About the Author

Charlie Papazian is the founder of the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) and the Association of Brewers and the current president of the Brewers Association. The creator of the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup, he is the founding publisher of the magazines Zymurgy (for homebrewers) and The New Brewer (for professional craftbrewers). He lives in Boulder, Colorado, with his wife, Sandra, and daughter, Carla, where he still avidly homebrews lagers, ales, and honey meads.

My husband was advised to get this book by other home brewers both in classes and online. He has made some very respectable beer. Although the price of the book is very reasonable it created the need for quite an investment of other brew making equipment and products. Well whatever keeps him off the streets.

Great basic to intermediate resource!

When I started brewing I borrowed the 3rd edition from a friend to learn the ropes. I have now been brewing for 3 years and wanted to get this new edition mostly as a reference source. Its a great book with lots of basic info to get you up and brewing as well as some more advanced topics to help you fine tune and improve your beer. There are a few new tweaks in this edition, but I mostly use it to quickly review beer styles/ingredients/technical stuff.

This is the 4th time I have purchased this book. First was the 1st edition, then 3 copies of the second edition. I kept handing out copies for people to read and they never came back. Excellent book for the beginning home brewer and even a seasoned brewer. There is a lot of very well presented information garnished with levity and a lot of "Don't worry, have a home brew" philosophy.

With her help, Kitto discovers that a cave on the island holds the large treasure that his uncle had been planning to recover when his ship was attacked by pirates under the command of the vengeful Captain John Morris. When another group of pirates arrives, the ragtag group decides to join forces to outwit Morris, escape the island, and try to find Kitto's younger brother and uncle. This exciting tale has all of the essential elements of a grand adventure-a flamboyant, hook-handed pirate; bloody battles; hidden treasure; a vicious crocodile; and a peg-legged boy-and the inclusion of escaped slaves and Native Americans makes for a unique and well-rounded story. It doesn’t help that he and four others are stranded on an island where the landscape is rough. When a pirate crew lands on the island as well, things get heated, but Kitto finds a solution in the form of a common enemy and ties to the past that are buried deeper than buried treasure. With detailed prose, elementary school teacher Eames relays his characters’ fast-paced adventures with just the right blend of history and excitement. His greatest talent lies in delivering action sequences in a way that maintains momentum and delivers information, all with an eye toward historical accuracy.

Brian Eames has taught for fifteen years at the Paideia School, a K–12 independent school in Atlanta. He read his first novel, The Dagger Quick, out loud to his class as he wrote it. EXCELLENT READ!!

Homeland: Carrie's Run is a prequel to the first season of Homeland. It tells a lot about her life, her mental illness, and her work in the Middle East and how she wound up working with the CIA. Since I am a big fan of the series, I thought the book was great, since it gives a lot of background info on Carrie.
I am hoping the writer does the same type book on the other major characters in the series.
I highly recommend this book if you're into Homeland!

I sincerely hope that Mr. Kaplan will continue writing Homeland books. This one is so good that you should not start reading it Mo-Fri as you will not want to do anything else, just read and wonder what will happen on next page.
It is breathtaking, vivid description of the Iraq war, I had my eyes wet when reading about those terrible atrocities.
This book would be great on screen, looking forward to see it sometimes.

Jump Shot 1 A NEW DOOR OPENS
“Thanks, man.” Ronde Barber exchanged an elaborate handshake with one of his many fans at Hidden Valley Junior High School.

“Yeah, dude, thanks a lot,” said Ronde’s identical twin, Tiki, slapping the boy on the back.

“No, thank you guys. For everything.”

Ronde didn’t even know the kid’s name. He didn’t know him, and he was pretty sure Tiki didn’t either.

It happened a lot like that. These days, in the second term of their last year at Hidden Valley Junior High, the Barber twins were “Big Men on Campus”—stars of the school’s history-making football team. The Eagles had been State Champions two years running and, this past season, owners of a perfect record.

Everyone knew their names all right, even at a big school like Hidden Valley. But there were plenty of kids whose names Tiki and Ronde didn’t know, or had forgotten.

It wasn’t that they were stuck up about their superhero status. Not at all. But it was hard to remember everyone’s name who knew yours, when yours had been plastered all over the school paper, the local TV news, the Roanoke Reporter, and even newspapers as far away as Richmond.

Remembering names wasn’t a big problem by any means. It was great being popular. The only real problem was, their football career at Hidden Valley was over. Ever since the final celebrations had ended, Ronde’s and Tiki’s lives had become more and more . . . well, boring. Oh, school was okay, and it was fun catching up on their favorite TV shows—but it was winter, and it was cold, and there was nothing really important going on in their lives anymore!

No practices to get their blood pumping. No video strategy sessions with the team to get their minds racing. No big games to look forward to every week.

It was only the end of January, but to Ronde, it felt like winter had been dragging on for months! And here they were, on a Thursday afternoon that had already turned dark by four o’clock, waiting to get into the gym so they could sit in the bleachers, crammed in with all their friends and those other kids whose names they didn’t even know or couldn’t remember . . . just to watch a basketball game!

Watching was not the same as playing, Ronde thought sadly. And basketball, while it was fun, was only the Barbers’ second-favorite sport. Besides, while Hidden Valley Junior High had always been a powerhouse in football, it had never done well in basketball. The team hadn’t won a league championship in forty years, and for five straight seasons, they’d fallen short of making the play-offs.

This year’s team was better than most, but their record was only about .500 at this point, midway through the season. And the only reason it wasn’t worse was the team’s all-star point guard, Sean Morton.

Sean was only in eighth grade, but he was already a league all-star, and was being talked about for the All-Virginia team. Sean—or “Sugar,” as everyone called him for his sweet jump shot—was averaging twenty points a game, and his brilliant ball-handling was reason enough to come see an Eagles game.

So the bleachers were packed. And most of them were here not so much to root for the team, as to see “Sugar” put up some serious numbers.

“I can’t believe this is the first game we’ve been to this year,” Tiki said as they climbed up into the bleachers and found two seats together, way back near the top row.

“I know,” Ronde said, sitting down. “It’s weird being in the stands, watching the game.”

“Tell me about it.” Tiki reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a bag of peanuts. “Want some?”

Ronde cupped his palm and caught the peanuts just as the game began. Sugar, wearing number 1 on the back of his uniform, with EAGLES on the front in capital letters, caught the tip-off and dribbled upcourt. His ball-handling was impressive—fancy moves, a through-the-knees fake, then a no-look pass to the shooting guard, Brian Reynolds. Reynolds, with a clear look at the basket, put up a shot—and missed.

Sugar groaned out loud, shook his head, and made a face before retreating back upcourt.

Reynolds was slow getting back, and the player he was supposed to be guarding sank an easy running layup to start the scoring.

“Come on!” Sugar shouted, gesturing for Reynolds to kick it into gear.

Ronde looked at Tiki, who returned his gaze. Like many sets of identical twins, they often found that they were thinking the same thing at the same time. Right now was one of those times. Ronde knew Tiki was also thinking about Cody Hansen, their quarterback on the Eagles when they were in eighth grade.

Cody used to yell at his teammates like that. And it never worked, either.

Sure enough, these basketball Eagles soon found themselves trailing badly. And the more they fell behind, the more Sugar Morton held on to his dribble, taking most of the shots himself, and not including his teammates much. The rest of the Eagles seemed to be moving a step slower than Sugar. Slower than their opponents, the Colts of Martinsville Junior High, as well.

By halftime, Sugar had scored twenty-two points, but the rest of the Eagles had managed a paltry five. That made the score 36–27, Patriots. Thirty-six was a lot of points for one half, showing that the Eagles were barely bothering to play defense.

“Sure glad we’re not in that locker room,” Tiki said as they waited for the second half to start.

“Yeah. We were lucky. At least we were always in the hunt for a play-off spot,” Ronde said.

“These guys’ll never make it, the way they’re going. They’ll be lucky to finish over .500.”

“Yeah, and they should be much better, with a guy like Sugar chuckin’ it up there like that.”

“Oh, well,” Tiki said, shrugging. “Not much we can do about it from up here.”

The second half began with Sugar on the bench, steaming about something. Probably the way his teammates are playing, thought Ronde.

When Sugar finally got back in the game, the Eagles were trailing by fifteen points. He proceeded to put on a one-man show, sinking shot after shot, even though the Colts were constantly double-teaming him.

“He’s got an open man!” Tiki shouted more than once. But Sugar never seemed to want to let go of the ball unless he was launching it toward the basket.

In the end, he made the score fairly close—67–63—but the Eagles still wound up on the short end of the stick.

Tiki and Ronde left the gym along with the rest of the crowd. They crossed the parking lot and kept walking, headed for the public bus stop a block farther down James Street. It wasn’t the time of year to be riding bikes—too cold for that—and there were no school buses this late in the day.

Riding home, the brothers didn’t say much at first. Each was absorbed in his own private thoughts. Finally, Tiki muttered, “Man, this really rots, you know?”

Ronde knew what he meant. “Not being part of the team anymore? Yeah. I know.”

“Life’s just not the same. It’s like something’s missing.”

“Well, we’ve still got classes,” Ronde said. “And you’re gonna be writing your advice column for the school newspaper.”

“Ugh, don’t remind me,” Tiki said, making a face. “I wish I’d never promised Laura I’d do that after the season ended.” Laura Sommer was the editor and publisher of the Hidden Valley Gazette, which she had turned from a one-page handout to a real, twice-monthly newspaper that the whole school looked forward to reading.

“Point is, you promised her you’d do it,” Ronde said. “And while you’re at it, who knows, you might wind up helping somebody out there.”

“Yeah, right,” Tiki said, dismissing the thought.

But Ronde could tell he’d made his point. “Besides, there’s also the job at Mr. Landzberg’s warehouse,” he said. “He offered us twenty hours a week, and said we could split the job between us if we wanted. That could end up being a lot of money.”

Justin Landzberg had been a teammate of theirs on the Eagles, and his dad owned a local department store with its own warehouse. “They always need stockboys,” Justin told them when they informed him that they were fourteen now, and able to get working papers.

Tiki and Ronde’s mom worked two jobs. Times were tough in Roanoke, and it was hard for a single mom to make enough money to bring the boys up and pay all the bills. The twins had always wanted to help by contributing to the family budget, but until now, they’d been too young.

“I guess you’re right,” Tiki said, still thinking about their days of glory on the football field. “I mean, all things come to an end, right? Even the best things.”

“It was the best, wasn’t it?” Ronde remembered with a smile. “They can never take those championships away from us.”

“Or that perfect season.”

“Or all those great plays . . .”

“All the comebacks . . .”

They both sighed, and fell silent again.

“I’m never gonna forget it,” Tiki finally said. “Even if we make it to the NFL.”

Ronde gave him a playful shove. “What do you mean, ‘if’?”

“Still,” Tiki said as their stop approached. “I wish we had something fun to do between now and next fall.”

“You never know,” Ronde said as they got off the bus. “Something might turn up tomorrow morning.”

Little did he know how right he was.

“Yo! Ronde!”

Ronde turned from his locker to see Mr. Jackson coming toward him. Mr. Jackson was his science teacher, and immediately Ronde thought he must have messed up on the latest quiz or homework assignment. But the smile on Mr. Jackson’s face told a different story.

“What’d I do?” Ronde blurted out.

“Nothing! What are you worried about?” Mr. Jackson said with a chuckle. “Last I looked, you were running an A minus.”

Ronde beamed. He was good at science, and proud of it too.

Mr. Jackson’s smile faded. “Look, Ronde, you got a minute? I need to talk to you about something. Or you could come to my office fourth period. You have lunch fourth period, right?”

“We can talk now,” Ronde said. “I’ve got study hall.”

“Good, good,” said Mr. Jackson. “Let’s sit on that bench over there in the lobby. It’ll quiet down soon as passing’s over.”

Two minutes later, the halls had emptied, and they could hear themselves think. “Here’s the thing,” Mr. Jackson began. “It’s about the team, basically. I’ve got a problem I’m hoping you or your brother can help me with.”

In his panic about his science grades, Ronde had forgotten that in addition to being his science teacher, Mr. Jackson was also Hidden Valley’s basketball coach.

“The team is in trouble,” Mr. Jackson said. “And now I come to find out that Brian Reynolds is transferring out; going to military school, starting Monday.”

“Whoa. That’s too bad,” Ronde said. Brian was the team’s starting shooting guard. He scored more points than anyone on the squad except Sugar. “But—”

“But how can you help? That’s what I was about to ask you!” Mr. Jackson’s smile returned. “I can move Rory Mathis up to starter. But now I’ve got an opening on my bench, with no obvious candidates to fill it. So I’m asking myself, ‘Who at this school might be good at basketball, but didn’t try out for the team, for whatever reason. . . .’ ”

In the silence, Ronde realized what Mr. Jackson was offering. “You mean us?”

Mr. Jackson put both hands out, palms up. “I didn’t call you aside just to chat.”

Ronde swallowed hard. His heart was suddenly racing with excitement, but he tried not to show just how eager he was.

“You know, I’m sure we’d be interested, Mr. J. We’re always playing one-on-one in the driveway, you know, and we can handle the ball pretty well. Although neither of us is a great shooter,” he warned, not wanting the coach to get too hopeful. After all, Mr. Jackson was asking them to fill in for a shooting guard, wasn’t he?

“Well, I understand why you both never came out for tryouts,” Jackson said. “I know Coach Wheeler didn’t want either of you getting hurt doing any other sports.”

Ronde nodded. It was true. Football had always been the most important thing to him and Tiki. It was true that they often played hoops in their driveway, although not “always,” as he’d told Mr. Jackson. They’d played some pick-up baseball too, in summer, and run races against each other for fun, just like any two athletic brothers on planet Earth.

But joining the basketball team was another step up, for sure. Why shouldn’t they try their hand at other sports, now that they didn’t have to worry about football until high school? In fact, Ronde made a mental note, right then and there, to try out for the baseball team in early March.

“Don’t misunderstand me,” Mr. Jackson said, holding up a hand. “I’ve only got one spot on the roster. I’ll leave it up to you and Tiki which of you wants to give it a try.”

Ronde froze, with his jaw wide open. He’d been about to say something else, but now, for the life of him, he couldn’t remember what it was.

Only one of them was going to be on the basketball team?

Absolutely Fantastic, Worth Every Penny!

Call the Shots is fun, full of great characters, and is just a great light hearted read. Calame has done a fantastic job maintaining the perfect balance of awkward teenager and relatable/likable character. Of course readers of the previous two books in the series, Swim the Fly and Beat the Band, will rejoice in seeing their favorite rag-tag group of teens back again in this seemingly final book in the trilogy.

Of course, while I recommend to read the books in the order they were released, Calame has created a series where if necessary each book could stand on its own, perfect for readers to jump in at any moment.

Of course, besides fun characters, readers will crack up with Coop's insane plans, which in past books has included everything from going to a nude beach (and seeing things they all wish they could forget), joining battle of the bands when none of them know how to play an instrument, and now in Call the Shots, shooting a horror movie on a $1000 budget to win at terror fest, a horror film festival in New York.

Really this book is fantastic for anyone looking for a light engaging read, where you'll relate to the characters, have fun following in their insane plans, and be glued until the last page. All in all a great read that I'd easily recommend.

This book is and isn't like Moby Dick

How this book is like Moby Dick: the word dick, or synonyms, are used frequently. The protagonist suffers. It's an adventure story. Destined to become a classic.

How this book is not like Moby Dick: it's more entertaining, funnier, and occasionally crude and lewd -which makes it a much better read for a teenage boy. Or an adult man, with the brain of the teenage boy - which apparently is most of them.

If you are a fundamentalist, you will be offended, and this book is not for you. But for those with an open mind, you will find that it's well-written, full of heart and it does a wonderful job of depicting both the agony and ecstasy of being a teenager. It's essentially a book about friendship, longing, and growing up. I laughed out loud, and also found it very moving at times.

I will definitely buy and read the first two books in this series.

Sean's turn to narrate, and it doesn't disappoint. Hilarious.

After Swim the Fly and Beat the Band, I figured I'd be in for a treat when it was Sean's turn to narrate - and Call the Shots didn't disappoint. There are the elements that made the first two great: over-the-top, funny-as-sh** situations (many involving bathroom humor, which I'm a sucker for), an nearly impossible goal, the ceaseless pursuit of girls, and the endless new vocabulary for bodily functions/body parts/etc. But most of all I couldn't wait to see the friends do what great friends do best: have each others' backs, make each other laugh, and really love each other. I nearly cried at the end of this one, saying goodbye to these three goofballs.

This is a remarkably useful book. While we are taught how to read and to speak, almost no one learns how to listen properly. I can tell if you are a poor writer or poor speaker but neither you or I can tell if you are a great listener. Thich Nhat Hanh has found a way to help readers become outstanding communicators by learning how to be a better listener. Reading this book and following the suggestions that are within will transform the reader into an outstanding listener. When you learn to be this kind of listener all day long, then you will develop enduring, loving relationships with the most important people in your life. This will make you one of the most important and influential persons in your sphere of connections with family, coworkers, and community. This book is worth taking time to study it closely and master the Art of Communications.

Authentic, Mindful Connections

If you are looking for ways to improve your communication skills, learn from Thich Nhat Hanh how to listen! While its commonly taught how to read and write, most of us are deficient in quieting our voice and mind to truly heart others. I was blown away by the simplicity and beauty of this book. Like the Extraordinary Zen Masters, Rengetsu: Life and Poetry of Lotus Moon included, this book has taught me ways to be more mindful in my communications and how this will bring me closer to my authentic self and those that I love.

"Hot guy at two o'clock," Pansy McAdams said, craning her head around the form mannequin and peering out the window.

Eleanor Theriot rolled her eyes and swiped her dust cloth over the spindles of the rocker she knelt beside. "You think half of New Orleans is hot."

"No, I'm just optimistic."

"Or need a good optometrist."

Pansy didn't turn her head from whoever had drawn her attention. "I have perfect vision, thank you very much, and this one is worth the drool I'll have to wipe off the glass."

Eleanor pushed past Pansy, who'd plastered her nose to the window of the Queen's Box. Eleanor could only imagine the picture her friend and employee presented to passersby. Pig nose.

But no actual drool.

"Let me be the judge," Eleanor said, playing along. Pansy had spent the past month reminding Eleanor of her resolution to get back into the dating game. When Eleanor had examined her life, as everyone is wont to do on New Year's Day, she'd discovered her home felt empty, and most of her lingerie had been purchased from a wholesale club. Time to start dating again, to start claiming a new life for herself outside widowhood and motherhood. Up until now, Eleanor had been good at ignoring the male sex—hot or otherwise—but today, Eleanor felt game. Maybe it was the phone call earlier from her mom, who had cut out an article about healthy living for the premenopausal woman.

Not that Eleanor was going through menopause.

Yet.

So an innocent ogle sounded…harmless.

Across the street, in front of the place where tradesmen had been streaming in and out like worker bees, was a pickup truck. Leaning against the side of that truck was someone who made her swallow. Hard.

Pansy soooo didn't need glasses.

The man resembled an Aztec prince. Like his honeyed skin should be twined in gold and turquoise, bedecked in a feathered headdress. And a loincloth. He'd be breathtaking in a loincloth.

"Told ya," Pansy said, shouldering Eleanor out of the way. "He could eat crackers, chips and freakin' beignets in my bed any day of the week."

"Not sure your husband would appreciate an extra bed-mate."

"Eddie lets the dog sleep with us. What's one more hairy beast?" Pansy straightened the ceremonial Mayan mask that sat next to the silver candelabra in the window display before sliding off the edge of the window stage, her long body loose and loping. Pansy was over six feet tall, flat-footed and thin to the point of painful, but she had a sharp sense of humor and a heart that was big, fat and full of good cheer. Like Santa Claus in Olive Oyl's body.

Eleanor glanced again at the man standing beside the pickup, peering at his phone. He wore well-worn jeans and a long-sleeved T-shirt. His face had a sort of sexy Brad Pitt thing going on with sensuous lips, but his jaw was hard, nose straight, brows dark and drawn to a V as he tapped on the phone. His skin was a creamy cafe au lait and his hair jetblack, clipped close to his head. Broad shoulders and narrow hips finished off the visual treat. A damn chocolate cupcake from Butterfield's Bakery wasn't as tempting as this man. "Hey," Pansy whispered over Eleanor's shoulder, making her jump. "You should go get him and see how you like sleeping on cracker crumbs."

"I already know I don't like sleeping on cracker crumbs."

"With the right guy, you'll never feel 'em. Trust me."

Running a hand over a well-crafted Federal chest of drawers, Eleanor turned to Pansy and wiggled her fingers. "Dust."

"Chicken."

Eleanor wasn't going outside to talk to a guy leaning against a work truck. She wasn't that kind of girl. Never had been…even if she was determined to get out there…wherever "there" was. "No way."

"Candy ass."

"Calling me names won't work. Get the lemon oil and let's make sure our pieces up front look pretty. Tourists will be pouring in with Mardi Gras weekend coming up. I could use some sales."

Pansy propped her fists on angular hips and narrowed her piercing blue eyes. "Come on, El. What will it hurt to do a little flirting? You'll probably never see him again and you need to get your feet wet. Beyond time, sugar."

Yeah, it was way beyond time. That's what her daughter, Blakely, had yelled at her over a month ago—to get her own life. But Eleanor wasn't going outside and getting her feet wet with some random house painter. Even if she'd never see him again. Even if it was harmless, silly and somewhat daring. "I'm moving on, Pansy. I am. I even checked out that eHarmony site last night, but I'm not the kind of girl who goes up to a random guy and says, uh, I wouldn't even know what to say."

"Pretend you're locked out and need a screwdriver or something to jimmy the lock. I'll hide in the back."

"Jimmy the lock? Who are you? Nancy Drew?"

Pansy faked an elaborate laugh. "You're so funny. Share it with the sex god across the street. Unless you're…chicken?"

Eleanor looked around the antiques store that had been her salvation, first after the hurricane and then after the sex scandal, and felt the security she always did when she really thought about who she was. Did she want to be another relic of the past like the beautiful pieces in her store? Hmm. Pansy was right. Blakely was right. She needed to step out and get a life. "Okay. Fine."

Pansy froze. "Really?"

"Yeah, what'll it hurt? Not like I'll see him again."

Pansy pulled Eleanor to her, snatching the ponytail holder from Eleanor's hair. "Ow!"

"Hold still," Pansy said, tugging strands of Eleanor's hair around her face and studying it critically.

Eleanor batted her hands away. "Jeez, Pans."

"Let me grab the coral-rose lip gloss I bought at Sephora. It will look nice with those new red highlights you just put in."

"I'm—"

"Shh," Pansy said, pressing a finger against Eleanor's lips. "He's a little out of your league so we need to prepare you for—"

"Please." Eleanor pushed past her friend and tucked her shirt into her new gold Lilly Pulitzer belt. "He'll be gone before you could perform all that magic. Besides, he's not out of my league. Forget the lip gloss."

"Whoa, that's my sassy girl," Pansy called, scurrying to the back of the store, thin arms and knobby knees moving so fast she resembled a clumsy puppy. She sank behind the counter, leaving only her eyes visible. "I'll hide back here so he buys the story."

"This is nuts," Eleanor proclaimed.

Pansy's hand emerged over the register, shooing her toward the door. "Just go."

Taking a deep breath, Eleanor pushed the glass door, ignoring the dinging of the sleigh bells affixed to the knob, and stepped onto Magazine Street, which had started waking up for the day. She shut the door behind her, slapped a hand to her forehead and patted her pockets.

Damn, she was a good actress.

She started toward hunky painter dude, looking both ways before crossing the street 'cause she'd learned that rule when she was seven years old. The closer she got, the hotter—and younger—the guy looked.

God, this was stupid. Pansy was right. The man was out of her league.

Too hot for her.

Too young for her.

She needed to go back to her store and abandon the whole ruse, but as she began to turn, he lifted his head and caught her gaze.

Oh, dear Lord. Eyes the color of smoke swept over her and something shivery flew right up her spine. It wasn't casual or dismissive. Oddly enough, the gaze felt…profound.

Or maybe she needed to drink less coffee. She must be imagining the connection between them. It had been almost twenty years since she'd tried to pick up a man, so she was out of practice. That was it. She imagined his interest.

He lifted his eyebrows questioningly, and she tried to remember what she was supposed to ask him. A horn honked and she turned her head.

Yeah. She stood in the middle of the street like a moron.

The Aztec sex god turned his head and nodded toward the car. "You gonna move?"

"Yeah," she said, stepping onto the sidewalk. She licked her lips, wishing she'd put on the stupid lip gloss. Not only did she look stupid, but her lips were bare. Eleanor the Daring was appalled by Eleanor the Unprepared, who had shown up in her stead. "Can I help you?"

You can if you toss me over your shoulder, take me to your temple and play sacrifice the not-exactly-a-virgin on your stone pillar of lust.

But she didn't say that, of course.

"I'm looking for a screw," she said.

Dez Batiste lowered his phone and stared at the woman. "I beg your pardon?"

"Huh?"

"You asked for a screw?" he repeated.

She turned the color of the red tiles that framed the doorway behind her. "No. I didn't ask you—uh, I meant a screwdriver."

He almost laughed because he could see where her thoughts had jumped to…which was kind of cute.

He'd parked in front of the club five minutes ago, pissed he couldn't get his damn contractor to show up. He'd dialed Chris Salmon three times, but hung up each time he heard the voice mail. He wasn't in a good mood, didn't need some woman bothering him, but when he'd really looked at this one, he had put his bad mood on pause.

"A screwdriver?"

She nodded and a chunk of hair fell from behind her ear. She pushed it back.

"At first I thought you were propositioning me." He smiled to let her know he wouldn't bite. At least not hard.

Her face turned even redder. "Heavens, no. I just got distracted, uh, by that car." She glanced at the antiques store across the street and rolled her shoulders.

"Why do you need a screwdriver?" he asked, liking what his questions were doing to her. Why? He hadn't the foggiest. There was simply something about her that made him want to peel away layers.

"The stupid lock to the store is messed up, and I'm locked out. No one else is here yet, and I don't have an extra key."

He glanced inside the truck. "Don't have one out here, but I can check to see if anyone left something you can use inside."

She caught her lower lip between her teeth, drawing his attention to the perfect pinkness of her mouth. Soft. As if she'd been painted upon canvas and intentionally smudged. Her fire-streaked hair with a stubborn flip fell to her collarbone, which was visible beneath a shirt the color of ripe watermelon. "I suppose I could ask Mr. Hibbett at Butterfield's. He might have one."

Not wanting to miss an opportunity to make friends in the area, he held out a hand. "I'm Dez Batiste. Let me unlock the door, and we'll see if there's something you can use. Wouldn't want to bother Mr. Hibbett, would we?"

Her gaze lifted to his. "Batiste? As in the guy who wants to open the nightclub?"

His fascination with the woman immediately nose-dived. Five months ago, he'd chosen to roll the dice on an Uptown location for his nightclub rather than a place on Frenchmen Street. Treme might be the hottest jazz scene in New Orleans, but Dez was pretty sure his old neighborhood near the Garden District would welcome the upscale club opening in less than a month. However, there had been opposition to Blue Rondo from some of the merchants. He'd recently received a letter from the Magazine Street Merchants Association questioning the judiciousness of opening a business that could potentially harm the family-friendly atmosphere. It hadn't been "welcoming" at all. More like holding a veiled threat of ill will. "I'm Dez Batiste, the guy who will open a nightclub."

He started to lower his hand, but she took it. "I'm Eleanor Theriot, owner of the Queen's Box." She hiked a thumb over her shoulder toward the large glass-front store directly across the street from where they stood.

"Oh," he said, noting the warmth of her grasp, the sharpness in her gaze and the scent of her perfume, which reminded him of summer nights. He knew who she was, had seen that name before. On the bottom of a complaint to the city council. One of his friends had scored a copy and given him a heads-up.

She dropped her hand. "I assumed you were a worker or something."

"Why, because I'm ethnic?"

Her eyes widened. "No. That's insulting."

He lifted his eyebrows but said nothing.

"You're dressed like you were coming to work or something." She gestured to his old jeans and faded T-shirt, her face no longer as yielding.

Okay, he was dressed in paint-streaked clothes, and the truck had Emilio's Painting plastered to the door, so maybe Eleanor wasn't drawing incorrect conclusions. Because though his grandfather was black, his grandmother Creole and his mother Cuban, Dez didn't look any distinctive race.

"Yeah. Okay."

For a moment they stood, each regarding the other. Dez regretted the shift in mood. He'd wanted to flirt with her, maybe score her digits, but now there was nothing but a bad taste.

"I'd wondered about you, a renowned New Orleans musician returning to open a club in the old Federal Bank," Eleanor said, glancing up at the crumbling brick before returning her gaze to him. Those green eyes looked more guarded than before. "So why here in this part of New Orleans? Aren't there better places for a nightclub?"

"Uptown is where I'm from," Dez said, folding his arms across his chest and eyeing the antiques dealer with her expensive clothes and obvious intolerance for anyone not wearing seersucker and named something like Winston. "What? I don't meet your expectations 'cause I'm not drunk? Or strung out on crack?"

Her eyes searched his, and in them, he saw a shift, as if a decision had been made that instant. "And you don't have horns. I'd thought you'd have horns…unless they're retractable?"

She didn't smile as she delivered the line. It was given smoothly, as if she knew they were headed toward rocky shores and needed to steer clear. So he picked up a paddle and allowed them to drift back into murky waters. "Retractable horns are a closely guarded musician's secret. Who ratted me out?"

Eleanor locked her mouth with an imaginary key.

"Guess a screwdriver wouldn't help?"

She shook her head.

Again, silence.

It was an intensely odd moment with a woman he'd resented without knowing much about her, with a woman who opposed his very dream, with a woman who made him want to trace the curve of her jaw. He'd never been in such a situation.

"Just two things before I go back over there and walk through that very much unlocked door," she said with a resolute crossing of her arms.

"Really? The door's not even locked?" He arched an eyebrow.

"A ploy to come check you out dreamed up by my not-so-savvy salesclerk. Totally tanked on the whole thing from beginning to end. It's pretty embarrassing."

"I'm flattered. Thank your salesclerk for me."

Her direct stare didn't waver. "Oh, come on, don't even pretend you're not the object of a lot of 'Can I borrow your pen?' or 'Do you know what time it is?'"

"Wait, those are pickup lines?" he asked with a deadpan expression. There was something he liked in her straightforwardness along with the soft-glowy thing she had going. Not quite wholesome. More delicate and flowery. This woman wasn't lacquered up with lip gloss and a shirt so low her nipples nearly showed. Instead she begged to be unwrapped like a rare work of art.

He shook himself, remembering she was a high-class broad and not his type.

A summer must read!!!!

Uptown Girl is my favorite book by Liz Talley to date. The book deals with unreasonable expectations, deceit, and struggling family, none of which Ms. Talley shies away from instead embracing the very conflicts that give this novel fire. Her characters will take you by the hand and jerk you along with them into areas of New Orleans, I promise, you have never visited. The main characters have an unlikely romance frought with more than a little uncertainty. But beyond the main characters are colorful jump-off-the-page minor characters like a spiteful daughter, disarmingly funnny, yet tender orphaned brothers, and mischievious in-laws. There is never a dull moment and a few surprises. A must read.

Full of Heart

I don't know where to start. I loved this book from start to finish. From the opening scene that broke my heart to the very end, Liz kept the stakes and the tension high.

This story was beautifully written, the musical motif flowed throughout and I felt the steamy heat of the city and the romance between Dez and Eleanor.

Kudos to the author

I TRULY want to applaud the author on doing something far too many authors shy away from: Adding diversity as a central point to the storyline without beating the reader over the head with the severity of social issues. At the same time, this wasn't simply inserting a BFF or employee of a different ethnicity. Instead, the book portrayed the lives of a diverse cast of characters with obvious differences, yet striking similarities--very much a reflection of the world we live in. Every character had his/her own distinct personality which helped each to stand out on the pages. While I won't rate it a perfect five stars, I found the book quite refreshing.
