An interesting book on primarily English Best Quality shotguns.
While not heavy on How To, it explains the the level of expertise
and the amount of handwork involved in making Best Guns.
For Americans, it provides in-depth exposure to the English
terms for gun parts and components.
If you're interested in English shotguns, this is an entertaining read.

This is a great primer for the layman on the subject of CLASSIC double barrel shotguns and drillings. Don't expect this book to tell you about Benelli's or your lame-ass 870 Remington; you won't find it here. This book breaks down the fundamentals of the true craft of fine gun making and repair. It won't tell you everything, but as someone who has been machining and shooting fine guns for years, I found it informative and affirming. For the open mind, you'll learn a lot of the technological ideas that got us to where we are today with shotguns.

Mary Bennet gets her own happy ending

I can’t resist a well written book that takes a less prominent, somewhat maligned character from one of Austen’s novels and convincingly rescues her (it’s usually a her) from the shadows with a plausible alteration of manners and a fitting happy ending. On all these accounts, The Pursuit of Mary Bennet delights.

Since Lizzie and Jane have gotten married Mary Bennet is much improved, though it took soul searching and hard work, and when upset she sometimes slips back into old patterns. Her singing is still atrocious, but at least now she knows it, and Darcy has thoughtfully provided her with lessons on the pianoforte so her playing is both pleasing and heartfelt. Mary still loves to read, but with Lizzie gone she has been encouraged by her lonely father to switch from moralizing tomes to history, philosophy, and poetry. She hasn’t lost her tendency to forthright speech, but with more life experience her judgements have softened so she's no longer a sermonizing prig.

It’s of course impossible to match Austen’s wonderful prose, but author Pamela Mingle made the smart and--I think--unusual choice of writing this Pride and Prejudice sequel in the first person, which both removes some of the comparison and takes the reader straight past Mary’s sometimes stiff exterior and into her heart. She also keeps Lizzy off stage more than the other Bennets, another wise decision because it’s very hard to capture Lizzie’s lively, intelligent wit, and when authors try the results are usually disappointing, at least to me. Mary Bennet she captures definitively. Mary’s character growth makes sense, and it’s that hard won betterment that is challenged when plot circumstances (rash actions by Lydia and the uncertain attentions of a potential suitor) throw her life and sentiments into disorder. Reading The Pursuit of Mary Bennet was a treat.

Disappointing sequel

I love Pride and Prejudice and spend my time being bitterly disappointed by lacklustre sequels and variations. I decided to give this one a try as it was something a bit different, and I thought I might be a bit more forgiving of a different spin on a less central P & P character.

The story follows Mary Bennet and her struggles to escape her former self and her families preconceived notions of her. She attracts the interest of an imminently suitable gentleman. Mr Henry Walsh but has to overcome some obstacles in the form of some sisterly competition, Lydia scandalously returning home sans Wickham, and her own self doubt.

The book started quite well, as Mary seemed to be an engaging protagonist and I liked that the author went somewhere different with this sequel but unfortunately the negatives outweighed the positives. Mary's love interest was a bit bland. I didn't get a real sense of his character and the romance was a bit lacking. It didn't help that Mary's feelings were all over the place. She loved him, she wasn't sure, she was throwing Kitty at him and it didn't seem to go anywhere until a hasty resolution at the end.

The worst aspect of the book however was the sub plot involving Lydia and her baby. It was entirely unnecessary, anachronistic and just distracted from the main plot. It also got rather crazy as Mary started channelling Rebecca de Mornay from the Hand that rocks the Cradle. Very creepy.

I applaud the author for trying something different but it just didn't work. I think if the sub plot had been dropped this book would have had potential.

A most amazing sequel to Pride and Prejudice. Jane Austen would be proud!!!

If you are a Jane Austen fan of Pride and Prejudice, you will love this novel. If you haven't seen Pride and Prejudice, watch it and then deeply immerse yourself in the richness this novel offers when it picks up where the original leaves off. It had been quite awhile since I had read or even watched the movie and in order to reacquaint myself in the characters of the Bennet girls I spent some time watching the movie. Since this novel takes a look at life from Mary Bennet's point of view I had to remember who she was. Since she isn't addressed much I wondered why Pamela Mingle chose this particular Bennet girl to write a sequel on, but trust me when I tell you, she needs to be applauded for her efforts. Jane Austen would be proud!

Mary Bennet was the middle of five Bennet girls and one that most of her sisters and often times parents ignored. She wasn't pretty or even possessed any real talent a man looking for a suitable wife would find worth turning his head for. In fact, in Pride and Prejudice, Mary is chastened by her father for her lack of musical talent at playing the pianoforte or even singing. Now after spending time working at music, she possess a fine talent in those areas, but lacking the self esteem or even being bold enough as her sisters, she prefers to read alone or take walks, much like the wall flower she sees herself as.

Even her parents know that Mary will undoubtedly be an old spinster lacking in finding a suitable husband and her best outcome in life will be the governess for her older married sisters Jane or Elizabeth. But deep down inside Mary wants more but isn't sure how to find it. She is constantly reprimanded whenever she offers an opinion in any situation because she lacks the experience in such areas that her opinion isn't considered from love to marriage or even raising children. When her younger sister Lydia returns home while expecting a child from her husband Mr. Wickham, it throws the Bennet household into more scandal. In fact it turns out that Lydia isn't sure the child she is carrying is even her husbands and she has left him.

Mary is taken to her sister Jane's while the family decides how to best handle Lydia's latest predicament and to avoid having the rest of the daughter's tainted in the process. As only one of two sisters now left unmarried, Mary finds herself drawn to Mr. Henry Walsh. He seems genuinely interested in her as well but when Kitty, Mary's youngest sister deems that Henry is off limits, will Mary once again fade into the shadow or will she fight for what she wants in life?

I received The Pursuit of Mary Bennet by Pamela Mingle compliments of William Morrow, division of Harper Collins Publishers for my honest review and did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review. However, this one was so worth taking the time to spend with Mary Bennet. I think out of all the Bennet daughters, I myself, relate to her more than the rest of the girls. Pamela Mingle did such a flawless job, I felt Jane Austen herself had written this one. I can easily give this one a well deserved 5 out of 5 stars and was so thrilled to be able to review this one. This is such a treat and to spend time savoring each page was well worth curling up with on a rainy cold evening. A MUST HAVE for any fan of Pride and Prejudice!

I swallowed hard, my elongated canines scraping my lower lip, drawing blood. Blood. I needed to feed. Denied my elixir, the thirst was driving me mad. I could smell it, somewhere up above, pulsing through veins and warming the skin of the living. The metallic tang made my mouth water, made me tremble with need. I closed my eyes, fighting the bloodlust, denying it.

When I opened my eyes again, she was there, standing before me.

Violet.

The orange flames flickered across her face, throwing shadows across her cheekbones. Her mouth curved into a smile as she reached a hand out to me, beckoning me.

My heart thudded against my ribs as my hungry gaze swept over her, devouring her. I tried to call out her name, to beg her forgiveness.

I’m sorry, Vi. So very sorry.

She shook her head, her brows drawn over the emerald eyes that had haunted my days and nights in this miserable, agony-filled existence that was my life since I left her.

“Come back to me,” she begged, her voice a ragged whisper. “Please, Aidan. I need you.”

I tried to reach for her, raging against the restraints that dug into my wrists, manacling me. A sob tore from my parched throat as I struggled ineffectually, the metal bruising and biting my skin, breaking my bones.

And then she began to fade away, her form dissolving like wisps of smoke that looped and curled toward the ceiling before fading into nothingness.

No.

Pure, undiluted rage filled me. Roaring like an animal, I redoubled my efforts, fighting against my restraints. It didn’t take long before I began to weaken, no match for the chains that bound me.

At last spent, I sank to my knees. The flames lapped at my thighs now, reaching toward my hips. My bare chest was slick with sweat, with blood mixed with tears. I didn’t even flinch when the spikes pierced my shoulders, tearing through muscle and bone.

My chin dropped toward my chest, my head bowed in defeat. I’d lost her. Lost us. Any humanity left inside this monstrous body was gone, ripped away like a useless limb.

I did not deserve her. I did not deserve to live. And yet I would live, trapped in this nightmare of pain and despair for an eternity.

Violet was nothing but a dream—the most beautiful dream imaginable—and I was just a broken, burning monster.

“It’s been ten days, Cece!” I paced back and forth, wearing a path in the rug at the foot of my bed. The hand that held my cell against my ear shook, the plastic case digging into my palm as I tried to tamp down the panic that crept into my voice. “C’mon. You’ve got to help me out here.”

Cece sighed. “I swear I’m trying. I’ve tried to project every single morning. I don’t know what else I can do, Violet. There’s got to be some sort of shield around Mrs. Girard or something—around all of them.” I could hear the frustration in her voice. “You tried calling Winterhaven, right? Someone there has to have a cell number for her.”

I shook my head. “No one at Winterhaven will tell me anything. I think she must be in Paris—Aidan says that’s where the Tribunal meets. They must have taken him there.” To punish him. Torture him. I inhaled sharply, trying to banish the horrible images from my mind.

“Well, they must have some sort of system to keep everything under wraps. I’m sorry, Violet. I’ll try again later, but don’t get your hopes up.”

I let out my breath in a rush. “It’s not your fault. It’s just . . . I don’t know what else to do.”

“Well, what about Dr. Byrne?”

I shook my head. “What about him?”

“She’s his boss. Doesn’t he have any idea how to get in touch with her?”

“No, and it gets worse. He says she’s left word that she’s taken a temporary leave of absence. Dr. Ackerman is acting headmistress until she gets back.”

“What? That’s crazy. What the heck is going on?”

“I have no idea. I’m losing my mind here, Cee. This past week has been a total disaster.”

That was putting it mildly. Understandably, it had taken a good three days to calm Whitney down. To say that she was completely freaked out would be the understatement of the century. I mean, c’mon—a vampire had attacked her, a vampire who happened to be her best friend’s boyfriend. It doesn’t get much more terrifying than that. Luckily, she’d managed to pull herself together enough to go to her audition at Juilliard.

Still, it had been a tense few days. After Aidan had left, intent on turning himself over to the Tribunal, I’d had all these grand plans to clear him by figuring out who’d tampered with his work. But I hadn’t been able to focus on Aidan’s situation, not until I’d put Whitney in a cab bound for Newark Airport.

But things weren’t any better after she’d left. I hadn’t been able to get in touch with Mrs. Girard—couldn’t locate her, not even with Cece’s help. And Trevors, the only one besides Mrs. Girard who might know where Aidan was, wasn’t returning my calls. I’d gone to Aidan’s town house several times and banged on the door till my knuckles bled. No response. If Trevors was there, he wasn’t answering.

I was at a complete and total loss, no closer to solving the mystery of what had turned Aidan into the murderous “Vampire Stalker” than I’d been a week ago.

“You still there?” Cece asked. I could hear laughter in the background. Someone was singing—very loudly and off-key.

I let out a sigh. “Yeah, I’m here. Sorry. I got lost in my thoughts. But hey, it sounds like there’s some family fun going on over there.”

“Those are my cousins. I told you they were crazy. I swear, the minute I get on the phone, they start acting up. Hey, watch it!” she called out. “You guys are going to knock over the tree!”

I couldn’t help but smile, imagining Cece there in New Orleans, surrounded by her extended family, everything all festive and cheery. Glancing around Patsy’s apartment, I took in my lame excuse for a Christmas tree sitting in the middle of the dining room table—a little potted fir, about two feet high and topped with a red velvet bow. That was it, the only sign that a major holiday had come and gone. Which was fine by me, as I certainly hadn’t felt like celebrating. Not this year. Not alone.

My phone beeped, and I glanced down at the screen. Matthew.

“Hey, my Megvéd’s beeping in,” I told Cece. “I better go see what he wants.” He was taking his job as my “protector” very seriously. Not a day had passed that he hadn’t either come by or called to check in. Which might be nice if it weren’t so freaking weird.

“Ooh, Matthew,” Cece said in the singsong voice she reserved for Dr. Byrne. “Yeah, you better go. Give him my love.”

I rolled my eyes. “Shut up.”

“Sorry. I couldn’t help myself.” Cece was laughing now. “Call me tomorrow, though, ’kay? I’ll try to project to Mrs. G. again in the morning.”

“Okay, thanks.” I hit end, then connected the call with Matthew. “Hey, what’s up?”

“Is Patsy back yet?” he asked without preamble. This had become typical Matthew over the past week. No “Hello, how are you” or anything mundane like that—he just cut right to the chase.

“No. I think she’s flying in tomorrow night.” Just as I’d seen in my vision, she’d gotten stung by a bee on a golf course the day before her scheduled flight home from Turks and Caicos. Thanks to my prodding, she’d been prepared with EpiPens. Still, her reaction had been bad—really bad. They’d kept her in the hospital for two nights, and she hadn’t been feeling well enough to fly. I didn’t care—didn’t even mind that she’d left me to spend Christmas alone. She was alive, and that was all that mattered. My vision had saved her.

“I’m coming over. I mean, if that’s okay,” Matthew added, his voice softening.

I shrugged, tapping my fingers against my thigh. “Sure.”

“Have you had dinner?”

“No.” I wasn’t hungry. I hadn’t been hungry in days.

“Okay. I’ll pick something up on my way over.” I could hear him jangling his keys. “How ’bout Thai?”

“Sounds good.”

“Thai it is, then. See you in a few.”

I tossed down my phone and flopped onto my bed with a sigh. God, this was crazy. Aidan was off somewhere being tortured, and all I could do was sit around eating Thai food with one of my teachers. Okay, technically he wasn’t my teacher—I didn’t take any science classes—but he was Sophie’s, and that was weird enough.

Closing my eyes, I took a deep, calming breath—in through my nose, out through my mouth—but it didn’t help. This was wrong. I hated this feeling of complete and utter helplessness. More than anything, I wanted to take the credit card Patsy had given me for emergencies, hop a cab to JFK, and catch the first flight to Paris. I needed to find Aidan. I missed him so badly, I could barely stand it. I physically felt his absence, like a big, fat hole in my heart that grew larger with each passing second.

Reaching a hand to my temple, I focused everything I had on him, conjuring an image in my mind’s eye.

Come back to me, I called out telepathically. Please, Aidan. I need you.

I knew he couldn’t hear me, not with thousands of miles and an ocean between us. Still, I swear I felt the faintest flicker of a buzz in my head. A rush of hope made my heart race, my breath come faster. Rising, I hurried to the window that looked out on Park Avenue and laid one palm flat against the cool glass.

Aidan? I tried again. Can you hear me?

Nothing. I shook my head, confused. I could have sworn I felt . . . something. I took another deep breath, renewing my focus. My eyes still closed, I rolled my shoulders, trying to relax.

And then the traffic noise receded—just like that. The glass seemed to warm beneath my palm. Inexplicably, there was heat warming my ankles, lapping at my calves. The heat intensified, making my legs feel as if . . . as if they were on fire. And then a sharp, tearing pain stabbed at my side, making my breath catch as I doubled over in agony.

My eyes flew open, my focus gone. I blinked several times as I straightened, trying to get my bearings. Below, a siren blared. I watched as an ambulance came barreling down the street, its lights flashing as cars scattered around it. Chilled, I pulled my hand away from the window, cradling it against my body.

Had I imagined those sensations—the heat, the sharp pain? I must have, I reasoned. Unless . . . unless there was a vampire close by and I’d somehow breached its mind. I shook my head. Not likely. It didn’t work like that—at least, not unless the vampire was in the apartment next door. Nope. I’d imagined it. I was losing my mind. It was the only reasonable explanation.

Of course, since when were “reasonable explanations” a part of my life?

I glanced over at the clock by my bed, wondering how much time I had till Matthew showed up. Probably not much, I decided, thinking I should set out some plates and silverware. On my way out, I paused by my dresser, my gaze drawn to the clear plastic container tucked up against the framed picture of Aidan and me at the Halloween Fair dance, both of us decked out in attire circa 1905.

I popped open the case and reached inside for the silver circlet pin that had once held the fragrant orange blossoms Aidan had given me on that night. I inhaled deeply, almost sure I could smell a hint of the sweet citrus scent left behind. The overhead light glinted off the crystals as I ran a finger over them, the faceted stones forming a perfect, unbroken circle.

I flipped it over, examining the back side. It was perfect, as unblemished as the day I received it, the smooth, shiny surface reflecting the light. Silver would have tarnished by now, I realized with a start. Which meant it was probably white gold—maybe even platinum. Curious now, I tipped it this way and that, taking a closer look.

And then I noticed something that I hadn’t before—words, etched into the metal beneath the clasp. My fingers shaking, I clumsily unhooked it, swinging away the metal pin. My heart began to race as I read the engraving: Eternal love.

Tears flooded my eyes, blurring my vision. One spilled over, tracing a path down my cheek. As I wiped it away, I tried to remember what he’d said to me on that crisp, cool October night as he’d pinned the circlet to my dress—something about how flowers had meaning back in his day, that orange blossoms meant eternal love. He’d never given them to anyone before he’d given them to me.

And now? He never would again. I had to choke back the sob that threatened to topple my sanity.

Who is This Book For????

Confessions of a So-Called Middle Child by Maria T. Lemon brought up a bunch of questions for me. First being is the designated age grouping correct? It is labeled as a book for 8-12 year olds or grades 3-7. I think that it the subject matter covered is too mature for the average 8-10 year old. I don't feel that hacking into other people/organizations' computers is really what I would want a child to learn about. Nor, do I feel that Charlie C. Cooper's actions when she loses her best friend at school are anything I would want my grandchildren (9 and 12) exposed to.

Charlie (the main character of the book) is a 12 year old girl who, as a social worker I would say, is a troubled child. She is angry, reacts to events without really thinking of consequences, associates with other computer hackers and is more concerned about what she is wearing rather than how she is interacting with her family and others. She has been kicked out of her last school. Her family has moved to another town to give her a fresh start and yes, she is a middle child.....but that is not what this book addresses. Rather it is a journey of this girl from a troubled child to a caring person who perhaps learns what is should be important in life.

I read the whole book and wasn't bored. I was focusing on this girl journey. I am not sure that the targeted age group are really going to see that part of the story, but rather will be interested in what she designs to wear, how rude she is to adults and all the members of her family, and her actions and reactions. I really did not like this character on the whole. But occasionally I glimpsed a little girl who loved her father, who desperately wanted to have friends and who seems to be a bright, curious child.

This isn't an adult book and it really isn't a book for children under 12.....and it isn't written in a style that would draw the teen reader although that is probably the group who would understand the real meaning of the storyline.

Perfect for ages 10-12 and up

I got this for my 7th grade daughter in hopes of luring her away from the vampy vampires or sugary looovvvveee stories. This book has been compared to Harriet the Spy and I'd say that's pretty fair. I'm using it as a learning tool for our 12 year old who thinks she's so cute when she backchats a teacher or insults her friends. I think it gives a more harsh point of view but some kids don't respond to coddling. I enjoyed the book myself. The writing style is for YA but it has just enough real life situations that lead into serious discussions. The tone is light and funny in some parts, it's just really well put together story that doesn't paint all kids as pweshush snowflakes. Recommended for 10 year to young /mid teens

This is masterful writing

I'm a "shrink" (as Maria refers to us). I literally laughed out loud (seriously, I scared my dog Vinny) at how she described the shrink she visited in elementary school. Priceless!

I've written a bunch of parenting and psych. books, and I have to confess; If I could write like Maria Lennon, I'd rule the world. Or at a minimum I'd have sold WAY MORE books! I'm seriously professionally, could use some couch-time myself jealous. Maria... I don't know where you learned to write this way (genetics, warped childhood, self-medication or all of the above), but I'm way impressed. You are a funny, funny and gifted writer.

Fellow readers... if you are looking for a hysterical read with page turning power and an uplifting message -- this is the book for you. Buy it now! You will be happy you did.

"This cannot seriously be happening," Imani mumbled as she tried to keep what was left of her patience. The speedometer in her gold Lexus hadn't gone over five miles per hour since she got stuck in this bumper-to-bumper traffic. Morning traffic in downtown Chicago was something she had never gotten used to. Her meeting with Mr. and Mrs. Sims was scheduled to begin any minute. She had thought she would make it in time if she left her condo two hours prior, but clearly she'd thought wrong.

The Simses owned several luxurious estates in Illinois and were founders of one of the best job-resource agencies in the country. Imani was meeting with them to discuss buying one of their top estates—the one that had the gorgeous view of Lake Michigan. She had promised her grandmother she would act fast when the Simses were ready to sell.

Imani's family and the Simses were close friends, and although many people were trying to get their hands on the estate, the couple had narrowed down the list of prospects to Imani and one other buyer. Unfortunately, the other buyer was willing to beat her price.

"Come on, move out of the way!"

Yelling alone didn't seem to get her point across, so she honked her horn for good measure. She didn't care what the other drivers thought of her. Her morning had begun badly when she'd realized her flat iron was broken, resulting in her having to straighten half her hair with a curling iron. The day became progressively worse after she spilled coffee on her favorite black business suit, and had to settle for a suit that fit her backside a tad tighter than she'd liked. The awful traffic wasn't helping matters. But just as she'd almost given up hope of ever making it off Lake Shore Drive, traffic finally started moving, and she reached her destination.

She entered the corporate building ten minutes late. "Hello. My name is Imani Rayne, and I have a 10:00 meeting with Mr. and Mrs. Sims."

The French receptionist waved her manicured hands toward two grand doors. "Mr. and Mrs. Sims are waiting for you. Please go right in."

Imani stepped into the conference room. "Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Sims. I'm so sorry I'm late." Imani gave a soft smile.

"No problem, sweetie." Mrs. Sims took Imani's hands in hers, stepped back and appraised her from head to toe. "Just look at you. It seems like just yesterday, you were a little baby girl holding your grandmother's pinkie finger. My, how you've grown."

As a teen, Imani felt like she'd never mature out of her awkward phase. She no longer had the look of an adolescent girl unaware of how to accentuate her curves and master her feminine walk. Now, she embraced her beauty and had confidence in her stride.

"We haven't seen you in so long, Imani. You seem to be doing fine, just a little sad in the eyes," Mr. Sims said.

"I'm fine. It gets a little easier every year. I still miss Gamine, but everything is going well."

It had been five years since her grandmother, Faith "Gamine" Burrstone, passed away. At times, she still felt the same gut-wrenching ache she felt that fateful day she'd gotten the news of her passing.

Mrs. Sims softly squeezed Imani's hand. "It takes time, and she wouldn't want you to be sad."

She gently stroked Mrs. Sims's hand. "I know."

"Let's get down to business," Mr. Sims suggested. He stepped aside to escort Imani to a nearby chair. Until that moment, Imani hadn't noticed the handsome gentleman with smooth chocolate skin sitting at the end of the conference table.

"Imani Rayne, I'd like to introduce you to Daman Barker, the other buyer vying for the estate."

Daman stood and walked toward her. "Ms. Rayne, it's a pleasure."

"Nice to meet you, Mr. Barker, but please call me Imani." She was surprised at how low and sexy her voice had gotten.

"It's nice to meet you, too, and you can call me Daman."

She grasped his hand a little longer than she should have, surprised by the electric spark. The way his masculine hands encased hers shot shivers through every part of her body.

Daman Barker is your competition. Pull yourself together, girl. You got this!

Easier said than done. Daman was tall and muscular. And God bless the tailor who draped his body in that stylish, blue, pin-striped suit. The man had swagger. She'd noticed that much in his short stride from his seat to her side of the conference table. But that wasn't all she'd noticed. He was arrogant; she could tell by the way he carried himself. But goodness, he made arrogance look sexy.

She scanned her memory, trying to recall why his name seemed so familiar, but she came up short. He was observing her so closely that it was hard for her to keep her breathing under control. It felt like he could see right through her business suit. Is he attracted to me, or is he just assessing his competition? As if he knew her thought process, he winked and gave her a sexy smile, catching her off guard.

Yes, it was definitely attraction.

"Shall we get started?" Mr. Sims asked, interrupting the silent exchange between Imani and Daman.

"Yes," she and Daman both replied.

Mr. Sims tapped a small, disorderly bundle of paper on the desk until it lined up into a neat stack. "Okay, we have called you both here today because of your interest in our estate. We're having a difficult time making a decision. Therefore, we have a proposal for you both."

Imani sat and calmly glanced from Mr. Sims to Mrs. Sims. "And what would that be?"

"Well, you both are aware of the leading Black Enterprise Entrepreneurs Conference and Expo that takes place every year, allowing African-American entrepreneurs and business owners a chance to network and receive recognition for their work. I believe you both have members in your families that have been honored at previous conferences. This year, Black Enterprise is throwing the First Annual Performance and Achievement Awards Gala that will honor business owners and entrepreneurs on a much larger scale. Are you both aware of the gala?"

"Yes," Imani replied. Daman nodded his head in agreement.

Mr. Sims pushed back from the table just a bit, placing one long leg across the other and laying his hand over his ankle. "My wife and I are on the Black Enterprise executive board, and we were asked to choose event planners to organize the gala. We expect this event to be the premier destination event for business owners. It takes place on July 20th, three months from now, and requires the confirmation of approximately fifteen hundred guests, catering plans, pre- and post-party plans…the list goes on and on."

Imani looked at Daman. Since he appeared as confused as she felt, she asked the obvious question. "I'm sorry, Mr. Sims, but I don't follow. What does the gala have to do with our interest in the estate?"

Mrs. Sims smiled. "What my husband is trying to say to you both is that we've received approval from the board and would like to ask you both to plan the gala…together. Afterward, you two will decide who will get the estate. If you accept the challenge, we have numerous volunteers to help you."

Having numerous volunteers wasn't important to Imani. What was important was finding out why the Simses thought it was such a good idea for her and Daman to work together on this.

Mrs. Sims poured herself a glass of water from the carafe sitting near her side of the table. She took a quick sip before continuing. "I guess you should also know that last week we decided to sell one of our smaller estates. Although it isn't as exquisite as the estate with the lake view, it's definitely a beautiful property. Whoever does not get the lake-view estate will get the smaller estate."

Mr. Sims nodded his agreement. "We understand how you both must feel, and if you accept, the board will be happy to have you on the planning committee free of charge."

"Free of charge? Why wouldn't we get paid for this event?" Daman asked.

Mr. Sims smiled slightly before continuing. "As a consolation prize for your doing us this huge favor, we are willing to give those properties to you for a minimal fee." He handed Imani and Daman each a piece of paper detailing the prices for the estates.

"Why would you charge us so little?" Daman asked.

"Mr. Sims and I have made some very wise investments, so we have all the money we could ask for." Mrs. Sims softly touched her husband's arm. "This is something that we want to do, and we'd appreciate it if you took us up on our offer. Selling the estates was never about the money. It was more about ensuring that the estates were in very good hands."

Imani hated surprises, and she really wished the Simses would have taken her aside to explain their proposal before having the meeting. But as a friend of the Simses, she knew better than to debate them on the issue. "I need a day or two to think about this," she said.

"I do, too." Daman stood and moved toward Imani's chair. "Imani, I usually work in Detroit this time of year, but I will be in Chicago for a while. May I suggest that you and I talk about this over dinner tomorrow?"

Daman was right; they had a lot to discuss. But at the moment, she couldn't even think about the Simses' proposal because the man towering over her was making her heart skip a beat.

"Sounds like a plan," she said, satisfied that her voice wasn't as seductive as before. "Here's my card. Call me, and I'll meet you at the restaurant of your choice."

Daman nodded as he took the card in one hand and reached out his other hand, waiting for her to return the gesture. She hesitated outwardly, but inwardly she was certainly responding to him. Imani is a single, hard-working, family-oriented woman with high standards. She is determined to please her grandmother by advancing in her career, which requires most of her time. Life continues and Imani is faced with an unexpected loss. During her grieving process, she meets Daman for business and one thing leads to the next. Imani realizes she must make decisions in an area she feels less experienced - relationships/love.

"A Tempting Proposal" by Sherelle Green is perfect for readers seeking love in today's society. I love the way the author creates scenes where you can sense the character's emotions - attraction, love, romance. A tempting proposal indeed!

I really enjoyed Imani and Daman's story! Many romance authors focus so much on developing sizzling chemistry, that they lose sight of creating a genuine love story. Ms. Green told a compelling love story with great dialogue, depth, relatable main characters, and a cast of colorful secondary characters as well. I can't wait to read more from this author!

I started reading this book and couldn't put down. The storyline had a easy flow and I enjoyed the connection between Imani and Daman. In some ways I saw myself in Iman's character, as far as family goes. The introduction of the characters made room for connecting stories which I hope will come. I recommend you pick up a copy of this page turning, it will not disappoint.

About the Author
Michael Morpurgo OBE is one of Britain's best-loved writers for children. He has written over 100 books and won many prizes, including the Smarties Prize, the Blue Peter Book Award and the Whitbread Award. Good read for relaxation

Lots of interesting short stories, mainly for children, but an adult can enjoy them full. The stories are full of human touches. Highly recommended if you want very short stories where each story could be finished in about half an hour.

Gr 9 Up-Readers will not be able to keep up with the events in this finale if they haven't read Wildefire (2011) and Embers & Echoes (2012, both S & S). Ashline, 16, is attempting to finally put an end to the plans of Colt, a trickster god who ultimately wants to destroy the world. He also wants to bring back Pele, who was split into three separate souls as punishment for her ill deeds, and Ashline and her sisters are his target. If he kills them in just the right way, he can save his lady love. Ashline and several other gods of various pantheons are fighting to stay alive and to stop Colt from restoring all of the evil gods who have been banished to the netherworld. The basic idea of the book seems awesome, especially bringing in Polynesian gods and other non-Western pantheons. Unfortunately, the execution is a bit shaky and the characters are not fully realized. Keeping track of all the plot twists, and ignoring the gaping holes, makes it difficult to suspend disbelief and fully dive into the tale. The ending makes everything even more difficult to swallow, as the story is written from Ashline's point of view but the final chapter is set in the future with her ancestor using her "published novels" (this trilogy) in order to best Colt for the last time. Afterglow is the final book in the Wildefire trilogy about teenage reincarnated Polynesian volcano goddesses Ashline Wilde. In this last installment, Ash is hunting down Colt, her ex-boyfriend as he jumps from state-to-state looking for objects that will help him kill the all-knowing cloak race and to bring the pieces of Pele’s soul back together. With the help of new and old gods, Ashline sets out to make sure Colt doesn’t accomplish his goal, because Pele is one of the most unpredictable and dangerous goddesses around.

Afterglow takes place less than 24 hours after the events of Embers & Echoes and has the same book layout as the first two in the series; the chapters are divided into three parts and again we get flashbacks scenes of Pele and Colt but this time it’s in Maui, 1831. The story start rolling within the first 20 pages, when Ashline learns that Colt needs help from Hephaestus, Greek god of forge and metallurgy who happens to be clueless that he’s a reincarnated god. The story is nonstop action and snarky one-liners from Ashline and Eve from start to finish. I love Ashline, she’s one of the toughest heroines in the YA genre, but the one thing that bothered be this time around is the snarkiness; it was just too much. It was like every other sentence. In the beginning I thought it hilarious, second book it was still funny but now it just feels like overkill…but overall it didn’t deter me from enjoying the book.

Readers reunite with familiar gods/goddesses from the first two books and many more new ones in the flashback scenes and present. My favorite part of the book was probably the way Knight ended his trilogy. There were a LOT of casualties, more so this time around than Ember & Echoes but the good thing is that they’ll be reincarnated in the next life. The ending for Ashline was bittersweet because while she saved some important people in her life she couldn’t save everyone. As for the main-main ending (epilogue); Knight did something that no author has ever done. It was brilliant! The ending fit the series perfectly, and is probably one of the best ending I’ve ever read for a series.

Afterglow was a gratifying end to a great series. It’s been an amazing ride with Ashline and the gang, and I definitely won’t look at gods and goddesses the same way ever again. If you’re looking for a series with a refreshing concept and relatable/likable characters then this series is for you. Make sure to start at the beginning to get the full effect of this series starting with Wildefire.
