Review
"When most people hear 'large-print book,' they immediately think senior citizen. But large-print editions of popular children's books -- from the powerhouse Harry Potter series to timeless classics like The Adventures of Tom Sawyer -- are now making their way onto the shelves of the Children's Department at the Canton Library. . . . Although large-print editions are targeted to the visually-impaired or dyslexic child, they can also be used by standard-vision readers. So Kershner [Children's librarian at the Canton Public Library] has decided against creating a special section in the Children's Department (as exists in the Adult Department) opting instead to intersperse large-print books on the shelves with the regular print versions of the same titles."
-- The Observer and Eccentric (October 2000) (The Observer and Eccentric 20001001)

"Thorndike Press has helped me not only find books I want to read, but they also look like regular books. That's important when you're a kid and you can only read Large Print, you want your book to look like all the other books. I'm reading a lot more now that we have found Thorndike Press."
-- Jim Bernardin, Islamorada, FL

"Everyone loves to read, there's nothing like curling up with a good book. We're a reading family, so when our son was diagnosed with Stargardt's Disease and only able to read Large Print, it was particularly difficult. Books on tape are wonderful but they don't fill the void of actually reading a good story. Large Print books have been around a long time for older people, but to find a good novel for a young person in Large Print began to feel nearly impossible. The books that Thorndike Press publishes have truly made a difference in my son's reading life. He can enjoy current novels as well as some of the classics that he missed reading when it became too difficult with regular print."

Not Bad, But Could Be Better
By A Customer
The Mystery of the Mother Wolf is a fairly good book, I would have rated it three and a half stars, but it was more closer to four. It isn't exactly a "must-read", but it is rather fun to trail along with the huge number of suspects. Nancy's father is missing, so she has to take drastic action at once! And it's during the ski season, so that way it is exciting, even more than the book "The Case of the Twin Teddy Bears", for those of you of have read that. I am writing this because I gave this book a chance, and that's all that matters to true 'Literature Lovers' like me! Be sure to try this book out, and do it, just to give it a chance if you really truly like books!

Ball, by Mary Sullivan

A dog with a ball is one of the most relentlessly hopeful creatures on Earth. After his best little-girl pal leaves for school, this dog hits up yoga mom, baby, and even the angry cat for a quick throw. No luck. Forced to go solo, the dog begins a hilarious one-sided game of fetch until naptime’s wild, ball-centric dream sequence. The pictures speak a thousand words in this comic book-style ode to canine monomania. Ball? Ball.

A Look Behind Ball with Mary Sullivan

Click the images below to see full-size images.

I had so many drawings that I wanted to put in the book. Honestly, there's just never enough room. This image did not make it into the book. But it did make it onto the case wrap. Which is almost my favorite part of the book!   There can be a bit of pressure doing a picture. I felt like I needed a place to escape to without leaving my desk. The edge of the frames was the perfect place to ease a bit of the tension and to have some spontaneous fun. I dedicated the book to Scout. Best dog ever in the whole wide world. And folks may be surprised to find out that he never fetched a ball once. Not ever in his whole long life. He would have nothing to do with a ball.

From School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-A humorous portrait of a dog with a one-track mind. Ball is a day-in-the-life portrait of a rumpled canine who lives and breathes to play fetch with his favorite human companion. When the girl goes to school, the dog is bereft; his beloved ball is lifeless. He tries to find other companions to fill the ball-throwing gap, but the adult is meditating, the baby isn't even mobile, and the cat is, well, a cat. The dog tries hiding the ball and then "finding" it, and eventually falls asleep and experiences an amusing ball-themed dream sequence that turns into a nightmare. At long last the pup's anguish is relieved as the girl comes home from school and they resume their happy rapport. The only text is the word "ball" repeated on every page; however, Sullivan adroitly infuses the canine with a wide variety of emotions, and a great deal can be read into that single word. The book uses a comic-strip layout for most of the pages, with a few spreads during the dream sequence. The digitally colored pencil drawings are full of action and energy and employ a muted palette dominated by yellows and oranges that give the book a warm 1970s feel. The proliferation of extra textures and flourishes that break the panels creates a lived-in, disheveled look to the drawings, which suits the bug-eyed, warts-and-all style used for the figures. A fine choice for independent readers and dog lovers everywhere.-Anna Haase Krueger, Ramsey County Library, White Bear Lake, MNα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist
Bound like a picture book but a comic book in spirit, this title features a funny animal parading through clean, clear panels of sequential art, taking clever advantage of the form’s codes and symbols to tell the story of a love affair between a dog and a ball, an object which becomes the story’s single, repeated word of text. As the dog watches his master leave and wanders the house looking for someone to play ball with, his desperation and excitement are positively palpable. Working with classical cartooning devices, like large, round heads, big expressive eyes, and extreme emotional reactions, Sullivan has managed to create her own distinctive style, giving each character its own particular sense of humanity (even characters that aren’t human) and wrapping everything in a gentle yellow wash of nostalgia. Everything from the dog’s brief encounter with a cat to his extended, ball-centric dream, told in full-page drawings, will make viewers giggle along with the story. Even those who have never had or wanted a dog will find themselves pining for a canine companion with similarly irresistible exuberance. Preschool-Grade 3. --Jesse Karp

An adorable book for dog lovers of all ages.
By Shoshona19
Some books spend thousands of words dancing around the point and boring young readers. "Ball" sticks to one word, the only word that matters to the adorably obsessed protagonist, and tells a delightful story. I purchased this book for my nieces, who will undoubtedly enjoy having a book they can read themselves, but I also recommend it for anyone who loves dogs and will immediately recognize the single-minded zeal of a doggy with a ball. Fantastic illustration, quick pacing and an overall simple presentation make this book a real find.

So clever and appeals to varying ages.
By reviewlation
This book is so stinkin' cute! What a clever concept. I have three kids - 5, 3, and 1 - and all three of them enjoy this at their own levels. My eldest son thinks it's hilarious to use so many different inflexions with the same word and my three-year-old son is giggling the entire time, especially through the dog's dream sequence. My 1-year old daughter loves the pictures, as they are bright and colorful and ironically, she can say 'ball' pretty well now, for such a young child. This would be a great addition to any children's home library.

Someone Really Understands My Dog!
By Duke
So, it's not Dickens or other classics of literature, but if you've ever had a Demando-Dog who ALWAYS wants to play 24-7, this is the book for you. A great gift for other dog owners; all to whom we've given it have loved it.

Great AX101 book!!!
By Alper Akan
Implementing Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 with Sure Step 2012 is a great book to start learning about how Dynamics AX is implemented. It is definitely not a replacement for the official sure step manuals but it summarizes all the high risk(even if they seemed to be not so important to some people) elements very nicely which might possibly fail a project. There are bunch of other books out there regarding how to implement/manage IT solutions but since this book is specific to AX, you will learn all the moving components/variables about AX. It is obvious that the author has lots of hands-on experiences in implementing AX and goes beyond listing things as checklist item and gives real life scenarios that comes from experience. In my opinion, it is the most important value that you are going to get from this book. "Real life scenarios"... I do not think that you can learn how to manage an AX project from either a "book"/"software"/"templates" but this book provides a summary of the core sure step methodology blended with real life scenarios and gives you a jump start. You will definitely tweak it based your client`s needs. Since every client is different, you need to understand how to fit the methodology to your implementation. The book also puts the spotlight on a couple of items that are always under-looked such as infrastructure, environment management, performance and code merge which can definitely result huge delays with a project. In summary, I highly recommended this book to ANY Dynamics AX consultant(PM`s, technical or functional) or other consultants that are planning to get into the AX field.

Get good tips for your next AX 2012 implementation
By Palle Agermark
Implementing Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 with Sure Step is more about actual implementation of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 than the Sure Step methodology itself. You will not learn everything about the methodology by reading the book, but you will get some idea about how you use Sure Step in connection with a Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 implementation.

The book covers every major Sure Step phase, from Diagnostics to Operation. Between the parts about Diagnostics and Operation, the book becomes very Microsoft Dynamics AX specific and it gets very detailed about technical areas about the product. There is a tendency to move in an out between AX technical stuff and the Sure Step model, and it is a bit difficult for the reader to hold the connection between the Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 specific information and related Sure Step activities.

The AX infrastructure is explained in detail, maybe too detailed for a methodology book. Quite a few recommendations here, and in several other places, comes as unsubstantiated claims. I would really have liked to get some more background information to support the claims.

Moreover, I think the book would benefit from having a clearer link between the methodology and the related AX parts and tasks.

However, that said. The authors clearly have a long hands-on experience of doing implementations with Microsoft Dynamics AX. No matter if, you have the same length of experience or you are new to Microsoft Dynamics AX and/or Sure Step and no matter if you are in a technical, functional or project role, you should be able to pick up some useful learnings from the book.

A great book for everyone involved in an AX project
By Klaas Deforche
As a Dynamics AX developer, you are mostly involved in the development phase of a project. When I get involved in other phases I tend to get confused about what's going on, how stuff is decided, organized, planned, etc. If you're a developer and you want to learn about how projects should be run like I do, than this book is exactly what you're looking for.

That being said, I don't think this book is really written for developers. I found it a bit hard to follow at some points, mostly because a lot of new concepts are introduced. I would need a second read-through to get it all. Luckily, this book is definitely worth that.

A lot of project managers and senior profiles would definitely benefit from reading this book. It contains a lot of do's and don'ts that are so true. You'll notice while ready this book saying to yourself "exactly!". If some things are going wrong on your projects, and I bet they are, you'll certainly be able to use this book to improve your project. Or better still, implement Sure Step completely.

The best thing about this book is that it's about both Sure Step and Dynamics AX, so it's all pre-processed for AX projects. You also notice that the authors are really knowledgeable on both subjects.
One thing I didn't like is that although you are installing Sure Step client in the first chapter, it is not really used again in the rest of the book. It's hard to know what documents are actually referred to in the book. I expected doing more with the client while reading through the book.

All in all, this is a great book and I would recommend it to everyone on the team.

Dueling with the Three Musketeers (The Enchanted Attic), by Lisa Samson

Linus and Julia Easterday find themselves in the strangest situations. Repeatedly. And it’s their own fault. “How many other kids our age have Natty Bumpo living in their attic?” Linus complains. And yet, how many other twelve-year-olds know Quasimodo and the Count of Monte Cristo personally? It all began when Linus and Julia, fraternal twins, moved in with their Aunt Portia and Uncle Augustus after their lepidopterologist parents journeyed to the newly discovered island of Stu (named after it’s discoverer, Stu Cranston, of Hohocus, New Jersey) for at least five years to study never-before-seen butterflies. Aunt Portia and Uncle Augustus Sandwich run an antiquarian bookshop. Seven Hills Rare Books attracts customers as eccentric as its owners. (If Aunt Portia, who wears a tiara in her fuzzy, apricot colored hair, thick glasses and cowboy boots, can be considered eccentric. We won’t get into Uncle Augustus. He does, however, drink a lot of tea, eat a lot of sandwiches, and tends to talk with Jesus at any time – even if you happen to be standing in front of him.) Seven Hills, housed in a three story stone townhouse, was once a magic shop owned by second-rate magician Harvey Blackstone. What most people who inhabited Rickshaw Street didn’t know was that behind the dusty front window arranged with faded top hats, dusty wands, and scattered cards, Harvey Blackstone conjured up something truly magical. So magical he disappeared one night. About a month after the children moved in with their relatives, they discovered Harvey’s magic laboratory through a hidden door in the closet of the back bedroom of the third floor. A circle had been burned into the middle of the scarred wooden floor. As it happened, Julia decided to read up there one night when she couldn’t sleep. She’d reclined on the couch and fell asleep while reading her Bible and occasionally sneaking a peek at a novel. As happens sometimes, her arm flopped to the side and her book, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, dropped onto the floor. At 12:03 a.m., the circle began to glow, then pop and hiss and spark like fireworks. Julia woke with a start. At 12:05 a.m. the sparks settled down and there sat Quasimodo and my goodness, he wasn’t happy at all. Or perhaps he was simply scared to death as he had not yet gotten out of his bell tower and suddenly, poof, there he is in the twenty-first century. How long the visitor stays depends on how fast Julia can read the book, cover to cover. If it’s a doozie like Les Miserables, matters can get quite sticky, and believe you me even the shorter books give the twins a great deal of trouble. Imagine having the Frankenstein monster around even for just a day. The bulk of the story is the children’s: how they deal with a raging sea captain in present day, how they manage to get a hunchbacked recluse into the sunshine or a babbling Danish prince to the psychiatrist – and what lessons they take into life.

A Great Read!
By WriterR
This is the third book of The Enchanted Attic series. I thought it was the best one so far. There was a lot more action, new characters, and more fun!

I thought it was interesting how more people were able to come through the enchanted circle. I have not read The Three Musketeers by Alexander Dumas, but I was impressed by Milady, the Countess de Winter. She wasn't so evil after all. I'm impressed how Ophelia, Linus, and Walter are able to treat people kindly and change their lives. The children change the lives of the people they live with as well. I'm impressed with such nice children. We all need to help others like Ophelia, Linus, and Walter do.

My suggestion to you is to get a copy of this book and read it. You will learn about fun book characters and how to be helpful to others.

The world’s safest town might actually be a deadly kind of dangerous. And Nica Ashley is about to learn the hard way.

Nica Ashley is accustomed to traveling the globe with her journalist mother, so when she gets sent to live in a small town with the father she barely knows, she’s in for a bit of a culture shock. Barrington prides itself on being a sleepy, family community with the lowest crime rates in the state of Colorado. There’s even a private security force run by Barrington Technology (BarTech) and a nightly curfew for all residents.

On Nica’s first day at school, she meets Jackson Winters and finds out he went from school superstar to living ghost after his girlfriend disappeared a few months ago. When Nica follows him out after curfew one night, they both witness a mysterious green flash—and the next morning the power has gone out and all the birds are dead.

But secrets are well and alive, and as Nica and some of her friends discover they now have abilities best described as “super,” they also realize that Barrington might not be so safe. And that BarTech is looking for them.

From Publishers Weekly
When Nica Ashley's mother travels to Antarctica for work, Nica is sent to live with her estranged father in the small town of Barrington, Colo., a far cry from the lively overseas locations she's used to, like Bangkok. Barrington is a Stepford community, with a nightly curfew, private security everywhere, and disconcertingly friendly residents. Nica's travels have helped her hone her observation skills, and she soon discovers the town's bizarre secret: nearby Barrington Tech is conducting strange experiments, which somehow imbue Nica and several other teens with superpowers. Forming an unlikely alliance with a peppy cheerleader named Maya, geeky Oliver, and rebellious love interest Jackson, Nica sets out to get to the heart of a mystery that started before she was born, while aware that Bar Tech is ruthlessly hunting those with powers. Though Nica's voice is at times stiff, screenwriter Kruger brings big-screen sensibilities to his debut novel. Comic book tropes, conspiracy theories, intrigue, and romance all come together, fleshed out with memorable characters. Ages 12-up. Agent: Margaret Riley, William Morris Endeavor.

From School Library Journal
Gr 10 Up–Nica Ashley has traveled the world with her journalist mother for most of her 16 years, living in Thailand, India, Chile, and Tanzania. Now her mom insists that she needs stability and sends her to live with her father in Colorado. Everyone in Barrington is ridiculously happy and polite, the entire town seems to be sponsored by a mysterious local business called Bar Tech, and there is a nightly curfew. Classmate and heartthrob Jackson Winters seems to be the only other unhappy curfew breaker around but maybe that is due to his girlfriend's mysterious disappearance. Not living up to her self-proclaimed status as a loner, Nica also befriends Oliver (stereotype geek) and Maya (stereotype cheerleader). Nica, Jackson, Oliver, and Maya all experience extreme physical reactions to an energy “pulse,” and these strange symptoms give them X-Men-type abilities. As they investigate the strange happenings, they come up against the ubiquitous Bar Tech security detail at every stage. The story is not resolved at the conclusion, opening up more questions rather than offering answers. The characters are largely unrealistic, constantly popping out with strange things that a teenager would never say or think (such as Oliver proclaiming that Nica gets “the gold ring” for a correct answer and Nica being able to name the precise make of a handgun because she “watches action movies”). Cringe-worthy phrases  like “…as if his eyes had X-ray vision and could see right through me” make the romantic scenes brutal. The skeleton of Nica's story is marginally interesting, but Kruger's amateurish writing gets in the way too much for it to be enjoyed.–Tara Kehoe, Plainsboro Public Library, NJα(c) Copyright 2013. From Kirkus Reviews
Four very different teens team up to fight the corporation that owns their too-perfect town.

Sixteen-year old Nica has traveled the world with her journalist mom since she was a baby. Sophisticated and self-sufficient, she resents her mother’s decision to send her to live with her doctor father in his little Colorado town. At first, the kids in her new high school treat her with almost too much friendliness, except for Jackson, the handsome bad-boy loner who cruises the streets at night in his classic Mustang GTO. She quickly becomes friends with nerdy Oliver, and then they find a link that brings Jackson to their side: All three have developed superpowers as a result of a strange atmospheric disturbance that occasionally engulfs the town. However, heavy security at Bar Tech Industries forces the trio to keep their investigations discreet, especially when Nica discovers that her father works with Bar Tech, doing tests on the town’s high school students. When unstable Maya also develops a superpower and joins the group, no one can be sure that she’ll keep quiet. In his first novel, screenwriter Kruger keeps tension high as he folds superpowers into a standard but exciting beat-the-evil-corporation plot. Characterizations are varied and not too deep, and there’s some romantic tension foreshadowed for the sequel.

Readers looking for suspense will find it and should enjoy the ride. (Science fiction. 12-16)

Great storyline
By Stephanie @ Reading is Better With Cupcakes
I really enjoyed this story. There was something about it that just made me want to keep going.

That said, this is not a book without its faults.

First, I do not feel that the author really portrayed a girl character very well. There were quite a few moments where Nica didn't quite act or respond how one would think she would.

Also, there were story flaws. For example, at night the town loses its internet and phone. However, about half way through the book, the trio are always texting each other late at night.

There were also a few other things that irked me. The author seemed to poke a lot of fun at antidepressants. He also pointed out way too many times that Nica was a world traveler. I understand shes been every where, stop pointing it out over and over. Also, I don't really think that he knows what picking out an outfit really is for a girl

I was really torn between giving this book 3 or 4 stars, I went with 4 because I really enjoyed the story despite all of its flaws.

Salinger, by David Shields, Shane Salerno

Based on eight years of exhaustive research and exclusive interviews with more than 200 people—and published in coordination with the international theatrical release of a major documentary film from the Weinstein Company—Salinger is a global cultural event: the definitive biography of one of the most beloved and mysterious figures of the twentieth century.

For more than fifty years, the ever elusive author of The Catcher in the Rye has been the subject of a relentless stream of newspaper and magazine articles as well as several biographies. Yet all of these attempts have been hampered by a fundamental lack of access and by the persistent recycling of inaccurate information. Salinger remains, astonishingly, an enigma. The complex and contradictory human being behind the myth has never been revealed.

No longer.

In the eight years since Salinger was begun, and especially in the three years since Salinger’s death, the authors interviewed on five continents more than 200 people, many of whom had previously refused to go on the record about their relationship with Salinger. This oral biography offers direct eyewitness accounts from Salinger’s World War II brothers-in-arms, his family members, his close friends, his lovers, his classmates, his neighbors, his editors, his publishers, his New Yorker colleagues, and people with whom he had relationships that were secret even to his own family. Shields and Salerno illuminate most brightly the last fifty-six years of Salinger’s life: a period that, until now, had remained completely dark to biographers. Provided unprecedented access to never-before-published photographs (more than 100 throughout the book), diaries, letters, legal records, and secret documents, readers will feel they have, for the first time, gotten beyond Salinger’s meticulously built-up wall. The result is the definitive portrait of one of the most fascinating figures of the twentieth century.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, September 2013: Salinger-ians – those who are obsessed with the fabulously successful and famously reclusive Catcher in the Rye author– will find much to argue about in this oral history by filmmaker Shane Salerno (whose related movie is released September 6) and co-writer David Shields. According to the authors and the dozens of people they interviewed, Salinger was an adolescent-girl-obsessed, religious fanatic who suffered from a kind of lifelong PTSD from his years in WWII as well as an embarrassing (to him) physical deformity; he also, according to the authors, used his reclusiveness to his own advantage, stepping out to the press and public when it suited him and the mythology they contend he at least partially created. But even those who couldn’t care less about “the finest mind ever to stay in prep school,” (Norman Mailer) will find themselves surprisingly engaged: from snippets about Salinger’s thwarted love affair with Eugene O’Neill’s daughter Oona, who dumped him for Charlie Chaplin to a lit-crit lesson on how Mark David Chapman could have possibly read Catcher as a manifesto urging him to kill John Lennon, this book says more than most about the world of writing, celebrity and American culture in the 20th century. --Sara Nelson

From Booklist
Coauthors Shields and Salerno take a much different approach to unveiling the hidden life of J. D. Salinger than Kenneth Slawenski took in his J. D. Salinger (2011). Both books represent nearly a decade of research, and both draw on some of the same material—previously published books on and memoirs about the writer, as well as letters made available since Salinger’s death (Shields and Salerno add years of interviews to the mix). Slawenski constructs a traditional biographical narrative from the stew of secondary sources, while Salerno and Shields present the same stew one bite at a time. In fact, their quasi oral history is the print companion to Salerno’s recently released documentary, also titled Salinger. (The book jacket of this volume proclaims itself “the official book of the acclaimed documentary film,” though early reviews of the production have been almost universally negative.) The book and film follow a roughly chronological track, though the reader emerges with much less of a sense of the flow of Salinger’s life here than in Slawenski’s account. Instead, we get an enormous clip book showcasing the authors’ research: excerpts from hundreds of interviews with people who had some contact with Salinger—and dozens more who had no contact at all but experienced some of the same things Salinger did (mainly WWII) or, in the case of various celebrities, were simply moved by his work. (Do we really need to know what The Catcher in the Rye meant to John Cusack?) But the authors have unearthed some genuinely new material, including interviews with Jean Miller, the first of many teenage girls, on the cusp of adulthood, with whom Salinger had a relationship; more commentary from Salinger’s fellow soldiers and from his close friend Paul Alexander than has been previously published; and new interviews with Joyce Maynard, author of a “Daddy Dearest”–style memoir about her years as one of the author’s teen obsessions. Salinger devotees will find all of this laundry airing either endlessly fascinating or cheap and salacious, depending on their tolerance for laundry. But out of all this material, do Shields and Salerno attempt to make sense of this legendarily hidden and peculiar life? Yes, they do, and while many will find quibbles (the excessive attention, for example, paid to the fact that Salinger had only one testicle), overall their vision of Salinger conforms to much of what we have heard before: an ambitious young man who dreamed of publishing stories in the New Yorker, who went through hell in WWII (D-Day, Huertgen Forest, the Battle of the Bulge, Dachau) and who used writing—he worked on Catcher throughout the war—as a kind of meditation, an escape from the horrors of battle; who suffered from 1945 through his death from post-traumatic-stress syndrome, finding that fame was, for him, a new kind of battlefield to find escape from; and who finally did escape from the world by retreating to New Hampshire and by immersing himself in the Hindu philosophy Vedanta. Or, as the authors sum it up, “The war broke him as a man and made him a great artist; religion offered him postwar spiritual solace and killed his art.” It is a consistent point of view, and while certainly an oversimplification, it is well supported by the wealth of commentary included here. What’s lost in all this welter of detail about a troubled man and his peculiar, contradictory life is Salinger’s writing. There are snippets of perceptive analysis from Shields and from some of Salinger’s fellow writers, and there is plenty of connecting the biographical dots (Jean Miller as the model for Esmé in “For Esmé—with Love and Squalor”), but most readers will come away from this book feeling that what’s lost in this messy, muddled hodgepodge of a biography about a messy, muddled life is the precision and clarity of Salinger’s best stories. --Bill Ott

Review
“Unprecedented . . . Nine years in the making and thoroughly documented . . . Providing by far the most detailed report of previously unreleased material, the book . . . both fleshes out and challenges aspects of the author’s legend. . . . [Salinger] has new information well beyond any possible posthumous fiction.” (Hillel Italie The Associated Press)

“Eloquently written and exhaustively reported . . . Salinger is an unmitigated success. . . . Shields and Salerno have struck journalistic gold. Salinger is a revelation, and offers the most complete picture of an American icon, a man deified by silence, haunted by war, frustrated in love—and more frail and human than he ever wanted the world to know. . . . A startlingly revealing story.” (USA Today (3.5 out of 4 stars))

“Revealing . . . [A] sharp-edged portrait.” (Michiko Kakutani The New York Times)

“Vivid . . . There are riches here . . . [Salinger] presents a decade’s worth of genuinely valuable research . . . Salinger doesn’t excuse its subject’s personal failings, but it helps explain them: in his fiction, Salinger had a chance to be the good, untraumatized man he couldn’t be in real life.” (Lev Grossman Time)

“A stupendous work . . . I predict with the utmost confidence that, after this, the world will not need another Salinger biography.” (John Walsh Sunday Times (London))

"Salinger gets the goods on an author's reclusive life. . . . It strips away the sheen of his exceptionalism, trading in his genius for something much more real." (Los Angeles Times)

“Salinger is the thorny, complicated portrait that its thorny, complicated subject deserves. . . . The book offers the most complete rendering yet of Salinger’s World War II service, the transformative trauma that began with the D-Day invasion and carried through the horrific Battle of Hürtgen Forest and the liberation of a Dachau subcamp.” (The Washington Post)

“Engrossing . . . There are fascinating and unique accounts that get to the heart of Salinger. . . . The freshest material comes from Salinger’s letters, which bring his own voice, often adolescent-sounding, into the commentary. Previous biographers didn’t have access to much of this material.” (The Wall Street Journal)

"The reminiscences are layered with a stunning array of primary material. . . . Taken as a whole—the memories, the documents, the pictures—the book feels as close as we'll ever get to being inside Salinger's head." (Entertainment Weekly)

“Juicy . . . Salinger is full of fascinating revelations. . . . The most extensive portrait yet of a writer who spent nearly sixty years doing everything in his power to avoid precisely this kind of exposure.” (The Daily Beast)

“Unprecedented . . . A masterwork . . . An exquisitely researched and beautifully engineered piece of storytelling about one of modern history’s most enigmatic personas.” (Maria Popova Brain Pickings)

“Refreshingly frank about [Salinger’s] many shortcomings and how they might have affected his work . . . Salinger amply documents the author’s youthful arrogance and selfishness, his infatuation with his own cleverness and his inability to see the world from the perspective of anyone who wasn’t a lot like himself.” (Laura Miller Salon)

"An explosive new biography." (People)

"An exhaustively detailed portrait of the famously reclusive novelist." (Denver Post)

Field Notes, Not A Biography
By A. Royse
I waited all day to be able to curl up in bed with this 'biography.' And then I went to bed utterly and completely disappointed. This is NOT a biography. This is, at best, cut-and-pasted field Notes from so much research that the writers must have finally given up on writing anything. It is source material for someone who wants to write a biography, but is is not a book for someone who wants to read a biography.

It is, LITERALLY (in the old sense of the word, not the new one, which has no meaning) hundreds of pages of quotes, loosely organized around a general theme. There is no attempt at a through-line to paint a complete picture, no connecting the dots, no thought whatsoever.

This book is not written. It's not even really edited. It could best be described as curated, but only barely.

And honestly, if it is even just a transcript of the movie, I am no longer interested in seeing the movie...... Such a disappointment.

Unless what you want is field notes, in which case, this is a gold mine. You just have to do all the digging.

Understand Salinger, and you'll understand Holden and Seymour
By Adam
Readers of fiction often wonder whether an author's personal experiences are woven into his or her stories. Biographies about famous writers are attractive because they reveal those connections. "Salinger" is a comprehensive account of J. D. Salinger's affluent youth, horrific war experiences, publishing achievements, romantic failures, and eventual withdrawal from society. By learning about Salinger's life, readers will come to understand Holden Caulfield and Seymour Glass a good deal better.

This book is not, as some reviewers here have implied, a transcript of the "Salinger" documentary film. At over 700 pages, it goes deeper than any movie could. It contains bibliographies of writings by and about J. D. Salinger, brief biographies of the people quoted in the book, and even descriptive sketches of the fictional Glass family. It does not, unfortunately, have an index,
and it is sometimes difficult to tell in what context a statement was made (such as an interview given specifically for this project, or some other source).

Other reviewers have lamented how the book is comprised of quotation after quotation and does not follow a traditional narrative format. But what better way to learn about Salinger's life than to read firsthand accounts directly from the people who knew him? Instead of reading the biographer's description, let Jean Miller, for example, tell how she met Salinger on the beach when she was fourteen (inspiring his stories "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" and "For Esme - With Love and Squalor"). Occasionally, the same stories are told by different voices, although this does not result in monotony, as some reviewers suggest. It only helps to build a more complete account of the man and his experiences, and attentive readers will be intrigued when two eyewitnesses tell slightly different versions of the same event.

This book is not just a repackaging of old Salinger anecdotes, as has been claimed here. It contains new, previously unpublished material that has become available only since Salinger's death, and it concludes with a few tantalizing pages that hint we have not seen the last of the Caulfield and Glass families.

Lesson for me: Never buy without checking the customer reviews.
By Busy Reader: Get To The Point
I reject this . . . collection of words, for the same reasons stated in the other negative reviews. This is not a book, it's a chaotic, repetitive landfill of fragmentary quotes. You may ask why I wrote my own review, if I agreed with the others. I want to do my part to keep the 1-star count high, so people are fairly warned before they waste time and money on this . . . thing.

The trailer for the associated documentary film flashed in front of me at a theater. It looked exciting. I had read only "Catcher In The Rye," and knew little about Salinger the man. When I saw the book, I clicked on it right away. I wish I had checked the customer reviews first. As stated, you get hundreds of pages of disconnected drivel.

Person 1: When Jerry came back from the war, he never was the same.

Person 2: Something happened to him over there.

Person 3: The Jerry who went to Europe was not the Jerry who came home.

These are not actual quotes, but the text is that shallow. The same banal thoughts are repeated ENDLESSLY. Twenty, thirty, fifty times, a new person says exactly the same thing. I stuck it out to the end, curious to see if the 'authors' would provide any conclusion whatever. They do. In the final chapter, they bring their psychological examination of Salinger to a bombastic, unsupported conclusion. This was almost fun, like watching an Olympic competition for blowhards.

This publication is a horrible mess. Try any other book on Salinger, or just go read Wikipedia, you'll be much better off.

During this excruciating yawnfest, I reflected on a larger phenomenon. People like Salerno and Shields ask, "What was wrong with Salinger? He must have been deeply wounded. If he were healthy, he would welcome our attention. How can he want to escape our love--we, his readers? We're fascinating people, after all."

I'd like to turn that question around. What's wrong with us, that we can't accept a man who liked to be left alone? Why can't we accept that he was just not that into us? He liked to do his work and live his life in private. It's really, really simple, unless you argue with it and say it can't possibly be true. I own my part; I bought this wretched book to find out more about J.D. Salinger. At least I didn't stalk him while he was alive. This seems to have been a national sport, as well.

The most fabulous book for anyone raising sheep.
By Waterbourne
I'm writing this from the Northeastern US. I must say that this book is EXCELLENT. This book is British, and it is clear that our neighbors over the pond have certainly learned an incredible amount about sheep over the .... MANY ... years that they have been raising them. The photographs are so useful, and the text is not "wordy" - it's direct and helpful. To date, this is the very best book in our sheep farm's library.

Violet Mackerel's Personal Space, by Anna Branford

Is it possible to leave a piece of you wherever you go? Violet Mackerel thinks so in this fourth illustrated chapter book of a charming series.

Violet Mackerel believes that wherever you leave something small, a tiny part of you gets to stay too—like how the little piece of green sea glass under the mattress at the beach house means that a little piece of Violet gets to stay on summer holiday.

Violet’s theory is put to the test when Mama and Vincent announce some very special news: They are going to get married. And they are all going to move. Violet is excited for the wedding, but Dylan is angry about the move. Normally, it is nice to be inside with your family when there is a big noisy storm outside and there is pumpkin soup for dinner and something on TV about penguins. But it is hard to enjoy it when your brother is outside in the garden in a leaky tent.

When Dylan won’t budge, the wedding preparations feel a bit sad. But just in time, Violet thinks of the perfect way to help Dylan feel better about moving. And her Theory of Leaving Small Things Behind is going to come in handy!

From Booklist
Mama and her boyfriend, Vincent, are getting married. Planning for the wedding is fun, but looking for a new house is divisive. Whereas the previous book, Violet Mackerel’s Natural Habitat (2013), explored Violet’s relationship with big sister Nicola, it’s brother Dylan who comes to the forefront this time. His anger about the move is distressing to Violet, but it allows her to try out one of her new theories in an attempt to bring him round. With its gentle wisdom and sincerity, this series has made a space for itself among early chapter books, and hopefully there are more Violet Mackerel books to come. Grades 2-4. --Kara Dean

Review
"The thoughtful protagonist of Violet Mackerel’s Brilliant Plot (2012) first develops her Theory of Leaving Small Things Behind when her family leaves the beach house where they’ve spent a lovely holiday. Then her mother and her boyfriend, Vincent, announce their plans to marry and move to a larger place. Violet’s excited about the wedding but nervous about the move. Her older brother, Dylan, wanting none of it, relocates to a tent in the garden. The third-person, present-tense narrative convincingly sticks to Violet’s point of view as she and her family negotiate this tricky time.... It is no small thing for a 7-year-old to cope with change. Branford offers chapter-book readers an appealing model." (Kirkus Reviews, June 2013)

Great new small chapter book series
By Debnance at Readerbuzz
It is so lovely to find new small chapter books, just perfect for the children at my primary school. Violet Mackerel's Personal Space is one of these. And what a sad-happy story. Violet's mom has decided to remarry and the whole family will move. That's two sad things for children to deal with but the author, Anna Branford, deals with the sad things in a way that will make the reader feel happy when she finishes the story. That's so nice for children who have to deal with sad things every day.

perfect for children ages 6 - 10, giving parents another way to introduce change
By Gaele
In this illustrated and heartwarming story, Violet is faced with change. In her thoughtful and innocent way she theorizes that you can leave 'pieces' of yourself behind so you really aren't gone, if you leave a small token.

And the changes are coming fast and furiously: her mother is marrying her long term boyfriend, they will have to move house, her brother is unhappy at the idea of moving, and her sister is more excited about a new and bigger room. With reasonable and simple to follow examples and lots of warm fuzzies, this is a good introduction to the idea of big changes.

No one really adores change, and her brother is by far the most upset by the planned move, but when he locks himself in his room, or retreats to a tent in the backyard with the zip closed, it is his 'personal space' and they allow him the time to sort through his feelings. The concept of 'secret spaces' and understanding boundaries and limits are introduced in a way that is easy to understand. While Violet is forever trying to be the peacemaker and wanting to help, her cleverly written notes and illustrations are sweetly thoughtful, and a trait to admire.

I thoroughly enjoyed this little story, perfect for children ages 6 - 10, giving parents another way to introduce change and how the scary feelings don't always have to be so.

I received a copy of the book from the publisher via Edelweiss. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility
