Amazon.com Review
In spite of the fact that L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) is one of the most popular stories in America, relatively few people have actually read the book. It's well worth the effort! Young readers expecting rainbows, Munchkin songs, and wicked witches with burning brooms will instead find a complex country populated with mocking Hammerhead men, dainty people made out of china, and fierce monsters with heads of tigers and bodies of bears. Through the fantastic land of Oz ramble Dorothy and her trusty companions--Toto, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Lion--each seeking his or her heart's desire. Although the premise of the book and the 1939 movie is the same, the book--as so often is the case--delivers a far more subtle and intricate plot. A child's imagination will run rampant in these pages as one extraordinary creature after another leads the motley crew into strange and magical adventures. (All ages) --Emilie Coulter

From Publishers Weekly
Viennese illustrator and Hans Christian Andersen Medalist Lisbeth Zwerger takes a fresh look at L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz in a large-format edition. Zwerger's fantastical, delicate, eccentric illustrations bear no resemblance to the vision of the movie; they make the classic tale new again. And readers can view the Emerald City through a pair of green-tinted glasses, provided in the back of the book.

From School Library Journal
Gr 3-6–These hefty, oversize editions of childhood classics include congenial paintings executed by Foreman in previous decades. The artwork is pleasant, but not really dominant here. Though inflated in size, the books employ a traditional layout of illustrated novels with thoughtful, sparing placement of pictures and uninterrupted flow of the original texts. Gentle, often humorous interpretations of characters and events appear in one full-page scene in most chapters; occasional small views and set pieces open and conclude chapters. With paintings that beautifully complement the enduring stories, these might be welcome new editions. Not visually lavish by today's standards, but still showy, they will serve as gift items or for reading aloud in some situations. Libraries with a particular interest in Foreman's work will definitely want them.–Margaret Bush, Simmons College, Boston. (c) Copyright 2010. The Correct Order of all 14 Books in the series !!
By Ellie Tyson
I know you're all wondering, "how does she know the correct order?" Is she over 100yrs old? Well, I know because my grandmother, gone for 34 yrs now, had each and every book bought hot of the presses. Inside each book, except the first, are the previous books in order. Also a couple of the names have changed a bit since they were first written but I have the Books of Wonder titles in this list.
So, here they are in correct order.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
The Marvelous Land of Oz
Ozma of Oz
Dorthy and the Wizard in Oz
The Road to Oz
The Emerald City of Oz
The Patchwork Girl of Oz
Tik-Tok of Oz
The Scarecrow of Oz
Rinkitink in Oz
The Lost Princess of Oz
The Tin Woodman of Oz
The Magic of Oz
Glinda of Oz

A true delight for Oz fans!
By Sheila L. Beaumont
This beautiful, oversize, lavishly illustrated Centennial Edition of L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" is a cornucopia of enjoyment for Oz fans. Edited by Oz expert Michael Patrick Hearn, it's annotated in a manner similar to Martin Gardner's "Annotated Alice" (Gardner contributes a preface outlining the history of the "The Annotated Wizard of Oz").
There's a hundred-page introduction, with lots of photos and color illustrations, covering Baum's life, his family, his non-Oz books, and the history of the Oz phenomenon (books, plays, musicals, movies, other Oz authors, and much more).
The story itself is reproduced from the 1900 edition. W.W. Denslow's original illustrations, including all 24 color plates, are here too. Hearn's notes are entertaining, informative and very extensive. For example, there are three double-columned pages dealing with Baum's brief one-page introduction alone!
Anyone who loves the Oz books will find countless hours of pleasure in this delightful book. It's well worth the price!

The ORIGINAL Wizard of Oz is Published
By Sam A. Milazzo
I don't own THIS particular Edition, but I will soon, and as soon as I saw it in Dymmocks, I looked through it and thought "I've really gotta get this book!" And this is why . . . .
I'm sure that there are those of you who have the annotated Wizard of Oz and/or the Dover editions of the Wonderful/Wizard of Oz (Dover has made different copies in publishing it in different ways). the Annotated Wizard of Oz may have the pictures in full-colour, but the colour plates are in 1 whole place, in the middle of the book, and that goes the same for the recent Dover Edition of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz (where Dorothy is wearing a pink dress, talking to her friends, all wearing the Green glasses). The other Dover editions of this story have the pictures in black-and-white (sometimes all, other times, a few of them) with the colour-plates in their own chapter but in black-and-white.
THIS EDITION - the 100th Anniversary Edition - is one everybody should have. It has all the pictures in colour-and-black lined with the FULL-COLOUR-Plates in their OWN PROPER CHAPTER place, e.g. "She caught Toto by the ear" in THE CYCLONE, "I am the Witch of the North" in THE COUNCIL WITH THE MUNCHKINS, etc. It even has the picture of Dorothy and Toto back in Kansas on the very final page on the book in the backboard. And when you pull off this picture-cover (the one that you see now), the actual cardboard-leather-bound cover has the EXACT SAME ORIGINAL Cover Angela Lansbury shows in "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: The Making of a Movie Classic", where the Cowardly Lion is wearing the Green glasses on the Front cover, Toto is on the spine and the back has the faces of Dorothy, the Scarecrow and (Nick chopper) the Tin Woodman in circles.
An Important Note on this story is that it Is Imaginative But it Is Not DARK as some people say. It is not scary nor is it supposed to be attempted that way in any new adaptation, nor should it always be made similar to MGM with constant references or musical scenes. This is an AMERICAN 1900 Story, it is not English/British like J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter, Tolkien's Hobbit/LofR or C. S. Lewis' Narnia - it is its own place!! Oz is a place where animals can talk, there are strange animals who are not mythical and never appeared in any other legends, wicked people are defeated by simple acts, by it accidentally-non-magical or magical, everybody is friends and the ordinary items of our world can have strong but simple magic.
Now matter how much the MGM Musical is loved, reading this book is worth it, because it explains how many of the events in Oz came to be when Dorothy arrived: how did the Tin Woodman come to be? How did and why do the Winged Monkeys obey the Wicked Witch of the West? What became of the Winkies after the WWWitch's death? Did Lion become the King of Beasts again? Naturally the musical is different from the book, but despite the change of the Kansas beginning/ending, the story is basically the same. this book only offers MORE than the movie did.
Hope you enjoyed my descriptive review. Watch out for my other Oz and Digimon reviews (by Sam A. Milazzo).

Singapore at War, by Romen Bose

Sealed off and forgotten until the late 1990s, the Battlebox beneath Fort Canning served as the British Command HQ during the war. What actually happened in this underground nerve centre of the Malayan Campaign? Drawing on top-secret documents only recently opened to research, the author investigates the workings of the Battlebox and the fascinating role it played. Having lost their “impregnable fortress” of Singapore, the British were diverted to the European theatre of war. How then, when the Japanese surrendered, did they prepare to return to their erstwhile colonies? This book goes behind the scenes to investigate the circumstances, events, and unforgettable cast of characters that led up to liberation. Finally, the book considers those who fought and died in the war, and their ways in which they have been remembered in post-war Singapore, with Kranji cemetery and memorial as the centrepiece of the efforts.

Singapore At War contains new findings which have come to light since the publication of the individual books, giving an unprecedented breadth and depth of perspective to this historical account.

Gr 4-8-This volume in the popular series does not disappoint. It focuses on science fiction and fantasy, and once again 10 of the best writers in the field contribute short stories. While appealing primarily to boys, girls who are fans of this genre will scoop it up as well. Highlights include Rick Riordan's "Percy Jackson and the Singer of Apollo," Neal Shusterman's "The Dirt on Our Shoes," and a story from recently deceased Ray Bradbury, "Frost and Fire." All of the selections are worthy, making this anthology a must purchase. Other Worlds will fly off the shelves, validating Scieszka's notion that there are no "reluctant" readers, just picky ones.-Renee McGrath, Nassau Library System, Uniondale, NYα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
The fourth volume in Scieszka’s Guys Read Library of Great Reading series serves up 10 original science fiction and fantasy stories by leading figures in the field. Each is imaginative and entertaining and, in the case of a graphic story by Shaun Tan, decidedly offbeat. But two entries are standouts: Neal Shusterman delivers a literally breathtaking story about a demi-Eden, and D. J. MacHale crafts a tale about a merciless scout with a grim purpose. Best of all, though, is a novella-length story by the late, great Ray Bradbury. Speculative fiction fans—especially tween guys—will rejoice. Grades 4-7. --Michael Cart

Great for middle grade boys!
By Candace Robinson
I'm not big on anthologies, but I will read about anything Walden Pond Press puts out (seriously love them!) and I'm pretty open minded. It's hard to review books like this but I'm going to do a few sentences for each story.

Percy Jackson and the Singer of Apollo by Rick Riordan- I've only read two Percy books and this one is clearly later on, but it's a contained story, you don't need to have read anything about him. I actually like this older, more mature Percy more though and I'm more anxious to continue the series. There are a few spoilery things, like I now know about a girlfriend who was not yet his girlfriend (where I had read to) and some other stuff, but nothing big. I think that the world aspects would be easy to latch onto for those who haven't read any of the books yet. It was also a decent length at 29 pages. I really liked it. 4 stars

Bouncing the Grinning Goat by Shannon Hale- While I like Shannon Hale a lot this story didn't work so well. It's fantasy and I didn't feel like I got enough of a look at the world to really feel it. It also felt a big disjointed to me. I didn't hate it, but it wasn't really my thing either. 2 stars

The Scout by D.J. Machale- This one was quite good. I loved that we assume one thing and then get a big twist at the end, it really surprised me. And the whole time I was reading I had no idea what to expect. This was one that we didn't need world building for so it worked very well as a short story. I wouldn't mind more of this particular story actually. 4 stars

Rise of the RoboShoes by Tom Angleberger- This story was just silly. Not really to my taste but I can see how some kids (boys in particular) would enjoy it. 2 stars

The Dirt on Our Shoes by Neal Shusterman- This is one of my favorites. This somehow had a well developed world in a very short story. It's set in outer space on a ship that's about to land after being in space for 60+ years. I really loved the setting and connected with the characters surprisingly well. I would love more of this story! 5 stars

Plan B by Rebecca Stead- This story was pretty silly, but I liked it okay. I liked the twists though I saw some things coming ahead of time. 3 stars

A Day In the Life by Shaun Tan- This is like a short comic strip. It definitely didn't work for me, but I can see how some younger readers would enjoy it. 2 stars

The Klack Bros. Museum by Kenneth Oppel- This was a pretty decent story. It had enough development to have enough of a connection with the characters. It was easy to settle into the world since it's our own and I liked what it became. I don't want to spoil, so I won't share more, but it was a good story! 4 stars

The Warlords of Recess by Eric Nylund- This was another one that's just slightly ridiculous. It works though. It's silly, but I can see how lots of MG boys would think it's hilarious so I think it's perfect for this book even though it didn't work great for me. 3 stars

Frost and Fire by Ray Bradbury-This story wasn't for me, but that's just Ray Bradbury, his style isn't really to my liking. However, I know that many will enjoy the story. While I know it's well written and is a unique concept, I'm not sure what kids will think of it. It's definitely a bit too gory for my liking but I know kids watch a lot of stuff on TV so it's up to what parents allow their children to read/watch. I would recommend this particular story to more mature readers. I know Bradbury fans will enjoy the story, so keep that in mind. It's just not my own personal style. 2 stars

Overall I enjoyed most of the stories and I liked being able to sit down and read through an entire short story. I think it's got a lot of great ones for MG boys, which is what it's aimed at. While the book says ages 8-12 and grades 3-7 I don't think I would have my 8 year old read it, nor would I donate this one to her 3rd grade class. I would say maybe 4th grade and up but 5th, 6th and 7th would probably be more along the right age range.

Great fun for sci-fi/fantasy readers
By Dorine White
First, a little about the book: Guys Read is actually a series of books that Scieszka is sponsoring in an attempt to "encourage a passion for reading among young boys, with the philosophy that boys love to read most when they are reading things they love." The three previous releases include: Guys Read- Funny Business, Thriller, and The Sports Pages.

This book includes great stories by both well-known Sci-fi authors and up-and-coming authors, including Rick Riordan, Kenneth Oppel, Ray Bradbury, Neal Shusterman, Shannon Hale and many more.

I want to mention several of the stories, but I will not be necessarily critiquing them, just talking about them. The book as a whole I will critique.

The Stories-

We start out with a hum-dinger! an original Percy Jackson short by Rick Riordan called "Percy Jackson and The Singer of Apollo". Oh boy, this one cracked me up. The humor is very in your face and I feel like Riordan just had a lot of fun writing the story. The short revolves around Percy and Grover in NYC. They are celebrating Grover's birthday when Apollo appears and "asks" them for a favor. He want them to find his missing golden singing robot before his big concert up on Mt. Olympus. The poor boys! Let's just say Percy ends up hanging off the Times Square billboard without his pants on.

Another short is "Rise of The RoboShoes" by Tom Angleberger. This is a story of just a few pages, but the humor is very quirky. Humans became lazy and created shoes that could tie their own laces with TurboBrains so they could follow directions, and TruVoices so they could talk back. Our story begins after the RoboShoes have risen in revolt against humanity. A pair of bunny slippers is leading the revolt and encouraging RoboShoe freedom. The clencher- the RoboShoes find out they aren't alone in the RoboUniverse.

Also included is a small story with pictures, almost like a picture book, but with deep thoughts. The short, "A Day in the Life" by Shaun Tan, is about a boy who lives in a snow globe. It is an odd story, but will appeal to boys. We also have "The Klack Bros. Museum" by Kenneth Oppel. This story includes a twisted museum owner who keeps the ashes of a dead boy on display. Our main character Luke, connects with the boy's ghost that haunts the ashes, and he learns how the boy died and his desire to be free. This one is perfect for kids who like a little bit of dark in their stories, but is not too scary.

Overall, a great collection of stories. I think boys and girls will love the collection. In fact, as soon as my daughter found out their was a Percy Jackson short, she claimed the book next. There is a wide variety of stories, some long, others medium, and some only a couple pages. For kids who feel overwhelmed by reading an entire book, this anthology does a great job keeping the reading quick. For book loving kids, they'll want to read it just for the fun and quirky stories, so both type of readers win.

I really hope this book is successful in drawing in some new boy readers. As a fantasy lover myself, a whole new generation loving the genre would be great. But, if your reluctant readers like sports, not fantasy, try the other anthology, "The Sports Pages". I think that when all the books are written there will be something for all.

Amazon.com Review
The first book in a beautifully produced series of five, The Field Guide sets up the story of the Grace children--13-year-old Mallory and 9-year-old twins Jared and Simon--who with their mother move into the dilapidated Spiderwick Estate only to quickly find themselves sucked into a dark and fascinating world of faeries.

Superficially, the Spiderwick Chronicles smack of Lemony Snicket, with its "true story" setup and breathless warnings ("Go away/close the book/put it down/do not look"). But Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black owe no one for the intensely absorbing world they've created. Black certainly showed fey promise in her slightly freaky debut and DiTerlizzi has weird cred to spare, from his zany Jimmy Zangwow to countless credits for the Magic: The Gathering card game.

By combining their ample skill with thoughtful art direction and demanding production values, the duo has succeeded in creating a series with irresistible appeal. Each book promises a quick read, snappy plot progression, and dozens of DiTerlizzi's imaginative pen-and-ink drawings. So if you're drawn to The Field Guide at all, you might as well save yourself the trouble and make sure you have the second book (The Seeing Stone handy. (Ages 6 to 10) --Paul Hughes

A Good Start
By J.A.
What better place to begin a children's fantasy series than a mysterious, run-down old Victorian? Anyone that knows anything about Victorians knows that they have enormous storytelling potential, as many of the larger, older ones have attics and crawl spaces galore. A perfect place for faeries, good or bad, to be hiding out, and for children to go exploring.
For a twin, poor Jared Grace seems oddly the quintessential loner - the typical setup character who sees and believes in the elements of fantasy first, but whom nobody believes. Nevertheless, it's impossible, through both the writing and the deft illustrations throughout, not to have empathy for him. I "fell in love with" Jared in the first two pages, and maintained that throughout the story, which, while short, was still lively and well paced. Jared, who characterizes himself through the narrator as aimless and not the smart one (the smart one is Simon, his twin), is the character who is determined to solve the clues he is faced with, and upon realization that their families disruption of a faerie creatures habitat is the cause of all of their weird troubles, sets the situation right all by himself.
While comparisons to Lemony Snicket are inevitable, I found more similarities to L. Frank Baum, particularly in chapter titles, such as "In Which Two Walls are Explored by Vastly Different Methods". I particuarly enjoyed the drawing of the boggart in the final scene, as it was reminiscent of Jon O'Neil's wonderful and still (in my opinion) unparalleled artistry in children's books from the Wizard of Oz series. And kids - if you haven't read all of Baum's Oz books, rush to the library or beg your parents to buy them for you here on Amazon (*grin*) for they are amazing and wonderful, and in this most delightful rennaisance of children's fantasy, should not be forgotten. More than one hundred years ago, L. Frank Baum started it all.

A book to spark the imagination
By A Mom
My 5th grade son came home from school and insisted we buy this book. The reading teacher at his school had brought the book in to his classroom and they all went wild for it. It is very imaginative with wonderful illustrations of mythical creatures and is categorized in six different areas of fantastical creatures ("Around the house and yard" i.e. brownies, boggarts, changelings, pixies, etc. "In Fields and Forests" - cockatrices, elves leprechauns, manticores, sprites, treefolk, etc. "In Lakes and Streams" - kelpies, merfolk, nixies, sea serpents, trolls etc. "In The Hills and Mountains" - dwarves, giants, goblins, knockers, ogres, etc. "In The Sky" - dragons, griffins and phoenixes and "Outside At Night" - banshees, gargoyles, phookas, and will-o-the wisps among many many others. It is beautifully illustrated and has lots of information on the fictional (or is he?) Arthur Spiderwick's adventurous travels. My 2nd grade daughter really enjoys looking at the pictures although the text is too hard for her. This is a great book for older children, especially children like my son that are reluctant readers. Its the kind of book they pick up over and over. Because my children enjoyed this so much, we recently bought Spiderwick's The Care and Feeding of Sprites which is great but doesn't compare with the Fantastical World Around You (which covers many different species of mythical creatures with detailed descriptions and information on each). Happy reading and imagining!

Captivating
By A.Guthrie
These books are proving to be rather popular at my child's school. The boys especially seem to identify with the main characters. For the average 2nd grader they are a little edgey, by 3rd they should be an excellent fit.

A superficial book about a non-issue
By Robert Duke
I think this book got published because of the Zuckerberg connection. I would have been interested in the author's perspective if she had something serious to say, but it came across to this reader as me, me, me. There was a failed attempt to wrap "all about me" in a respectable and socially useful guise of advice about living in the dot com world. It fell flat with me even though I persisted too long in trying to find something redemptive about the story.

Insightful, Relevant, but Somehow Kind of Self-Centered...
By QueenBeeBooks
If I could give 3 1/2 stars, that'd be a more accurate rating!

Mark Zuckerberg's sister is an author and media mogul in her own right. This is her first adult book (she's also published a children's book called Dot). The introductory (and mostly autobiographical) part of Dot Complicated was a little bland (and sometimes melodramatic), but as Zuckerberg moves onto Internet etiquette and commentary on our digital age, the book picks up speed. It's easy to read and relevant to us all. Despite the fact that Zuckerberg repeats over and over again that this book is for US, it seems a little self-centered at times.

Zuckerberg's goal to help people utilize and take advantage of our new technologies is a noble one, but I feel like it's a little overblown: "When explained properly, in a relatable, approachable way, it [tech] can be amazing and life changing." It's almost as if 'tech' is a new religion, promising a new world of redemption and self-control. I don't believe teaching people about what NOT to post on Facebook is a major philanthropic effort. Nevertheless, the book is full of insightful anecdotes and lessons: "I reached a point when rather than owning a computer, a phone, and a tablet, those devices were owning me...I had forgotten how to just unplug and enjoy the company of those around me. I had forgotten how to be present in the moment."

Honestly, I haven't thought too much about online etiquette, whether I should be posting what I'm posting, or how what I post affects others. Perhaps I should.

Some quotes that stuck out to me:

"A world where every object is a screen means a world of endless access to information, but it also means a world where we risk jeopardizing our relationships with loved ones if we don't look up from that screen from time to time."

"...FOMO, which stands for 'fear of missing out.' FOMO refers to the feelings of jealousy and inadequacy experienced upon seeing the impossibly awesome lives of your friends."

"Technology has completely changed all aspects of dating and romantic relationships. Countless apps and websites help people find potential mates to consider. Texting, video chatting, and social networks have created a whole new set of rules for initial courting and the early stages of relationships."

"Giving everyone a megaphone tends to create a society that favors the loud and self-absorbed. Just because a lot of people are talking all at once doesn't mean anything valuable is being said."

I received this book from a Good Reads giveaway.

All about you!
By lennyrats
From an educational standpoint regarding the use of "social media," the author offers common sense statements as to how to use each type media. I would think most people have enough common sense as to how they should abide. What I feel what is wrong with the social media is, often times their misleading statements to their "customers" state one thing, and when the customers buys into it (meaning clicking on a vague label,) it's brings them to something different that what they expected.

From my 30-years of computer application design of which I'm registered as a "Certified Computer Professional," many application today are poorly designed, which causes this expert as well as all the average laymen, much confusion as to what each of the application's functions are to accomplish. Facebook is one such application that started small and took off and now is constantly being changed ongoing (because they have an unexpected tiger by the tail.) What was true last year, is not the same today.

Personally I don't have time to parallel with their changes. I use many different applications and don't have the time to devote to Facebook. Technically, Facebook has rinky-dinky clicking methods as to how accomplish their functions. They, as well as other applications too, use gimmick terms as if we users should know exactly what they mean. Fine and dandy! Then they should include a "Terminology" portal for users to click on that describes what: time-line, poke, comments, etc, means. We should not have to guess what each term means.

In conclusion, as I read Dot Complicated, its more about Randi Zuckerman, who ends her book thanking virtually everyone in the world for her being. Is that not, "all about me?" Leonard Rattini, CCP

"Our cake is a visual masterpiece," Shari told her cousin, Carter Drayson, the artisan cake maker for Lillian's Bakery, and the black sheep of the family. They stood in a large studio kitchen with cameras in front of them. "It's by far the best cake. We are going to win this."

Shari glanced behind her to look at the four-tier champagne cake before finally setting her eyes on her nemesis Dina English's cake from Brown Sugar Bakery.

Dina was standing there, looking poised and sophisticated in designer duds, making Shari feel dowdy in her jeans and Lillian's Bakery T-shirt. But that was okay, because Lillian's was the better bakery. Not only had Dina stolen Grant Robinson, Shari's first love, and run off with him to get married, but she'd stolen Lillian's recipes for her own bakery. And Shari felt responsible.

When Shari and Dina had attended Ledgeman University together, Grandma Lillian had taken a liking to Dina almost immediately and offered her a summer job after freshman year. While in college, Dina had continued to work at Lillian's during the summers. Shari had hoped that she and Dina would work side by side at the bakery after graduation. They'd been a great team. With Shari's background in business and Dina's finesse, they would have been unstoppable. Shari would have finally risen to the top in her family instead of always feeling like a dimly lit planet among her confident, smart cousins, the real stars of the Drayson clan. But life had thrown her a curveball when Dina had left to create her own bakery.

Five years later and Shari had never truly recovered from the betrayal. How could she when Dina had married her son's father and prevented them from ever being a real family?

"We got this," Carter said confidently. He had an arrogant swag about him that Shari sometimes envied.

You Take the Cake's host came over and stood between the two bakeries and said, "And the winner is… Brown Sugar Bakery!" Applause erupted from the live audience, and Shari's heart deflated.

How can this be? Shari looked over at Brown Sugar's creation. The cake was at best ordinary.

Dina came over and laughed. "That's right, Shari. I win again."

Shari rushed over to the host of the show and grabbed his arm. "There has to be a mistake. She should be disqualified."

"Why? What's wrong?" the host asked.

"The whole world should know what kind of person Dina English is." Shari turned and glared at Dina. "She traded on our nearly four-year friendship, turned her back on my family's bakery and then stole the man I loved. You can't let her win!"

Dina smirked and gave Shari a pitiful look as she walked toward her. "You're so pathetic. Can't you see? I've already won."

Shari looked down, but not before seeing, to her horror, Dina holding her son, Andre, in her arms and carrying him away. "Noooo!"

Shari woke up with a start and her eyes popped open. She was surprised to find her four-year-old son, Andre, peering down at her. He was wearing his favorite Spi-derman pajamas and was holding his stuffed animal, Wiggles. "Mama, are you okay? Were you having a bad dream? You were yelling awfully loud."

"I must've been, baby." Shari sat upright, throwing the down comforter back off and pulling Andre into a bear hug. "I'm sorry if Mommy scared you." She glanced at herself in the mirror. The wrap she'd been wearing on her hair had come off, and her hair was a tangled mess. Add the old tank top and pajama bottoms she was wearing and it was no wonder she couldn't find a man.

"Are you sure you're okay?" Andre's expressive green eyes looked into her brown ones, eager for reassurance.

"I'm fine, I'm fine." Shari scooped him up in her arms, slid on her slippers and padded off into the kitchen to make him some breakfast.

"Can I have Cocoa Puffs?" Andre asked when they reached her large, country-style eat-in kitchen.

It might be modest to some, but her two-bedroom bungalow in Chicago's Glenville Heights was just perfect for her and Andre. Since she loved to cook, she had added modern white cabinets and appliances, including a flat-top stove, double-sided refrigerator and a dishwasher.

"Are you sure?" Shari inquired. "Because I was going to make chocolate chip pancakes, but if you'd rather cereal…" She shrugged her shoulders and waited for the response she knew was coming.

Andre shook his head. "No, I want pancakes! With lots of syrup."

Shari smiled. "Sure thing." She lowered him into a chair at the pedestal table.

She pulled the pancake mix and chocolate chip morsels out of the pantry and the milk and eggs out of the fridge. Usually, she would make them from scratch, but she needed to get to the bakery.

A couple of months ago, her grandmother, Lillian Reynolds-Drayson, had informed her children and grandchildren that she'd signed the bakery up to participate in a reality TV Show called You Take the Cake. On the show, bakeries were asked to perform culinary feats, and at stake was a $100,000 prize. Last year's winners had become overnight sensations and their bakery had gained national prominence. For two months, the entire Drayson clan had been looking at recipes and cake designs in the show's "Around the World" theme to blow the competition away.

Her grandmother had made quite a speech about how they had to stop all the backbiting and work together as a family. She indicated she would soon be passing the business to one of her grandchildren. The decision wasn't going to be an easy one. They were all qualified to run Lillian's. They'd all started learning the business from the bottom up, delivering cakes, working the dock and cleaning the store.

Shari knew she had tough competition from her cousins for the position. Shari, Drake, Belinda and Carter all considered themselves the best bakers in the shop. No wonder Grandma Lillian couldn't decide among them.

Her cousin Belinda, Aunt Daisy's daughter, excelled at everything she did whether it was school or baking. Somehow, she made it all look effortless. Belinda always dressed smartly in designer clothes and didn't go out of the house without her full makeup and her long black hair ironed bone straight. Now, she'd hooked one-time basketball pro and Lillian's baker, Malik Anthony. Belinda was now set to be the first of her cousins to marry.

Then there was Belinda's brother Drake. He knew marketing and social media better than any of them. Drake, Malik and Carter had started a blog called "Brothers Who Bake" that offered recipes and advice and was attracting a wide audience. The success of the blog had inspired them to write a cookbook that was now under contract with a major publishing house.

Last but not least, there was Carter Drayson, Lillian's artisan cake maker and a real charmer. Up until recently, her cousin had been a true ladies' man just like his father, Uncle Devon, who'd never married. But then her tall, handsome cousin had gotten hit by the love bug last month. And on top of that, Carter was the most sought-after cake designer at Lillian's. Shari couldn't help but be a little resentful of her older cousin. She, too, was an equally skilled baker and designer, but she had to admit no one could create artistry on cakes quite like him.

Shari knew she was good, but in a family of stars, it was hard carving out her piece of the pie. She was not as confident as Belinda, as technically savvy as Drake or as skilled as Carter, but she deserved a shot to run Lillian's. Her business degree was evidence of that and she had come up with the idea to package Lillian's cake mixes. But somehow her baby sister, Monica, had taken over running the cake mix business; she just had to prove to Grandma Lillian that she had what it took to be a leader.

Two hours later, Shari and Andre walked from the parking garage where she had a reserved spot to the front of Lillian's on North Michigan Avenue. Shari smiled as she always did when she saw the marble facade standing out from the other Magnificent Mile designer boutiques. Her grandparents owned the entire sixteen-story building, which included a slew of offices on floors two through sixteen, while Lillian's Bakery spanned the entire first floor.

Lillian's was written in large, gold, script lettering on the storefront windows through which passersby gazed at ornate wedding cakes and lavish cake designs. Some might say the cakes, cookies and other sumptuous desserts looked like fancy pieces of jewelry or handbags, but the best part was that they were edible.

Lillian's had been a Chicago staple since the 1960s when her grandparents had opened their first storefront in Hyde Park. Their love story was one Shari would never forget. Her grandmother, Lillian Reynolds-Drayson, was a widowed single mother whose husband, Jack Reynolds, died of a heart attack. Shari's father, Dwight, had only been a year old at the time. Grandpa Henry had arrived a few years later and patiently wooed her grandmother until she'd finally let her guard down. They were married soon after and Grandpa Henry adopted her father. As for the business, the rest, as they say, was history.

Shari couldn't help but think of that story every time she entered Lillian's. Today was no exception, even as she rushed inside because she was a few minutes late. Andre had lost his favorite toy, and they'd been unable to leave the house until he'd found it.

The store always brought a smile to her face. Her grandparents had spared no expense with the decor. It screamed opulence and elegance. Rich mahogany woodwork shined throughout the store while the crystal chandeliers sparkled like brilliant diamonds. Ribbons of copper and gold were inlaid in the glistening marble countertops and matched the ambiance of the various boutiques on the Magn...

Delicious Read

Shari Drayson has a secret that she has successfully hidden for 5 years from Grant Robinson. Grant decides to track Shari and the love of his life down after 5 years and is surprised at what he discovers, and begins to question if Shari is the the honest loving woman he fell for many years ago. Meanwhile Shari and her entire family are gearing up to participate in a bakery competition with Shari's former best friend on National TV. Will Shari and Grant be able to find love when an ex- spouse returns to the picture, a bakery competition and a 5 year old secret?

I enjoyed reading this book and Ms. St. John does a great job of finishing out the Drayson series. Shari was an insecure woman who was at first afraid to go after her man, Grant realizes he has always loved Shari and will do any thing to keep her with him. I loved how close the family was and that Shari finally stood up to her cousins. I like that this book was honest and showed that families do argue and compete with each other but in the end there is nothing but love. I do wish there was more on the romance with Grant and Shari and less on the bakery competition and family feuds, but I do think this book was an enjoyable read.

Great story! I loved the other Drayson books and this was the perfect close to this series. Shari and Grant's love story is wonderful but also sad that so many years were wasted because of hurt pride. The thing I love about reading books in a series and in order, you get a clue about what the next book is going to be about. In book two Delectable Desire when Carter went to New York and met with Grant Robinson and was thinking about where he had seen his face before and then Grant asked about Shari, I knew then that Grant was the father of Shari's son Andre and Carter figured it out as well. I was so looking forward to reading this story from that point on and it did not disappoint.

An unbelievable surprise
By D
And by unbelievable, I mean truly fantastic. I had bought part 1 in the original single issues, and my lcbs had stopped carrying it about where vol 2 begins. The art was breathtaking, and the story was an alternate universe romp that could have happened here. There aren't enough words to praise this volume. I highly recommend this book. dianefromcarroll@yahoo.com

Excellent read with intriguing plot!
By Charlie J. Wall
It's been my experience, as a fan of comic books, that Dark Horse publishes some of the best works in comics today. Arvid Nelson's Rex Mundi is no exception. If you're looking for a beautiful work of art that blends horror and mystery with historical fiction, then this will be one of the greatest reads that you will come across. I can point to this book as one of my favorite comic books series of all time. I count it as being greater than any of Alan Moore's books for entertainment value.

And some awesome twists came at end
By Idealist
Picking up on what I was saying about the first Omnibus, not sure if the switch-up in artists was intentional, but it works, in a weird way, since the story shifts into more of a two-fisted adventure. And some awesome twists came at end, which I honestly did not see coming! Arvid Nelson digs deep into the intrigue, every "resolution" leading you further down the rabbit hole. Again, I really love it.

From Booklist
This second volume in the Case File 13 series conjures up the same appealing mash-up of comedy and horror as Zombie Kid (2013). Savage begins this story just a few weeks later and provides the sixth-grade boys with a fresh Frankensteinian conspiracy to unravel. Helping them, while also annoying them, are three girls in their grade who are equally adventurous and imperturbable. Although insults fly back and forth, the two squads team up to figure out why corpses are being stolen from the cemetery and hospital. Savage skillfully mixes the perilous activity the kids get into with Nick’s active conscience and plenty of gross-out moments. There is an array of horrible stenches here, ranging from Tiffany’s overpowering perfume and Carter’s infamous flatulence to the goopy green liquid they all have to crawl through to save a friend, but each character also reveals a strength and bravery that makes this crew, at the end, smell quite sweet. Grades 4-7. --Abby Nolan

Review
The addition of the girls not only broadens the book’s appeal, but adds a humorous layer of boy-girl interaction that preteen readers will get a kick out of. Another thoroughly satisfying thrill ride. (Kirkus)

“With its mix of creepy chills and laugh-out-loud humor, Zombie Kid is the perfect book. Nick and his friends are my new favorite people.” (James Dashner, New York Times Bestselling author of The Maze Runner)

“Striking the perfect balance between rib-tickling humor and bone-chilling adventure, the first novel in Savage’s new middle-grade series is sure to please young readers looking for a thrill. It’s hard to imagine that readers (particularly boys) won’t enjoy every minute of hair-raising fun.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))
