Childhood revisited
By Gretchen @ My Life is a Notebook
Yes, this is a re-read. But I sat there and read the whole thing and I don't have anything else finished for today so HERE WE GO! Besides, I think it's quite interesting to compare reading this now to how it was when I read it as a child.

If you had asked me to rate this as a kid, I probably would have given it at least a solid four. While not one of my favorite series, I did decide to read through the entire series. It was in my library, so why not? I thought that Anne was a lot like me. Not the red hair, no, but rather her affinity for school and big words and imagination, but also her ability to do really stupid things.

This book has yet to lose any of that charm for me. Granted, I now find Anne slightly more annoying, in the way that I find the childhood me embarrassing and annoying. (You know what I mean. Nobody likes themselves as kids.) I also find Anne's tendency to get into "scrapes" just as amusing (and embarrassing), even if it leaves me shaking my head more than anything else.

The over-dramatization of Anne's moods certainly get to me now more than they did as a kid. She easily slides from cutesy to goodness sake shut up much faster than she used to. Her dealing with Gilbert, especially, makes me eye roll. He tried to hard to be nice, Anne! Her vanity is something I didn't notice much before, either, that now bothers me a lot. The novel's set up as Anne's lessons to be learned is also more apparent and heavy handed than I used to think.

I know that when I first read the book, I thought that making Anne grow up was a bad thing. I felt so sorry for her, when she had to leave all her dreams and imagination behind. I felt angry that she would so easily abandon her imagination and dreams. This is where my understanding of this book has grown by leaps and bounds.

I'm still sad about what happens to Anne in the end. Whether I found her mostly annoying or mostly not, the abrupt change in her attitude by the end creates a sense of wistful regret. I have to admit that Anne responded marvelously to everything that happens to her, but it still makes me sad. The first book in this series is a sad little reminder of what we lose when we grow up, when we understand the world is bigger than we think it is. It is easy to find your childhood self resembling Anne, but it is harder to admit that we all went through the same transformation that Anne does. We all had to leave a bit of our fanciful imaginations behind when we grew up. This realization makes the end of the book even more emotional than it was before.

All in all, this book is one that stood the test of time for me. It never was a book I was crazy over, but now it's developed a special place in my heart because of what it makes me feel and what it represents. I'm sort of curious about re-reading the whole series over again, just to see how I take the whole thing, now. Maybe when I have free time. If you would like to do so, this book is free on the Kindle. So go read!

Not this particular edition of an excellent book
By Milton P. Jones Jr.
Do not buy this edition. This is not the original as written by Lucy Maud Montgomery, but an altered version having terms current when the book came out replaced by non-meaningful words. Computer search engines make discovering the original meanings easy. Especially as a learning experience, an education and adventure, obtaining the original context is wonderful. For example, when Marilla is talking about obtaining an orphan boy this uses the expression "Home Boy" for a type she does not want. The original as written text is "Barnado Boy."
This is a man's name. He devised and carried out transfer of orphan and sometimes just poor children from the streets of England to English Speaking parts of the British Empire, especially Canada. At times parents would sign away the right to ship their children out of Britain. It is a real gauge to the extent to which the poor were poor at a time when Britain was spending great sums on weapons. If you are giving Anne of Green Gables in part or whole to a young person, do not treat it as empty entertainment. It is fun reading for adult and child. It is also a tool for learning. Anne is said by an artist to have "Titian Hair." The expression introduces Renaissance art, Titian in particular and invites investigation into art books or photos on the web.

Coming of Age in PEI
By Wib
Anne of Green Gables is a perfect escape to a near perfect, yet realistic place, a setting of beauty and innocence. I enjoyed the descriptions of that idyllic part of Prince Edward Island in all seasons, although readers who favor lots of action may think there is too much description. It's a picture of guileless and imaginative girlhood with its joys and troubles. The author masterfully portrays the subtle process of maturation and change, both in Anne and the characters nearest to her, as she grows to young adulthood. I think the reader will be challenged by the example of sacrificial love and warned concerning the losses which unoffered forgiveness can cause. This story leaves one with a longing for the rural simplicity, neighborliness, and homey virtues so hard to find nowadays. What would we find today, I wonder, in a visit to Green Gables, PEI?

From School Library Journal
Gr 4-6–Creech draws readers into a brilliantly simple, sentimental, and adult-centered moral scenario. On a rural American farm, an isolated couple finds a mute, mysterious, and artistic boy (who could be six, seven, or eight) abandoned on their porch. The longer he stays with them, the more his various talents become apparent and the more attached they become. They dread the day someone might come back to claim him. Readers will fall for the boy along with the taciturn couple and will become utterly absorbed in the what-would-you-do element of this cleanly written narrative. Others, however, may be distracted by the overly idyllic portrayal of farm and rural life, one-dimensional characters, and the aura of righteousness. It is, after all, an far-fetched premise, no matter how well written by such a renowned and skillful author. As an excellent vehicle for exploring moral quandaries, schools and libraries seeking books around which to discuss values will definitely want this title. However, Creech's fans should be aware that this is a departure from her previous fare, more like her The Unfinished Angel (HarperCollins, 2009) than her titles featuring strong female narrators.–Rhona Campbell, Georgetown Day School, Washington, DCα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
John and Marta, a young couple living on an out-of-the-way farm, find a young boy deposited on their porch. He does not speak, seems unafraid, and has only a crumpled note to indicate his identity: “Plees taik kair of Jacob. He is a good boy. Wil be bak wen we can.” The uncertain couple open their home and their hearts to this silent boy with a talent for music and art and love. It is a fragile happiness, lived moment to moment as Marta and John dare not make long-term plans. The brief chapters of this slender novel reinforce the idea of time stolen, as the days unfold in the shadow of the inevitable return of the boy’s family. What could be a melodrama is crafted into a richer and more gracious story in Creech’s masterful hands. The outcome of Jacob’s time with John and Marta is long lasting and solid and pays forward in a completely believable and satisfying manner. Grades 4-6. --Kara Dean

Beautiful
By Valerie A. Baute
A boy, about 6 or 7, is left on Marta and John's porch with a note (very poorly written) telling them that the boy's name is Jacob, and "we" will be back for him. The boy doesn't make noise, meaning he doesn't even speak. Marta and John think the parents might be back in a day or two. After that time, they start thinking maybe they should tell someone, but they don't. Eventually, the boy becomes part of their lives, just like their dog, Beagle, and the cow that was found tied to their fence. That happy time unfortunately must end when, as the note implied, someone comes back for him.

This is an extremely quick read, partly because it is short, and partly because it is amazing. So wonderfully written, I was quickly pulled into their lives within very few words. I have to say, I cried at the end, something I never do. Happy tears? Sad tears? You have to read to find out.

Kids grades 4-6, with some mature younger ones, will get a lot out of this charming story. There are obvious issues that are brought to light, such as right vs. wrong. The last few chapters show how one silent little boy can impact so many people's lives, including mine.

Great book!
By Wisconsin Buyer
I thought Sharon Creech had another Newberry winner as I read this book. I was pulled into the story from page 1. The emotions the book portrayed were excellent. This is a book children and adults will both love. Children will learn a lot about the way the world works from the main characters. The direction the story takes after the heartbreak of losing the boy, sets a good example for readers as to how they can help the unwanted children of the world as they mend their own broken hearts. The shelf of shoes was my favorite part. This is a book I will never forget and the author should be very proud of, it is marvelous. Thank you, Sharon, for this heartwarming look into these characters' lives. Terrific book!!!

Beautifully written, but for children?
By Heidi Grange
When Jacob shows up on John and Marta's porch, neither one knows what to think. They welcome him to their home, feed him and clothe him and try in general to do right by him. But the boy doesn't talk and so they have no idea where he came from or who he really is. Despite all the questions they quickly grow to love the boy who has quite the talent for art and music and who enjoys riding the cow and playing with the dog. Well aware that the boy's family may be back for him, John and Marta try to find out his origins. Just as they are getting used to the idea of having him around permanently, disaster strikes. But John and Marta are forever changed and it leads to them making a surprising decision.

Strengths: As is to be expected from Sharon Creech, the writing is beautiful and spare. She manages to convey strong emotions in a surprisingly few words. And she's a master of the show don't tell mantra. I had no trouble connecting to John and Marta and Jacob. The theme of the story is masterfully presented. I loved the book.

Weaknesses: Who on earth is this book aimed at? The length and spare prose suggest the book is aimed at young readers. However the story is told from the adult point of view, which I find a bit odd for a children's book. I am really not sure who I would recommend the book to other than adults. This is a book that I would want to try out with kids before buying for my library, just to get a reaction. Sigh, which is too bad since it is a wonderful book. The other issue I had with the book was time period. I really don't have any idea what time period this is supposed to take place in and that threw me off a little bit not knowing what the legalities would be for keeping an abandoned child.

Alice in Wonderland Graphic Novel
By Michelle @ In Libris Veritas
While Alice in Wonderland is not necessarily my favorite book, I find myself constantly in search of things Alice related. So every time I see a new adaptation or retelling I practically trip all over myself to get it, this was no exception.

The wonderful thing about Espinosa’s adaptation is that it’s fairly straightforward and takes the most memorable moments of the book and illustrates them. Of course if you are like me, you sort of enjoy all the twists and turns Alice is forced into so it was a bit too simple, but this is perfect for younger readers who have an interest in the whimsical classic.

I personally love the art style because of it’s similarity to that of manga art work, especially when Alice makes goofy faces. I ended up getting quite a laugh because of the Mad Hatter who looks eerily similar to a very short Jay Leno. The use of color helps to get the feel and mood across, so if you don’t know the story or the trouble she gets into then it sort of cues the emotions you would get in the full text book.

I’d certainly consider buying this for the middle grade aged readers who are hesitant to read the actual book. It doesn’t pull in all of the story so that they can easily hop into the text and get more than they experienced in this one…it’s also a fairly good companion piece for the book.

I received this book through Netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.

Yesterday and Today Chapter 1
Alone at last.

Upstairs in my room, I sat on the floor next to my bed. My hands shook a little as I stared down at the diary. My mother’s diary. My mother, who I had never met because she died giving birth to me. Now I held in my hands the diary she kept when she was my age. I was finally going to “meet” her . . . at least, sort of.

Earlier in the day, my best friend, Lily, and I had found the diary hidden in a secret closet in a room I usually refer to as “the blue bedroom” because of the blue walls in there. But now Lily had gone home. She’d known without me having to tell her that I wanted to be alone with my mom’s diary. I shared just about everything with Lily, but this was different.

I set it down gently in my lap. Brushed it lightly with my fingertips. Took a deep breath.

“Whatcha got there?” demanded a loud voice in my doorway.

I whirled around to see who it was. Could it be my mother?

It was a spirit. But not my mother’s.

Perhaps I should explain. I can see spirits. People who have died. I’ve been able to see them for as long as I can remember. The house I live in—the old Victorian house in Stellamar, New Jersey, which belonged to my great-grandmother, Lady Azura—is filled with spirits. My dad and I had moved here two summers ago. At first I didn’t know that Lady Azura was my great-grandmother. I’d just thought she was some kooky lady who told fortunes and read tea leaves. She was one of several secrets that had been kept from me for a long time. But I’d grown to love Lady Azura, and by the time I found out she was my great-grandmother, I was thrilled about it.

The spirit standing in my doorway wasn’t one I was familiar with. Not one of our regulars, as I had come to think of them. We had several that inhabited the house, and I knew them all. This was an older woman. She had a lot of makeup on, and her hair was all done up like she’d just stepped out of the salon.

I slipped the diary off my lap and nudged it under my bed. Then I stood up and walked over to her.

“Can I help you with something?” I asked, trying to be polite when in reality I was really annoyed by the interruption.

She wandered into my room, checking out my stuff. I bristled as her semitransparent hands touched my things.

“Don’t suppose so.” She shrugged, examining the photo of my mom on my bedside table. “I was just bored. Name’s Shirley. My son, Harry, and his wife are downstairs. They’re trying to get me to show up and tell them where I hid my will. I think that’s all they care about. And I’ll tell them. But in my own sweet time.” She laughed mischievously. “It’s much more interesting up here.”

That explained it, then. My great-grandmother was a fortune-teller. She could conjure spirits. People flocked here for her services.

Lady Azura must be holding a séance with clients downstairs. She must have summoned this spirit for them. I had to get rid of her. Politely, of course.

“Thanks so much for dropping in,” I said. “I am sure Harry and his wife can’t wait for you to appear to them, though.”

“Pah!” she said, waving her hand. “I doubt it. He’s a good boy, my Harry. Not sure what he was thinking marrying That Girl, but then, he didn’t exactly consult me before he popped the question.” Her voice got lower as she started fiddling with my camera. I think maybe she was getting a little emotional. “I did notice that his wife was wearing my butterfly pin. It’s an old thing, probably not worth very much anymore. I guess Harry gave it to her after I died. I heard her tell the fortune-teller that it belonged to me and how happy she was to have it. It sort of seemed like she meant it . . . but I think she must think it’s valuable and that’s why she likes it.”

“Actually, I don’t think that’s true. I can sense that Harry and his wife want you to show yourself. I think they really miss you.” To be honest, I wasn’t getting much of a vibe from downstairs at all, but I was still pretty sure that what I said was true. And she seemed pleased to hear it. I had learned from Lady Azura that spirits really aren’t all that different from the living. They hold grudges and make mistakes just like people do. Sometimes they just need to be set on the right track. “I sense that they’re waiting for you, Shirley, and that you must be very important to both of them or else they wouldn’t be here.”

She stood up, tugging at her dress and patting her hair. “You can sense all that? Do you have the gift, like the lady downstairs?”

“Well, I am her great-granddaughter,” I replied. Even I could hear the pride in my voice when I said it.

Shirley regarded me carefully for a moment or two, as if she was trying to make up her mind about me. “All right, then,” she said finally. “I shall go join them.” And she shimmered into nothingness.

I waited a minute more. I didn’t want to be interrupted again. But my room was quiet. I sat down and pulled the diary out from under my bed.

It was light blue, with a puffy kind of cover, sort of like a photo album. Slightly scuffed in places. The word DIARY, embossed in gold lettering, was the only thing on the cover. The corners were bent in a little, as though it had been dropped once or twice.

I took a few deep breaths and tried to calm my racing nerves. This was my first real glimpse into my mother’s life, her world. I’d been so eager to meet her, but her spirit hadn’t shown itself to me. I’d found out about the diary from another spirit, that of an old sailor named Duggan. Duggan was one of our regulars, and when he was here, he was usually in the blue bedroom. He’d told me about the diary. And then I’d dreamed about where it was hidden. Only Lily and I knew about the diary. I hadn’t told my dad or Lady Azura about it. Yet. For now, I wanted it to be my secret. Something I shared with my mother. Just the two of us.

With a trembling hand, I opened to the first page.

Girlish handwriting. Purple ink. Fat, loopy letters. The first entry was dated August 7, 1984.

She would have just turned twelve. The age I was when I first moved to Stellamar. She’d probably received the diary for her twelfth birthday.

A thought struck me. What if she only wrote in the diary for a few days or weeks and then got bored and forgot all about it? That would be really disappointing. But then again, I guessed a small glimpse into my mom’s life was better than nothing.

I fanned the pages. There was a lot of writing. She’d stuck with it. The entries came to a stop about two-thirds of the way through the book. Some days had short entries, just a sentence or two. Other days went several pages, the writing growing more urgent and slanted, as though she’d written while upset or excited. I resisted the urge to read these more interesting-looking entries. I’d start from the beginning and read it all in order. I turned back to the first page.

And then my phone vibrated, telling me I had a text.

In exasperation, I pulled my phone from my back pocket. I was going to shut it off, something I almost never ever did, but I didn’t want to be interrupted. Then I noticed who the text was from: Lily.

SORRY. I KNOW YOU’RE BUSY WITH YOU KNOW WHAT. BUT PLEASE CALL ME ASAP. IT’S MUCHO IMPORTANT!

I quickly texted back.

OK. WILL CALL SOON.

Then I turned off my phone.

I looked down at the diary. I couldn’t wait to meet her. My mom. Natalie, as she was known to everyone else.

I read the first line . . .

Dear Diary,

. . . and then everything got a little blurry and I was plunged into a vision.

Echo Reef loves sea horses so much, she wants one for a pet…no matter what!

Of all the creatures in the ocean, sea horses are Echo Reef’s favorite. They’re sweet and gentle and they glide through the water so gracefully. When Echo discovers that Rocky Ridge, one of her Trident Academy classmates, has his own pet sea horse, she wants one right away. Not everyone agrees sea horses should be pets, however—perhaps they are happiest when swimming freely. But Echo thinks that if Rocky can make a sea horse happy, she can too! Can’t she?

The Secret Sea Horse

The Worst Thing
ECHO REEF HELD HER BREATH. She crossed her fingers and her pink tail fins. She was hoping that Mrs. Karp wouldn’t say the worst thing ever. But she did.

“Class,” Mrs. Karp said, looking around the room of twenty third graders, “we will have a spelling test on Wednesday.”

Echo’s heart sank. But a merboy named Rocky Ridge cheered, “Yippee!” Everyone looked at Rocky in surprise. Usually he hated any kind of schoolwork.

Rocky smiled and then he laughed. “Just kidding.”

Mrs. Karp raised her green eyebrows at Rocky, but continued. “Since we only have two days before your test, I’ll give you a short list of ten words.”

Ten words! Echo thought it might as well have been a million. Echo was a good merstudent in most of the subjects at Trident Academy. She liked merology, storytelling, science, and astronomy. But spelling was difficult for her.

Mrs. Karp pointed to a list of words on a seaweed chart. “These ocean creatures are extremely interesting. It will be quite useful to know how to spell their names.” Echo looked at the list as Mrs. Karp called on various students to read the words aloud.

“Pipefish,” Shelly Siren said.

“Sea dragon,” Kiki Coral read.

Then Pearl Swamp read, “Sea horse.” Echo loved sea horses. She couldn’t help daydreaming about them. They were so cute and graceful. Sometimes she visited the Conservatory for the Preservation of Sea Horses and Swordfish, where her mother worked. Housed in the fabulous Trident Plaza Hotel, the conservatory had the largest display of sea horses known to merfolk. It was also a hospital for sick or hurt sea horses. Echo liked sea horses even more than she liked humans—and she adored everything about humans.

“Echo,” Mrs. Karp said, “please read the next word.”

Echo gulped. She’d been so busy thinking about sea horses, she wasn’t sure which word were they on. She guessed and read, “Stonefish.”

Mrs. Karp tapped her white tail on her marble desk and shook her head. “Echo, you need to pay closer attention. Pearl, please read the next word.”

Pearl looked at Echo and stuck her nose up in the water before reading, “Trumpet fish.”

Echo sighed. How was she ever going to learn ten new spelling words before Wednesday? She wished she could ride away on a sea horse and never take another spelling test ever again.

Thought Provoking!
By Jack Tan
This is a fast paced story in the Mermaid Tales series.
Debbie Dadey demonstrated her writing tact by bring up a controversial topic on whether animals should be kept as a pet in an interesting and easy to follow way for the children. She did not provide an answer through Mrs. Karp the teacher but provided an authoritative stand on the topic through Dr. Reef who ran the Conservatory for the Preservation of Sea Horses and Swordfish. When Mrs. Karp queried the third graders, the class was equally divided, just as it is in many contestable topics in todays world like euthanasia, providing social safety net, as well as keeping animals as pet.
Personally I kept two dogs but have come to recognise that freedom is important to them and have inculcate in my daughter that animals might be a suitable pet if they are kept as outdoor pet that is if you have a large open yard, and they are not suitable for city life. We should not build our possessiveness of what we like; just as Echo in the book and deprive these animals of their right habitat. I vowed that I these would be my last dogs if I continued to live in the city.

A Green Christmas! Chapter 1 Holiday Plans
Zack Nelson stretched out on his bed with his dog, Luna, beside him. He clutched his hyperphone and punched in the z-mail address for his cousin Louis on Earth. Christmas was coming, and Zack was already on his school break.

Zack was born on Earth. He had spent the first eight years of his life living in Dubbsville, Texas. But Zack now lived on the planet Nebulon.

Zack and his family had moved to Nebulon several months ago. At first Zack missed Earth very much and he wished he could go back and live there again. But Zack had grown to really like his life on Nebulon, even though he still missed his friends and family on Earth.

As Zack’s hyperphone blazed to life, his cousin Louis’s face appeared on the screen.

“Begin video chat,” said a computer voice from the device.

“Hey, Zack! How’s life on Nebulon?” asked Louis.

“Pretty good,” replied Zack, “but I can’t wait to get back to Earth for Christmas!”

This would be Zack’s first Christmas since his family moved to Nebulon. But Zack, his mom and dad, and his twin sisters, Charlotte and Cathy, were planning on traveling back to Earth. Zack loved spending Christmas with his relatives. Louis and his family lived in Vermont, and Zack always looked forward to sledding and building snowmen with his cousins.

“We already have about eight inches of snow here,” said Louis, “and they are expecting more by Christmas!”

“Yippee wah-wah!” Zack shouted.

“Yippee what?” asked Louis.

“Oh, that’s just something we say here on Nebulon when we’re really happy about something,” Zack explained, “and I’m SO excited about playing in all that snow with you!”

“Me too!” said Louis. “Does it ever snow on Nebulon?”

“No,” said Zack. “It gets cold, but not cold enough to snow. That’s why I’m so glad I’m coming to Earth! It just wouldn’t feel like Christmas without snow.”

“And without you!” Louis added.

“Yeah!” Zack cried.

“Do they have Christmas on Nebulon?” Louis asked.

“Yeah,” said Zack, “but from what I’ve seen so far, it’s really different. The Christmas trees look weird. So do the ornaments. The trees look like long tubes of light. The ornaments are all square-looking and metal. I guess they’re okay, but I prefer the ones that we have on Earth.”

Just then Louis held his hyperphone up to his bedroom window. “Look!” he said.

Zack saw what was happening outside: White snow was falling gently on the Vermont mountains.

“Wow!” said Zack. “It’s beautiful. This is going to be the best Christmas ever!”

Ruff! Ruff! Luna barked excitedly.

Remember The Jetsons?
By Kindle Customer
This is a cute, easy read about a boy whose family has moved from earth to the planet Nebulon. The main character, Zack, is looking forward to returning to earth for Christmas. He misses real Christmas trees, snow, etc. This book reminds me of the old cartoon The Jetsons. I liked the part about his trip to the mall and all of the high-tech there. When you get to the mall, an orb approaches you and asks you where you want to go. Once you tell it, your name appears in lights on the floor. You simply follow your name until you reach your destination. The orb also keeps track of where the whole family is :)
Kids who like this futuristic stuff, including a jet-powered Santa sleigh, will enjoy this book. I recommend it for 2nd through 4th grade.

Has spoilers but still a great guide
By Jessica Porter
This one showed up and this is what happened. It was sitting on my desk and my 9 year old daughter came in saw it and away the book went. I didn't see it again for three days! I eventually had to snag it back so I could do this review while she was sleeping. So this book has so much going for it! It is deffintly the book for the ultimate fan! From the dust jacket that turns into a full size poster listing all of the books in reading order. To the full page colored photos though-out the book. This makes for a great read for any fan of this series. The only issue that I think some people might have is that The Early Settlers section contains spoilers for the Dawn of the Clans even through those books are not yet released. So that is deffintly something to keep an eye on if you hate spoilers. The only thing that I think will make some people unhappy is that they don't list all of the cats from the series. There were around 13 cats that my daughter couldn't find that she wanted to know more about. She also told me that there are a few inconstancies with story lines in the book vs. the books themselves. Just little things like ShadowClan is spelled Shadow Clan and what and who told who what lol. All in all this is a great book for the ultimate fan! I know it will be with my daughter as she has taken it while I write this up. So long book!

Actio packed (Full of spoilers)
By W.Westphal
I have read all the warrior books except a couple of comics and the like,so yeah,I'm a big warrior fan. But when I saw this,I didn't really expect it would be that great,I expected a bunch of battles slashed together.
I certainly was wrong. This book is narrated by several characters in the books, from Onestar to Tigerclaw. It starts as Onestar welcomes you to his camp and tells you he will show you the clans battle lore. For some reason he takes you first to the other clans but oh well.
One thing I liked about this book is that like the other field guides, this one has a story where you are a character being shown around. But this one gets better as at one point Tigerclaw interrupts and shows you the old forest.
This book does talk about many battles, most of them are brand new.
It's also very updated, showing Mistystar as the new leader.
A must have for every Warrior fan.

Awesome Illustrations!
By Gwen O' Connell
This book begins with three StarClan kits accidentally wandering into Rock's caves. He offers to tell them about some of the most important cats in the recent history of the Clans. The rest of the book is divided into sections for ThunderClan, RiverClan, WindClan, ShadowClan, and cats outside the Clans.I enjoyed the narrative style;I felt like I was one of the kits;and I loved the illustrations!!They were really cool! Although people who know all about the series will know the info about the cats already, the pictures make the buy worth it(in my opinion). And if you have a friend who hasn't read the books but wants to try them out,get them this book. It's a great introduction to the characters.

Nothin' to Lose: The Making of KISS (1972-1975) chronicles, for the first time, the crucial formative years of the legendary rock band KISS, culminating with the groundbreaking success of their classic 1975 album Alive! and the smash single "Rock and Roll All Nite," a song that nearly four decades later remains one of rock's most enduring anthems. Drawing on more than two hundred interviews, the book offers a captivating and intimate fly-on-the-wall account of their launch, charting the struggles and ultimate victories that led them to the threshold of superstardom.

Constructed as an oral history, the book includes original interviews with Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss, as well as with producers; engineers; management; record company personnel; roadies; club owners; booking agents; concert promoters; costume, stage, and art designers; rock photographers; publicists; and key music journalists.

Many of KISS's musical contemporaries from the time, most of whom shared concert bills with the band on their early tours, also lend their perspective via new interviews; these include Bob Seger, Alice Cooper, and Ted Nugent, as well as members of Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Rush, Slade, Blue Öyster Cult, Mott the Hoople, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Styx, Raspberries, The James Gang, The New York Dolls, Iggy & the Stooges, The Ramones, Suzi Quatro, Argent, and Uriah Heep, among others.

The result is an indelible and irresistible portrait of a band on the rise and of the music scene they changed forever.

A KISS book with minimal band member bashing
By T. Menard
I really dislike books about KISS.

I've read Gene's, Peter's, and Ace's, and felt that the things which interested me were glossed over. Meanwhile, band drama was highlighted with these books.

Nothin' To Lose takes a different take on the early formation of the band. Instead of a subjective commentary on band members and their squabbles, the book focuses on factual events which lead to KISS's rise to fame.

PROS:
-Excerpts from many folks who worked in and around the band are prominently featured in this book. In short, it isn't just the words of Paul & Gene.

-The book focuses on the bands formative years, until just after the release of "Alive!".

-It gives the reader better insight into the band's logistics, and the amount of support employed to get this band off the ground.

-It is a fun read for most readers, and features info that would surprise even the most die hard KISS fan.

-The early photos of the band without makeup were pretty cool.

CONS:
-The book probably would've been better off without any band member commentary. I've pretty much heard all they've had to say. The only thing revealed by the band that I didn't know, was that they used to do AMC car company commercial recordings.

-I was bummed when it ended.

-I wish they went into more detail on the costumes and instruments. Then again, the general reader may find that boring.

-I wish it was an unauthorized book, because I felt that some observations were overly flattering of KISS.

This is the first KISS book I've read that I really enjoyed. I'd highly suggest it.

The Ultimate Snapshot of the Era
By TheDeskChicken
Ken has been known for years as an authority on KISS and rock n' roll in general but with this book he took things to another level. The depth of the information from all aspects of the bands formative years is incredible. Ken puts it all together in a great timeline. Amazing insight into how the band came to be the stage presence they are today. The old crew, managers, assistants, friends etc. make for a view from the inside that is not solely that of the band. A very unigue view and well put together. The photos, especially those from Eddie Solan's collection are incredible. KISS in studio as starving kids chasing the dream. There are dozens of KISS books but this sits right up at the top. A recommended read for any KISS or music fan. Kudos to Ken!

Nothin To Lose? Except More Money To Gene
By JOHNLOCKE
Before I start I will state that I am a lifelong die hard 70's KISS fan that has spent thousands of dollars on them so I have earned the right to complain...
Honestly ; this book is Not a book with a story line...
It's just a bunch of quotes and comments from Kiss members and roadies, techs, record execs, and so on.
What pissed me off the most is that the reader has No idea when the quotes are from, they could be from 1974 or 2013.
There are a few cool photos but overall I was kind of disappointed..
I was expecting a behind the scenes type of story with maybe a few quotes from people who were there..
But what I got was JUST quotes ..Most of which I'd heard before
