across the world to assess a software magnate’s grandiose mansion in Atlanta and Daniel Libeskind’s failed design for the World Trade Center site; and finally to the deeply naturalistic work of Lina Bo Bardi, whom he celebrates as the most underrated architect of the modern era.

From Booklist
Architecture resides at the intersection of wealth, power, and art. No wonder then, that it can result in hubris. In this account of why architects and, to some extent, their clients build what they do, architecture critic Moore never shies from skewering those whose designs were left wanting. He praises favorite designs, such as Zaha Hadid’s London Architecture Foundation (Moore was director of the foundation) and Lina Bo Bardi’s inspired Museu de Arte de São Paulo, and accompanying photographs help drive home his points. Moore provides a world junket of architecture, from Dubai’s palm-shaped islands and massive towers to Paris’ Pompidou Centre, London’s exclusive One Hyde Park, Barcelona’s Casa Mila, and New York City’s World Trade Center. Only Chicago gets short shrift, unless you consider the Farnsworth House by Mies van der Rohe in Plano, Illinois, part of Chicago. One chapter covers why architects are frequently hypersexual. Perhaps, as Moore later claims, “Architecture was the lubricant for the penetration of the skyline.” It’s brash, and opinion at times overtakes the book’s premise. But what could be more appropriate? --Laurie Borman

Review
“[A] lively account. . . Moore’s deftly chosen and analyzed examples range from Alberti’s Tempio Malatestiano and Jamaa el Fna “square” in Marrakesh to Manhattan’s High Line. This is a highly engaging. . . vision of architecture’s emotive and pragmatic powers.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Thoughtful and elegantly written, Why We Build will appeal to anyone with an interest in architecture, and the egos, power struggles and human relationships behind the creation of our surroundings.” (The Spectator)

“Intelligent and cultured... Astringent and subtle.” (The Independent)

“With unfailingly fresh insight. Moore decrypts the ideological narratives of buildings with the same fluency he brings to bear on materials, forms and spaces: today’s architectural criticism rarely seems so humane or intelligent.” (Sunday Telegraph)

“A fascinating work of love, intellectual curiosity and endurance…Suggest[s] the possibility of a more grown-up and subtle way of thinking about our architecture. (Literary Review)

“Supremely ambitious…[Moore] writes with economy, clarity and wit. The prospect of 400 pages in his presence is not an unhappy one.” (Building Design)

“Studious and serious, with meaningful insights on where we are going in the future. . . . In today’s world of flip journalism, Rowan Moore is refreshing.” (Frank Gehry)

“A vivid account. . . Stimulat[es] the reader.” (Wall Street Journal)

“Rowan Moore. . . can build: He is trained in the craft himself. He also knows how to write descriptively and deliciously. . . An engaging, joyous read. . . Moore’s writing is lithe and sensual. . . His delight in the subject is everywhere and infectious.” (Cleveland Plain Dealer)

“[A] lively, wide-ranging and thought-provoking new book . . . . Devastatingly funny if deeply disturbing. . . . No other newspaper architecture critic [is] as sharp an assessor of the built environment as Moore.” (New York Review of Books)

From the Back Cover

In an era of brash, expensive, provocative new buildings, a prominent critic argues that emotions—hope, power, sex, our changing relationship to the idea of home—are the most powerful force behind architecture, yesterday and (especially) today.

We are living in one of the most dramatic periods in modern architectural history: a time when cityscapes are being redrawn on a yearly basis, architects are testing the very idea of what a building is, and whole cities are being invented overnight, both here in the United States and in exotic locations around the world.

In this bold and wide-ranging new work, Rowan Moore—former director of the Architecture Foundation, now a leading architecture critic—explores the reasons behind these changes in our built environment, and how they in turn are changing the way we live in the world. Taking as his starting point dramatic examples such as the High Line in New York City and the outrageous island experiment of Dubai, Moore then reaches far and wide: back in time to explore the Covent Garden brothels of eighteenth-century London and the fetishistic minimalism of Adolf Loos; across the world to assess a software magnate's grandiose mansion in Atlanta and Daniel Libeskind's failed design for the World Trade Center site; and finally to the deeply naturalistic work of Lina Bo Bardi, whom he celebrates as the most underrated architect of the modern era.

Provocative and personal, iconoclastic and transforming, Why We Build is that rarest of things: a book about architecture that is also, on every page, a book about people—those chosen few who design buildings, and the rest of us, who use them every day.

Illuminating Our Environment
By Karen J. Dahood
Moore, a trained architect and former director of the Architecture Foundation in London theorizes about the relationship of buildings to emotions. As a critic, he calls his contemporaries on their mistakes, and is humanistic in doing so, saving his praise for those (too few) who have honored the context of their projects. Most of all, he points to the success of projects that honor the people they serve, that are quietly inserted into the life there is.

Highest in his echelon is Lina Bo Bardi, an Italian-born Brazilian who, decades ago, designed an art center that simply blended into Sao Paulo’s Trianon, a public park. Lower down is One Hyde Park, a set of “harsh and assertive” blocks of apartments selling at 15 to 140 millions of pounds to foreign investors, and spoiling the look of Knightsbridge as well as access to park views. Lowest is Dubai where spectacular and fantastic “show-off” towers rise above imported beaches and the nasty “crisis in the drains.”

Moore takes us around the world and across time, to discuss the visions that build pyramids and world fairs, the hope that designs housing to accommodate chronic poverty, the open mind that enables futuristic technology. He comments on the failure of the “big roof” concept (think “airports”), and success of the simplest laundry (think “shaded pool”). He observes Manhattan’s contentious rebuilding the World Trade Center simultaneous to the collaborative re-purposing an abandoned railway track as a linear park.

Moore is amused by but concerned about starchitect power plays, names that dominate the profession, some who will squash opposition. He recalls his own stumbles in working with the amazing Zaha Hadid, who was commissioned to design new quarters for the Architecture Foundation on a “sliver” of land near the Tate Modern. Her daring idea quadrupled the budget, caved in to practical considerations (such as difficulty getting equipment through traffic); and eventually was canceled when the stock market fell.

This 422-page tour through our built and imagined environment is strenuous, but it is led by a likable as well as knowledgeable guide.

Fresh look
By John Morris Dixon
Only a fraction read to date, but impressed.
Examines interesting, often offbeat, situations. Comes to strong, convincing conclusions.
Brilliant use of English (those Brits!). Sometimes goes overboard with colorful wording.
Recommended to anyone with interest in architecture or urban development.

For more than a quick visit
By Mitchell
I felt compelled to write a review for this book as it not only served me well but is itself not served by its only other review.

The other review concerns a previous edition, so I'll grant that my edition is likely better in some respects. Having stayed in Prague for a relatively longer time (a still-short four months), though, it's worth pointing out that this is neither a vacation guide nor a list of "just getting by" phrases. It's a fairly in depth look at what to expect from a stay in the Czech Republic - the people, customs, and language in which you will hopefully immerse yourself.

It's been a while since I was in Prague so I can't honestly remember each bit of the book. I do remember, though, that it

1) Helped me manage my expectations. Most of the students in my program were frequently met with disappointment when the Czechs they met were so "unfriendly." Many retreated to the dorms almost full-time, swinging from unrealistic optimism to dejected apathy within a few weeks. Reading this helped me appreciate that the cultural differences that can make an American feel discouraged are opportunities to learn. It's really easy to throw your hands up in exasperation (in fact, if I remember, the author does recommend taking time to yourself to recharge and relax) but persistence and remaining open to new experiences is essential.

2) Taught me to consider myself and my way of life as just being one of many, and certainly not the best. This really paid off, as I made more friends than I thought I would and had some it-seemed-really-deep-at-the-time conversations with people from all over the world. Definitely the book's biggest benefit as it gave me the most lasting memories.

3) Taught me little tips and tricks to help navigate every-day life - everything from public transit and shopping to drinking etiquette and good insults. The language section was not in-depth but still quite helpful.

The author certainly did not intend this to be read by people only staying for a short while, and although he may also not have meant it for people only studying abroad for a semester it still helped me a lot. If the above seems tacky and long-winded, it's because my stay was surprisingly wonderful and this book was a big contributor to that. I recommend it to anyone who wants more than just a semester off from "real school" but is realistic enough to not expect to fully assimilate in a short while, with no effort.

Great book for both first-time visitors and re-visitors!
By Bradley Heisler
This is a great book. I have been to the Czech Republic seven times, but there was still a great deal of helpful information contained in this book. The section on business dealings was very interesting. I also wish I had read some of the ordering food/menu chapters before some of my early trips. The helpful guides to specific menu items are invaluable. The country history is also very enlightening, allowing me to understand more of the background of the people I visit there. This book will is still a great resource, even after reading cover-to-cover. I have no doubt that I will refer back to it.

Nicely written
By TangoMango
I am considering a move to the Czech Republic so my husband can rejoin his family in our later years. This book explained in great detail some of the cultural differences I've already experienced on my visits there. The author does a great job of setting a tone of "it's different, not weird" throughout the book and I think that's key when living in another country. It's THEIR culture, not your own. Adjust! :)
