[Making the Scene: Nashville] includes everything to live, network, and succeed in Nashville. This is a very well done collection of everything from where to work out to interviewing and nightclubs. We would recommend it to anyone who is considering the move, even if it is not music related. --Country Line Magazine

Moving to Nashville
By Robert Borland
As a songwriter I'm planning on moving to Nashville in the next few months so I bought a few books about Nashville and found this book to be helpful in a few areas. The interviews are probably the best part of the book especially the ones with ASCAP, BMI and SESAC. There is also an interview with the host of a weekly open mic writers night that was not only informative but it will most likely be the first place I go when I get to Nashville to network and possibly play. As other reviewers have noted there is a lot of informational stuff that breaks up the flow of the book but what is apparent is that this is a first hand account from someone who has a pretty good understanding of how Nashville works and how to make the most of it as a songwriter. I also thought the interviews in the book with songwriters who have moved to Nashville from other parts of the country and are trying to make it was helpful but I wish there were more of those because as we all know we can always learn from the mistakes of others.

An absolute MUST-READ for aspiring Nashville songwriters/musicians!
By Tyler A. James
This book is comprehensive, detailed, and full of valuable insight for any songwriter or musician who is interested in working in Nashville. It provides realistic, common-sense knowledge that is as helpful as it is fun to read.

This book outlines not only how the "real" industry works, but also contains basic information for every-day life in Music City, from what neighborhoods to check out to where to grab lunch or get a haircut.

After reading Making the Scene, I feel much more focused, realistic, and prepared to jump into the Nashville industry. I am keeping my copy so that I can use it as a quick reference guide when I need it.

If you're thinking about moving to Nashville as a songwriter or musician, or you already live there and need some help to get more comfortable and develop a better focus, this book is an absolute must-have.

West Falls, Texas, Population 3,000.

Cassidy Blake read the sign as she crossed the town line into her hometown. "Who says you can't go home again?" she whispered as familiar places rolled into view.

Hunger pains began to roll like thunder through her belly. It served as a reminder that she hadn't eaten since this morning when she'd grabbed coffee and a muffin before hitting the road. At the moment a cheeseburger and fries were calling her name.

She took a quick glance at the clock on the dashboard. Was it really only three o'clock?

She'd arrived an hour earlier than anticipated. Mama and Daddy wouldn't be back home until five. She drove her car down a side street and turned back down Main so that the Falls Diner was on her left side. As if on autopilot, she pulled into the parking lot and parked her car. She drummed her nails on the steering wheel and bit her lip as she gazed out the window at the diner.

Don't be a chicken, she told herself as she took deep calming breaths. You have every right to sit down to a meal in the diner. With a sigh of surrender she unfastened her seat belt and got out of the car, her legs feeling like cement blocks as she walked across the lot.

As soon as she stepped inside, the aroma of food sizzling on the griddle filled her nostrils. Cassidy looked around the room with a sense of wonder. Nothing had changed. The diner looked eerily similar to the way it had looked when she was a senior in high school. The leather booths were still the same pale pink color. The parquet on the floor was still black-and-white diamond shapes. The jukebox still stood in the corner, its neon colors adding life to the diner's ambiance. A smile tugged at the corner of Cassidy's lips as she remembered playing her favorite songs over and over again on it.

A young waitress with the name tag Robin pinned to her uniform came sauntering over to her. Her lips were painted a hot pink that matched her shoulder-length hair. She was chewing her gum as if it was the only morsel of food she'd be eating all day. A big smile was plastered on her face. Cassidy determined that she couldn't be any more than eighteen years old.

"Welcome to the Falls Diner. Party of one?" Robin asked in a perky voice.

"Yes, it's just me," she answered, casting a furtive glance around the diner.

Robin gestured toward the dining area. "Take whatever booth you like." When Cassidy sat down at the nearest booth, Robin placed a menu in front of her and asked, "Do you need a few minutes with the menu?"

"No," Cassidy answered with a polite smile. "I'll have a volcano cheeseburger, curly fries and a chocolate shake."

"Sounds like you've been here before."

Cassidy nodded, deciding not to tell the waitress how many times she'd ordered that same meal. Cheeseburger, fries and chocolate shake. She'd practically lived on that meal when she was a teenager. Back then she hadn't given a thought to calories or fat content. She'd been young and carefree, filled with the knowledge that she was one of the most popular girls in town with a killer figure and a face to match.

Those were the days, she thought with a sigh. Or had they been? Had they ever been as perfect as she 'd liked to believe?

As the daughter of the town's beloved pastor, Cassidy had been forced to rise to the high expectations of her father and the entire congregation. It had been like living in a pressure cooker, and for the first eighteen years of her life she'd done it without complaint. Perhaps it would have been better if she'd objected or rebelled, she realized. Perhaps it would have been better if she hadn't tried so hard to be Little Miss Perfect.

Cassidy shut her eyes to block out the painful memories. She chose instead to focus on one of her favorite scriptures, one that continually brought her hope and made her feel as if she wasn't so alone. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Yes, she had sinned in the past. Yes, she had brought shame to her family. Yes, she had forever altered the life of her best friend. But did that mean she didn't deserve forgiveness? She wasn't an evil person. She hadn't willingly caused anyone pain. She'd been reckless, foolish and immature, which had been a recipe for disaster. But all that was in the past. She couldn't beat herself up anymore over it. All she could do was try and make amends.

When Robin brought her order to the table, Cassidy grabbed the cheeseburger and took a huge bite, a trickle of juice dribbling down her lips as she sent a prayer of thanks to the Lord. There was no place that made cheeseburgers like the ones at the Falls Diner. She put the cheeseburger down and reached for her chocolate shake, taking a huge sip to wash some of her meal down.

As she munched on the cheeseburger her eyes darted around the diner. Thankfully the other waitress on the floor, a woman in her early forties, was unfamiliar to her. It was only a matter of time, she knew, until she ran into one of her classmates or a member of her father's congregation. The mere thought of it made her palms moisten and her heartbeat quicken.

The diner had been the local gathering place for the cool crowd in high school, and she had been in the thick of it, holding court at a table with her best friends as if they owned the establishment. The four roses. They'd been young, beautiful and popular, with promising futures stretched out in front of them. Darkness had never touched their world, until the night the accident turned their lives upside down.

"I thought these old eyes were playing tricks on me." The gritty voice brought her out of her reverie and transported her back to a more innocent place and time.

The white-haired gentleman standing before her was Doc Sampson, the owner of the Falls Diner. He still looked the same with the exception of a few more wrinkles around his forehead and eyes. Doc had been a part of her childhood and adolescence, a man who had always been there with a jovial smile and words of encouragement.

"Doc!" she exclaimed, jumping up from her seat and wrapping her arms tightly around him. Doc hugged her back, his hands patting her on the back in a reassuring gesture.

"Cassidy! I didn't think it was possible for you to get more beautiful, but you've turned into a lovely young woman," Doc said as he broke away from the hug.

"Thanks, Doc. The years have been good to you, as well. You haven't changed a bit."

"Seeing you is really taking me back. I remember you gals used to sit in that booth over there next to the jukebox. What was it they called you girls?" He snapped his fingers as it came to him. "The four roses. That's it! You were my favorite customers. Did I ever tell you that?" His voice softened to a whisper. "Shame about what happened."

Cassidy nodded her head in agreement rather than run the risk of bawling her eyes out over Doc's kindness and sensitivity. She hadn't expected to be greeted by either in her hometown.

"Would you like to sit in that booth? For old time's sake?" Doc had a hopeful gleam in his eye, as if by seating her in the booth it might erase the events of eight years ago. If only it were that easy, she thought wistfully. She knew all too well the impossibility of turning back the clock.

"No thanks. I think I'll stay where I am," she said as she sat back down in her booth. She wasn't quite ready for that walk down memory lane.

"Suit yourself, young lady." As he walked away toward the counter, he turned back to her and said, "It's nice to see you back in town. West Falls hasn't been the same without you."

"Thanks, Doc. That means a lot to me." Tears of emotion gathered in her eyes, and she sniffled a few times to rein herself in. She didn't want to surrender to a full-on sob fest. She had no desire to bring attention to herself. Although she'd known coming back home would be an emotional experience, she hadn't realized how quickly she would succumb to the flood of feelings.

The jingle of the bell heralded the arrival of another customer in the diner. She glanced up just in time to see a tall, broad-shouldered man with chocolate-brown hair step through the doorway. He was wearing a law enforcement uniform, complete with a gold badge and a cowboy hat. The nerves on the back of her neck began to prickle with awareness. Her body tensed up, while a little voice in her head urged her to run, to get away from this place as soon as possible.

But there was nowhere to run, she realized with a sinking sensation. Nowhere to hide.

Lord, give me the strength to make it past this moment.

He turned toward her and their eyes locked—she could see a hundred different emotions reflected in his. Recognition. Disbelief. Those arctic-blue eyes that she used to love gazing into now skewered her to the spot. For a moment time stood still as they took stock of each other.

"Cassidy," he said, saying her name as if it were a question.

"Afternoon, Tate," she said with a nod of her head in his direction.

She could tell just by looking at his face that she'd caught him off guard. He hadn't had time to prepare himself for seeing her. For one brief instant she'd seen a look of joy sweep over him before it was quickly replaced with one of indifference. Off guard was putting it mildly, she imagined. After all it wasn't every day that your ex-fiancée rose up to greet you like a bittersweet memory from the past.

"Mama told me you made sheriff," she said, her voice sounding stilted to her own ears. "Congratulations."

"Yup," he acknowledged with a curt nod of his head. "After Keegan retired, I was elected sheriff."

"It was always your dream, even back when we were kids. I know what it must mean to you."

"It wasn't my only dream, Cass," he said, his eyes icy and flat. "You'd know about that more than anyone."

Unable to meet his gaze, Cassidy looked down and began twirling her fingers around and around. Although she wanted nothing more than to look into those eyes and to remember what it felt like to be loved by him, she couldn't bear to see the coldness in their depths. Not when his cool blue eyes had once burned so brightly for her. Not when there was so much that remained unsaid between them, things that had been buried and lost in the aftermath of tragedy.

"What brings you back to town?" he asked with a frown.

Cassidy looked up and met his steely eyes.

"My mother has breast cancer. She's scheduled for surgery next week. I'm here to help her with her treatment and recovery."

Tate's jaw clenched, and his features tightened. "I'm real sorry to hear that. Your mama is a good woman."

"Please don't share this with anyone," she blurted out. "I mean…it's private, at least for now. Until she decides to tell everyone."

"You know me better than that, Cassidy. I won't tell a soul. That's a promise." His voice rang with conviction.

She knew better than to question Tate's word. He was as reliable as the rising sun in the morning. As far back as she could remember his word had always been bond.

"Tate, how is Holly doing?" she asked softly, the words tumbling out before she could rein them back in.

Tate's eyes widened and his face instantly hardened into a cold mask as she watched. His eyes flashed dangerously. "You've had eight years to ask that question. But you never did. You could've called, written, sent a text." Tate's lip curled upward in disgust. "But you did nothing, Cassidy. Absolutely nothing. So please, don't ask about my sister. You lost that right a long time ago."

Shame washed over her like a tidal wave, making her feel unworthy of even sitting in this booth eating a cheeseburger. It was strange, since she'd once thought she couldn't feel any deeper shame than she'd already felt. With a few scathing words, Tate had just proven her wrong.

For years she'd prayed to God to make these feelings go away, to wash away the shame so she could move forward with her life. And, for a while, she'd believed that her prayers had been answered. Until now. Until Tate rid her of that notion with his icy blue eyes and no-nonsense talk.

"You're right," she acknowledged as pain seared through her. "I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable."

"Uncomfortable? Is that your take on it?" Tate let out a harsh laugh and shook his head as if in disbelief. "You have yourself a nice afternoon, Cassidy."

Cassidy watched him turn his back on her and walk away. The heels of his cowboy boots tapped noisily against the floor as he made his way to the other side of the diner. Heat seared her cheeks as Doc shot her a look filled with pity. The cheeseburger turned to sawdust in her mouth, and she found it near-impossible to swallow past the huge lump in her throat. With shaking fingers she reached into her purse and pulled out a twenty dollar bill, placing it in the middle of the table where Robin couldn't help but spot it. She gave Doc a shaky wave before she hustled herself out the door and into the sultry May air. For the first time since she'd locked gazes with Tate Lynch she allowed herself to breathe—huge gulps of air that did nothing to quell the anxiety holding her in its grip.

Tate was sitting at the counter in the far left corner of the diner. His insides had churned at the thought of sitting in close proximity to Cassidy Blake. A hundred times or more he'd imagined coming face-to-face again with his ex-fiancée. None of his fantasies had come close to the stark reality. His heart had practically stopped beating the moment he'd realized that she was back in West Falls. He'd walked into the diner for his usual coffee and slice of pie, expecting to do nothing more than sit at the counter for a spell and listen to Doc's congenial chatter about the goings-on in town.

And then it had happened. Pow. He'd looked over and seen her at a booth, enjoying the best cheeseburger in the entire state.

She was still jaw-droppingly beautiful. West Falls High hadn't voted her prom queen for nothing. In mere seconds he'd taken it all in. The heart-shaped face. The strawberry blond hair that hung in waves past her shoulders. The sea-green eyes that always seemed to be full of mystery. Full, ruby lips. A smattering of freckles crisscrossed the bridge of her nose and extended to the landscape of her cheeks. She was all woman now, he realized. No longer the eighteen-year-old girl, fresh out of high school.

She hadn't changed much over the years, unless you counted the wary expression in her eyes that had replaced her youthful exuberance and zest for life. He supposed he couldn't blame her for being wary. Coming back to West Falls after all this time was bound to be an explosive experience, not only for Cassidy, but for everyone in town who'd been affected by her actions. Considering everything that had gone down before she'd left, she'd be dodging land mines the entire time she was here.

Love this new author!
By Bunnyhop
I really enjoy discovering a new author, especially when it turns out that the book is a good one! I will definitely be reading the next book from this author! Belle writes great characters and I enjoyed the storyline of this book. We've all made mistakes, although perhaps not to the degree as the heroine in this book. She had lived with the consequences of a bad mistake from her teenage life but didn't stick around long enough at the time to know what happened in the following years. When she comes back a number of years later, she finds out all that happened in those years and she has to deal with all of that, plus deal with her ex-fiancée. Both of them still have very strong feelings for each other. I really like all of the characters, not just the main ones. I look forward to hearing good things from Belle and her next book!

Awesome reading!!!
By Kimberly Painter
This book, the author... WOW!!! The storyline sucks you in to all of the heartache, the redemption, the fears, the laughter! Every character is clearly defined. How the past has hurt them, how they moved from that initial moment, & who they are now!!! This is a story of 4 girls - the best of friends... & how 1 night of tragedy changed their lives, the lives of those around them, & their town forever!!!

This was Cassidy's story and I am praying this author will tell the story of the other 3 to tie it all in! How does Holly handle finding out one of her parents deceived her? Why is Jenna such a recluse now & why is she so afraid of breaking their silence? What's the story on Regina? Do they come clean to the whole community? Staying tuned to find out!!! I really recommend this book & cannot wait to read more from this author!!! She's got a fan for life in me!!!!

Wonderful book!!!
By Evelitza
I was totally capture from the moment I opened this book. You will see the way God moves in our life. I know this book is fiction but we can learn from this book what friendship is all about and the power of forgiveness. There's 4 girls, friends and this book tells us what Cassidy one of the 4, had to go through, but also what she learn, that running away from situations is not the answer.
I recommend this book 100%. You will not regret buying this book and you will be wondering and waiting for this author's next books, especially to find out what happens to the others 4 girls. Can't wait!!!

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-Tessa Waye was Wicket Tate's best friend until five years ago when Wick's drug-dealing father drove them apart. When Tessa commits suicide and her diary is left on the teen's front steps, Wick suspects there might be a dark reason she jumped to her death. Wick and her sister, Lily, are now free of their criminal father, living a shiny new life on the ritzy side of town with their foster parents. But Wick resists the temptation to immerse herself in this white-picket-fence lifestyle. She's always ready to run, or hide, because she fears her father will come back for them. Wick, an untrusting outcast, is an antiheroine to root for. Distraught by Tessa's fate and her own past, she sets out to use her hacking skills to track down the man responsible for her ex-friend's death. She is all too aware of her talent but woefully ignorant of her redeeming qualities that cause Griff, a fellow hacker, to fall in love with her. Bernard's debut is notable for its readability, genre-crossing blend of thrills and romance, and its something-for-everyone qualities.-Jamie-Lee Schombs, Loyola School, New York Cityα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
When a dead girl’s diary is left on 16-year-old Wick’s doorstep, she decides to use her skills as a hacker to investigate. It turns out that the girl committed suicide after her involvement with a pedophile, whose attentions drove her to the fatal act. Things then get personal when it appears that Wick’s younger sister, Lily, is the pedophile’s next target. Meanwhile, Wick’s brutal, drug-dealing father, who is on the run from police, appears and is determined to involve his daughter in a computer scam. How will Wick handle all of this? Will her growing friendship with her computer lab partner, Griff, help? Yes, there is a lot going on in Bernard’s suspenseful first novel. Although the subplot about Wick’s father veers dangerously close to the gratuitous, Bernard still manages to keep a successful handle on her disparate story lines, maintaining the fast-paced, nail-biting action of this compulsively readable mystery, which will have readers on the edge of their seats. Clearly, Bernard’s debut is an auspicious one that will leave readers hungry for more. Grades 9-12. --Michael Cart

For the Love of Up All Night
By Natalie Richards
This book should come with a disclaimer. Because if you actually planned to do anything productive the day it arrives, you are sadly mistaken. Find Me just won't allow for that.

Bernard starts the story with so much bang, you feel sucker punched, and I mean that in the best possible way. Her voice is razor sharp, brutally honest, and sometimes so beautiful it steals your breath. Wick is a tough-as-nails heroine who makes hard choices with a mix of resolve and fear that keeps you following her, page after page. She believes in saving herself, but Griff is just the hero to add a little heat and help to her journey.

This is not your everyday mystery and it isn't a book to be missed. Buckle up and get ready for your mind to be blown.

The only problem with Find Me is that it does, in fact end. Lucky for us, book two should be out next year!

Young Adult Mystery/Thriller at it's best!
By Literary Meanderings
"When did I stop believing in happy endings? Maybe I never did."

Wick Tate doesn't have an ideal life. Her mother jumped from a building to end her own life, her father is a sociopathic felon, she and her sister are in the foster system--currently on foster family #4, and the police may be onto her hacking business.

Every decision Wick makes is for her sister, Lily. She hacks to make money so they can make it on their own; so they can run if their father ever comes for them. She lies about the detective stalking them so as not to frighten Lily. She makes herself a rock, never letting anyone inside. Her sister is all that matters to her.

Until a dead girl's diary shows up on her doorstep with two simple words:

"FIND ME"

Tessa Waye used to be Wick's very best friend. Until Tessa's parents decided Wick was trash and forbade them from seeing each other ever again. From then on, Tessa walked right by Wick as if she didn't even exist.

Tessa then became the epitome of a popular in-crowd girl at school. On the outside, her life was perfection. On the inside? Turmoil, despair, loneliness. Tessa decided to end it all with a jump.

So how did Tessa's diary end up on Wick's doorstep? Why did Tessa Waye decide to end her own life? Someone thinks Wick can find the answers.

- - -

Ohhhh, where to begin? Find Me is quite the debut! Romily Bernard floored me here. I am a little bit speechless, to be honest.

I guess I can start at the beginning. :)

Find Me opens up with a chill. Right off the bat, Romily paints us a perfect picture of Wick's hacking abilities and the reasons behind it. She also paints a perfect picture of Detective Carson--the man who sits outside their house every night, creeping, stalking, waiting... until this night. He gets out of his car and actually tries to get into the house. Wick is at the ready with a baseball bat, her sister Lily behind her, terrified.

And I won't go any further... but my point is that the author sets up the story fantastically. I was engrossed from the very first moment. This thrill and suspense doesn't let up. It's continues through the entire book and only gets more intriguing and mysterious. It'll definitely capture your attention and hold it.

There is a bit of romance mixed into the story. Griff is our book boyfriend here, and he is a great one! The spark between he and Wick is something they've both been ignoring for awhile now. They begin spending more time together and learn they have more in common than they ever imagined--some good, some very very bad. After battling with herself on whether or not to trust him, Wick lets Griff in on her issue with Tessa's diary. Griff then joins the hunt for the man who drove Tessa to her fatal jump. As they grow closer to finding the guy, they also grow closer to one another.

"Three years, Wicked. I waited three years, and you were worth every damn second."
Now I'm smiling.
"Again," I whisper, and we kiss and kiss until want rolls through me like honey and lights me up like gasoline.

I'm impressed that Romily Bernard was able to balance the romance and mystery/thriller elements so well. It's a perfect mix; not too much of one or the other. Griff is a character you will definitely love in more ways than one.

One major thing I liked about this book was this: At the beginning of each chapter we get a snippet of Tessa's diary. This allowed us to know her and her situation from the inside out. This was a great way to let us get to know her despite the fact that she is dead from the beginning of the book. The diary snippets are powerful and moving, but sad and bleak at the same time. You can see her falling apart right before your eyes and if this were a real-life situation, I imagine reading the things in this diary would be so very hard for anyone, especially a girl who used to be best friends with the person. Wick does go through bouts of guilt and wonder at the fact that no one knew what was going on with Tessa. She hid it all so perfectly that no one suspected a thing.

"He never stares at me, never does anything improper, when we're around other people.
He's too careful. Looking at us, no one would even guess. Funny, how... everyone still stares at me.
That's why I had to learn to disappear.
Right in front of their eyes, I vanished.
--Page 82 of Tessa Waye's diary"

The story definitely comes with a darkness. Tessa was going through something awful, and the saddest part is that she kept letting it happen over and over. It was tough to put myself in her place and to sympathize, but she is a young girl and hadn't learned the life lessons to yet that'd help her to fully understand what she was allowing to happen. Once I realized that, and realized her ultimate sacrifice, I felt so close to her character. Tessa Waye is someone who will stay with me forever.

As for the mystery, well, that was amazingly done. As with any great mystery-maker, Romily Bernard set everything up wonderfully. She dropped hints at all the right moments and pointed us in three or four different directions. She kept me on my toes and kept me guessing. I was never 100% sure who the mysterious guy was until very close to the actual reveal. And what a reveal it was! I won't go into details, as that would be totally spoilery, but it was huge! It was very cinematic. I could see it all playing out perfectly. I think this book would make a fantastic movie! Viewers would be on the edges of their seats. ;)

Overall, Find Me was perfect from cover to cover. I love the characters. I feel they were well-built and very realistic. I loved the suspense and the mystery. I think the romance was perfectly done and very well-balanced. I absolutely loved the ending. It was dramatic and high-velocity. I should also mention that although not a cliffhanger, Bernard left the ending open for a second book! Hell yes! Give me more!

Do I recommend this book? Definitely! Instant favorite. If you haven't gotten a copy yet, you should probably go and do that now!

*This book does contain violence and some slightly adult themes of the sexual and verbal nature. Nothing too heavy.*

OK
By Gracie
I was mostly quite impressed with Find Me. Wick is a great character. She is broken and brilliant and brave. She is the kind of heroine that sticks with you. Her twisted family loyalties and love for her little sister ring true. She sees the world with a cynicism that suits her history but also keeps the story moving.

The set up is classic and works well. Wick receives a journal that is a voice from the dead. A former friend has been murdered and her diary lays out the details of her life before her death.

Now things fall apart a little. Wick is this amazing hacker and figures out a great deal of things very quickly. She reads people naturally as a kid coming from an unsafe home. But the identity of the bad guy is pretty evident and she doesn't pick it up. It seems like she would have been on that way faster. So instead of being a big reveal it is more waiting for Wick to get a clue. I spent a fair bit of the story yelling, "Dude, he is right there" in my mind.

That bit also makes the ending pretty impossible. But it is nice to root for Wick anyway.

From Booklist
Life’s been hard for 12-year-old Randi Rhodes since her mom died a year ago. But Randi—aspiring detective and tae kwon do black belt—finds distraction and satisfaction by anonymously solving crimes in her Brooklyn neighborhood, despite the fact her famed mystery writer dad has retreated into himself and stopped writing. When they relocate to Deer Creek, Tennessee, Randi worries she is done with detective work, but she spies opportunity when a 200-year-old time capsule, possibly containing treasure that would prevent the town’s bankruptcy, disappears during the Founder’s Day Festival. She partners with and befriends D.C. and Pudge, two other newcomers, to find the capsule and save the town. Oscar winner Spencer’s debut features some familiar characters and plot conventions—haunted cabins, secret tunnels, corrupt politicians—but overall, is an entertaining, suspenseful read. Randi’s grief over her mother, and desire for her father’s attention, add a layer of vulnerability to her appealing character. An appendix includes activities from taking footprint casts to recipes for referenced foods. Grades 4-6. --Shelle Rosenfeld

Case of the Time-Capsule Bandit CHAPTER ONE THE FINAL CASE
Gotcha! Randi Rhodes thought. Now smile real big for the camera.

Down on the sidewalk, three stories below her bedroom window, the man in the navy suit checked over his shoulder to make sure no one was watching. It was six o’clock on a Friday morning. Most of Randi’s Brooklyn neighbors were still snuggled up in their beds, but Randi had gotten up at the crack of dawn, just as she had for the past three days. She’d been on a stakeout for over an hour, never budging from her post while she waited for the man to show up with his dog.

Randi snapped several photos of the man and a few more of his prissy white Pekingese. And when the pair hurried off around the corner, she zoomed in for a close-up of the mess that the dastardly villains had left behind. The pretty pink tulips she’d planted as bait in front of her house had been ripped up at the roots. The only things left behind were a hole in the ground and a sprinkling of soil on the sidewalk.

How many gardens have you destroyed? she thought. How many old ladies have woken up to find their pansies plucked and their rosebushes ransacked? How many kids won’t get to enjoy the first flowers they ever helped plant? How many lives have you made a little less beautiful? All because you’re too cheap to buy your flowers from a florist.

Randi downloaded the photos onto her computer and printed out a few of the best. The man in the pictures lived three blocks away. He’d been her prime suspect for quite some time. Front-yard flowers had been disappearing every morning since the man and his family had moved into the neighborhood. However, until now, the evidence against him had been circumstantial. Finally, Randi had proof.

Another case closed. Randi congratulated herself. She folded the pictures and stuffed them into an envelope. Then she typed out a note on her computer.

Dear Sir,

At 6:10 a.m. on the morning of June 15th, you were photographed stealing tulips from a garden on Bergen Street. Since you’re new to the neighborhood, you might not be aware that there are many fine florists within a few blocks of your home. From now on, please visit one of these businesses whenever you want a few freshly cut flowers. If you keep “weeding” your neighbors’ front yards, I’ll make sure that every gardener in Brooklyn knows who to thank.

Randi rooted through her desk for her favorite pen, a blue ballpoint with a chewed-up cap she’d found among her mom’s old things. She signed the letter Glenn Street.

~ ~ ~ ~

A few hours later, with her belly full of breakfast, Randi shoved the envelope into the back pocket of her jeans and set off to make the delivery.

“Hey!” her dad called when he heard the front door open. “Where ya going?”

“Just for a walk around the block,” Randi told him. “I’ll be right back.”

“I hope so,” he said. “We’re leaving on Sunday and you haven’t even packed.”

Randi frowned. “I’m waiting for you to change your mind.”

“Not going to happen. So don’t disappear. And, hon?”

“What?”

“Please. Be careful!”

Be careful? Randi thought miserably as she stomped down the street. I’m not the one you should be worried about. What’s going to happen to the neighborhood if you drag me away? I keep these streets clean. I take the cases that the NYPD won’t bother with. Who else is going to catch all the litterbugs? Who’s going to bring Brooklyn’s bullies, plant snatchers, and pigeon nappers to justice?

~ ~ ~ ~

When she reached the man’s house, she could see his white Pekingese peeping out of the parlor window. A vase filled with pretty pink tulips sat on a table next to the sofa. Randi scrambled up the building’s stoop and shoved her envelope through the mail slot. In the past, she would have tried to be more discreet. Who cares if they ID me? I’m leaving Brooklyn forever. Besides, maybe it’s time everyone knows I’m the real Glenn Street.

It stung a bit to think that none of the neighbors had ever figured it out. Randi might have solved thirty-two cases, but adults just saw a tall kid with knobby knees; fiery red ringlets; and a freckled, moon-shaped face. They never saw the real Miranda Rhodes. Most people in the neighborhood believed Randi’s dad was Brooklyn’s mysterious watchdog. After all, Glenn Street was the heroine of his bestselling detective books. But Herb Rhodes would usually laugh out loud whenever the subject was raised. He claimed he was flattered that a crime-fighting vigilante had decided to borrow his character’s name.

Randi wondered how he’d feel if he ever found out that the vigilante in question was his twelve-year-old daughter.

My Sons and I LOVE this book! Fun! Interactive!! GREAT Characters!!
By Kelly Vasconcelos
I LOVE this book and so do my two boys (ages 5 and 8). "The Case of the Time-Capsule Bandit (Randi Rhodes, Ninja Detective)" has also been chosen as the next book read by my 8 year-old son's reading group at school...and he's thrilled! We love the characters and the interactive nature of the book! It also reminds me of favorite detective stories I read as a young girl. I LOVE Randi's character and find her having qualities that kids can relate too. I love the idyllic setting of Deer Creek too!

Fast read, fun, exciting, diversified
By Mitz888
I bought this book for my nine-year-old son because he loves Ninjas, detective stories, mysteries, etc. I read it first and thought it was great ... and I can't wait until the next one comes out! It's a great mystery that includes lessons on friendship and dealing with the feelings of being an outsider in a new place. Our son thought it was "cool" and didn't want to stop reading at bedtime. He even got up early the next morning so he could read more before school. I think Octavia Spencer did a great job with this first book and look forward to more in the series.

Kids Will Get a Kick Out of This Charming, Fast-Paced Tale
By DawnTeresa
Randi Rhodes doesn’t want to leave Brooklyn — the neighborhood needs her! Operating anonymously under the name Glenn Street (the fictional heroine of her father’s popular mystery series), she’s been solving crimes considered too petty for the police. As the book opens, we witness Randi on stakeout waiting to catch a garden thief in the act with a tulip-planted trap.

Randi’s mother has recently died. Life hasn’t been the same for her and her father who are both still clearly in mourning. Her dad’s stopped writing and has decided to replant the family in the small Tennessee town of Deer Creek. Trading the big city for a stick in the mud town leaves Randi feeling like her life is over. She soon learns, though, that this town also needs her investigative skills!

Octavia Spencer has created a spunky heroine in fiery redhead Randi, and assembled an agreeable cast of characters around her. This is another title for the #WeNeedDiverseBooks campaign. Two of the supporting cast are Latino and African-American — Dario Cruz, who goes simply by “D.C.”, and the ironically named “Pudge” Taylor. The small-town setting is well conveyed with all the expected players present — the town gossip, the town sheriff (who happens to be female), and the town eccentric, Angus McCarthy. The novel is well paced, and the mystery unfolds naturally, with clues left for readers to follow and unravel alongside the fictional friends. Though I figured out a large chunk of the mystery, it’s sophisticated enough that kids aren’t likely to solve it prematurely.

As kids read along, they are encouraged to stop at certain places (or do it afterward) and flip to one of the eight appendices at the back to complete different “Ninja tasks”. These creative additions, that are sure to be a hit with kids, include things relevant to the story like instructions for conducting a stakeout, getting rid of skunk stink, and making caramel apples. I am reminded of the Curious George title I read as a child that came with instructions on how to make a boat out of folded paper that you could then sail in the sink or bathtub. So much pleasure can be derived from such a small task! And here at book’s end there are eight such pleasures awaiting!

Spencer injects just enough pathos into the story to lend depth without getting too sad or too “mushy” for kids. Randi is a generous heart and she finds that by helping someone else, she forgets her own troubles. At its core, this is a novel about family, friendship, and team-work.

Verdict: 4 of 5 hearts. A Strong Opening to an Appealing Middle Grade Mystery Series. Kids will get a kick out of this charming, fast-paced tale. The “Ninja tasks” are a unique addition that may inspire kids to do their own sleuthing. Engaging full page illustrations by cover artist Vivienne To bring the story to life. Recommended!

Breaking News Chapter 1

FOOTBALL SEASON BEGINS; MARTONE FALLS FOR STAR QUARTERBACK

If you’re a fact-loving person like I am, you probably think superstitions are a little silly. So tell me, why does it seem like everyone believes in them? Take my mom, for instance. You would think that a freelance accountant, a person who works with numbers all day, would know that there’s nothing particularly special or spooky about the number thirteen. Except that every time the calendar shows a big black thirteen on a Friday, Mom gets an uneasy look in her eye. It’s like she’s waiting for something really bad to happen. Of course nothing does, just like nearly every other day of the year!

As a journalist, my instincts are to get to the truth of the matter. So I started Googling, and I found some interesting information about “friggatriskaidekaphobia.” (That’s the actual term for the condition of the fear of Friday the thirteenth. And I dare you to say that three times fast!) Did you know that in Spanish-speaking countries, it’s Tuesday the thirteenth that’s considered unlucky? And in Italy, Friday the seventeenth is the day of doom. I figure that kind of info will come in handy when I’m traveling the world on assignment as an investigative reporter.

But the next step on my career path is to continue to build my reputation as star reporter of the Cherry Valley Voice, our school newspaper. Of course, I don’t usually fly solo. Mr. Trigg likes to give the best articles to his dream team, his “Woodward and Bernstein,” as he calls Michael Lawrence and me, after the Washington Post’s legendary reporting duo. I’m not sure we’ll ever get behind the scenes at the White House, but we did write the story that revealed the truth about our class president contenders.

Not that I’m complaining about sharing the glory. Not one teensy bit. I won’t even mind if someday Michael and I get picked to be coeditors in chief. Then I’ll get to work side by side with him all the time. I’ve known Michael since kindergarten, and even though he sometimes annoyingly calls me Pasty (you eat paste one time when you’re five and you’re branded forever!), he’s still the only boy I’ve ever dreamed of calling my boyfriend.

How can I describe Michael Lawrence’s insane cuteness to you? Let’s just say that if you took the hottest member of every boy band, mixed up all of their best qualities in a pot, and then increased them to the tenth power, well, then you’d have Michael Lawrence. It’s actually shocking that he hasn’t been discovered yet, now that I think about it. Popular Athlete/Reporter Leaves Cherry Valley for World Tour. As if! Of course, I don’t really know if he sings. He definitely doesn’t dance (I’ve seen him!), and I’m not sure that he plays an instrument, so I don’t know what he’d actually do on tour. Probably just look cute. Luckily, Michael has many other talents, including writing, sports, and making the best cinnamon buns I’ve ever tasted. Maybe someone on a cooking show could draft him. He’d make such a dreamy host. I know I’d watch him. Anyway, I’m surprised someone hasn’t offered something to him to make him a star.

One offer that I couldn’t turn down was continuing to write the Dear Know-It-All column for the Voice. Dear Know-It-All is the advice column that I write secretly. No one, not even my BFF, Hailey Jones, knows that I’m Know-It-All. It’s cool, but it’s kind of stressful, too. Mr. Trigg caught me off guard when he offered me a second year of the secret assignment. And considering all the drama from last year—like, “Hello, cyber stalker!”—I definitely have had some doubts about the job. Sometimes giving advice is really hard and I’m just not sure what to tell people to do. Like right now, I can’t even decide what to wear to Cherry Valley’s first game of the football season. And since Michael Lawrence is the all-star quarterback, this is a very crucial decision!

So back to superstitions: I don’t have many, being a believer in cold, hard facts, but I do have a lucky green T-shirt. (Its luck is based on the fact that it is the exact same shade of green as my eyes.) Maybe it’s not really lucky, but it does make me really happy. I put it on with a long hippy skirt and green UGGs. I wrapped a sparkly beaded scarf around my neck. Then I threw on an armful of bangle bracelets and some beaded hanging earrings for a little extra pizzazz. I looked in the mirror. Not bad, Martone, I thought to myself.

But the real proof waited across the hallway. I knocked on my sister Allie’s door. Allie can be a real pain because she’s always creeping around my stuff, but she does have much better fashion sense than I do.

“What do you think?” I asked as I warily entered her room.

Allie glanced up from her texting for exactly one one-hundredth of a second and rolled her eyes. “No,” she huffed, obviously revolted by my choice of apparel. “Just no.”

“But it’s my lucky shirt,” I explained.

“Lucky because you’re going to fold it up and put it back in your drawer,” Allie said bluntly. “And that scarf? That jewelry? You do realize you’re going to a football game, right?”

Allie took my hand and led me back into my room the way she used to drag me across the street when I was too little to cross by myself. She opened my closet door and started picking out items and throwing them onto my bed.

“Allie, I don’t have a lot of time to try on clothes,” I complained. “Hailey will be here any minute!”

Like I mentioned before, Hailey is my best friend forever—yin to my yang. But if you didn’t know us well, you might think we have absolutely nothing in common. She can juggle a soccer ball effortlessly. I have trouble making it down the stairs without falling flat on my face. I get my highest marks in language arts. Hailey’s dyslexia makes reading and writing challenging for her. Hailey’s happy in sweats and her soccer team jersey, and she always looks great in them too. I like to look a little more put together. At least, I try. But as Allie was so kind to point out, I can just as easily fail, too.

“This won’t take long,” Allie said. “Just listen. You’re the starting QB’s girlfriend. You have to look great, but not like you’re trying too hard. Think casual chic.”

“I’m not Michael Lawrence’s girlfriend!” I said automatically. Well, I didn’t think I was. But I’d like to be.

“Whatever.” Allie snorted. “Just take my advice.”

I flopped onto my bed and put my hands over my face. Allie mumbled to herself as she threw different combinations of clothes together. I looked at the clock, and my stomach started to hurt. How could getting dressed for a football game be so incredibly painful?

“Try this,” Allie said as she tossed some clothes my way.

I quickly pulled on some black leggings and then a miniskirt. Next came a gray tank, followed by a silver sweater and a black blazer. A pair of old-school black high-top sneakers finished the outfit. I looked in the mirror and smiled. I looked very casual and comfy but very stylish, too. Allie was amazing—the outfit worked like a lucky charm. Just in time, too.

“Saaaammmm!” I heard Hailey call from the front door.

“Commminnngggg!” I yelled back. “Thanks, Allie!” I called behind me, but she had already started texting again.

I raced down the stairs (without tripping!) and stopped to say good-bye to my mom. She was in her home office, intently focused on some confusing jumble of budget numbers.

“You look great,” she said, making me wonder if I should go back upstairs and change back into my lucky shirt.

“Thanks,” I answered. “Go, Cherry Valley!”

“Go, Cherry Valley?” Hailey said from behind my back. “More like Go, Sam! Supercute outfit!”

“Yeah, it was Allie’s creation,” I confessed reluctantly.

“She got her fashion sense from me,” Mom said, not even kidding.

“Right,” Hailey and I said at exactly the same time.

We raced out of the house and jumped into the backseat of Hailey’s car. Hailey’s dad turned around and pretended to tip his hat.

“Good evening, mademoiselles,” he said in a fake accent. “Where shall I be driving you this fine afternoon?”

Hailey and I just looked at each other and started to giggle uncontrollably. Parents. Did they even have a clue how embarrassing they could be?

“Football field, Dad,” Hailey answered as soon as she had regained her composure. “Pronto.”

It took only seven minutes to get from my house to the football field, but in that short period of time, Hailey bombarded me with at least ten thousand questions. Did Michael say anything about hanging out with you after the game? Do you think the guys from the team will go to Scoops? Should we go too? What if they have a bad game? Do you know if that cute guy from...

I have read all the Dear Know It All books that are out and I anxiously await the new release. Excellently written. It is so good to read middle school books that are intelligent and show kids doing something other than just sports and cheerleading. Great series.
