Gotta love Uncle Sam. He carried a big stick and an even bigger ego, which was the only explanation Diego Santero could think of for the presence of an actual frea-kin' sign on the door of the Department of Homeland Security's ICE attache office advertising its presence in Panama City.

Not that Diego's ego was any less bloated than the federal stiffs who issued him a salary, but at least he had the common sense to practice discretion. Too often his life and the lives of his crew depended on it.

Diego breezed past the office's main doors without slowing, striding around the rear of the building to an unmarked entrance. Flipping the bird to the goons watching him through the security camera, he slipped his key card through the slot, verified his fingerprints on the scanner, then shouldered the heavy door open.

The first floor corridor reeked of bureaucracy—the stale odor of air conditioning and burnt coffee and the dust of constantly shuffled reams of paperwork. He peeled his sunglasses from his sweat-sticky face and tucked them in his shirt pocket, squinting up at the fluorescent lights lining the corridor's ceiling.

Most people preferred a climate-controlled office to the humid heat outside, but if ever there was a man not cut out for white-collar work, it was Diego. Thank God the U.S. Navy had offered him an alternative when he was an eighteen-year-old punk. A childhood spent under the fluorescent lights of the New Jersey public school system had been enough desk work in government buildings to last him a lifetime.

Two members of his crew met him at the base of the stairwell leading to the second-floor briefing rooms.

He nodded his greeting to Alicia and bumped forearms with Ryan. "You been upstairs yet to get a sense of what the stiffs want from us?"

Alicia shook her head. "Waiting for you."

"Chiara brothers. Gotta be," Ryan added in his deep, pensive voice.

Ryan had been Diego's right-hand man since the beginning. Before they'd signed on with ICE, they were SEALs together and had clicked instantly. Mostly because Ryan was a man of few words who let Diego run the show.

"You think everything's about the Chiara brothers, Ryan. Your brain's in a rut." Diego tapped his temple for emphasis. "You're like that dude, Moby Dick, with the white whale."

Ryan shrugged noncommittally.

Alicia, Diego's intelligence specialist and honorary sister, arched a perfect eyebrow. Stubborn as she was, she caked on the makeup and left her hair long as though to remind the rest of the crew that not only did she match them in strength, smarts and experience, but she did so without sacrificing an ounce of estrogen.

"You've read Moby Dick?" she asked.

Ryan snickered. "Naw, he's never read it."

"How the hell do you know that?" Diego asked, squaring his shoulders with mock indignation.

Ryan's lips twitched into a grin. "Because Moby Dick's the name of the whale, not the dude."

"Who names a whale? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard."

As Alicia and Ryan chuckled good-naturedly, Diego allowed himself a small smile. He never got on his crew about razzing him. With the way he was constantly asking them to risk their lives for Uncle Sam, seizing on humor whenever possible was as necessary to their sanity as their firearms.

He tipped his head toward the stairs. "Enough with the book-club chat. Let's get this briefing over with. These artificial lights are hell on my complexion."

He swiped his key card to unlock the stairwell door and preceded Alicia and Ryan to the second floor.

"SeaWorld," Ryan said behind him.

Diego pushed through the door at the top of the stairs and into another unremarkable, climate-controlled hallway. "What about SeaWorld?"

"They named a whale. They've got Shamu."

Diego stopped in front of the closed briefing room door and pivoted, gesturing his hands in a circle. "Are we actually having this conversation still, or is this some sort of freaky dream I'm having 'cause I ate too much garlic sauce last night?"

Alicia gave him a playful shove out of the way and pushed through the doorway. "Don't forget Free Willy'" she said in a singsong voice as she walked into the room.

Diego and Ryan filed in after her, nodding hello to the other two members of their team, John and Rory.

Though the stench of bureaucracy was bad in the hallway, it had nothing on the briefing room. Beige tile, white soundproofed walls and row after freakin' row of fluorescent lights on the ceiling.

The circular table that dominated the room was loaded with laptops, stacks of files and maps. A tray with a water pitcher and glasses anchored the middle. A blank projector screen occupied the far wall of the windowless space, ready and waiting for an industrious government official to start a PowerPoint presentation, no doubt. Everything a federal stiff needed to feel right at home.

The way Diego's crew stood around, shifting their weight or fidgeting with their firearm holsters, the ambiance left them as twitchy as it did him.

Thomas Dreyer, a pale-faced, pencil-pushing ICE director Diego had done business with in the past, looked up from his laptop and stood, extending his hand. "Agent Santero, good to see you again."

Diego disagreed, but until he knew what ICE wanted with his crew, he'd hold his tongue. "Sir," he said instead as they shook.

"I appreciate your team being here. Grab some refreshments and let's get started." He gestured across the room to a long table covered with pastries and coffee.

Ignoring the refreshment offer, Diego exchanged brief handshakes with the other man in the room, Special Agent Aaron Montgomery. Diego tried to keep his nose out of ICE gossip, but the last he'd heard, Dreyer and Montgomery had been tapped by Washington to head up Operation ICEWALL, the bureau's shiny new media-friendly mission to block the flow of drugs and money through Central America.

Yeah, right. Good luck with that, guys.

Despite Diego's cynicism over Operation ICE-WALL's potential for success, he understood Dreyer's and Montgomery's presence in Panama, given that the country—along with Costa Rica—was wedged between Colombia and Mexico. What piqued Diego's curiosity was why, with the entire weight of the American, Panamanian and Mexican governments backing them, and with squads of ICE agents prepared to undertake the mission's execution, they still saw fit to bring in Diego's black ops crew.

Black ops only handled the sensitive, hush-hush problems that would do more harm than good if word got out. Diego and his crew were ICE's ace-in-the-hole problem-solving and crisis-management team, executing everything from covert extractions to well-timed diversions—not overhyped, billion-dollar, multinational government projects. That is, not unless those projects had gotten out of control in a way that would be detrimental to either the government or the public's support of the operation.

Dreyer clapped his hands together. "Okay, let's get you briefed."

Thoroughly intrigued by the reason for the briefing, Diego crowded near his crew, arms folded. Dreyer consulted his notes, then flipped on the projector. His crew groaned under their breaths.

"Jesus, Dreyer. Hand me one of those dossiers."

Diego waved a hand at the table. "I can't stand another freakin' PowerPoint presentation. Where do you think we are, the Pentagon?"

Undisturbed by Diego's protest, Dreyer handed each operative a navy blue binder, then started his PowerPoint presentation anyway. A photograph of a woman's face glowed from the projector screen. Diego found the coordinating page in his dossier and stared into the woman's striking, midnight-blue eyes.

"Vanessa Crosby, age thirty. A U.S. expatriate who has resided in Panama for seven years as a senior analyst in the criminal detection department at RioBank," Dreyer said. "Yesterday, ICE intelligence analysts intercepted an email from Crosby to her boss expressing concern over a possible pattern of criminal activity she discovered within the bank's system."

"Well, that's terrific news," Diego couldn't help but interject. "Bet she makes Employee of the Month. You want me to bake her a cupcake?"

Dreyer gaped at him. Like he was caught unaware of Diego's tendency to be a smart aleck, despite that they'd worked together on and off for twelve years. Diego flashed his best "you got a problem with me?" face.

Dreyer cleared his throat and adjusted his tie.

Montgomery, sprawling in a chair, took over the briefing. "It seems that Miss Crosby has created an algorithm to track the movement of bulk cash using small deposits and wire transfers. If her program works—and we think it does—it would revolutionize ICE's coun-terterrorism efforts."

Now they were getting somewhere.

ICE had an entire department with a massive budget devoted to combating bulk cash, aka the millions of American dollars in drug and weapon revenue that crime organizations busted their tails to launder and repurpose without tipping off authorities.

Diego knew nada about algorithms or number analysis or whatever the heck this Crosby broad did for the bank, but he was personally and painfully aware of the many ways bulk cash funded terrorist activities all over the world.

"What exactly did her email say?" Diego asked. "Is it in the dossier?"

"We didn't include it because it doesn't have any impact on the mission we're asking you to perform. To sum it up, she asked her boss for permission to initiate a more expansive test of the algorithm using customer account data. She thinks she can pinpoint the exact account that the bulk cash she detected is being funneled into."

"What was her boss's reaction?" Diego asked...

OK - but nothin outstanding
By Book lover
Vanessa Crosby is a senior analyst in the criminal detection department of a major bank in Panama. Out of simple boredom and because she wanted a challenge in her life, she has created a revolutionary anti-crime algorithm, which would help the bank and law enforcement to detect illegal bulk transactions. So far so good - but what is she supposed to do with her creation?

Diego Santero is an ICE black ops agent. After a tragic incident in his life, he has devoted himself to the endless fight of making the world a better place. When he and his team is assigned to chauffeur Vanessa to a safe house, he's more than upset because this isn't something black ops do. Of course he never expected the turn the assignment and his life will take.

Although there were background information referring to the hero/ine, their character development remained shallow. I couldn't relate to the reasons why Vanessa suffered from abandonment issues, especially because these reasons were ridiculous -- in my opinion that is. Neither did I consider Vanessa's "transformation" as satisfactory.

Diego seemed a more likeable character but again, the insufficient character development didn't support him properly.

Generally, the book left the impression of sketchy work. I.e. at some point Diego advised Vanessa to keep going shouldn't he be able to follow her and to reach the safe house alone, where she would find a satellite phone with which she could call the team. So far so good. Of course Diego pulls through and they reach the safe house together. BUT there's a comination lock in the door, which wasn't mentioned before. How would Vanessa have gotten the satellite phone?

In any case, not a bad choice for some easy escape reading -- but nothing more.

Prepare yourself to smile and be captivated

Oh my gosh... I don't really know where to start with this book. I fell in love with Diego even before reading this book. So imagine my surprise when the book was actually able to back up the hype and then some. TEMPTED INTO DANGER is intense, captivating, and steamy. It had my attention from the very beginning and left me wanting more. I literally devoured the book in a 24-hour period.

Vanessa Crosby is an American that lives and works in Panama. She's uber smart and works for RioBank as a senior analyst in the criminal detection department. Vanessa, in her spare time, has created an algorithm that can track the movement of bulk cash using small deposits and wire transfers. This program puts Vanessa in the crosshairs of the Chiara brothers, Italian mercenaries who run a big business of being brokers for criminal activity.

ICE agent Diego Santero is one of the best heroes I've ever read. I have a major thing for an alpha hero who packs guns and knows how to use them. New Jersey native Diego is a cocky and confident soldier through and through. Diego (Devil) is the senior agent and team lead for one of ICE's best black ops teams. Diego's team consists of Ryan (Eight Ball), sniper Rory (Ghost Rider), sniper John (Thriller), and intelligence specialist Alicia (Phoenix).

The team's mission is simple, pick up Vanessa from her apartment and deliver her to a safe house where Diego's boss, ICE director Thomas Dreyer and Special Agent Aaron Montgomery will talk to and convince her to work with them. Something goes terribly wrong. Vanessa is kidnapped, the safe house has been compromised and not knowing who to trust, the team is forced to go their separate ways in order to regroup.

While evading those who want them dead, Vanessa and Diego fight the attraction they are feeling for one another. Their first kiss turns out to be deadly, just when it seems they are in the clear. Diego has a never quit attitude and will do whatever it takes to make sure his "asset" is safe, even if it means him dying in the process.

What I love about Vanessa and Diego is that they bring out the best in each other. Vanessa has her own issues that Diego does his best to correct and in turn makes her a stronger person who learns her self worth and finds her inner strength. On the flip side, Vanessa manages to break down Diego's self-imposed walls of armour to get to the person he is inside. Diego is all about heart and he risks his life on a daily basis for a promise he made years ago.

I mentioned before that TEMPTED INTO DANGER was intense and captivating. At times, I literally felt like I was as much a part of the action as the characters in the book. If Melissa was looking for reader shock and awe, she definitely achieved it. The book left me with questions. Unfortunately, I have to wait until January when HOT ON THE HUNT comes out, but it is definitely a book I can't wait to read.

4.5 Star Review - action-filled thriller
By Harlequin Junkie Blog
Rating: 4.5 Hearts

In Tempted Into Danger (ICE: Black Ops Defenders #1) by Melissa Cutler, RioBank anti-crime analyst Vanessa Crosby didn't realize when she created an algorithm to track cash flow in her spare time that it would put her life into danger. But that's exactly what happened when her boss found out what her mathematical mind created. It seems there is a connection with the bank and the Chiara brothers - a group of three brothers who are heavy hitters in the world of international crime. Now Vanessa's boss is demanding she hand over the algorithm, although she doesn't trust his motives. She decides she needs to investigate what she's found a bit further before handing over the information. Before she gets a chance to do so, she's attacked in her apartment and becomes part of a hostage situation, only to be saved by one of the most fearless men she's ever met.

"She was about to go off the grid with a man she'd just met, without anyone knowing where she'd be. She'd made up her mind to trust Diego implicitly, but that trust was being put to the test sooner than she would've liked."

Diego and his crew saved her life at the risk of their own. Vanessa knows she is indebted to them but is still scared as to who she can trust. She's never really had anyone in her life she could count on except herself and her best friend Jordan, so trusting that they won't leave her to fend for herself is a hard thing to do. When they come under attack again as Diego has them in sight of the safe house his superiors set up, they have to resort to his plan zero and end up in his hideout in the Panama jungle. Nothing can ever seem to go as planned for them unfortunately as they meet trouble at every turn: from pit vipers to downpours, and from rebels to indigenous tribes. Vanessa and Diego form a strong bond during their time keeping each other alive and sane. One that is formed on friendship and intense chemistry. She knows if they survive the mission she'll never see Diego again so Vanessa is determined to savor every moment they have together and to form enough memories to last her a lifetime.

"I would chase you to the corners of the earth to keep you safe if I had to. Doesn't matter if you believe me or not. That's what would happen. There is no scenario you could dream up that won't result in me protecting your life with my life."

Diego Santero is almost offended at the mission he and his ICE crew have been given. They are basically chauffeurs taking Vanessa to a meeting at a safe house with his superiors and then bringing her safely home again. Being part of a black ops team, he's used to assignments that are a bit more high risk to say the least. Diego is glad after all that he was assigned to the case when they come under fire upon arrival at Vanessa's apartment. No other team would have been able to get her out safely and on the road to the meeting like they had. Unfortunately the safe house is also compromised which leads him to believe there's a traitor among the ICE officers at command. He takes Vanessa to his hideout while his other team members go to theirs as well. Diego can't believe it, but the more time he spends with the beautiful math wiz, the more captivated he is by her. It shakes him to his core to feel this way. He is always focused on his mission and never deviates so he can keep everyone safe. With every danger they encounter, he finds himself protecting Vanessa not only because she is the "asset" in the mission, but because of his growing attachment to her. He's never thought of a life outside of black ops, but finds himself contemplating giving up his career to have Vanessa by his side every moment.

Talk about an action-filled thriller of a romance! Melissa Cutler's story kept me on the edge of my seat trying to find out what would happen next to our passionate, but unlucky, couple. Their romance played out in the steamy jungles of Panama where they hit barriers at every turn but thankfully it only helped bring them closer in their growing relationship. I loved that our heroine Vanessa is a smart-as-a-whip mathematician (think a female Charlie Epps on the show Numb3rs) and that our hero Diego loved her for her mind as much as for her body. The fact that he loved to hear her solve complex math problems out loud and got turned on by it was both funny and very sexy. ;) Diego's character was intense, honor-bound and fiercely protective of Vanessa, who had been abandoned before, and was exactly the kind of man she deserved to have in her life. I highly recommend this book if you enjoy lots of thrills and absolutely remarkable characters.

The Lord of Opium, by Nancy Farmer

As the teenage ruler of his own country, Matt must cope with clones and cartels in this riveting sequel to the modern classic House of the Scorpion, winner of the National Book Award, a Newbery Honor, and a Printz Honor.

Matt has always been nothing but a clone—grown from a strip of old El Patron’s skin. Now, at age fourteen, he finds himself suddenly thrust into the position of ruling over his own country. The Land of Opium is the largest territory of the Dope Confederacy, which ranges on the map like an intestine from the ruins of San Diego to the ruins of Matamoros. But while Opium thrives, the rest of the world has been devastated by ecological disaster—and hidden in Opium is the cure.

And that isn’t all that awaits within the depths of Opium. Matt is haunted by the ubiquitous army of eejits, zombielike workers harnessed to the old El Patron’s sinister system of drug growing—people stripped of the very qualities that once made them human.

Matt wants to use his newfound power to help, to stop the suffering, but he can’t even find a way to smuggle his childhood love, Maria, across the border and into Opium. Instead, his every move hits a roadblock, some from the enemies that surround him…and some from a voice within himself. For who is Matt really, but the clone of an evil, murderous dictator?

From Publishers Weekly
* "This highly anticipated sequel to Farmer’s National Book Award–winning The House of the Scorpion (2002) begins soon after the funeral of the drug lord El Patrón and the murder of nearly everyone who attended the event. Fourteen-year-old Matt, the dead drug lord’s clone, was originally created to provide spare parts for El Patrón, but is now the Lord of Opium.... Once again, Farmer’s near-future world offers an electric blend of horrors and beauty. Lyrically written and filled with well-rounded, sometimes thorny characters, this superb novel is well worth the wait." (June 24, 2013, *STARRED REVIEW)

From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—This long-awaited sequel (2013) to The House of the Scorpion (2002, both S & S) begins with Matt becoming El Patrón and no longer a clone. With El Patrón's death and the death of all his relatives, Matt is the new Lord of Opium and his plan is to cure the eejits, the microchipped workers of Opium, and prevent a takeover of the country. He must learn to be a tough drug lord and deal with his new status as a person, not a dispensable clone. Dangers surround the boy, and he must learn who to trust in order to save the eejits and the lives of his friends. Matt must also struggle for his own soul as he assumes power. Addressing many ethical issues such as cloning, the drug trade, human rights, and ecological concerns, Farmer shines a light on issues facing our society today and provides a fascinating look at how people deal with these concerns in Opium. Raúl Esparza shows Matt's internal struggles and brings to life the emotions and personalities of all the characters. They are well created and complex, from the jefe Cienfuegos, who destroyed people's lives while wanting to save the environment, to Listen, who struggles with emotions, religion, and friendship when she only knows science, abandonment, and terror. Farmer's novel is a reminder to stay vigilant to the problems of the world and not become indifferent. This is a well-written work with an important message for teens.—Sarah Flood, Breckinridge County Public Library, Hardinsburg, KY

From Booklist
* "Most young readers who loved The House of the Scorpion (2002) when it was first released are now adults, and today’s teen audience will need to read the first title in order to fully understand Farmer’s brilliantly realized world…. A stellar sequel worth the wait.” (June 1, 2013, *STARRED REVIEW)

Sophisticated ethical questions drive the plot
By Unity Dienes
This is a wonderful book, but I can understand why some readers feel it falls short of The House of Scorpion. In the first book, Matt's very survival is at stake, and the plot is driven by his discovery of who he is, and there are substantial mysteries that are not revealed until the end of the book. This second book is fundamentally different. Matt is not in particular danger throughout most of this book, and while he does make discoveries about his world, there's no moment of shock when the precariousness of his existence is revealed. Instead, this book revolves around his efforts to fix his native land, a project that turns out to be a lot more complicated than he thought it would be when he first set out to do so. The themes are more political and ethical , and less survival-based, than those in the first novel. For the original fans of the first novel, who are now adults, the increased sophistication and complication of Matt's world will likely parallel the changes that have gone through their lives as they have transitioned from adolescence to adulthood, and it is fair to say that this book continues the "coming of age" theme. However, for the readers who loved the first for its nail-biting story of a harrowing adventure of an underdog, this book will disappoint. For readers who fell in love with the world of Opium and compulsively want to see how Matt manages to (or fails to) fix some of its problems, the book will be every bit as interesting (if not quite as exciting) as the first.

Wonderful Sequel!
By Eric Stout
It's been awhile since I read House of the Scorpions, but it all came back to me right away when I delved into The Lord of Opium. Nancy Farmer continues the story of Matt, the clone of the nearly 150-year-old drug lord, El Patròn. When El Patròn dies, Matt becomes the new lord of Opium. He struggles to undo the regime and rescue the enslaved eejits but he's only 14 and embattled on all sides by a rival drug lord, UN forces led by a fanatic and general anti-clone prejudice. Even Matt's own right-hand man, Cienfuegos, may not be all that he appears to be. There are also a lot of interesting twists about clones, as he appears haunted by the old drug lord's ghostly presence in his mind.

Farmer's characters are distinct and life-like. In spite of his heroism Matt is a believable teenager, not a junior super-hero, and he has a teenager's problems. He loves a girl who is far away but he's also confused by his feelings for the beautiful eejit servant girl, who will do whatever he commands. He has trouble, too, in staying friends with the boys from the orphanage now that he's rich and powerful.

Matt's world comes to life in every detail--you can practically smell the desert air and hear the hum of the flying machines. But there is nothing stereotypical about this dystopia. Although Opium is a social disaster, it is also an ecological paradise and offers hope to the rest of the planet. In a way, the same is true of Matt. At first he is a despised clone, manufactured rather than born, but with the help of his allies, he becomes a true leader. The novel is poignant, startling and inspiring. I loved it.

Nice, but a notch below Scorpion
By KVB99
The House of Scorpion (THOS) was a fabulous, break through book, and so it was like opening a bottle of fine wine when I sat down to read this book. The book picks up pretty much where THOS left off--Matt, the new El Patron. Most of the story is consumed with Matt trying to live up to the new responsibilities thrust on him and undo the evil that the old El Patron did. In particular, Matt is determined to cure the eejits and find a way to be with Maria. On the plus side, the writing is excellent and the characters are generally terrific and the overall plot is engaging. Also, some new characters are introduced that are very engaging--eg, Cienfuegos. And, there are some very poignant story arcs. Fans of THOS will want to read this book and they will enjoy it. But...it's not as compelling as THOS. Some of the magic of THOS is still present, but much of it is gone, IMO. That was probably unavoidable...Matt is now lord, not lowly clone, and so we don't have that same dystopian atmosphere as THOS, where Matt struggles to find out if he's human or not in a world where most everyone despises him. Also, one of the most compelling characters in THOS for me was Maria. Sadly, until the last few pages of the book, she mostly just puts in a few cameo appearances in this book. What a waste of a great character. I will say that the ending is nicely done and, like THOS, the curtain comes down on a nice note of hope.

Love these books!
By Irishlawlass
My daughter is 6 and she loves these books. She can polish one off in about two hours. She has read just about every one in the series. It's a sweet series and holds her attention. I wish more books were innocent fun reads like this for kids. I hate the Juney B. Jones stuff with bratty kids who are mean and mouthy. The world will teach them those things faster than it should -- we don't need to shove it down their throats. So I appreciate books likes these that let little girls be little for a while longer.

From Booklist
Can Nancy Clancy predict the future? If JoJo hadn’t dropped her Magic 8 ball, it might be able to tell her. But when Nancy foresees several occurrences (Dad will bring pizza for dinner, for instance), she is convinced she has a special gift. And so wearing her neighbor’s fortune-teller-like flowy clothes and dangly earrings (clip-ons, alas), Nancy sets up shop in the school playground to offer her services at 25 cents a pop. Unfortunately, her visions become a little cloudy. The third title in the winning Nancy Clancy mystery series, this is another energetic offering—full of fancy words like boudoir—and it will have huge appeal to budding sleuths. Grades 2-4. --Ann Kelley

From the Back Cover

What she sees, however, isn't the future: she sees she has a big, big problem.

Dead Set: A Novel, by Richard Kadrey

The New York Times bestselling author of the Sandman Slim series delivers a wonderful stand-alone dark fantasy in which a young girl is caught between the worlds of the living and the dead.

After her father's funeral, Zoe moved to the big city with her mother to start over. But change always brings trials, and life in the city is not so easy. Money is tight, and Zoe's only escape, as has always been the case, is in her dreams—a world apart from her troubled real life where she can spend time with her closest companion: her lost brother, Valentine.

But something or someone has entered their dreamworld uninvited. And a chance encounter at a used record store, where the vinyl holds not music but lost souls, has opened up a portal to the world of the restless dead. It's here that the shop's strange proprietor offers Zoe the chance to commune with her dead father. The price? A lock of hair. Then a tooth. Then . . .

Review
“A dark and eerie world, a razor sharp plot, and a heroine worth rooting for make DEAD SET unforgettable.” (Kami Garcia)

“If punk and underworld mythology got into the mosh pit, it would come out something like this book; spiky and pretty with lashings of black eyeliner and its heart tattooed on its sleeve.” (Lauren Beukes)

“A fantastic supernatural horror novel with deep punk roots ... Kadrey’s underworld is a gloomy mirror of the overworld with all its injustice and broken dreams, and Zoe’s battle with her fear and her honorable spirit put her in enough jeopardy for six novels. (Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing)

“Kadrey again has painted a world that draws you in with its mysterious, yet frightening, beauty…The imagery is just phenomenal.” (Crimespree Magazine)

“An intelligent stand-alone tale of quiet horror that should appeal to Kadrey’s many fans, as well as to lovers of more subtle shivers.” (Library Journal)

“This bittersweet and elegaic fantasy will appeal to both fantasy fans and mainstream readers.” (Publishers Weekly)

Dead Set by Richard Kadrey
By Star
Zoe is a character I think we all can relate to in some way: she's mourning her father, angry about having to move, and she's lonely. Her one true friend is her dream-brother, Valentine, who she visits every night. However, something new has invaded their dream world and is starting to affect Zoe's waking world. When Zoe ditches school and wanders aimlessly, she comes upon an old record shop. Now, as her parents were both into music and art, she's drawn in and stumbles onto a very special section of the store. For the right price, Zoe can see her father again...

I absolutely adore the Sandman Slim novels, so when I saw Mr. Kadrey had written a YA novel I was super excited. Mix Gaiman and de Lint with the special Kadrey touch and you have `Dead Set'. With exquisite world-building, well-defined characters, and a beautifully seamless blend of ancient mythology and modern life, 'Dead Set' does not disappoint! As we walk beside Zoe in her travels, we are introduced to the hidden world of Iphigene where the restless dead are ruled by the iron fist and decayed heart of its queen. Zoe brings a ray of hope to a world resigned to its fate and her journey begins to heal not only herself, but the whole of Iphigene. `Dead Set' is a treasure I will enjoy reading many times over!

Excellent young adult supernatural novel by Kadrey
By Karissa Eckert
I got a copy of this book through Netgalley(dot)com to review. I have really enjoyed Kadrey’s Sandman Slim series, so I was excited to read a young adult book by him. This was an excellent and creepy read and I really enjoyed it.

Zoe and her mother have moved to the Big City after her father’s death. Things are tough, her mother can’t find work and Zoe is having trouble fitting in at school. Zoe’s only escape are her dreams, where she travels to a different place and visits with her lost brother Valentine. Then Zoe discovers a strange record shop. There the store keeper shows her a record of her father’s soul and allows her to watch it for the price of a lock of hair. Then for the price of a tooth she can actually visit her father in the realm of Iphigene. But as the price gets steeper and Zoe get more and more drawn into Iphigene, the question becomes will she ever escape this dark and deadly alternate world?

This is a very creepy book. The whole idea of a person’s soul being trapped on a record and of the creepy shop keeper asking for parts of Zoe for payment is eerie. The land of Iphigene is even more so. Iphigene is haunted by hungry trapped souls and ruled by Hecate, an evil witch of a character.

Zoe is an interesting character. She has a history of self-inflicted wounds (she was a cutter and struggles with this still) and misses her dad horribly. She is driven by the idea that finding her dad will somehow fix everything even though he is dead. She is also haunted by the dreams of Valentine, a brother she never actually knew. At times in the book Zoe is teetering on the edge of insanity and becomes extremely desperate and reckless.

Zoe’s mother and father are intriguing. They are both very sad characters, but you can tell they love each other and Zoe a lot. They are the epitome of a lot of adults out there. They made decisions in life that they thought were the best decisions to make at the time, but ultimately those decisions made them leave some dream behind and made them very unhappy.

Valentine is fascinating. He is the unborn brother of Zoe and really never got a chance to live in the real world. However, he’s been in Iphigene for a large portion of his life. He has served as a companion and confidant for Zoe throughout her life and now as she journeys to Iphigene he serves as a guide.

The story is fast-paced but not as gritty as the Sandman Slim series, it is definitely more of a young adult novel. That’s not to say there isn’t a lot of edginess here and some disturbing stuff. The way Hecate’s children feed on the lost souls is extremely disturbing. The way Zoe is hunted down by the evil shopkeeper and Hecate is also very creepy. So this is a very darkly creative and intriguing story, just not as violent as the Sandman Slim series.

There is an interesting mystery to be solved here. Zoe has to figure out what Iphigene is and escape it before Hecate can capture Zoe and take over her body. It is definitely a fast-paced and engaging read and I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed that there is a lot of mythology, especially Egyptian mythology, woven into the story.

Overall I liked this book a lot. It was interesting to read a young adult book by Kadrey, he did a good job of making a darkly creative story that was edgy and creepy but still young adult. I enjoyed the complex characters, the absolutely wonderfully dark and creative world of Iphigene, and the fast pace of the story. If you are a fan of Kadrey I definitely recommend you check this book out. If you are a fan of dark and creepy supernatural stories I think you would like this as well.

Dark and entertaining.
By Catfish
Dead Set is a slightly different tale from Richard Kadrey, different than his Sandman Slim stories.

The story is about Zoe, a teenager who has lost her father recently. She's living in an apartment in San Francisco with her mother and the situation is not great. They're both in a period of mourning and their home life is in flux. Zoe is attending a new school away from her friends and adrift. She happens to wander past an odd record shop which leads her on an adventure into a weird world. Yes, that's vague but I'd rather not give the book away.

Dead Set asks a few questions of Zoe and the reader. What would you do if you could have a chance to talk to someone you loved again? Would you take that risk? That's the question that Zoe has to ask herself and I found it really fascinating. What if you have the chance to have some closure? What would you do? Zoe gets the chance to ask that question on her journey in a very visceral world.

Overall, I was surprised how compelled I was to finish this book. I'd recommend highly. A good story from a good author.

Men in Black meets Ghostsbusters
By Alt
This volume collects issues 1 to 4 of R.I.P.D., originally published in 1999 and 2000. It's sort of like Men In Black mixed with Ghostbusters. Perhaps that's why it inspired a movie that, as of this writing, is in post-production.

Sheriff Roy Powell chases Hell Raisers, but he's been doing it for a century and he's about to retire. Nick Cruz is a dead cop who wants to know the identity of his killer. Heaven's lawyer makes him a deal he can't refuse, and he's soon employed (with a hundred year contract) by the Rest In Peace Department. Before he retires, Powell must train Cruz to kill creatures that aren't technically alive. Powell and Cruz complete their first mission together by journeying to a very warm place.

R.I.P.D. is a light and breezy break from all the graphic novels that purport to take demons seriously. The story is engaging and the dialog has enough snap and wit to set this apart from lesser efforts to merge demons with humor. The art is full of funny caricatures that avoid going over the top, setting the right tone for the amusing story.

Random Comic Review: R.I.P.D
By Joshua S. Taylor
There are a lot of novel ideas, and the comic is overall a good read. However the problem is that the book is way too short. It's hard to get invested in the characters and the world of the story, because it's over in a blink of the eye. I really wish there was more to this story, because I actually enjoyed the concept of the book. There are some creative and interesting story parts to this comic. The artwork is a little cartoony, but fits with the story well and I enjoyed it. The length of the book makes it feel rushed, and that makes things happen too quickly. Which I feel takes away from the enjoyment of the story. If you are looking for a quick and fun read, then this book is worth picking up because it's worth the read. I just would've liked more to the story.

Seen This Story Line Before
By Jeffrey D. Sherwood
This was a good story and the premise is original. There is a plot line that was ripped right out of Men In Black, where the old agent is training the rookie to be his replacement. Other than that it was a fun read and the artwork is really good.

How to Be Alone
By Sheri Newton
How to Be Alone is a poem written by Tanya Davis with illustrations by Andrea Dorfman that has adapted the poem into a beautiful book. The original “How to Be Alone” video on youtube has over 6 million well deserved views, and I am one of the many viewers of it who fell in love with the poem, and the positive message of being alone. See it for yourself before reading more about the book.

How to Be Alone is amazing. It is a beautifully designed poem that I saw on youtube that turned into a truly gorgeous book that anyone can enjoy anywhere – especially if they are alone.

The poem has a real place in my heart because it speaks the truth in so many ways. Being “alone” doesn’t mean that a person is necessarily lonely. Society and your family may not get you, and that is okay. Being you and being able to enjoy your life alone is an important part of truly finding yourself and happiness. Excellent message for people to get today. I couldn’t say enough positive things about it.

The illustrations for this book is also fabulous. It isn’t overly done to make it more dramatic. It is simple and sophisticated in a way that is truly magical.

This is a perfect book. I enjoyed it very much and would highly recommend everyone to watch the youtube video, read the book, and buy a few more to give as presents.

* Thank you to the publisher of How to Be Alone, Harper, for providing me with a copy of this book for review. All opinions expressed are my own.
