The Secret of the Scarecrow

Surprise in Store
“Guess what, class?” Mrs. Ramirez said. “We have a special guest today.”

Eight-year-old Nancy Drew smiled as she sat up straight behind her desk. She loved special guests almost as much as she loved solving mysteries. But who was the well-dressed woman standing next to Mrs. Ramirez?

Nancy’s best friend Bess Marvin tugged gently at Nancy’s reddish blond ponytail. “Who do you think she is, Nancy?” she whispered.

“I may be a detective,” Nancy whispered back. “But I don’t have a clue.”

Nancy was lucky to have both of her best friends in her class. Her other best friend, George Fayne, sat a few desks down. She was too far to trade whispers but close enough to trade smiles!

“My name is Mimi Franklin,” the mystery guest said. “And I’m the owner of Darcy’s Department Store.”

“Wow,” Nancy said under her breath. Darcy’s was the biggest store in River Heights!

“Has anyone here shopped at Darcy’s?” Ms. Franklin asked.

Nancy’s hand shot up. Her new back-to-school shoes were bought at Darcy’s. She looked around the classroom to see all hands up. All except Leanne Hudson’s.

“You’ve never shopped at Darcy’s?” Ms. Franklin asked Leanne.

“No,” Leanne Hudson said. She added quickly, “But Hudson’s Apparel is having a sale on suitcases and duffel bags!”

Nancy got it. Leanne’s parents owned Hudson’s Apparel, a smaller store across the street from Darcy’s. Why would she shop anywhere else?

“Ms. Franklin is here to tell us about her special surprise,” Mrs. Ramirez said. “Go ahead, Ms. Franklin.”

Nancy sat up even straighter. What could it be?

“Darcy’s is about to decorate their store windows for fall,” Ms. Franklin explained. “There’ll be pumpkins, colorful fall leaves, and a scarecrow.”

Ms. Franklin gave a big smile and said, “Mrs. Ramirez is a friend of mine, and she tells me how creative this class is . . . so how would you like to make our scarecrow?”

Excited whispers filled the room.

“What kind of scarecrow?” George asked.

“Any kind,” Ms. Franklin said. “As long as it’s no bigger than a nine-year-old and is wearing clothes from Darcy’s.”

Tommy Maron’s hand shot up. “Does Darcy’s sell superhero capes?” he asked.

“Uh . . . no,” Ms. Franklin said.

“Phooey,” Tommy grumbled.

Mrs. Ramirez explained the next step: “Each of you will draw an idea for the scarecrow. Then Ms. Franklin will pick the best one for their window.”

Nancy smiled over her shoulder at Bess. A contest!

“Once I pick a winner, I will choose the outfit at Darcy’s that best matches that design.”

“You can work in teams,” Mrs. Ramirez said. “But no more than three.”

Perfect! Nancy thought. She, Bess, and George were already a team—a team of detectives who called themselves the Clue Crew.

“Is everybody ready to make a scarecrow?” Ms. Franklin asked.

“Not me,” a voice in the back said.

Everyone turned to see Harvey Mueller.

“Scarecrows are scary for a reason,” Harvey said. “Haven’t you guys heard of Jake McStuffings?”

“Jake Mc-who?” Kevin Garcia asked.

“Jake’s a scarecrow who wears baggy overalls and a big straw hat,” Harvey said in a hushed voice. “Every fall, Jake leaps off his pole to wander the streets of River Heights.”

Most of the kids snickered. Harvey was always making up scary stories!

“Quit laughing!” Harvey said. “Jake is for real!”

Mrs. Ramirez clapped her hands for attention.

“Okay, class,” Mrs. Ramirez said. “Let’s go quietly to the art room so we can begin.”

The kids formed a line near the door. Nancy stood with Bess and George. She frowned when Deirdre Shannon stepped behind her. Deirdre was spoiled and usually got whatever she wanted. What she wanted now was to win the contest!

“I have the best idea for a scarecrow,” Deirdre bragged loudly. “But I’m not telling.”

As they filed out of the room George whispered, “I don’t know who’s scarier—Jake McStuffings or Deirdre!”

“I heard that, Georgia Fayne!” Deirdre snapped.

Nancy watched George’s dark eyes flash. Nobody used her real name except her grandmother—and Deirdre Shannon!

The art room had its usual paint-and-clay smell as the class filed in. Nancy, Bess, and George ran to an easel set up with paper and colored pencils.

“What should our scarecrow look like?” Nancy asked.

“Totally fashion forward!” Bess said.

“How about a computerized scarecrow?” George suggested. “He can wear blinking lights and maybe talk!”

“It’s a scarecrow, not a robot!” Bess argued.

George heaved a sigh. “Sometimes I can’t believe we’re cousins, Bess.”

Neither could Nancy. Bess had blond hair and blue eyes and loved clothes more than anything. George had dark hair and eyes. She loved computers . . . and clothes, too—as long as they were comfortable enough to do cartwheels in.

“Here’s my idea,” Bess said. She quickly drew a scarecrow. Over it she drew a dark red coat, black leggings, yellow boots, and a hat decorated with flowers.

“Pretty!” Nancy swooned.

“Not bad,” George admitted.

When everyone was done, Ms. Franklin checked out the drawings. Nadine Nardo, Kendra Jackson, and Marcy Rubin designed a sleepover scarecrow wearing colorful pj’s. Peter Patino, Quincy Taylor, and Kevin Garcia were proud of their scarecrow wearing sports clothes and sneakers.

“After our scarecrow is in the window,” Quincy explained, “he can be the mascot for our soccer team—the Green Monsters!”

Next Ms. Franklin checked out Harvey’s sketch. His scarecrow looked just like Jake McStuffings, of course. Leanne’s scarecrow was nothing but a stick figure.

Nancy couldn’t wait for Ms. Franklin to check out their scarecrow. But she wasn’t the only one. . . .

“Look at my Hollywood scarecrow, Ms. Franklin,” Deirdre called. “Isn’t she glam enough for the red carpet?”

“Very nice, dear,” Ms. Franklin said with a quick glance. She then breezed past Deirdre to Nancy, Bess, and George’s easel.

Ms. Franklin studied the scarecrow in the flowered hat and yellow boots before flashing a huge smile. “That outfit is fabulous!” she cried. “And we have clothes just like that at Darcy’s.”

She then turned to the class and said, “You all did an amazing job, kids, but I believe we have a winner.”

“Yippee!” Nancy cheered.

“Not fair!” Deirdre snapped while Nancy, Bess, and George high-fived. “They’re detectives—not designers!”

“Now we’re designing detectives.” Bess smiled.

After the class quieted down, Mrs. Ramirez explained that they would build the scarecrow on Friday before the dismissal bell. That was only three days away!

“Darcy’s will have the most stylish scarecrow ever!” Ms. Franklin declared. “Thanks to Nancy, Bess, and George.”

“Yeah,” Deirdre muttered. “Thanks a lot.”

Nancy, Bess, and George didn’t have time for sore losers like Deirdre. They had just won a major contest—and that called for a milk-and-cookie celebration!

“Ready? Go!” Hannah called out.

Nancy, Bess, and George picked up their glasses of milk and began to drink. Until Hannah said—“Stop!”

The girls giggled as they quickly put down their glasses. They loved playing Hannah’s stop-and-go game when they drank milk with their cookies.

Hannah Gruen was more than just the Drews’ housekeeper. She had been just like a mother to Nancy ever since Nancy’s own mom died, when Nancy was three. Hannah gave the best hugs and baked the most awesome oatmeal-raisin cookies!

“I like our scarecrow,” George said between chews. “But whatever happened to regular overalls and straw hats?”

“Overalls and straw hats?” Bess said, rolling her eyes. “George, that’s so Wizard of Oz.”

Nancy was about to take another sip when her puppy barked loudly in another room.

“What’s up with Chocolate Chip?” Bess asked.

“Maybe she doesn’t like being named after a cookie,” George joked.

Nancy, Bess, and George found a still-barking Chip in the living room, her paws against the windowsill.

“She’s barking at something outside,” Bess said.

“It’s probably a deer,” Nancy said. “There are lots of deer around here in the fall.”

The girls peered out the window. It was getting dark early.

“That doesn’t look like an animal to me,” George said.

Nancy looked closer until she saw what George meant. A small, shadowy figure was dancing across her front yard wearing baggy clothes and a big hat!

“Who was that?” Nancy said as he ran away.

“You mean what?” George said slowly. “Baggy clothes, huge hat—I think we just saw a scarecrow.”

“Yeah.” Bess gulped. “A real live scarecrow!”

kid friendly spooky
By Claire Chevere.
Except for one or two books, I have been a HUGE fan of this series for my budding 6 year old detective daughter. This book was a lot of fun to read. It had just a hint of spookiness to it without actually being scary and without having anything like monsters in it. So as with 99% of the other books in the series, I give it a huge thumbs up.

Love these stories

My daughter loves the Nancy Drew series and the fact that they're eligible for AR points. I liked that I could buy the series for the Kindle and it automatically figured out which we owned, so I didn't re purchase those. Just wish it loaded them in order.

Furtive glances across the ballroom are not helping to ease Lydia's state of shock—the man who once uttered a marriage proposal as one might remark upon the weather has returned. But when he stuns her with a second, outrageous but now wickedly delicious proposal, it is clear that despite the rumors the rake from her past has not reformed!

About the Author
Annie Burrows love of stories meant that when she was old enough to go to university, she chose to do English literature. She wasn’t sure what she wanted to do beyond that, but one day, when her youngest child was at senior school, she began to wonder if all those daydreams that had kept her mind occupied whilst carrying out mundane chores, would provide similar pleasure to other women. She was right… and Annie hasn’t looked back since!

'Who is that man you are staring at?'

Rose's question snapped Lydia straight out of her state of heart-fluttering, dry-mouthed, weak-kneed tumult.

'I was not staring at anyone.'

She'd managed to remember she was supposed to be setting an example for her stepdaughter, and behaved with as much circumspection as she'd ever been able to achieve at the age of eighteen. She'd watched him surreptitiously, in a series of thirsty little glances, knowing that gazing at him directly, with her heart in her eyes, would be fatal.

Though not only for herself, this time round. Poor Rose had enough to contend with, during her first Season, without the behaviour of her stepmama adding fuel to the fire. So far, people were treating her as though she was a perfectly respectable widow. To her face, at least. But a woman's reputation was a fragile thing, and she knew—oh, yes, she knew—that there must be talk. How could there not be?

'Yes, but you do know him, don't you? The handsome one. The man over there, talking to Lord Chepstow and his friends.'

'Oh, him,' said Lydia airily, striving to conceal how guilty she felt at having been caught out. Sometimes, Rose reminded her of her own chaperon, Mrs Westerly. Both of them noticed everything.

'Do not waste your time in that direction,' the eagle-eyed woman had warned her, when she'd noticed her doing exactly what she was doing tonight. 'The entire family is atpoint-non plus. Yet again. They have a habit of marrying heiresses to pull them out of the mire. Not that this particular Hemingford is showing any signs of wishing to give up his bachelor lifestyle just yet. But you mark my words, when the time comes, he will do as his forebears have always done.'

'Yes, I do know him, slightly,' she admitted. 'That is the Honourable…' honourable? Hah! Not so as you'd notice '…Nicholas Hemingford.'

'Oh, do tell me all about him.'

'There isn't much to tell,' said Lydia, blushing at the outright lie.

For she'd fallen head-over-heels in love with him. In spite of his reputation. In spite of her chaperon's dire warnings. Like a moth to a flame, she'd been completely unable to withstand the pull of that lop-sided, slightly self-deprecating smile of his, never mind the mischievous twinkle in his blue, blue eyes.

She hadn't stood a chance when he'd decided, for his own typically eccentric reasons, to turn the full force of his charm upon her.

She mocked her younger self for feeling as though he'd thrown her a lifeline, for it had turned out to be no more than a gossamer thread of wishful thinking.

Which had snapped the moment she had to put it to the test.

'I danced with him once or twice during my own Season,' she told Rose, striving to make it sound as though it had been a trivial matter.

'And you have never forgotten him,' observed Rose with typical astuteness.

'No.' She sighed. And then, because if she didn't give Rose the impression she was being open with her, she would never let the matter drop until she'd wrung the very last ounce of the truth from her, she admitted, 'He is not the kind of person one forgets. He is so…unique.'

'Really? In what way?'

'Well, for one thing, he was an incorrigible flirt,' she said tartly. 'I used to watch him regularly reducing the prettiest girls in the room into giggling, blushing confusion, then saunter away while they all sighed after his retreating back. Usually straight over to the plainest, most unprepossessing of the wallflowers drooping on the sidelines, where he would make her evening by leading her into a set of country dances.'

'Well…that was kind of him.'

When Lydia frowned, Rose added, 'Wasn't it?'

'I do not think kindness forms part of his character,' she said repressively. 'It just amused him to set female hearts a-flutter. His real interest was always gambling. No doubt what he is doing now,' she said, indicating the group of men who had all subtly shifted position to include him in their number, 'is arranging to meet them in the card room later.'

'But…' Rose was frowning '…if he only danced with the wallflowers, how is it—?'

'I was quite ill, if you recall, by the time I met your father. My chaperon insisted I attend every event to which I'd received an invitation, in the hope I would somehow make a conquest. Which wore me down. So I was not in looks.'

What an understatement! Mrs Westerly had insisted she apply rouge to disguise her pallor and rice powder to conceal the shadows under her eyes. It had made her resemble a walking corpse. Or so the charmed circle surrounding that Season's reigning beauty had sniggered, as she'd walked past.

The night she'd tumbled so hopelessly in love with Nicholas Hemingford, she had been, indisputably, the most desperately unhappy female in the place. Her Season had started out badly and gone steadily downhill. And after overhearing the cutting comments about her appearance, she'd started to try to edge her way out of the ballroom, desperate for some respite from the heat, the crush, the overwhelming sense of failure. Otherwise he might never have noticed her.

Just as he had not noticed her tonight. He was sauntering away from the group of men now, heading unerringly for the furthest corner of the ballroom, where a rather plump young lady was sitting somewhat apart from the others, looking a bit forlorn.

Oh lord, he was doing it again.

The plump girl's face lit up when he bowed over her hand. Lydia knew just how that girl felt as he escorted her across the room to the set which was starting to form. She would hardly be able to believe that a man as handsome as Mr Hemingford had actually asked her to dance without any coercion from the matrons who sometimes prompted the younger men to do their duty by the girls who lacked partners. Her heart would be fluttering, her soul brimming with gratitude. Pray God this one didn't mistake his casual fit of knighterrantry for anything meaningful and get it broken.

'Why do you suppose,' said Rose thoughtfully, 'he only dances with plain girls?'

'Well, he would tell you,' she replied, 'that everyone deserves to enjoy themselves when they attend a ball, no matter what. He would say that he hated having to look at long faces, and if nobody else would do anything about it, then he would.'

'But you don't think that was true?'

'Oh, no.' She laughed a little bitterly. 'Once, he actually admitted that there was no point in asking any of the eligible females on the premises to dance, because their chaperons would not have granted him permission. He was considered too dangerous.'

'Dangerous?' Rose's eyes widened. 'And was he?'

'Oh, yes.' To the peace of mind of lonely, desperately unhappy females, anyway.

She inhaled sharply. Then breathed out slowly.

There was no point in getting angry about the way he'd made her yearn for the impossible. Nor the careless way he'd tempted her into believing it was within her grasp. It had all happened what felt like a lifetime ago.

Except that seeing him again made it feel as though it had only been yesterday.

At her first sight of him, she'd reacted exactly as she had done when she'd been an impressionable girl of Rose's age. And she could hardly tear her eyes away from him as he led the plump girl on to the floor.

Though there was some consolation in noticing she was not the only female tracking his progress across the ballroom with fascination.

For there was something about the way he moved that always drew admiring glances. While some men could manage to look impressive only when standing perfectly still, striking a pose, Nicholas Hemingford brought a kind of languid grace to the steps which had the effect of making her insides turn to molten toffee.

When the gentlemen lined up, facing her, he ended up standing practically opposite her. And though she didn't want to, she simply couldn't help taking the opportunity, while his attention was all on his partner, to take a good long look at him.

Oh, but he was just as handsome as ever. His light brown hair was cut slightly shorter nowadays, but other than that, he'd hardly changed at all. Just as fit and trim, and elegantly dressed as ever.

Typical! Why couldn't he have run to fat, or developed the raddled complexion of so many of his contemporaries? But, no—he'd managed to carry on with his dissipated lifestyle and emerged unscathed. Just as he'd always done.

She snapped open her fan and waved it vigorously before her heated cheeks. It gave her something to occupy her hands, instead of clenching them into fists and pounding them into the nearest hard surface.

The movement must have caught his eye, for his head jerked up and for a moment or two he looked straight at her.

Her heart pounded against her ribs. She lifted her chin and stared right back at him.

Yes, Nicholas, it's me. Look. I survived. And now I'm back. And what have you to say for yourself?

To her shock, and fury, his gaze slid right past her without so much as a flicker of recognition.

'It did not look as though he remembered you, Mama Lyddy,' said Rose, unwittingly touching on the bruise he'd just inflicted.

'No. Well,' she bit out, 'why should he? It has been eight years since he last saw me. And I was only one of a large crowd of insignificant females he favoured with his attentions.'

All these years, in spite of everything, she'd hugged her memories of him to herself in secret. But it looked as though he'd forgotten all about her.

Because she hadn't really meant anything to him, had she?

'Is something the matter?'

'It is a little lowering,' she admitted, 'to be so completely unmemorable.'

It was worse than that. Until now, she'd harboured a faint hope that he might have meant what he'd said, even if only for those few heady moments when he'd held her in his arms. The words he'd murmured into her ears that had made her feel as though she was clasped in a lover's embrace…when the reality was that he'd only caught her up because she'd almost fainted. And he'd been nearest to her when it happened. Anyone would have been chivalrous enough to carry her into the shade. And yet, for those few minutes it had taken to carry her into the cool interior of the house, it had felt as though he was transporting her to heaven. Feeling his arms round her, being so close she could inhale his unique scent as she burrowed her face into his shoulder, hearing him say the words she'd never believed a man like him could say—words of yearning, and possibility, that had made her heart soar with hope.

Not that hope had lasted all that long.

The moment he'd put her down, he'd backed away, his face a picture of regret.

And he'd never come near her again.

The band struck up, the gentlemen bowed to their partners, and Lydia delved into her reticule for a handkerchief.

'Mama Lyddy?'

Rose was looking at her with concern.

Lydia blew her nose rather crossly, since if there was one thing she hated it was letting her emotions get the better of her. 'That is what comes of dwelling on memories of my own Season.'

'They do not look as though they were very happy memories,' Rose observed.

Lydia grimaced. 'They were not.'

Rose sighed and glanced up at her half-brother, who was standing behind their chairs, glowering at the entire assembly.

'Was it worse than this?'

'Oh, Rose, are you not enjoying yourself?'

'How can I,' she muttered mutinously, 'when Robert is being so impossible?'

Since the orchestra was going at full pelt and they were muttering to each other behind their fans, Lydia did not think Robert would overhear, even though she suspected Rose half-hoped he would.

'I am sure he is only trying to be protective.'

'Well, I wish he wouldn't. I don't see why he would not let me dance with Lord Abergele.'

Nor had Lydia, not really. Though since she'd got into the habit of playing peacemaker between the siblings, she said, 'I expect he had his reasons…'

Rose turned to her, muttering crossly, 'He probably thinks he is just a fortune hunter.'

'Oh? Well, then.'

'But I don't care! It's not as if I have come to town to get a husband, only to find my feet in society. And how am I ever going to do that if he will keep every man who shows an interest in me at arm's length? Lord Abergele has a sister, who has the kind of connections that would be most useful. Now that he's offended the brother, I have no hope of making a friend of her either.'

And what was worse, now that he'd turned down a perfectly respectable dance partner on her behalf, Rose couldn't dance with anyone else this evening.

'I will have a word with him,' said Lydia. Not that it would do much good. He was far too much like his father, firmly believing he knew best, and expecting his family to fall in with his wishes without question.

And, yes, she conceded that it must be particularly hard for him to listen to her opinion, because she was four years younger than him. She could understand why he'd taken to treating her as though she was another of his younger sisters, rather than with the respect he should have accorded a stepmama, but it didn't make it any less annoying.

Particularly when he stood over them both, as he was doing tonight, like some kind of guard dog, his hackles rising when anyone he considered unsuitable came anywhere near his beautiful sister. Signalling to the entire world that he did not quite trust her to keep Rose safe.

At the exact moment she firmed her lips with pique, and flicked her fan shut, the line of gentlemen stepped forwards in unison, and Hemingford's eyes lit on her, briefly.

He did not smile this time, either, but he did grant her a slight nod of his head.

So he'd finally dredged up a memory that hadn't troubled him for years, had he?

Or perhaps he had recognised her before, but it had been his guilty conscience that made his eyes slide away from her. Just as he'd slid out of the room, and out of her life, after uttering the statement he'd so clearly regretted the moment it had left his lips.

'Oh, he does remember you after all.'

Rose was looking, not at him, but at her, with a perplexed expression. And she realised she was trembling. She'd become so angry at the casual way he'd broken her heart that she was physically quivering with it.

What was happening to her? For years she'd managed to preserve an outward semblance of serenity no matter what she'd been thinking. In fact, the last time she'd got so worked up she couldn't control her physical reaction had been her wedding day.

Her knees had been shaking so badly she'd started to worry she might not make it all the way down the aisle. But even so, she'd managed to lift her chin and force a smile to her lips, determined that nobody should guess how scared she was. Particularly not her husband. Colonel Morgan had frowned when he'd taken her hand to slip the ring on her finger, feeling her tremors. He hadn't liked the notion she might be afraid of him, of what she'd agreed to. So as she'd spoken her vows, she'd made secret ones of her own. That she was never, ever, going to let her feelings get the better of her again. She would keep a mask of calm acceptance firmly in place at all times.

And until tonight, she'd been able to do so.

Before she could pull herself together sufficiently to form some plausible excuse, Robert leaned down and growled into her ear, 'I quite forgot that you knew him.'

Jerk + No Backbone = Happily Ever After?
By Suzanne Rice
About 40% into the book I considered quitting reading it, but decided to stick it out. The hero, Viscount Rothersthorpe, is a jerk with a capital J. All through the book, he treats the heroine, Lydia Morgan, badly. And she doesn't get a backbone until the very end of the book to stand up to him and explain the misunderstandings from their past, and even then her backbone comes and goes. Then at the end of the book, she keeps blaming herself for not having trusted him enough when they were younger. He accuses her basically of not being a mind reader. She should have known he really did want to marry her, he really did love her. Yet, as a younger man, he kept saying over and over that he didn't want to marry, he wasn't looking for a bride, and yet it's supposedly her fault for not being able to figure out that he didn't really mean that. I would have told this guy to take a hike. Most of these books have a big misunderstanding that could be cleared up if the main characters would sit down in chapter 2 and have a good talk for about ten minutes, but then I guess that would make it a short story instead of a novel. However, this character didn't just misunderstand something. He was arrogant and demeaning and cruel and a big JERK. And the heroine meant well, but barely stood up for herself and let him walk all over her and then she blames herself for all their misunderstandings.

Our viscount and lady fell in love when they were young: he of disreputable and broke family -she had only one season to find a husband or her guardian will toss her out. He does not tell her he loves her/ too afraid she will say no with his bad Rep and she accepts a proposal from another though she loves him having no idea how he feels. He us bitter throws himself into working to save his estate. A few years later she is a widow and the meet again. Where he is still an idiot and is angry at her for the rest of the book until the very end and she explains her side of the story.she has- few secrets if her own she didn't tell him..but no reason she should since he was being unreasonable. Overall our viscount isn't too bright .

Excellent Writing; Male Protagonist Jerk
By swreader
I enjoyed the writing and the plot. The male protagonist, however, displayed verbal abuse towards someone he claimed to love. From my perspective, there is little or no difference between verbal and physical abuse. Such behavior is as completely unacceptable as physical abuse.

I do not believe that it is healthy to portray women as accepting such abuse.

Bang (Visions Book 2), by Lisa McMann

What Sawyer’s seeing might mean murder. The second “dramatic, quick-paced thriller (Kirkus Reviews)” in a series from the New York Times bestselling author of the Wake trilogy.

Jules should be happy. She saved a lot of people’s lives and she’s finally with Sawyer, pretty much the guy of her dreams. But the nightmare’s not over, because she somehow managed to pass the psycho vision stuff to Sawyer. Excellent.

Feeling responsible for what he’s going through and knowing that people’s lives are at stake, Jules is determined to help him figure it all out. But Sawyer’s vision is so awful he can barely describe it, much less make sense of it. All he can tell her is there’s a gun, and eleven ear-splitting shots. Bang.

Jules and Sawyer have to work out the details fast, because the visions are getting worse and that means only one thing: time is running out. But every clue they see takes them down the wrong path. If they can’t prevent the vision from happening, lives will be lost. And they may be among the casualties…

From Booklist
At the end of Crash (2013), 16-year-old Jules Demarco saved many people’s lives, including that of her now boyfriend Sawyer Agotti. Unfortunately, she also transferred her visions to him, and so a scene is playing on repeat in his mind: there’s a gun and 11 bangs. The visions quickly grow in intensity, and Sawyer and Jules don’t have much time to intervene and prevent a grisly school shooting (which, sadly, feels all too topical). In between, there’s drama with Jules’ family—she is supposed to steer clear of Sawyer, son of her father’s rival—and her sexual awakening (although no actual sex). The stakes seem higher this time around: there are more lives at risk, less information to go on, and the pace moves at a faster clip. Fans of the first novel, by the popular author of the Wake trilogy, will, alongside Jules, Sawyer, and Jules’ brother, Trey, race against the clock. This readable mystery contains romance and suspense, and the ending ensures there are more visions to come. But who is next to see unimaginable things? Grades 7-10. --Ann Kelley

Bang One
It’s been over a week since Sawyer kissed me and told me he was seeing a vision now, and it’s all I can think about. I can’t wait to get out of this apartment, which I am tethered to until Monday—that’s when the doc said my internal injuries will be healed enough so I can go to school again. My older brother and best friend, Trey, has been great, of course, slipping notes to Sawyer for me and delivering replies back to me. But for some reason Sawyer won’t explain his vision on paper. “It’s too . . . frightening. Too gruesome. Too . . . everything,” he wrote.

And me? I’m sick about it.

Absolutely sick.

Because it’s my fault. I was so relieved when my vision ended—no more snowplow crashing and exploding into Angotti’s restaurant, no more body bags in the snow, no more Sawyer’s dead face. After weeks of that stupid vision taunting me, and after nearly getting killed because of it, I was naive enough to think it was all over and I’d get to live a happy life. Relatively, anyway. Under the current parental circumstances, that is.

But then, once I got home from the hospital, Sawyer sent me that note. He had to see me, he said. That night, 2:00 a.m. And I wanted to see him, too. I eased my broken body down the stairs and we stood in the snowdrift surrounded by breathy clouds and he kissed me, and I kissed him back, and it was the most weirdly amazing feeling. . . .

And then the amazingness of my first kiss was over. He pulled away and looked at me, his gorgeous green eyes filled with fear, and his voice shook. You know that billboard?

Those words haunt me.

Obviously I was not only psychotic enough to have a vision, but I managed to give the stupid vision disease to the one person I was trying to save.

It’s beyond horrifying, sitting here knowing he must be experiencing the worst kind of frustration and pressure to act on the vision and—Did he say “gruesome”?

Let me say it one more time. Sick. That is what I am.

And so very sorry.

I rack my brain trying to figure out how this could have happened. Was it because he hugged me on the street the night before? Because he held my hand afterward in the hospital? Maybe there’s some kind of physical transference going on. I have no idea.

I have done something horrible to the boy I love, and I don’t know how to stop it.

All I know is that I need to get out of this hoardhole before I lose my mind.

Oh, wait.

I really loved getting back into this world
By Nicole
I really loved getting back into this world. I was absolutely taken by the first book because it reminded me so much of final destination but on a less gruesome scale. I really enjoyed Jules and her quirky family, and I enjoyed being pulled into her new romance with Sawyer. You can check out my review of the first book here.

While this book doesn't pick up exactly where the last one left off, I understand why that was done for plot purposes. It would have been hard essentially writing about Jules sitting around her house recovering from her injuries rather than going to school or doing anything at all fun or meaningful. I liked that the book picked up with her finding her way back into school trying to navigate how things were going to work now that she had her Romeo and Juliet relationship with Sawyer.

I will admit that this one might be a little harder to read than the first since this one focuses around a shooting in a school. I really loved how the cover reflected that fact. I loved how much more we got to experience her relationships. While we didn't really learn more about the characters, we were brought more on the inside of how they interact with one another rather than being told tidbits about their history.

This book continued with the trend from the first book where there are periodic lists of 5 which I still thought were fun interesting ways to break up the monotony that straight chapters can bring. This was a short, quick read, that had me gasping as I read. At one point, my boyfriend tried to ask he a question while I was reading and I was only able to give him a shocked face because of the part that I was at.

The way that this book leaves it off is that there is clearly going to be another book which really thrills me. I wasn't sure when I started this book if it was going to be part of a two book series or if it was going to be trilogy, I really don't even know now other than that the way that it left off, there is surely going to be another one. One that I cannot wait to get a title and cover.

Even better than Crash!
By kolb88
Lisa McMann has done it again. Crash was so amazing that I can't even put words to how much I loved the book. I didn't think it was possible but Bang is even better. There are stakes in Bang. In Crash all it took was stopping a snow plow. In Bang Sawyer and Julia have to stop a shooting. I am just amazed at well this series grabs you and keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

Bang picks off where Crash ends. You find out that now Sawyer has the visions of a shooting that will take place. As they get worst Sawyer and Julia undercover the details of what will take place and when. Same like Crash, Julia's brother, Trey, helps understand the visions. In Bang you also see more of Julia's sister, Rowen. I love her. She is smart and brings comedy to the novel.

Bang also goes deeper into the reationship with Sawyer and Julia. Julia discovers love...well and sex. Not sex exactlly but how deep love can go.
Should I go on? If you haven't figured out by now if you should read this then I don't know what else I can say. Lisa McMann should be on your must buy list. Her novels leave you hanging and leave you desperately wanting more. I can't wait to read the next in the Vision series, heck anything by McMann.

Pleasant follow up to Crash
By KVB99
Book two of the Visions picks up a short while after the events of Crash with Jules recovering from her accident and about to return to school. As we know from the end of the first book, Sawyer is now having visions and the only person that understands is Jules. Most of the story involves Jules and Sawyer trying to figure where and when a horrible massacre is going to occur, and then find a way to stop it. This is a hard enough job, but it’s made even tougher since both their families still hate each other and don’t want Jules and Sawyer to see each other.

If you liked Crash, you’ll find Bang very enjoyable. This is a short book and a quick read. On the plus side, Jules and Sawyer are intriguing characters, and in this book, we get to see much more of Rowan and Trey. On down side, the plot lacks depth and nuance—it’s very predictable. Also, the romantic tension in book 1 is lacking here.

SOS Lusitania, by Kevin Kiely

One of the most dramatic seafaring tragedies ever …

Thirteen-year-old Finbar Kennedy runs away from home in Queenstown (Cobh) to follow his sea-captain father onto the Lusitania. On the return journey from New York, Finbar works as a deck-hand, and running messages gives him a lot of information. He begins to understand that something strange is happening. But what can he do? And whom can he trust?

Fact is stranger than fiction: In May 1915 the huge liner, the Lusitania, sank off the Cork coast near the Old Head of Kinsale. This happened during the First World War. But, unlike the Titanic tragedy, this was no accident. The ship was torpedoed by a German submarine. Rumour had it that there were spies, arms and gold on board the Lusitania. These rumours were true.

Book 3!!!
By Kindle Customer
I followed up book 2 immediately with book 3. I was anxious to see what happens with Tessa whom we met in book 2. Let me tell you, I was not disappointed. Tessa's story has a shocking twist that I was not expecting. Unlike some books, I could not guess what was coming or where the story was going. Loved it!!!

Romantic Thrill Ride
By Miss Bluestocking
What a pulse-pounding, thrill-a-minute, sexy ride of a novel! FBI Agent, Tessa James is convinced that the person sending anonymous letters to the Savannah field office--letters inscribed with one person's name and a creepy variation on the children's nursery rhyme Ring Around the Rosie--is guilty of something. But with nothing but the letters and the names to go on, she can't convince her boss to let her investigate further. Finally, though, he decides to give her one week, provided she takes consultant, Matt Buchanan along with her. Since she and Matt have a not so great history together, she's not thrilled but at least she gets to investigate the creepy letters. The mystery itself is an intricate Russian nesting doll of a case, each discovery more shocking than the last. And the chemistry between Tessa and Matt is near flammable. I loved this book, not only because it kept me guessing until the last page, but because it gave me the romance + mystery fix I was craving. If you like Karen Rose or Laura Griffin, you'll love this one.

Exciting thriller from a wonderful author
By Loves All Books
This book is one of the most compelling and frightening thrillers I've ever read. And although I get scared easily, I found the relationship between FBI agent Tessa James and her sexy PI partner Matt Buchanan so romantic in spite of the unbelievable danger they face, that I couldn't put this book down. Ms. Diaz's books just keep getting better and better and she is one of my few automatic buys whose books stay on my keeper shelf!
